What is a capsule makeup collection?
A capsule makeup collection is a selection of makeup products that can be used to put together different looks for a variety of occasions. For some of us, that may mean a group of essential products for your everyday look plus a few extra items for a more glam or dramatic look; and, for others of us, that may mean, a lineup of our holy grail product(s) in each makeup category. My ideal capsule makeup collection probably falls somewhere in between - we'll (hopefully) find out at the end of the year! I don't see myself as a minimalist, but I don't have an extensive collection of makeup either. I appreciate the collections of people who fall within both camps but I float somewhere in between - on the one hand, my brow product collection would earn a gold star if we were using a minimalist approach to makeup; my lip product lineup, on the other hand, would not. 🤣 It would most definitely not.
Why have a capsule makeup collection?
Everyone will have their own reasons for having (or not having) a more streamlined makeup collection. Over the years, I've just become more interested in having less beauty products on hand (well, except for lip products, lol) - a handful of items I use or reach for more frequently with maybe a few additional products that are go-to's for me for special events or occasions. Don't get me wrong, I love trying new products and I don't see that changing. I just like the idea of having a simpler collection (I appreciate that "simpler" can be relative), curated to my needs and lifestyle.
Why weekly?
A few years ago, beauty & lifestyle blogger Serein Wu, did a weekly series (on her blog and YouTube channel), Makeup Bag Monday, where she rotated her makeup bag each week with new product launches and makeup already in her collection. Every Monday, she shared the products she selected for the upcoming week and provided detailed makeup reviews on the makeup she used for the previous week. I may not post detailed reviews, but will at least try to include a weekly recap (probably at the end of the week) of what products I like and which ones didn't work for me. If weekly works for you, great. If not, feel free to join in based on what works best for you.
What if I don't have enough products to fit the theme for a full face?
No need for your entire makeup capsule to fit the weekly theme(s). Just one will do. And, even if you don't have one that fits squarely within a theme, feel free to post your makeup capsule. We'd love to see what you're using and hear your feedback on the products as you put them to use.
@ather Good to hear! I know some products we use more or less of comparatively so had always wondered!
Today, I achieved something I have been aiming for, for a long time. I've always been a full-face makeup kinda girl; but ever since the pandemic, there are times when I want to go out with minimal makeup. It's really hard for me: I have uneven skin tone, pitted cystic acne scars, and broken capillaries. Tinted moisturizers and serum bases can be too sheer, too oily, and too dark.
While staring at myself in the mirror this morning, it dawned on me, what about Charlotte Tilbury Lunar New Year Airbrush Flawless Finish Setting Powder 1 Fair ? I tried it a few times, but didn't like it. It was too dark and too heavy, but I bought the Lunar New Year compact last year so I kept it. This morning I tried it on my bare skin with a completely different outcome. It is exactly what I've been looking for all these years! Just enough coverage to mute my uneven tone. A little concealer over the broken capillaries. (Nothing helps hide the scars.)
In addition, I tried ILIA Liquid Powder Eye Shadow Tint Cork . I don't know what color; it looked taupe to me. I don't remember if it is from the Rewards Bazaar are a GWP. I don't care for cream eyeshadows, and this was no exception, so I tossed it.
I also used the PAT McGRATH LABS LUST: Lip Gloss Bronze Divinity , the one we got in the gratis box in December. OMGosh! I don't care for lip gloss, but this one is outstanding! I love how it feels and looks. Definitely a keeper!
Oh, this all started when I drew on my eyebrows since I don't have any. Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz® Ultra-Slim Precision Eyebrow Pencil Taupe . This is my personal project pan it. Not because I don't like it, but because it's almost finished.
Next time I try my minimalist look, I plan to add a touch of blush or bronzer.
If you made it this far...😘💞💋
@Titian06 I am glad you discovered something new that works for you! I didn't realize Ilia has a liquid powder eyeshadow. Ohh I need to still try the PM gloss. I have heard so many positive things. I am looking forward to hearing how adding the blush to this look goes ☺️
@Titian06 , that's awesome that you rediscovered something and included it AND you're happy about the coverage!!!
@Titian06 You have no idea how much I loved to read your post. I'm someone who doesn't go out without base products either.... so understand where you're coming from. What a win to find a quick and easy application with a product that wasn't doing anything for you is such a bonus! Bummer about the liquid eyeshadow, but you tried. And the PMG lip glosses all feel that nice! They were one of the first ones I found with that plush bouncy type of texture and I may or may not have more than.... a few... now lol.
I can't wait to see how you like the CT powder with blush and bronzer next!
Thanks for the kind words, @missjeanie ! 💖💖💖 I have a Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Cream Eyeshadow Stick Limited Edition (I don't remember which color) that I got through the Rewards Bazaar. I've used it before as a one and done, so I'm not too disappointed about the cream. 🙂
That's awesome about the CT powder @Titian06! Did you apply it with the sponge / puff that comes with the powder or a brush? Or a beauty blender?
I have broken capillaries, too. So much fun <<she says with dryness>> Have you tried Dr. Jart+ Mini Cicapair Color Correcting Treatment SPF 30 15 mL/ .50 fl oz I've found that can help with the capillaries and redness.
@itsfi - I used a dense Cover FX powder brush and tapped it all over rather than swiping. I've used the Dr. Jart+ Mini Cicapair Color Correcting Treatment SPF 30 15 mL/ .50 fl oz on and off ever since it was released. It's a love/hate relationship because the dry down is too dark.
This all is so encouraging! @Titian06. I'm thrilled for you! 🥳
Whatever happened to bring your CT from last year to mind, that is just so lucky.
(And I totally agree, that gloss right? It's sooooo nice on the lips and pretty to look at too. 😄)
Thanks, @CynthieLu ! Threads like these with all this creativity are so helpful to someone like me! I'm creative to a degree, but it usually needs a kickstart to get going. 🤣 I reorganized my makeup over my Christmas vacation, so I have to stop and stare at my containers to think what's where. 🙄 I'm sure that's why I thought of that powder. I can't wait to work on this look some more!
Soo true, @Titian06 Collectively together BIC has so much that can inspire us and all the things we share with eachother. It's so great to see what everyone is doing, or how thier using something. I definitely pick up alot of inspo from this space. 💕
And you make another good point, it is good too clean and reorganize the makeup every so often, we find forgotten treasures. 😁
This weeks capsule felt pretty easy to bring together! I keep a make up bag in my truck with touch up/essential items, including a shampoo/conditioner and basic skincare in case I'm stuck somewhere overnight. I also keep a make up bag in my purse that generally has the essentials in it. I pretty much pulled all of these from my purse make up bag. I aim for items that I can apply with my fingers for the most part though I will have a beauty blender and one shadow blender brush, and one powder brush on hand this week. Hoping to see if I can also minimize the tools I use this week.
I'll also have my project pan make up items to pull from as well which include...
@missjeanie Great capsule picks! I would like to try out the Dior Concealer. I like how you use this all over instead of a foundation. I am going to try it out. Do you find it works better in the colder months vs the warmer months? Your YSL palette looks beautiful. The shades are so pretty.
@Mellmars1185 I actually think the DIOR Backstage Concealer 0N looks better on my dry skin in the summer when it holds more moisture. At this point its just sooooo close to being finished that I'm trying to layer moisturizers and facial oils to finish it off. I used it today as foundation and I figure I may be done it before the week is out. I do like using concealers like this though... makes life a little quicker on days I'm on the run! Let me know if you try it out, I'd love to hear what you think!
This is a really good mix! Your purse make up bag it's just straight #goals. 🏆 @missjeanie.
I have SPF, lip balms galore, some hand care and usually a travel perfume. I'm learning something here about what I could have and keep on me for touch ups. You are definitely inspiring me to shake it up and create something with more fun and more options for this week's challenge. The neutrals palette is a great pick, it can go with anything. And if it's a formula you can just swipe on, that's even better. 😉
@CynthieLu Oh there's also a travel size fragrance and SPF in there too!! I keep everything in a tiny IPSY make up bag and luckily my purse is normally big enough. Never know when you'll need to freshen up for a fun time on the go!
Gotta love the purses than can fit everything @missjeanie 😉
@missjeanie - The YSL palette is sooo pretty! A "plain" palette is the best to keep handy--it will go with anything! 🙂
