Re: BEAUTY NEWS 2.0

Not sure if this has been posted before but I just learned of this - the sale is set to close later in the year, Q3.

From unilever site

@WinglessOne @jen81 @Shosh85 @lmaster @sprocketta

I know I'm missing people to tag. I'm sorry. I'll try to tag other folks who I think may be interested after work.

Re: BEAUTY NEWS 2.0

@itsfi  Thanks for the tag!! I hope there's no drastic changes and I especially hope they don't do away with my favorites!

Also, I had no idea they owned so many ice cream companies! I learn so much here on the BIC! 😉

Re: BEAUTY NEWS 2.0

@Shosh85, I know you've been getting into the brand so I thought you might be interested in the news. From the posts below ⬇️, it seems like there's a good chance things may not change too dramatically with PC's offering post-sale, which bodes well to those of us with favorites. 😁 So, it's a wait and see, and while we wait, there's ice cream. 🍦🍨😂

Re: BEAUTY NEWS 2.0

@itsfi  I just seem to have bad luck with my favorites being discontinued 😕 Like with the Sephora lip balms/scrubs - I've tried them all and the ONLY one I liked was the Honey one, and of course it's the ONLY one they stopped selling. ☹️

Re: BEAUTY NEWS 2.0

Thanks for the tag, @itsfi ! I was surprised Unilever’s the buyer because I never associate them with the beauty industry, at least not in the US. I think they own drugstore brands like Simple, Dove, and that one brand I always see at Ulta and Target whose name I often forget… Love Beauty & Planet? And some haircare brands like Tresemme and Suave. Thats all that comes to mind for beauty. I always associate Unilever with ice cream and Vaseline. 😂 But again, I see them only through an American lens. Im sure they have other brands that are popular in the UK and elsewhere.

So at first, Unilever seems an odd buyer choice to me. But I can see why they’d want to add PC to expand their beauty portfolio: PC is kinda like a bridge between drugstore and "higher end" skincare, with good science-based products at mostly reasonable price points. I’m almost glad PC’s not being swallowed by L’Oreal, Estee Lauder, Shiseido, etc.

As long as Unilever doesn’t over-expand the Paula’s Choice product catalog (which has already exploded, thanks in part to the brand’s current owner), jack up prices (another consequence of PC’s first buyer), or push product reformulations for worse, I’m not too concerned. In fact, I'd like to see PC's current catalog streamlined. I still love their approach of products per skin type, but in recent years they've launched several new products that seem mostly trend-driven, like their CBD products. I wish they'd slow their roll and edit their catalog.

Re: BEAUTY NEWS 2.0

@WinglessOne, I love 😍 that you associate Unilever with ice cream; I just learned about that connection when reading up on this acquisition - me thinks this means I should have a bowl of ice cream to celebrate this news. 😉 My first thought was "don't they [Unilever] make bar soap, like Caress and Camay?😂 The brand does have more of a diverse portfolio than I was aware of and my brain is connecting the dots as I read what others here have posted about the skincare brands under Unilever's ownership.

I completely support your wish that PC would "slow their roll"; I love skincare and recognize that there are a lot of innovative skincare products on the market now and that may influence more brands to launch new lines more frequently, but, and I may be in the minority, but there's also something to be said about having a more edited collection. If anything, it will be very interesting to see how PC performs leading up to and following the completion of sale.

Re: BEAUTY NEWS 2.0

@itsfi @WinglessOne I'm curious - what products do you think Unilever might do away with if they edit or streamline Paula's Choice?  I mean, I'm assuming they'll keep their Paula's Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Exfoliating Toner for Clear Skin 4 oz/ 118 mL since it's their top product, but other than that...

Re: BEAUTY NEWS 2.0

@itsfi  Heh, make sure your celebratory ice cream is Ben & Jerry's! Or Breyers would also work. But B&J has far better mix-ins. 👍 Anyway... Once upon a time, Paula's Choice had a much smaller product catalog. I realize brands expand their offerings as they mature and/or grow more popular, but PC's expansion created some product overlap. Several people have told me they don't shop at PC's site because the selection is overwhelming, even after narrowing the field by skin type. If PC's approach was more single-ingredient focused, like The Ordinary's, then a larger catalog would make sense to me. But it's not, so it doesn't. It'll definitely be interesting to see how the brand fares this year. I'm sure there will be (if there's not already) lots of "omg PC sold out and now they're terrible" griping on youtube and instagram and whatnot*.

@greeneyedgirl107  For starters, Unilever and PC should look at where they have product overlap: things are are perhaps too similar to warrant 2 (or more) separate products, especially if they'll work for a wide range of skin types/behaviors. PC has 13 cleansers right now, excluding their scrub, oil cleanser, and Gentle Touch. Several of them are lotion or cream cleansers and I wonder if they're all needed. I'd hate to see Optimal Results Hydrating Cleanser disappear, but if it's very similar to another cream cleanser then I'd give the other one a shot.

PC has 20 moisturizers plus 11 SPF moisturizers. THIRTY-ONE MOISTURIZERS. And I excluded their body moisturizer(s) from my count, though that can also be used on the face. That's... too many. 🤣 I'm not going to compare all their ingredients to see which ones provide the exact same benefits and effects, but I'd be shocked if there wasn't some overlap. Maybe PC and Unilever should start with this category.

*I remember when Ben & Jerry's fans (and anyone interested in social entrepreneurship) flipped out over the company's sale to Unilever. But B&J has survived: the brand still makes dang good ice cream and sticks to its social mission. Sure, Unilever discontinued a flavor or 2 as low sellers. But if B&J can weather a mega buyout without losing its soul, surely Paula's Choice can too.

Re: BEAUTY NEWS 2.0

@WinglessOne @itsfi  .... did someone say ice cream?? 🍦🙄

Re: BEAUTY NEWS 2.0

@missjeanie, I felt inspired to do more research. 😂 It seems that in addition to Ben & Jerry's and Breyers as @WinglessOne shared, Unilever also owns Good Humor, Klondike, Magnum and Popsicle. That's a good variety to choose from. 😋

Re: BEAUTY NEWS 2.0

Wow! @itsfi I appreciate good research!!  Bahahaha might just need to conduct a trial study or two myself!

Re: BEAUTY NEWS 2.0

Absolutely @missjeanie! 😃 Science requires you conduct extensive trial studies on this; testing everything over and over again. 😉 You can never be too sure. 😂

Re: BEAUTY NEWS 2.0

@WinglessOne What good insight you have!!!!  I feel less nervous.  Thanks for sharing!  ❤️ ❤️ ❤️

Re: BEAUTY NEWS 2.0

@WinglessOne I've been frantically reading articles.  Here's one from Yahoo! via WWD (I think):

Unilever has signed a deal to acquire skin care brand Paula’s Choice for around $2 billion, according to industry sources.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, and Unilever declined to comment on the price tag. WWD had previously reported in April that the brand was exploring M&A options, and that the business is expected to do more than $300 million in net sales for 2021.

Paula’s Choice was founded in 1995 by Paula Begoun, who authored “Don’t Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me” and “The Complete Beauty Bible.” Begoun was an early advocate for ingredient transparency in beauty, and Paula’s Choice was one of the first skin care brands to create an ingredient dictionary.

Paula’s Choice is well known for products like 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant and Niacinamide 20% Treatment.

The brand is primarily sold direct-to-consumer online, but also sells with Nordstrom and recently launched with Sephora

In a February interview, Paula’s Choice chief marketing officer Erika Kussmann said the brand was the largest d-to-c skin care brand in the world, and that the line had garnered Gen Z attention on TikTok and Reddit.

“The really great thing about d-to-c, working digital, is you have a very clear sense of the potential market and you can identify really high-potential audiences of people who haven’t been introduced to the brand yet,” Kussman said. “That gives you this idea of runway, and we know that there’s so much more ahead there.” At that time, just over 50 percent of Paula’s Choice’s sales came from international markets.

Paula’s Choice will become part of Unilever Prestige, run by Vasiliki Petrou, who called the brand “a true pioneer in the digital space” and “a mission-based brand rooted in truth and transparency.”

Unilever plans to bring Paula’s Choice to a larger audience of customers, Petrou said.

“Developing Unilever’s portfolio in the high-growth premium skin care segment is one of our strategic priorities and I’m excited that Paula’s Choice is joining us on this journey,” said Unilever Beauty & Personal Care president Sunny Jain in a statement.

Paula’s Choice is being sold by TA Associates, which invested in the business alongside Bertram Capital in 2016. At that time, the brand’s revenues were said to be around $70 million and the business was valued at $275 million.

The Unilever deal is expected to close in the third quarter. Industry sources said the brand hired three banks — Financo Raymond James as lead adviser, Piper Sandler and Morgan Stanley — for the deal.

For Unilever, Paula’s Choice adds another strong direct-to-consumer business to its prestige skin care lineup. Unilever also owns Tatcha, which it bought for nearly $500 million in 2019, as well as Murad, Dermalogica, Kate Sommerville and Ren.

The acquisition comes as Unilever re-thinks its beauty holdings. Executives have said publicly that the company is considering options for some of the smaller beauty and personal care brands sold in Europe and North America.

The coronavirus pandemic has caused many of beauty’s largest players to evaluate their brand portfolios, with many said to be considering divestitures.

Re: BEAUTY NEWS 2.0

@greeneyedgirl107  Yeah, I commented further down this thread about forgetting this is Unilever's "Prestige Group" division (because I keep forgetting they have such a division), and also forgetting about their Hourglass purchase. Unilever never enters my mind when I think about the megas that own all the beauty brands; my brain still hasn't registered that association. 😂 I'm still glad none of the other megas got their mitts on PC.

This changes my original "bridge between drugstore and higher end" perspective, but I'm still not very concerned. Considering, for instance, the product catalog activities at Tatcha before and after that brand's sale to Unilever, I'm not currently worried that PC will lose or reformulate (for worse) their most beloved products. I mean, I'm not a Tatcha skincare user so it's not like I frequently check their INCI lists or product offerings, but still: I haven't seen the same type of product explosion there as I've seen at PC under their current owner, and I don't expect to see it after PC's sale. 🤷‍♀️ So for now, I'm in wait-and-see mode.

Re: BEAUTY NEWS 2.0

@WinglessOne You've made a lot of very good points!  You've calmed me down, and I need to repeat what you've said to myself 🙂

Re: BEAUTY NEWS 2.0

@itsfi I am SO disappointed to learn of this.  PC is my fave brand, and I can't live without their BHA 9.  I just hope they don't change that product.  My oh my 😞

Re: BEAUTY NEWS 2.0

@greeneyedgirl107, BHA 9 is my favorite PC product as well! 💖 After I read the article, I did think about whether I needed to start stockpiling BHA 9. 😂🤣😂 I'll wait and see, but that still remains an option. lol.

Re: BEAUTY NEWS 2.0

@itsfi I think I'm going to order three of the BHA 9 since they're having their anniversary sale.  Ironically, I just used the last little bit of my open tube (but of course have a back-up).  How long do you think the product actually stays good for?  (I always keep my products for way longer than what's printed, unless it's a Vitamin C I think has oxidized or something.)

Re: BEAUTY NEWS 2.0

@greeneyedgirl107, looks like @itsfi is correct 👇

B4892573-578F-4D5B-AF1C-489DD6B9D720.jpeg

Re: BEAUTY NEWS 2.0

@greeneyedgirl107, I think in general the products have a shelf life of 2 - 3 years unopened and maybe 12 months once opened. I’ll try to look into getting more info.
