Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Hello, BIC Beauties! If the idea of makeup capsules piques your curiosity, or you're interested in seeing what's in the beauty collection or weekly makeup bag of your fellow BIC beauties, jump right on in - with questions, comments or a capsule of your own to share.
0 - 8.18 edit capsule post 1.jpg

0 - 8.18 edit capsule post 2.jpg

0 - 8.18 edit capsule post 4.jpg
To add a fun take on putting together a makeup capsule, I've included theme(s) for the weekly capsule - some weeks, I have enough products in my stash (eek!) to make a whole capsule based on the prompt; other weeks, I have just one or two items that fit neatly within theme.

Whether you find yourself in the same place or somewhere in between, jump right on it and share your weekly makeup capsule. Check out the FAQ section below ⤵️ for more info on this challenge.

CURRENT MAKEUP CAPSULE THEME:

Week 42 (October 14 - 20) - The "Makeup I'm Thankful For" Makeup Capsule and/or The Do Over / Take 2 Makeup Capsule - To celebrate Canadian Thanksgiving (October 14) with our Canadian BIC beauties 🇨🇦, let's curate a capsule this week of products you are thankful for, be it:
  • because it was gifted to you by a friend, family or brand
  • because it's a HG or a tried-and-true product you can't be without
  • because it holds sentimental or nostalgic value to you
  • or, just because
OR, use the week to repeat or "do over" a past makeup capsule or capsule theme. Consider posting your "Do over" / "Take 2" 🎬 look on the Makeup Challenge of the Week 2021/2022/2023/2024 thread. 😍

Upcoming Makeup Capsule Themes: [Updated 10.14.2024] Take a sneak peek at the weekly themes to come.

Spoiler
Week 43 (October 21 - 27) - The "How Low Can I Go?" Makeup Capsule and/or The Global Makeup Capsule - Two new themes this week - curate a capsule inspired by one or the other, or both.

You may be asking, for the "How Low Can I Go?" prompt,  What do you mean by "low", itsfi? Like the green capsule we did back in Week 17 (April, 2024), you tell me what "low" means to you this week. Low can mean:
  • minimalist - as in the number of makeup products you will use this week
  • budget friendly - are the makeup beauties in this week's capsule awesome and affordable?
  • low-key - like this fall's demure makeup trend
  • other: your definition of "low" for this capsule prompt

October 24 is United Nations Day, a day that is intended to be "devoted to raising awareness of the goals and achievements of the [United Nations] and gaining support for its work." I imagine so many things can be said here; I am intending that this prompt be an opportunity for folks who so desire to do so, to create a makeup capsule consisting of products or brands from around the world. This can be one or more product. It can be based on a brand with a founder born, raised or based in a country that is different from yours. It can be as simple (a US-based BIC'er including a product from a Canadian brand - e.g., MAC, Cheekbone, Nudestix; or a Canadian-based BIC'er using a product from a US brand) or as diverse as you want to make it (having a product from a brand based in each continent, though probably not Antarctica; a Japanese beauty or Korean beauty based makeup capsule, etc.).

What is a capsule makeup collection?

A capsule makeup collection is a selection of makeup products that can be used to put together different looks for a variety of occasions. For some of us, that may mean a group of essential products for your everyday look plus a few extra items for a more glam or dramatic look; and, for others of us, that may mean, a lineup of our holy grail product(s) in each makeup category. My ideal capsule makeup collection probably falls somewhere in between - we'll (hopefully) find out at the end of the year! I don't see myself as a minimalist, but I don't have an extensive collection of makeup either. I appreciate the collections of people who fall within both camps but I float somewhere in between - on the one hand, my brow product collection would earn a gold star if we were using a minimalist approach to makeup; my lip product lineup, on the other hand, would not. 🤣 It would most definitely not.

Why have a capsule makeup collection?

Everyone will have their own reasons for having (or not having) a more streamlined makeup collection. Over the years, I've just become more interested in having less beauty products on hand (well, except for lip products, lol) - a handful of items I use or reach for more frequently with maybe a few additional products that are go-to's for me for special events or occasions.  Don't get me wrong, I love trying new products and I don't see that changing. I just like the idea of having a simpler collection (I appreciate that "simpler" can be relative), curated to my needs and lifestyle.

Why weekly?
A few years ago, beauty & lifestyle blogger Serein Wu, did a weekly series (on her blog and YouTube channel), Makeup Bag Monday, where she rotated her makeup bag each week with new product launches and makeup already in her collection. Every Monday, she shared the products she selected for the upcoming week and provided detailed makeup reviews on the makeup she used for the previous week. I may not post detailed reviews, but will at least try to include a weekly recap (probably at the end of the week) of what products I like and which ones didn't work for me.  If weekly works for you, great. If not, feel free to join in based on what works best for you.

What if I don't have enough products to fit the theme for a full face?

No need for your entire makeup capsule to fit the weekly theme(s). Just one will do. And, even if you don't have one that fits squarely within a theme, feel free to post your makeup capsule. We'd love to see what you're using and hear your feedback on the products as you put them to use.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi Ahh I understand about the GOAT 🐐 category vs Favorites. There is so much out there too!

I was inspired after our conversation about GWPs so I created I DID IT FOR THE GWP! 🛍 ! Lol I am sure many of us can relate to this! I think I should go back to my purchase history to find a few examples.

I am glad you are enjoying the Rare liquid highlighter. Yes there is so much in the bottle! I have two and I wonder if I will be able to finish them. I have a gold shade and a more bronzy shade. These are the only ones I have tried so I can't really compare it to other yet. I was more of a powder highlighter gal. But I am open to learning and trying new things. Tbh, I have the Saie Glowy Super Gel Lightweight Dewy Multipurpose Illuminator and I have not given it enough love. Would you say this counts as a liquid highlighter?

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@Mellmars1185, I would say the Saie Illuminator most certainly counts as a liquid highlighter. In the early days of this challenge, it was my go to liquid highlighter. I still like it a lot, but I've been digging more into my stash (and also picking up some of the new releases - oop! 😲). I need to add it to the list to use for a future Sleeping Beauties capsule. These days, I probably put the Saie Illuminator into the gel highlighter category, but that's only so that it won't look like I have so many liquid highlighters. 😂

"I was more of a powder highlighter gal. But I am open to learning and trying new things." SAME, mellmars, same. I've gotten more into cheek products this year with this challenge and with some enabling encouragement along the way from other BIC beauties and threads like Cheek Challenge Summer 2024: Choose Your Own Adventure and seeing the lovely looks folks here, like yourself, create and post to Makeup Challenge of the Week 2021/2022/2023/2024 and What are you wearing today Pt2

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi I am curious to know what new releases of liquid highlighter(s) you picked up! Maybe 2024 is a big year for cheek product new releases? I have picked up many this year too. Off topic but the new Hourglass Liquid Blushes have caught my eye.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@Mellmars1185, oooouh, the new Hourglass blushes! I smile every time I see the new Hourglass blushes on display - they're all so cute lined up together. They look like they would make the perfect set - hmmm ... maybe a set of mini's for the holidays??? 😍

Oh yes, I feel like cheeks and tinted lip balms have been having some major moments this year. I'm very behind on getting to the products I picked up earlier in the year; hoping to find some more time soon. The good news is that I have been good, okay, fairly good, about not picking up too many more things in the meantime. 😅 I picked up a few more liquid highlighters this year, or, they're probably more new-to-me than new as in trending new - a couple of the Dior ones, a Rare Beauty mini (even that has a lot of product in it), Pai, Vieve.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi Oh yes they would make a nice holiday set. Plus if they do I am sure many of us would love to try it. So it is like a win win situation lol.

I think I am in the same category as you in shopping....maybe fair I would say. I tried but it is so hard for me to resist certain sales or new releases. One might think from the outside that I am doing well for my no/low buy. But the truth is I am just not posting them on the haul threads 🫠

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Hahahaha @Mellmars1185! I am LOVING the “but the truth is I am just not posting them on the hauls thread.” 😂🤣😂 If I didn’t have a pile of unopened boxes in one corner of the living room, I’d think my subconscious was doing the same thing. I’m so behind on unboxing. But, to be fair, I’m also not buying as often or as much as I did before. Not that I don’t get distracted by all the pretty releases, but I’m less inclined to buy the next releases as soon as it comes out just to have it. Is there a product category or brand that you find harder to resist?

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi Hehe I am behind on unboxing too. Maybe that is another reason to slow down on the spending. I watch a YouTuber that enables me to make lots of purchases. Lip oils/lipsticks, lipliner, new Foundations/concealers are hard for me to resist. I don't lean towards a particular brand. I like buying things that others recommend. I like everything lol

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Oh, it sounds like the YT’er is doing his/her job very well then @Mellmars1185. I’m hoping to get all my unboxings done in the next couple of weeks but that’s a pretty aggressive schedule. We shall see. Much of it is not beauty related; not sure if it’ll make the process go more quickly though.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi Ohh happy unboxing! It sounds like you have quite a bit to open! I hope you are happy with everything you get 🎁

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@Mellmars1185, thank you. I had some things I ordered for the house and they arrived in different shipments over a period of months. 📦 Clearly I did not time things very well. 😆 I also have a package in the pile that I think will be very fitting for the I DID IT FOR THE GWP! 🛍 😉

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi Oooo a whole package?!?! Now I am curious about what it is! 🤔

Week 32 in ReviewSleeping Beauties

32 - Recap Take 2 Sleeping Beauties.jpg

I had a few capsules I was working with last week, with the Sleeping Beauties theme (Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge) being the one with products I was focused on trying out/testing out.

Spoiler

Going back to my original set up (for the most part) for recapping last week's Sleeping Beauties capsules.

🏆  Top Shelf

  • No new product to be added to my Top Shelf.

😲  Surprise Discovery (or Re-Discovery): (a new category for my week-in-review posts)

  • NARS Powermatte Long-Lasting Lipstick Thunder Kiss - 115 - It's been almost 2 years since I purchased this beauty, and, if I'm remembering right, this lippie was also part of the SEPHORiA 2023 NYC swag bag. Why I haven't reached for this more, I'm not sure, though I suspect that I can place the blame for my extra robust collection of lip products. 😅 As to who I blame for that collection being so extra, ummmm .... 🤔🤣 I'll try to post a swatch later this week.

🤔  Undecided

  • I like the e.l.f. Poreless Putty Primer but given the other primers I have in my stash, including ones I love, I’m not sure if it’s one I will keep. I have an idea for a primer showdown so maybe I’ll keep this one on hand until then.
  • Glossier Skywash Liquid-to-Powder Sheer Matte Eyeshadow Tint EchoGlossier Skywash Liquid-to-Powder Sheer Matte Eyeshadow Tint Echo - this offers a nice wash of color (buildable, if needed), but can require a little more effort than I sometimes like to put into my eye makeup in the mornings. I think it could make for a lovely eyeshadow primer, which is how I plan to use it next, with a couple of the ND Biba shadows I’m trying to work through for the pan it! challenge.

👋  Declutters

  • I like the convenience of stick products like NUDESTIX Nudies Glow Cream Highlighter Stick Hey, Honey - I think I have kept this too long as it feels like it's dried or drying out? This will be tossed 🗑 when trash day rolls around. A reminder to myself to use my products. Lesson learned (though I feel like this is a repeat lesson for me 😆).

FYI - September capsule themes to be posted by end of the week.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

When i was looking for some capsule products last Sunday, i had the realization that I possibly had too many sleeping beauties in my collection……. I got a little distracted and ended up just trying to use some of my lost collection every day. While i was on my journey, i threw this lip combo on and, dare i say, this is my favourite accidental lip combo ever????? I wore it multiple times this week so far, and i have moved it to my “no brainer” tray with some products i can pick up and throw on whenever I’m in a rush. I keep things like the mascaras I’m currently using, a neutral blush that matches everything, a clear lip balm, a couple easy lip combos, an eyebrow gel and a concealer there.

This look is courtesy of some of the sleeping beauties in my collection! I’ve put a  next to the sleeping beauties.

Spoiler
Anastasia Beverly Hills Mini Clear Brow Gel Flexible Medium-Hold Eyebrow Setter Clear
Revlon PhotoReady Candid Concealer(this is also part of my pan project but I have other concealers in my rotation, and honestly forgot that i even had one in my project)
Essence Lash Princess Mascara (Purple Tube)
MAC Shiny Pretty Things Holiday Palette (i used the highlight and the blush from this palette. It’s also in my pan project to try to use more this year, but like the concealer, I totally forgot that i had it in my project, and that it even was in my collection at all….)

the winning lip combo was….. Rimmel Everlasting Lip Liner in Cappucino, NYX Dazed and Diffused Lip Crayon in Girls Trip and Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez Stay Vulnerable Glossy Lip Balm Nearly Neutral on top. I think i picked the RB up as part of SF kit, so it always slips my mind, but not anymore!!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@cianni  beautiful look! I agree, this lip combo is definitely a winner! I love the idea of having a "no brainer" quick capsule for days when you don't have time/don't feel like deliberating over a whole look & products - I may have to steal that idea!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Beautiful @cianni! That’s awesome that you discovered a new favorite lip combination - I love that! ♥️ The combo looks fantastic on you.

A huuuge yes to having a “quick and easy, tried and true” “no brainer” set of makeup products for you when you’re in a rush. 👍🏼 That’s a capsule for you right there!!!

btw, your hair looks fabulous!! Always but even more so in this photo. #hairgoals

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Week 32 - The Take 2 / Do Over Makeup Capsule
For this week's "Take 2" theme, I'm going back to the makeup I used while on vacation last month, both very minimalist makeup looks.

Monday & Wednesday - while on vacation, this combination of products worked very nicely for a dewy-but-not-too-dewy glow. I may need to add Bobbi Brown Mini Vitamin Enriched Face Base Moisturizer & Primer with Vitamin C + Hyaluronic Acid 0.... since the weather in the city is much cooler and my skin has been on the drier side since being back
32 - Take 2 - Travel 1.jpg
Spoiler
😎  LIGHTSAVER Tinted - Activated Mineral Face Sunscreen Broad Spectrum - SPF 33 1.69 oz / 50 ml
🐐  Tower 28 Beauty SunnyDays SPF 30 Tinted Sunscreen Foundation 20 Mulholland - this is my peak of summer shade - summer hasn't peaked here but I have a little more color from vacation
🍉  Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Niacinamide Hue Drops Sun Glow Serum 1.35 oz / 40 mL - to help match the "tan" that only I can apparently see that I have. 😅
🍓  Prep my lips with Hello Sunday The One For Your Lips SPF 50 Hydrating Lip Balm with Hyaluronic Acid & Squalane 0.5 fl ...  - it's a thinner consistency than many of the balms I have and love, but htis is great for some light hydration and sun protection. And, it smells subtly of strawberries
💋  Once the lip balm has absorbed, I go in with the Clarins Lip Perfector Sheer Lip Gloss Rosewood Shimmer
👁  Gotta curl my lashes - it's a quick, easy, simple way to open up my eyes
Tuesday & Saturday
32 - Take 2 - Travel 2.jpg
Spoiler
🐐  Prep skin with DIOR Capture Dreamskin 1-Minute Mask 2.5 oz / 75 mL - one of these days I'll apply this all over; the other day, I'll just apply it along my jaline and mouth where I have some texture issues going on. 😴
🌺  Fenty Skin Hydra Vizor Mineral SPF 30 Refillable Moisturizer - this has a peachy pink hue to it that does a nice job of adding a little extra brightness and blurring. A new-to-me product from this year's Sun Safety Kit that I've been reaching for from time to time. It's one of the very few chemical sunscreens that doesn't irritate my eyes.
😍  Urban Decay Face Bond Self Setting Waterproof Foundation because it really is self-setting and it laaaaasts
💋  Prep lips with Tatcha The Kissu Lip Scrub 0.4 oz / 12g
❤️  Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez Soft Pinch Tinted Lip Oil Stain Delight leaves a beautiful stain on the lips
🍉  Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Niacinamide Hue Drops Sun Glow Serum 1.35 oz / 40 mL  again, to complement that "tan" that only I notice I've gotten from vacation. Ha!
Week 32 - The (Mostly) "Sleeping Beauties" Makeup Capsule
I enjoy putting together a capsule for the sleeping beauties prompt because it's a reminder to shop my stash for those products that can get lost in the shuffle. Products with an asterisk next to its name are the "sleeping beauty" items. This will be my makeup choices for Thursday, Friday and Saturday this week.
32 - Sleeping Beauties Capsule.jpg
Spoiler
COMPLEXION
- Primer - I'll rotate between GUERLAIN Parure Gold 24K Radiance Primer 1.2 oz / 35 mL* and e.l.f. Poreless Putty Primer, depending on what's going on with my skin
- Foundation - NARS Light Reflecting Advanced Skincare Medium Coverage Foundation Fiji* (Thursday) or mix of Summer Fridays ShadeDrops Mineral Milk Sunscreen SPF 30 1.7 oz / 50 mL* + Drunk Elephant D-Bronzi™ Bronzing Drops with Peptides* (Friday) or Victoria Beckham Beauty Priming Moisturizer - Golden* (Sunday)

EYES
- Glossier Skywash Liquid-to-Powder Sheer Matte Eyeshadow Tint Echo* - I don't remember when I purchased this, which suggests it's been sleeping in my stash for a while. 😆
- Makeup by Mario Master Mattes Brightening Pencil - Light 1 (discontinued)
- #SEPHORA COLLECTION Love The Lift Curling + Volumizing Waterproof Mascara Ultra Black # (not pictured)

CHEEKS
- Blush - Rhode Skin Pocket Blush - sleepy girl
- Highlight - NUDESTIX Nudies Glow Cream Highlighter Stick Hey, Honey* - I'm not sure about this one; it doesn't really show up on my skin - hmmm...🤔

LIPS
It's unlikely that there'll be any declutters from the two minimalist makeup capsules. The "sleeping beauties" capsule, on the other hand, might have 1 or 2 items decluttered or earmarked for the chopping block. Stay tuned.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi  love your choices for these capsules! I definitely have to get back to participating in this thread and shopping my stash more - I have such a backlog of "sleeping beauties" as well as new products I haven't even tried yet! I would be interested in trying the Tower 28 foundation at some point, but I don't need any more foundations/base products at the moment (which I'm sure you know from my numerous swatches in the foundation & concealer matches thread!). I am going to have to put myself on hold from buying any more face products for a while; I have been keeping my "haven't tried these yet" products in a few repurposed shoeboxes divided by category, but recently the unused face products box has overflowed 😅 🙈

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Always love having you and seeing your capsules on this thread @caitbird, but completely understand that you're busy, and sometimes, a weekly capsule isn't how you decide what makeup you will wear. I tend to be a creature of habit and so the weekly bag of makeup is fine with me, with adjustments made along the way to address any events during the week or if I'm feeling like a different mix of products.

"recently the unused face products box has overflowed" - hahaha! I hear that. Some box or bin is usually at capacity or overflowing, it seems. We just have to keep chipping away at it.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi liking this selection of products! It’s always nice to have an easy rotation for vacation looks. Interesting about the UD foundation. I haven’t had the opportunity to try it, but i like the idea that it self-sets. As much as i love setting powders to really seal in a look, i admit that i avoid most foundations in the summer so that I don’t have to apply any more powder than i have to.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@cianni, the self setting and long wearing feature of the Urban Decay foundation is what drew me to it. It lives up to its claims too - I put it to a test, wearing it to a spa day (I don’t typically wear makeup when I’m at the spa) but it lasted through sauna, steam room, whirlpool & a massage, with little of it wearing off or wearing down. 🤯

I like to keep my makeup light in the summer and for the most part, with foundations, I just use it along my cheeks to even tone and this one has been great because I don’t feel like I need to use a setting powder over it. I wish / hope they come out with a corresponding concealer. 🤞🏼 It’s fairly cool still here so I’ll definitely be reaching for this one to see how it performs when temps get really warm.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Week 31 in Review - Lipstick Throwdown
31 - Lippie Smackdown.jpg
The focus of this week's capsules were the lips, with a smack  down  being the main event - a different lippie every day, and occasionally, different lipsticks the same day because sometimes that's just how we do things here on this thread, am I right?  😉
31 - Lip Swatches.jpg
These chopping block / battle contests have been inspired by the brilliant @cianni  and @ather - thank you, ladies, for helping to kickstart the process of my letting go of some of the lippies in my stash. Ouch 💔, it hurts to say that, but I need to hoard less. Yes, that's "hoard less" - hoarding in general will likely continue just a little bit more 😂; it's a work in progress.

Week 31 Declutters
31 - July declutter recap.jpg
Spoiler
🏡 HUDA BEAUTY Lip Contour 2.0 Automatic Matte Lip Pencil Pinky Brown is a lovely color, but is just too creamy for me for a pencil and the tip has broken off more than once this week. 😔 It's going to be passed along to someone who likes the Huda lip contour pencils. Ummm, @cianni, I have no idea how I missed that the shade was right in front of my eyes, so clear. And yet, I've missed it this whole time. They say the memory is the first to go ... I'm thinking eye sight might be up there, too! The name is literally right there!!! 😂🤣😂 I tried it with a balm and it looks and feels nice but I'm gonna let it go still.
31 - Huda Lip Contour Pinky Brown.jpg

🏡  The color of MAKEUP BY MARIO MoistureGlow™ Plumping Lip Color Soft Blush when swatched is gorgeous but on my naturally pigmented lips it takes on a pasty pink hue that is not at all attractive on me. It looks better paired with the Huda lip contour, but I have so many similar shades of both items that I'll be re-homing this one as well. I was going to toss it because I used the doe foot applicator directly onto my lips, but the recipient is fine with it so off this goes where it will be more loved.

🏡  I really wanted to like this Reina Rebelde Mini Bold Lip Color Stick - Divina but it's another lip product that shows up differently on my lips - it shows up a much bolder pink on my lips. I don't wear that hue very often and have lippies in that range that I prefer over this one, so this will make its way to a new home.

🗑  Valentino Magnificent Smudgeproof Volumizing Mascara smudged and smeared on me, which I attribute to my oily lids. I sadly forgot to use a disposable wand for this one and cannot rehome it so it's getting tossed.
