What is a capsule makeup collection?
A capsule makeup collection is a selection of makeup products that can be used to put together different looks for a variety of occasions. For some of us, that may mean a group of essential products for your everyday look plus a few extra items for a more glam or dramatic look; and, for others of us, that may mean, a lineup of our holy grail product(s) in each makeup category. My ideal capsule makeup collection probably falls somewhere in between - we'll (hopefully) find out at the end of the year! I don't see myself as a minimalist, but I don't have an extensive collection of makeup either. I appreciate the collections of people who fall within both camps but I float somewhere in between - on the one hand, my brow product collection would earn a gold star if we were using a minimalist approach to makeup; my lip product lineup, on the other hand, would not. 🤣 It would most definitely not.
Why have a capsule makeup collection?
Everyone will have their own reasons for having (or not having) a more streamlined makeup collection. Over the years, I've just become more interested in having less beauty products on hand (well, except for lip products, lol) - a handful of items I use or reach for more frequently with maybe a few additional products that are go-to's for me for special events or occasions. Don't get me wrong, I love trying new products and I don't see that changing. I just like the idea of having a simpler collection (I appreciate that "simpler" can be relative), curated to my needs and lifestyle.
Why weekly?
A few years ago, beauty & lifestyle blogger Serein Wu, did a weekly series (on her blog and YouTube channel), Makeup Bag Monday, where she rotated her makeup bag each week with new product launches and makeup already in her collection. Every Monday, she shared the products she selected for the upcoming week and provided detailed makeup reviews on the makeup she used for the previous week. I may not post detailed reviews, but will at least try to include a weekly recap (probably at the end of the week) of what products I like and which ones didn't work for me. If weekly works for you, great. If not, feel free to join in based on what works best for you.
What if I don't have enough products to fit the theme for a full face?
No need for your entire makeup capsule to fit the weekly theme(s). Just one will do. And, even if you don't have one that fits squarely within a theme, feel free to post your makeup capsule. We'd love to see what you're using and hear your feedback on the products as you put them to use.
I haven’t done a capsule in quite a while but I went on a 10-day trip in September and packed some of my favorites. So I guess this would be a “Tried and True” capsule
I bought this SC hanging organizer and it’s awesome. It fits quite a bit.
From all of the above, the Clio is not a go-to but it does give a more subdued look which I wanted to bring with me. The Etude is also not a favorite but I wanted to give it some more use. The Heimish mascara is still in the box. Everything else is products that I’ve really enjoyed and reach for and would recommend.
I love all these products. I’m also missing the Tower 28 Beauty SunnyDays SPF 30 Tinted Sunscreen Foundation 30 PCH but I just ran out. The Unleashia cushion I don’t love as much as the JSM but it’s still pretty good. All the others are true loves. I wish the Hourglass was just a little lighter so I didn’t have to be so careful when applying it. The shades are so different for the brand, which I appreciate.
I love Burberry Goddess, it’s so delicious. Mood Ring is a fun scent. The travel atomizers are Maison Margiela 'REPLICA' By The Fireplace 3.4 oz / 100 mL and Lattafa Eclair, which are also really good.
Finally, some of my most used/versatile brushes.
I hope you had a fantastic trip! Excellent capsule! I love this organizer, I feel like it would come in handy (no pun intended). Thank you for sharing your thoughts and what has worked! Beautiful photos! What are some things you keep in mind when packing for a trip? I’m always one to bring everything I like how thoughtful and precise your capsule is. Beautiful! And Great job! @makeitup305
@makeitup305, this was your trip to see your family? Hope you had a fabulous time!
I have a similar makeup organizer from the Sephora Collection and loooove how much it holds! Which YSL quad is that one?
@itsfi thank you! It was great to see and spend time with everyone. Nothing too exciting, though, just lots of lab work and doctor visits since it's easier and more convenient over there. This is the Yves Saint Laurent Couture Mini Clutch Eyeshadow Palette 710 Over Brun quad which is in the top 3 for favorite palettes I've bought this year. The color story is super flattering on me and the formula is awesome.
Over Brun is a beauty; that’s great it ranks so high in your palettes of the year @makeitup305. I have Stora Dolls and another from the first set of quads in this collection. YSL did a wonderful job with these.
@itsfi if YSL does a good BF sale I might pick up Stora Dolls. I've wanted that one since it came out but got Over Brun instead and now I just want both lol
They're both beautiful quads @makeitup305, and different enough tonally to justify both. I like the cool / neutral lean of Stora Dolls, Over Brun is a little too warm for me - that is what I am telling myself 😂 and also reminding myself that I have a few palettes with similar color stories to Over Brun. I don't remember specific dates, but I have a recollection that YSL does have some good sales at the end of the year, whether for BF or something next month.
@itsfi that's what I'm hoping for! I'm not in a rush to get it but it's been on my mind for long enough that I feel like it's time lol
@makeitup305 I hope you had a great trip! It looks like you packed some fantastic products for it! What is the quad (face?) palette with the round pans?
@caitbird it's a Chanel blush palette. I don't think this one is available anymore but there's a deeper version on the Chanel site and a super bright one available for the holidays. There's supposed to be a neutral blush palette releasing in the spring, I think.
@makeitup305 oh, thanks for the info! I've never tried anything by Chanel before but this looks pretty - I will have to investigate their others!
@caitbird I think this is the only Chanel product I have along with the cream bronzer. It's usually too expensive and not my style. I do want to pick up that new blush palette coming out next year. If I see a sneak peek again I'll tag you.
@makeitup305 I hope you had a nice trip! This bag is so great for traveling. Your photo really captures how much you can fit in the bag!
@Mellmars1185 I've had several SC makeup cases for travel over the years and this one is one of my favorites. I packed it to the brim lol
@makeitup305 I have this one also. I love how you can hang it on the back of a door if needed. It is my favourite travel bag. I enjoy seeing how others use it!
@Mellmars1185 I cut the seam that separated the smaller compartment on the flap so I could put more brushes there. There's the tiny holes from where the stitch was but it doesn't affect the bag otherwise.
@makeitup305 Smart idea! I think this bag can handle it! It is really durable 💪
2 more months and 2024 will be something we look back on - it's all gone by so fast and these last 2 months will undoubtedly fly by even more quickly. A recap, monthly summary, and new themes for November.
Week 44 Recap - no real surprises from The "Sleeper Hits" Makeup Capsule. I enjoyed pretty much everything in the capsule.
🏆 Top Shelf - No new product to add this week, but there are a few that may wind up here soon-ish.
😍 Standouts - The Clio waterproof mascara is really working out very nicely - so much so that I've looked into the other variations the brand offers. Future haul? Very likely. The Em Cosmetics cushion compact is a big like; I'll keep an eye on how often I reach for it on the weekends. Both the eye primers are doing their thing quite well.
🌺 Promising start but too early to tell - Newer-to-me items that need more uses. Time will tell how good these are compared to other similar products in my stash.
* The lilybyred highlighters - I'm not a big highlighter person but these have been impressive.
* Danessa Myricks Beauty Yummy Skin Blurring Balm Powder - good results with blurring and minimizing appearance of pores, especially on my nose. Not great as an eye shadow primer. Will need more time to test this out with different complexion product but so far, so good.
👋 Declutters - I brought the Nudestix back in to try as a primer for my nose and it didn't work for me, which is fine because that DM balm really did work out well. The NUDESTIX Nudescreen Lip Primer SPF 30 Natural Natural is going back in the declutter bin to be donated
October Declutters - There was a little more adding and subtracting this month. I initially included the Missha serum BB in the declutter bin but I'm wondering if the greyness in this one might mix well with some of my liquid contour products that could use a little more grey. Hmmm... I'm going to bring this back into the stash for a little project.
After taking the Nudestix out and adding into the declutter bin the ROSE INC Lip Cream Longwearing Matte Liquid Lipstick with Squalane Mortal Flame # from the Battle of the Red Lipsticks, our October totals are a follows:
Month-to-Date = 8
Year-to-Date = 96
November Themes - The original post (OP) has been updated with the capsule prompts for November. ⬆️ With the Sephora holiday savings event well underway (as well as sales elsewhere), there are some sale-related themes sprinkled in our November capsule schedule. 😉 Oh, and don't forget to share those magnificent hauls on the Neoteric & Necessary November Hauls 2024 🛍
@itsfi you didn't like the Amuse? I like mine but prefer Dinto if we're doing similar price points.
@makeitup305, the formulation is nice; the shade on this when, on initial application and the stain it leaves is too bright for my liking. I thought about trying another shade but I have a good amount of Kbeauty makeup to work my way through as it is.
