@WinglessOne & @haleyvvvv , I think my concern is two fold
The formula for PAT McGRATH LABS Skin Fetish: Sublime Perfection Weightless Foundation is probably going to change, but that's probably due to the EU regulation for cyclopentabibonilone 😅 aka cyclopentasiloxane, but what the Internets have shown me was that people complained the formulas weren't worth the price tag which kind of feeds into number two... But that's a whole separate issue. The only thing I kind of agree was the lack of education, there used to be tricks and tips and then that just disappeared. If the company stays afloat, they will likely ravage reformulate and discontinue a lot of the stuff that works because it'll likely be cheaper to produce and they can claim it is more user friendly 😞
@danielledanielle I’m always worried about formula changes, regardless of a brand’s financial status. (“That’s my secret, Captain. I’m always [worried].” 😅) But I can see why bankruptcy would spark that consumer fear. I mean, Pat’s brand had already moved away from her “special” Mothership formulas before looking for a buyer, and yeah, plenty of her longtime customers weren’t (still aren’t) happy about that—mostly because Mothership prices haven’t lowered. (As if any of us non-formulators know the actual formulation costs of these eyeshadows.) The brand could instead lower palette costs by changing the Mothership packaging, but then a lot of those same customers would complain that like omg the palettes don’t feel ~luxurious~ anymore 🙄 and they’d demand that expensive casing. I’ll resist the urge to rant (again) about people caring more about the look/“feel” of a container than the product inside it.
If I had to cut some Pat McGrath Labs costs, I’d probably start with the skincare products. I’d remove those from the product catalog. I’m generally not a fan of makeup brands dipping into skincare; it always feels like a misstep to me, like branching out into something the brand has no experience or customer association with. But again, I don’t know what Pat’s skincare products cost to create and package. I’d still probably cut ‘em though. Then I’d look at the makeup side of house.
I wonder if the brand’s done much customer insight research. For instance, I suspect things like the SatinAllure lipsticks might not be selling as well as expected because of the shade range, not necessarily the formula—though I much prefer the discontinued LuxeTrance formula. That’s getting back into longterm customers wanting more artistic options from Pat, not the same neutral safe color stories found at 1000 other brands. Pat’s been playing it too safe, meanwhile here comes MAC like someone lit a “get the bleep back to your artistic brand roots” fire under ‘em. 🤣 (Whoever’s responsible for that deserves some praise.)
I definitely agree with the disappearing how-to tips. I remember Pat’s guide for Midnight Sun as maybe the most detailed one she’d ever put on a Mothership product page. All palette usage tips might’ve disappeared around the same time Motherships stopped including the special formulas we all knew and loved, since those were usually the ones that confused/frustrated Mothership newbies. It’d be great to have palette-specific educational info back on product pages, even if we never get those formulas back.
That totally makes sense, @danielledanielle . To some degree I understand why consumers/influencers wanted more from the brand in terms of the products from the brand matching the vision of her artistry. But when I look at brands at the same price point (I dunno ND and Byredo maybe?), they release a lot of similar palettes over and over, so it makes sense to see this as part of a larger issue with a lack of support for Black owned/created brands.

@itsfi Ulta has so many K-beauty brands in their Marketplace already, I'm not surprised Sephora is following suit. I'm interested to see which ones they'll carry.

@danielledanielle years ago I would have been excited but now I just feel like it's more Ulta nonsense: another brand that they'll have online but not in store. Plus, I've found his prices to be too high.
Interesting, @danielledanielle! The odd thing about Sephora and some luxury lines, like Tom Ford, Dior, and La Mer, is how Sephora only carries part of the line. It will be interesting to see if Ulta carries the entire Tom Ford line.
@curlychiquita It's interesting. I'm always intrigued about this stuff, but I do worry that greater demand leads to reduced quality. I think I read somewhere that a few of the fragrances that were on sale were covered to a different line, so maybe the fragrance will expand, too.

Pat McGrath Labs seeks buyer as assets are put up for auction

The luxury cosmetics brand, founded by Dame Pat McGrath, is up for auction, with the opportunity to acquire the brand's assets, included collateral pledged by Pat McGrath Cosmetics, LCC and Patricia McGrath
Cosmetics brand Pat McGrath Labs, founded by Dame Pat McGrath, is looking for a buyer.
The company’s assets, including collateral pledged by Pat McGrath Cosmetics, LLC and Patricia McGrath (aka Dame Pat McGrath), will be available to acquire at public auction, facilitated by financial services company Hilco Global.
Bids are to be submitted to Hilco Global by the deadline of 7am PST/10am EST/2pm GMT on 26 January.
An auction is set to be conducted via Zoom at 7am PST/10am EST/2pm GMT on 27 January, with the option to also attend in-person.
The news comes following rumours in December 2025 that Pat McGrath Labs assets would be put up for sale.
Detailing the terms of the sale, the auction brochure states: “An asset sale will be conducted pursuant to Article 9 of the Uniform Commercial Code on behalf of the secured lender (the “Secured Party”).
“The assets will be offered and sold by the Secured Party on an ‘“as-is’” ‘“where-is’” basis without representations or warranties of any kind.
“Potential bidders are encouraged to conduct their own diligence with respect to any and all information provided herein regarding the assets.”
Pat McGrath Labs launched in 2015, debuting with Gold 001 – a metallic foil that sold out within six minutes, setting the precedent for the brand.
It soon became known for its high-performance formulas, pigmented eyeshadows and lip products, garnering celebrity fans such as singer Taylor Swift.
In 2018, the brand received a US$60m minority investment from Eurazeo Brands.
In August 2025, brand founder McGrath teamed up with luxury fashion house Louis Vuitton to launch its make-up line La Beauté.
McGrath is named as Creative Director, Cosmetics, for the luxury French housebrand.
Speaking on the sale, Hilco Global's CCO, SVP IP Team, Richelle Kalnit, said: "Continuing to build the brand will require a mix of maximising the core and continuing to lead and set trends with product innovation and intuition.
"Strong fundamentals not only provide a stable foundation of recurring revenue and targeted innovation but also a solid base for future expansion."
@danielledanielle very interesting! I've always been adoring of PMG but because it's not sold at any of my stores, I own very little. Do you think this would change with new ownership?
@greeneyedgirl107 , it would've, but now with the chapter 11, I'm not sure. Articles say it'll keep operating, but I'm not very optimistic. I'm fighting every urge to stock up every more on certain items and some things have been sold out for awhile

@miss8 Hmm… hemp (CBD) is already federally legal for cosmetics, as long as it’s no stronger than 0.3% THC. I’m not sure that’ll change if marijuana is moved from schedule I to schedule III, especially since the move wouldn’t legalize marijuana across the US. This proposed schedule change is more for medical purposes than cosmetic.
