What is a capsule makeup collection?
A capsule makeup collection is a selection of makeup products that can be used to put together different looks for a variety of occasions. For some of us, that may mean a group of essential products for your everyday look plus a few extra items for a more glam or dramatic look; and, for others of us, that may mean, a lineup of our holy grail product(s) in each makeup category. My ideal capsule makeup collection probably falls somewhere in between - we'll (hopefully) find out at the end of the year! I don't see myself as a minimalist, but I don't have an extensive collection of makeup either. I appreciate the collections of people who fall within both camps but I float somewhere in between - on the one hand, my brow product collection would earn a gold star if we were using a minimalist approach to makeup; my lip product lineup, on the other hand, would not. 🤣 It would most definitely not.
Why have a capsule makeup collection?
Everyone will have their own reasons for having (or not having) a more streamlined makeup collection. Over the years, I've just become more interested in having less beauty products on hand (well, except for lip products, lol) - a handful of items I use or reach for more frequently with maybe a few additional products that are go-to's for me for special events or occasions. Don't get me wrong, I love trying new products and I don't see that changing. I just like the idea of having a simpler collection (I appreciate that "simpler" can be relative), curated to my needs and lifestyle.
Why weekly?
A few years ago, beauty & lifestyle blogger Serein Wu, did a weekly series (on her blog and YouTube channel), Makeup Bag Monday, where she rotated her makeup bag each week with new product launches and makeup already in her collection. Every Monday, she shared the products she selected for the upcoming week and provided detailed makeup reviews on the makeup she used for the previous week. I may not post detailed reviews, but will at least try to include a weekly recap (probably at the end of the week) of what products I like and which ones didn't work for me. If weekly works for you, great. If not, feel free to join in based on what works best for you.
What if I don't have enough products to fit the theme for a full face?
No need for your entire makeup capsule to fit the weekly theme(s). Just one will do. And, even if you don't have one that fits squarely within a theme, feel free to post your makeup capsule. We'd love to see what you're using and hear your feedback on the products as you put them to use.
@CynthieLu Thank you! I tested out the Fenty foundation stucks while putting this capsule today. I am looking forward to seeing how they wear.
Eeek, I lost my post just now...here we go again!
Week 1 recap - I will keep most of the products for future rotations. I noticed that the MILK MAKEUP Matte Cream Bronzer Stick Baked had an off smell to it. I have had it a long time, and it is a beautiful shade, but it is time to let this one go. I have similar cream bronzer by Rare Beauty that is not expired, so I will continue to use those.
The IT Cosmetics Superhero Elastic Stretch Volumizing and Lengthening Mascara Super Black is nice because it doesn't transfer to my eyelids. The downside for me is that too much product comes out on the wand. This makes it hard to separate the lashes and have more of a natural look. I am going to keep this one around for a bit longer because I do like the staying power it has.
The product that pleasantly surprised me was the bareMinerals Ready Touch up Veil. It gave my makeup a blurred effect and kept my concealer set. I have had this in my stash for a while. I am glad I rediscovered it.
@Mellmars1185 Bummer about the IT mascara... I hate it when mascaras come out with so much product on the brush. Do you think if it dries out a bit it may be better?
@missjeanie Hmm, good question. If it dries out, I think less product will come out. I'm not too sure how it will apply to my lashes. I will hang onto this one and see what happens!
@Mellmars1185, your swatches are really helpful, thank you! Do you blend with your fingers or a brush? Yaaay, that makes me happy to hear you rediscovered a product that you are now enjoying! Yaaay! Will be interested to see if it sticks around for the whole year and if it finds a place in your "loves".
@itsfi For cream brozers, I usually dip my brush into the product and apply to my face. I always underpaint when using cream brozers.
Thank you @Mellmars1185! That's helpful; I'm used to powder bronzers but like the idea of a cream one, especially in the winter but the color can be so pigmented - not a bad thing, but that just means I need to use an extra light hand. Underpainting is such a great technique. 😍
WEEK 1 RECAP
The first week of this capsule challenge went fairly well; I was able to put together 4 looks with the makeup I set aside for the week - 2 (slightly) different workday faces, a quick bit of makeup for this weekend, and a going out look.
Here's what I came up with and some observations and next steps.

OTHER:
I'll post my makeup selections for next week by Monday morning, maybe before then.
@itsfi Excellent reminder that I have a Missha cushion I should probably be using up. Look at you having declutters already after week 1!! I'm impressed!
Oh gosh, I have so many cushion compacts @missjeanie; all in various stages of use, including quite a few that have yet to be open. Like this one that has been decluttered - not a good sign when I look at the box and the expiration date is months away. 🙄 It feels like going through my sheet mask stash all over again ... but it was so much easier and faster to work through those - sure, there's just this one face, but there's 365 / 366 days in a year and back then, my face could handle using a sheet mask at least once, if not twice, per day.
@itsfi I need to get back on that two a day train for the sheet masks....🙄
@itsfi Excellent! How do yoyvlike the new Makeup by Mario Lipstick? It looks like you are off to a great start. Congratulations on decluttering some items and great work on getting through your opened mascaras!
@Mellmars1185, these new Makeup by Mario lipsticks are wonderful! 😍 I picked up MAKEUP BY MARIO SuperSatin® Lipstick 917 and MAKEUP BY MARIO SuperSatin® Lipstick Bronx Baby and they have been real treats. No pulling when applying; no feathering or bleeding. I don't feel like I need a liner (though I'm supposed to be trying to use my liners more so I will get to that soon, or hopefully soon). I think you'd love the formula and there are so many pretty shades that would be stunning on you. I haven't gotten around to posting a haul of these two but will try to get to it (and swatches) this or next week.
@itsfi Those are both beautiful shades. I love how all of the names are New York names.
Right? It's such a beautiful homage to NY @Mellmars1185! I wonder if @danielledanielle knows about this line of lipsticks?
I do! @itsfi & @Mellmars1185 . I liked his homage to the Sephora he worked at, which I've enjoyed a few makeovers and classes there. BUT, I'm hating a little that the Bronx is a nude color, the Bronx is anything but neutral 🤣
@danielledanielle, if there was a Bronx 2.0 shade, what would be your suggestion for its shade? Inquiring minds want to know. 😉 @Mellmars1185
Bronx - a red-orange or a deep, deep brown
Manhattan - Bright Pink (magenta)
Queens - Pink
Staten Island - Beige Nude
Brooklyn - A Mauve
Those would be lovely additions. 😍 I’m all on board for a 2.0 Series - The @danielledanielle Edit.
Aww, thanks @itsfi . I'll just call Mario now and let him know 😂
@danielledanielle This sounds like an excellent collab! I would break my no/low buy for this! @itsfi
