Re: BEAUTY NEWS 2.0

Compliments, @Sunnysmom on your Fab taste.

Elsa P. was so influential back then- I'd venture to say that her sculptural forms influenced NY Fashion designers with a 'minimalist' tendency,  ie Donna Karen, CK, Zoran. And H. -all the ultrasuede, and silk column dresses. Well, Japanese designers (Rei, Issey M, Yojhi Y) also had a Big influence on NY, London & Paris fashion-houses. A big topic..!

Over in the Besides Beauty group- '..favorite makeup moments in tv/movies?', there's a post with a still from a recent bio-pic of the late, great Halston.

Re: BEAUTY NEWS 2.0

Yup I’m very familiar with those designers from the good old days too @MvLL ! (Loved those oversized white shirts!🥰)  Donna Karan was and is amazing. Great classic design lives on! Now if I could only apply that rule to cosmetics. 😳🙃 I did enjoy the miniseries on Halston, did you see it too? Over the top but it is what it was!

Ariana Grande’s R.E.M. Beauty Heads to Ulta

In its first brick-and-mortar distribution play, the brand is entering more than 1,000 Ulta Beauty doors next month.

Not surprising, given it's morphe tie

Ariana Grande’s R.E.M. Beauty is going wide with its first retail partner.

The brand, which launched last year, is going into more than 1,000 Ulta Beauty doors next month with its full assortment. At present, it is only sold via the brand’s website, and spans makeup and skin care. Prices range from $16 to $24.

R.E.M. Beauty may be new to Ulta, but Grande is not. The retailer has carried Grande’s perfume lines, which initially launched in 2015.
“We carry a number of celebrity brands that deliver credible influence and innovative products across all categories,” said Monica Arnaudo, chief merchandising officer, Ulta Beauty in an email. “Ariana Grande is a wonderful example of a long-standing, successful celebrity brand partner. Her fragrances are some of our most-loved in the category and we are thrilled to embark on this next chapter of her beauty journey,” she continued.

The brand, incubated by Morphe parent company Forma Brands, is said to resonate both domestically and globally. “From the beginning, Ariana has had such a super clear vision and really knew from the very beginning of the process, as founder and creator, what she wanted the brand to really stand for and to be about,” said Alex Alston, the brand’s vice president.

Part of that value proposition includes accessibility, which Alston sees as guiding its distribution strategy. “Just having that IRL moment is really important, where [consumers] can really touch and feel and explore the product and also, we’re able to provide this playground in a meaningful way across the country,” he said.

“In line with that ambition to be inclusive, it provides us that opportunity to connect with the widest audience possible,” he said.

The celebrity beauty space has seen an onslaught of new entrants, from Scarlett Johansson to Jennifer Lopez. Part of cutting through the clutter, Alston said, involved making sure Grande was involved in every step of building the brand.
“What really differentiates the brand is that we are so authentically linked to her point of view and perspective. That has really allowed us to create something that feels very uniquely Ari,” Alston said. “She will always ensure that we are focused on the core DNA and fundamentals of the brand and I that keeps us true to her vision.”

To that end, Alston added that Grande’s experience with beauty — both as a consumer, and from years in the makeup chair — makes her an ideal sounding board. “She road tests the product, her makeup bag is always full of R.E.M. Beauty samples and she will give me honest feedback all the time about how to make something better,” Alston said.

The brand’s decision to enter retail comes after its second collection drop, called “goodnight n go,” named after the track on her 2018 album, Sweetener.

Grande seemed equally bullish on the partnership. “I decided to work with Ulta Beauty as an exclusive retail partner because they are simply the best and such incredible partners,” she said. “We’ve worked together over the past few years doing fragrance and have built such a wonderful relationship. I feel like R.E.M. Beauty has such a perfect home in Ulta Beauty stores, and I so deeply appreciate their loyalty and their belief in my products. It’s an honor and I am very excited for people to get their hands on them in person.”

Tula Skincare Goes Into Sephora U.S. - April 1st
An assortment of 30 stock keeping units will be available online and in 250 doors.

Spoiler
P&G’s latest acquisition is broadening its reach.

Tula Skincare, which was acquired by the conglomerate earlier this year, is going into Sephora starting April 1. An assortment of 30 stock keeping units will be available on Sephora’s website and in 250 doors.

The brand was reported to be Ulta Beauty‘s fastest-growing prestige brand, and was said to be doing around $150 million in net sales last year, as WWD reported.

“We really are at an inflection point as a brand. I always say that strategy is what you say no to. We have stayed very focused from a channel strategy standpoint,” said Savannah Sachs, chief executive officer, Tula Skincare. “Now, we’ve earned the right to focus on the next step, which is incremental expansion and really raise the bar, which is our theme for this year.”

Tula Skincare first launched in Sephora Canada last year, and Sachs cited exponential interest from Sephora’s customers as the impetus for the partnership. “We knew there was incredible pull from the Sephora customer on demand for Tula, and Sephora saw this whitespace in their assortment for a clean and clinical brand,” she said. “When Sephora came to us, they saw hundreds of thousands of searches for Tula on sephora.com.”

Beyond casting a wider net, Sachs sees another facet to the partnership’s advantages. “Our brand awareness in the U.S. is still quite low, which is exciting. There’s this opportunity ahead of us, and so we see this expansion into Sephora as an incredible brand awareness move, to reach a customer that has a common foundation with our customer today, but also really complementary.

“We’re very aligned in terms of age demographics with the Sephora guest, there’s clearly a focus on Millennials and, increasingly, Gen Z. Sephora has this incredible beauty enthusiast and ‘skin-tellectual’ customer, and a more urban footprint, which will really be complementary to where we are today.”

Re: BEAUTY NEWS 2.0

This is interesting. I also wish it was in more stores. I actually really like the idea, that is super great for rural people like me that don't have the stores others do. We have an hour drive for Target, TJ Maxx, Ross, Ulta and SiJCP. That's all we have in a 4 hour radius. Luxury stores don't exist here. Now the downside. Walmart is really really a thief's paradise. I don't know about any of the other stores but I worked at a Walmart for 5 years. And this is a rural area. Our Walmart, had theft totals in the cosmetics department alone of 60,000+. That 60k was the year they introduced more anti-theft packaging and those things you need an associate to grab off a hook for you. The next year, it didn't take long for people to learn how to beat those, thefts went back up to it's usual number of 90,000+.

Re: BEAUTY NEWS 2.0

What will be the impact of that level of 'shrinkage'? A major increase in price of items? in a Retailer known for Low Prices!  -brings to mind a puppy chasing its own tail.

Re: BEAUTY NEWS 2.0

That’s crazy @Samtian , the small (?!) percentage ruin it for the rest as it always goes. 😕 I had a discussion with an SA in Nordstrom shoes the other day and we noticed that Walmart was also carrying some shoes that they carry with some much higher price points. Wild experiment if so. My friend used to always say that the cleaning supply prices could not be beat however and she would go just for that. I remember that some stores were so clean and neat while others were just a disaster. A shame. I bet they were glad to have you! 😊

Re: BEAUTY NEWS 2.0

@Samtian  That's a shame.

Re: BEAUTY NEWS 2.0

@Nahnom It appears that there are only select Walmart stores that will have this section included so these may be stores with a higher-class demographic in general than what we see in a lot of Walmart stores.

Re: BEAUTY NEWS 2.0

You're right, @Nahnom .  Wal-Mart has a reputation and demographic that are not prestige.  I don't care if they carry a brand that's never been available to me before, but I've been really wanting--it's Wal-Mart and I will not step foot in that store unless I'm desperate!  Makeup--regardless of brand--is not desperation.

The last time I was in Wal-Mart, people kept staring at me.  I was wearing jeans, a t-shirt, and a mask--I was overdressed and no one else was wearing a mask. 😱

Re: BEAUTY NEWS 2.0

@Titian06 I used to not mind Wal-Mart b/c I loved the low prices.  But I haven't been to one in years and years b/c it just got too infuriating to be in there with some of the clientele, and the store just got shoddier and shoddier.  I have a friend that is admittedly cheap, and she says the one by her is so gross that that is where she draws the line!

I just did a quick Google search, and People of Wal-Mart popped up.  I thought it was shut down years ago.

Re: BEAUTY NEWS 2.0

@Titian06 ewwwwwwww 😷😤 I'm in Italy but, if I will ever have a chance to go to the US, I will never enter in a walmart 🤣

Re: BEAUTY NEWS 2.0

Could it be that this is a limited, trial-run? Is wallyworld a permanent place for these top-tier cosm., or diffusion-level range items? Certainly is a curious move. @ohheyitscindyk

Re: BEAUTY NEWS 2.0

@ohheyitscindyk  Joining the surprised chorus: Space NK + Walmart = lolwut

I don't mean to sound negative toward Walmart or Space NK. It's just... this pairing is very odd. Last year, Walmart partnered with Uoma Beauty to sell a brand called Uoma by Sharon C, a sister brand of Uoma. This new brand has a lower price point than Uoma. It was a good fit for Walmart and, really, any drugstore. (I have 2 Uoma by Sharon C lipsticks and they're pretty good!) So I thought "hmm, maybe these prestige brands will create sub-brands with lower prices, or create a sub section of products at lower price points." Then I read this at Vogue Business:

"Products across the skincare, makeup and hair care categories will be available from 15 brands, including By Terry, Lancer, Foreo, Slip and others whose products sell in the $50 to $200 range.

Ummm... ? Is Walmart trying to change/expand their image? If I know I can buy By Terry products at Nordstrom and, via Nordy's rewards program, either earn or use points (Notes), then why would I buy from Walmart? I mean, I guess if I happened to be at a Walmart and wandered into the beauty section... or maybe if I had no local Nordy... but Nordy offers free standard shipping for nearly everything, so... ??

It'll be interesting to see how this partnership pans out.

Re: BEAUTY NEWS 2.0

@WinglessOne I thought I read it incorrectly at first lol. I agree; I would just buy from Nordstrom. I didn't know about the Uoma Beauty partnership!

Re: BEAUTY NEWS 2.0

@ohheyitscindyk  The new Uoma brand launched last summer and I think the only places to get their products (excluding ebay and the like) are still Walmart and Uoma direct: they've split their main site into halves for each brand (the Uoma main brand and the Uoma by Sharon C sister brand). Someone in the beauty influencer sphere did a favorable video review of their products... Wayne Goss, maybe?

I'll have to keep tabs on this Walmart + Space NK deal. Several clothing and shoe brands have created sub-brands meant to sell at discount stores and places like Kohl's, and some beauty brands have also done it. If a local Walmart gets a Space NK section, that might be a reason to go out of my way to visit, just to check out what's available.

Re: BEAUTY NEWS 2.0

@WinglessOne Thanks for letting me know! Please report back if you visit 🙂

Re: BEAUTY NEWS 2.0

@WinglessOne To add onto your point, The Lip Bar created a more affordable sister brand called Thread that is at Target. So I do think there is an increasing number of bigger brands creating drugstore/more affordable sister brands (which I am all for!). Perhaps there will be a curated collection of SpaceNK items that are best suited for Walmart prices?

Re: BEAUTY NEWS 2.0

@Nahnom  I'm not sure how a brand like By Terry can squeeze into Walmart's usual price range unless they create an offshoot/sibling/sub brand or, I dunno, only sell mini sizes of their most popular products at Walmart. Some prestige brands are overpriced anyway, but I can hardly wait to see if and how they alter some of their products for Walmart.

I'm almost tempted to ask By Terry about this. I'm picking on that brand because I've used many of their products. They make my absolute favorite setting powder. A full 10g size is $60 USD, but a mini 1.5g size is $19. The mini sounds teeny tiny, but that powder's so good, you need just the tiniest amount per application—so a mini jar can last a long time. That's the only way I can see By Terry selling that product at Walmart. Eh, they could also tweak the formula and sell it as a lower cost option. It'd be interesting to see how that powder would differ, performance-wise, from the original.

The Lip Bar is also at Target. I think Thread Beauty is specifically geared toward the gen z crowd: lower priced, but also "unconventional" in a Euphoria way. You just reminded me to keep an eye out for Thread at some of my local Targets. 👍
