Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge 2024

Hello, BIC Beauties! If the idea of makeup capsules piques your curiosity, or you're interested in seeing what's in the beauty collection or weekly makeup bag of your fellow BIC beauties, jump right on in - with questions, comments or a capsule of your own to share.

To add a fun take on putting together a makeup capsule, I've included theme(s) for the weekly capsule - some weeks, I have enough products in my stash (eek!) to make a whole capsule based on the prompt; other weeks, I have just one or two items that fit neatly within theme.

What is a capsule makeup collection?  

A capsule makeup collection is a selection of makeup products that can be used to put together different looks for a variety of occasions. For some of us, that may mean a group of essential products for your everyday look plus a few extra items for a more glam or dramatic look; and, for others of us, that may mean, a lineup of our holy grail product(s) in each makeup category. My ideal capsule makeup collection probably falls somewhere in between - we'll (hopefully) find out at the end of the year! I don't see myself as a minimalist, but I don't have an extensive collection of makeup either. I appreciate the collections of people who fall within both camps but I float somewhere in between - on the one hand, my brow product collection would earn a gold star if we were using a minimalist approach to makeup; my lip product lineup, on the other hand, would not. 🤣 It would most definitely not.  

Why have a capsule makeup collection?  

Everyone will have their own reasons for having (or not having) a more streamlined makeup collection. Over the years, I've just become more interested in having less beauty products on hand (well, except for lip products, lol) - a handful of items I use or reach for more frequently with maybe a few additional products that are go-to's for me for special events or occasions.  Don't get me wrong, I love trying new products and I don't see that changing. I just like the idea of having a simpler collection (I appreciate that "simpler" can be relative), curated to my needs and lifestyle.

Why weekly? 
A few years ago, beauty & lifestyle blogger Serein Wu, did a weekly series (on her blog and YouTube channel), Makeup Bag Monday, where she rotated her makeup bag each week with new product launches and makeup already in her collection. Every Monday, she shared the products she selected for the upcoming week and provided detailed makeup reviews on the makeup she used for the previous week. I may not post detailed reviews, but will at least try to include a weekly recap (probably at the end of the week) of what products I like and which ones didn't work for me.  If weekly works for you, great. If not, feel free to join in based on what works best for you.

What if I don't have enough products to fit the theme for a full face?

No need for your entire makeup capsule to fit the weekly theme(s). Just one will do. And, even if you don't have one that fits squarely within a theme, feel free to post your makeup capsule. We'd love to see what you're using and hear your feedback on the products as you put them to use.

@itsfi  I was at the edge of my seat waiting for the main event and it kept me hanging till the end. In true main event fashion! I am so surprised that U Beauty won the battle. But not the 🐐 I mean it is hard to beat Tower 28 Beauty SunnyDays SPF 30 Tinted Sunscreen Foundation 30 PCH  it’s a true 🐐. 

one thing I was surprised by was that Nudestix didn’t preform well. I feel like they might have been one of the first brands that started the multi stick. So I am disappointed it didn’t preform well. 

And yay for the sparkles winning. I think a clear with sparkles is always the best option. It just adds that extra bit!! Yay for this showdown of makeup!! It was even better than the March Madness makeup!!

@ather, I won't say it will never happen, but it would take a lot, and I mean, A LOT!!! for Tower 28 Beauty SunnyDays SPF 30 Tinted Sunscreen Foundation to lose its 🐐 GOAT status. The K18 dry shampoo did it to the amika Perk Up dry shampoo and that actually had me stunned, so I won't say never, but it's unlikely SunnyDays will be bested as my go to skin tint. ❤️

A few notes about the skin tint battle, which I probaby should have included in the original post:

• Danessa Myricks Beauty Yummy Skin Soothing Serum Skin Tint Foundation with Peptides + Ceramides  is lovely, but T28 SunnyDays gives me more coverage and glow. I feel like of the three skin tints duking it out this week, the DM is most similar consistency-wise to the T28 but since I have the T28, I could do without the DM. I've worked my way through a good bit of it and I do like it, so I won't declutter it and instead, will plan to use it up. Where does the Live Tinted skin tint fit? If I were to rank it, it would fall between the Tower 28 and the Danessa Myricks.

• Kosas BB Burst Tinted Moisturizer Gel Cream with Copper Peptides separates on certain parts of my face throughout the day - it's odd. I get separation on the high points of my cheek bone, on my left cheek; as well around certain parts of my mouth and jawline. That actually made it an easy decision to pass on this one. I really wanted to like it.

• U Beauty The Super Tinted Hydrator was the darkhorse. I thought it would be too sheer and too glowy (possibly greasy looking) for my liking, but I think my skin type at the moment is right in the sweet spot for this product. It is more sheer than the T28 SunnyDays but also more dewy (but without being greasy). It's different enough from T28 SunnyDays (and the lighter coverage and no SPF may come in handy) that I feel like it has a place in my collection without feeling too similar to the T28.

@itsfi  Ooooo now I’m more interested in the Live Tinted!! Interesting the Kosas separated. Especially where it did. I’m glad it was easy to pass. It was on my list to try but I’ll strike it out now!! Better to stick to what works!! The DM sounds good too.

@ather, the undertone in the DM leans more yellow whereas the undertone in the Live Tinted, at least the color I chose, is more neutral which suits me better. 

Yeah, Kosas is really hit or miss for me. I like their tinted oil (that looks like it’s no longer available), their lip oils and their bronzers (but I’ve only tried the original formula, not the new version).

Week 22 - The May 2024 "On The Chopping Block" Makeup Capsule

Mixing it up a bit with my capsule for the last week of May. It's a spin on the "On The Chopping Block" theme; however, not all of these items are at risk of being chopped! Some of these beauties, in fact, are Top Shelf or worthy of a place on the Top Shelf.  Many, though, sit in that undecided camp where it's a liked (or in some instances, a "very well liked") product but not necessarily a loved one or one that standouts amongst other similar products in my stash. 

I've chosen 3-5 products for each of the following categories - complexion, eyes, cheeks and lips. My goal is to declutter at least one product from each group. A Battle Capsule, so to speak 😉 or a duel between products. Something I think I mean have mentioned earlier in the year, and that was brought back to my after chatting with a good friend over the board game "Battleship" 🚢

In addition to trying to declutter a few items from this bunch, I'm also hoping to put together a separate mini capsule from this set of beauties, and put that mini capsule to use over the weekend - it'll be a sub-capsule, so to speak, from the larger ensemble and was something that came to mind as I was chatting with our magnificent @caitbird earlier this month.

Thank you @ather! I've had a duel with foundations or lip products in mind for a few months but never really got anywhere with it, and that just morphed into a battle across different categories. All inspired by talking about a game of Battleship! 😊 Surprisingly, it was pretty easy to assemble a few beauties to battle it out with one another. lol. I'm pretty sure that may mean that I have too many products. 🙄 In any event, this is shaping up to be a fun week. I love the color commentary "battle of the tints. Who will win and reign over them all and which one will be left in the dust." It evokes dazzling broadcast journalism feels a la the Olympics or high stakes sporting events. Love it! 💗

lol, soon enough @CynthieLu @ather; results from this battle will be decided soon enough. My battle wear test ends tomorrow. I will say though that I'm not sure whether any of the skin tints I have will top Tower 28 Beauty SunnyDays SPF 30 Tinted Sunscreen Foundation. I just shared my current top 5 favorite foundations with another BIC'er and there are a couple of them, including the Tower 28 in the skin tint category, that I think will be tough (if not impossible) to beat as a favorite. Which makes me wonder how many skin tints makes sense for me to have in my ultimate capsule? For the skin tint category, I'm definitely open to more than 1. 😂🤣😂

@itsfi  what a fun idea - an elimination round capsule! 😂 I haven't finalized this week's capsule yet, but I do have a list of products to possibly declutter as well as my favorites of the month, so I will probably do some combination of the two. I will be interested to see which of your products comes out on top, and which ones end up getting chopped!

It's hard to let go of products I have, whether because I don't want to feel like I'm wasting something or because I just don't want to let go. I've been using these capsules to come up with creative ways to work through my stash that help my left brain and right brain be on board with moving something out of my stash! All while discovering (or rediscovering) the things I do have that I really love!
