Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Hey BIC beauties! One of my goals this year is to try to put together a makeup capsule with a handful (okay, maybe a large handful, in my case) of products that will work for me for an every day look and special occasions. Given my current collection, I won't need to be starting from scratch. 😂 So, I'm treating this capsule makeup collection challenge like a shop my stash and declutter adventure all in one. Would love for you to join me if and when you can.

If this is something that interests you or just piques your curiosity, please feel free to use this thread to document and challenge yourself to

(1) use what you have / shop your stash; and

(2) determine which products in your collection to keep, which to declutter, and which to try again another day. All with the goal of curating a set of makeup products that will help you achieve a signature look - and maybe a few additional products for other looks in your daily life, including looks for special occasions or events.

Every week, I will post a group of makeup products I plan to choose from (i.e., shopping my stash) for my looks during the week. The themes / prompts are guides and if you have a certain interpretation or approach you want to take with it, go for it! Not every product has to fit squarely within the theme; it can be just one item.

CURRENT MAKEUP CAPSULE THEME:

WEEK 28 (July 8 - 14) - The "If I Were To Curate My Ultimate Makeup Capsule" Makeup Capsule (aka The "These are My Favorite Products" Makeup Capsule) - We're over halfway through the year, BIC beauties. Have you discovered or rediscovered any favorite makeup items from the first half of the year? Show us what products would make up your ideal makeup capsule. I know I'm curious to see everyone's most-loved or "go to" products.

Upcoming Makeup Capsule Themes: [Updated 6.24.2024] Take a sneak peek at the themes to come.

Spoiler
WEEK 29 (July 15 - 21) - The Sticks and (Gem)Stones Makeup Capsule and/or The Pops of Colour: Summer Edition Makeup Capsule - Have some stick makeup in your stash that could use a little love? Time to bring 'em out include one or more stick product in a capsule (thanks @danielledanielle missjeanie). Stick makeup not your thing? All good; we're bringing back our previous Pops Of Colour theme (thank you @missjeanie), for a second option for this week's capsule - pick one or more products that add a summery pop of color to your look. Feeling adventurous - curate a capsule championing both themes.

WEEK 30 (July 22 - 28) - The BIC Inspired Summer Edition Makeup Capsule and/or The Pan It! Makeup Capsule - Okay, BIC Beauties, here we go - we have a new capsule theme as well as a well loved one - assemble a capsule of one or more beauties inspired or enabled by the fabulous members of our Sephora Beauty Insider Community? Or, put together a look with one or more items from your project pan. Or, meld the two prompts together for a capsule of both BIC inspired and pan it! products!

WEEK 31 (July 29 - August 4) - The New, Old or "Is It Time For This To Go?" Makeup Capsule - Did you pick up some new (or new-to-you) beauties this month that you want to play with (or keeping playing with)? Are there one or more tried-and-true products, or sleeping beauties in your collection that you want or need to put to use? Or, are there products in your stash that need to be put up on the chopping block (such an awesome theme, @cianni)? Here's your chance to curate a capsule with one or more products from one or any combination of these categories.

What is a capsule makeup collection?

A capsule makeup collection is a selection of makeup products that can be used to put together different looks for a variety of occasions. For some of us, that may mean a group of essential products for your everyday look plus a few extra items for a more glam or dramatic look; and, for others of us, that may mean, a lineup of our holy grail product(s) in each makeup category. My ideal capsule makeup collection probably falls somewhere in between - we'll (hopefully) find out at the end of the year! I don't see myself as a minimalist, but I don't have an extensive collection of makeup either. I appreciate the collections of people who fall within both camps but I float somewhere in between - on the one hand, my brow product collection would earn a gold star if we were using a minimalist approach to makeup; my lip product lineup, on the other hand, would not. 🤣 It would most definitely not.

Why have a capsule makeup collection?

Everyone will have their own reasons for having (or not having) a more streamlined makeup collection. Over the years, I've just become more interested in having less beauty products on hand (well, except for lip products, lol) - a handful of items I use or reach for more frequently with maybe a few additional products that are go-to's for me for special events or occasions.  Don't get me wrong, I love trying new products and I don't see that changing. I just like the idea of having a simpler collection (I appreciate that "simpler" can be relative), curated to my needs and lifestyle.

Why weekly?
A few years ago, beauty & lifestyle blogger Serein Wu, did a weekly series (on her blog and YouTube channel), Makeup Bag Monday, where she rotated her makeup bag each week with new product launches and makeup already in her collection. Every Monday, she shared the products she selected for the upcoming week and provided detailed makeup reviews on the makeup she used for the previous week. I may not post detailed reviews, but will at least try to include a weekly recap (probably at the end of the week) of what products I like and which ones didn't work for me.  If weekly works for you, great. If not, feel free to join in based on what works best for you.

What if I don't have enough products to fit the theme for a full face?

No need for your entire makeup capsule to fit the weekly theme(s). Just one will do. And, even if you don't have one that fits squarely within a theme, feel free to post your makeup capsule. We'd love to see what you're using and hear your feedback on the products as you put them to use.

All are invited to join in this adventure, whenever and however is most effective for you. I'm excited to see what results from this experiment.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Thank you so much @CynthieLu  😊 WA does make such creamy products, it’s fun to consider a capsule and keep these things in mind! I appreciate it ❤️

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@peculiarzmakeup, always so good to see you on the threads; welcome! Join in anytime; we'd love to have you and are always interested in seeing what beauties folks are using.

Those are definitely the good stuff! I love how well edited and thoughtful the MERIT line is - they've expanded a lot from when they first started but the pieces in their collection work beautifully. Stockholm is a beautiful pink and Baby has that lovely "is that her natural lip color or is she wearing lipstick" quality about it. Yes to Westman Atelier; Petal is my favorite of her cheek shades.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Thank you so much 😊 @itsfi I had the exact same thought about the lip shade! And that baby pink is so colorful I just love it. 😍

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Pulled a few products from this week's larger Dior focused capsule for a (relatively) quick, simple and easy look. This capsule within a capsule approach has been working out well for me; happy we had a chat about that @caitbird

25 - The Good Stuff - Dior KISS Edit.jpg

Dior Capture Dreamskin 1-Minute Mask 2.5 oz / 75 mL to address a pesky (and ill-positioned) pimple and some texture on my jawline.

Sticking with a multi-tasking approach, I used Dior Forever Glow Star Filter Multi-Use Complexion Enhancing Booster 2N as a primer and Dior Backstage Concealer 2N and Dior Dior Forever Skin Correct Full-Coverage Concealer 2 Neutral as my foundation and concealer, to even tone and as concealer for the under eyes, blemishes and redness.

Eyes were kept simple with a wash of color to my lids from the 2011 Fall-Winter Ready-To-Wear Makeup Palette, a couple o quick strokes of Dior Diorshow Iconic Overcurl Waterproof Mascara Black and Dior Diorshow On Stage Crayon Kohl Liner 529 Beige in the lower waterline. This is smidge more cool toned than the Makeup by Mario Light 1 (discontinued) but can easily be made to work.

Cheeks also came from the 2011 Fall-Winter Ready-To-Wear Makeup Palette with a blend of the powder blush and the two brown toned eyeshadows; though if I redid this look, I might add the Dior Forever Glow Maximizer Longwear Liquid Highlighter 014 Rosy to this subcapsule. And, possibly Dior Forever Glow Maximizer Longwear Liquid Highlighter 016 Bronze though that would make for a more full face look. Which maybe I'll go for later this week, and perhaps try my hand at a different technique 😮 a la the  Cheek Challenge Summer 2024: Choose Your Own Adventure

Lips started off with Dior Dior Addict Lip Maximizer Plumping Gloss 001 Pink (mini) and Dior Rouge Dior Contour No-Transfer Lip Liner Pencil 772 Classic. Touch ups after lunch will be courtesy of Dior Dior Addict Lip Glow 038 Rose Nude because I don't have a lot of time to fuss with liner this afternoon, and this balm is comfortable to wear, quick to apply, easy to keep in my pant's pocket, and adds a nice muted pinky-rose tint to my lips that's buildable

I've set it all with Dior Forever Perfect Fix Fresh Settinng Mist High Perfection Longwear & Hydrating - this is probably the older version. This is a good setting spray but I feel like I have a lot of setting sprays; and, while good may not be good enough as far as which setting sprays stay and which go, I'm going to keep this one as I have just slightly more than a 1/3 of the bottle left and I do like this spray. Not pictured but I also used Dior Dior Forever Loose Cushion Powder to set the concealer under my eyes.

And, yes, there's an additional Dior makeup bag added to this week's capsules. It was just easier to grab another bag to keep this group of beauties together. It's a pretty roomy bag so "fits" was (thankfully) not an issue.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Awesome capsule @itsfi . I haven't tried the newer versions of the Dior concealers but I've heard good things. The Skin Glow is a true love for me. I also have 2N and ended up buying 3N to slighly deepen some foundations. 4N is looking good as a cream bronzer lol

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@makeitup305, thank you; I like my Dior collection; it took some time to build out. I was nervous about some of the reformulations based on what I’ve read but so far the newer items I have from the brand - primer, foundation, concealer - have performed just as well. I have a couple of their older versions of the single eyeshadows but don’t see myself picking up more from the newer range.

I’m most interested (and concerned) about the Re formulation of the Dior Backstage F&B foundation - concealer is fine. I have heard some saying that the new F&B isn’t as good and the colors have changed a little. Hoping that is not the case. I loved the old F&B foundation - 1.5 was a great, great match for me  😘 but I swatched it and 2N in store and it looks like if they had a 1.75 that would be best for me. 😆 We shall see; I have a handful of foundations in my stash to use first. That’ll give it some time too for the store to restock some shades. Lol 😆

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

From what I recall swatching, the newer version is more luminous @itsfi .  It definitely looks lighter but I don't think I swatched it long enough to witness the dry down and whether or not it oxidized/darkened.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Ahhh, thank you @danielledanielle! I’ll have to remember to swatch them the next time I’m in the store that carries the F&B foundation.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

I agree, as always your capsule picks are so well thought out! 💞 The D'ior looks phenomenal and a new roomy bag too, these are all so lovely!  @itsfi

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@CynthieLu, thank you. Shopping my stash this week was a blast!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Beautiful makeup capsule collection, I really love the variety and the well thought out product picks, beautiful photos! @itsfi

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Thank you so much @peculiarzmakeup; very kind of you to say. I’m pretty happy with my Dior collection. It’s going to be hard for me to declutter anything at the end of the week; I’m not actually sure I will. That’s not a bad thing. I really do like these beauties. 😍

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

I can relate to the having a week of having nothing to declutter it is totally not bad at all! I think it is a reflection moment! I am happy you are enjoying everything ❤️ @itsfi

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

"a reflection moment" ~ I like that @peculiarzmakeup; I like that a lot! Thank you!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Perfect summer capsule @CynthieLu ! How are you liking the PMG pencils? I love DM Bellini, it's such a fun pop!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Thank you @makeitup305 😊💕

The PMG Pencils are a nice little lippie, I haven't had to sharpen them yet so hopefully it's a smooth process. 😉

They are not overly drying but I do have to pair them with a good gloss or oil too keep my lips feeling comfortable.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@CynthieLu, Clarins Lip Perfector is an underrated product; it wears beautifully. Ahhh, ND Gold Palette 1.0 - Python is a stunner!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Thank you kindly @itsfi. 💛  I was actually very close to getting my hands on Gold 1.O before it left our shelves but I missed out. I think Sunset makes a good consolation imo. It has beautiful golds, coppers and bronzes. ☺️

The new Gold palette I'm telling myself I don't need. Must. Stay. Strong. 😅

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Ah! @CynthieLu  I adore that pallete (I don’t own it it’s just so beautiful definatley sunset vibes) amazing week capsule collection always so great to see your picks 🫶

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Thank you so much @peculiarzmakeup I feel the same, I adore so many palettes, many I don't own, I just admire them from afar. Lol. 😊

Last year when they were removing ND from all the Canadian stores they put all her palette's on clearance, I was very lucky to get this one on a fantastic sale.
