What is a capsule makeup collection?
A capsule makeup collection is a selection of makeup products that can be used to put together different looks for a variety of occasions. For some of us, that may mean a group of essential products for your everyday look plus a few extra items for a more glam or dramatic look; and, for others of us, that may mean, a lineup of our holy grail product(s) in each makeup category. My ideal capsule makeup collection probably falls somewhere in between - we'll (hopefully) find out at the end of the year! I don't see myself as a minimalist, but I don't have an extensive collection of makeup either. I appreciate the collections of people who fall within both camps but I float somewhere in between - on the one hand, my brow product collection would earn a gold star if we were using a minimalist approach to makeup; my lip product lineup, on the other hand, would not. 🤣 It would most definitely not.
Why have a capsule makeup collection?
Everyone will have their own reasons for having (or not having) a more streamlined makeup collection. Over the years, I've just become more interested in having less beauty products on hand (well, except for lip products, lol) - a handful of items I use or reach for more frequently with maybe a few additional products that are go-to's for me for special events or occasions. Don't get me wrong, I love trying new products and I don't see that changing. I just like the idea of having a simpler collection (I appreciate that "simpler" can be relative), curated to my needs and lifestyle.
Why weekly?
A few years ago, beauty & lifestyle blogger Serein Wu, did a weekly series (on her blog and YouTube channel), Makeup Bag Monday, where she rotated her makeup bag each week with new product launches and makeup already in her collection. Every Monday, she shared the products she selected for the upcoming week and provided detailed makeup reviews on the makeup she used for the previous week. I may not post detailed reviews, but will at least try to include a weekly recap (probably at the end of the week) of what products I like and which ones didn't work for me. If weekly works for you, great. If not, feel free to join in based on what works best for you.
What if I don't have enough products to fit the theme for a full face?
No need for your entire makeup capsule to fit the weekly theme(s). Just one will do. And, even if you don't have one that fits squarely within a theme, feel free to post your makeup capsule. We'd love to see what you're using and hear your feedback on the products as you put them to use.
@itsfi Yes, i have the large tote. I will get back to you with the size. It is very large and it has a zipper. The bottoms have a flat base, which makes it even roomier!
“…which makes it even roomier.” Ohhh, that sounds great @Mellmars1185! I also love that the bottom flattens. 👍🏼
Week 42 - The "Makeup I'm Thankful For" Makeup Capsule
First, I want to wish our Canadian BIC beauties a very Happy Thanksgiving! Not gonna lie, I do hope to see some of your spreads on the What's on your plate? thread. 😍😋 Thankful for each of you and the ways you bring such joy and cheer to the BIC with your beauty, inside and out!
Just gonna say it, I had a lot of fun putting this week's capsule together. It took me a bit of time editing what to include and what to save for another week - I seem to want more and more options. 😂 Lately though, I've been making more of a conscious effort to go back and forth when it comes to the size of my capsules - having a more minimalist capsule one week and then, a more ... comprehensive 😚 one another week. It doesn't always go back and forth one and then the other, but it's been a good way to figure out what is a good size capsule I'm comfortable with.
THE "FITS":
A close-up shot of a few beauties from this week's capsule, highlighting Canadian beauty brands (or ones that started out in Canada). We've got a good mix here, with products from Ilia, Nudestix, some MAC, LYS Beauty and Cheekbone Beauty. <<patting myself on the back for streamlining my MAC choices, lol>>
The bag for this week is one of the best parts of this capsule. I have tried very hard this year (okay, maybe I could have tried harder some weeks) to not purchase any products (or accessories) specifically for the weekly capsules, but I couldn't resist picking up this bag - it's just too cute. And fits so well with this week's theme. It also fits all of the beauties in this week's capsule.
I'm excited to put these beauties to use this week. Here, we go!
Happy Thanksgiving I know this was a few weeks ago but such a beautiful sentiment, I love the beautiful statements you made about BIC and everyone’s enthusiastic, kind, supportive, and encouraging nature! Your capsules always bring such joy! Love how you organize them and I always learn so much about products and all things amazing! The fit is so beautiful! I could so relate to the RB blush being a dot I remember the first time I tried it. Very beautiful 🍁 @itsfi it’s a joy to watch everyone’s capsules come to life. I appreciate you starting such a wonderful thread 🙂
@peculiarzmakeup, completely agree, I’ve had such a blast seeing what’s in everyone’s capsules from week to week - some of us have more palettes, some have a more minimalist capsule while others have more variety.
@itsfi A bit late but thank you for the thanksgiving wishes! That bag is super cute!
I wasn’t aware Nudestix was Canadian! I learned a thing today!
It’s Canadian Thanksgiving all week long here @heartsmyface. I’m not Canadian but I’ve been celebrating it in honor of all the Canadian BIC beauties because … well, why wouldn’t I?! 😊
This bag is super fun! The material is great too. They need to make more bags like this. This challenge has given me lots to research and learn. 👍🏼
@itsfi Wow!!!!! I learned so many new things! I didn’t know all those brands started Canadian! I am impressed! I should have known this! MAC!!!! I am so surprised! And I love the throw back to Woodwinked is a huge throw back to my early days with makeup. Literally the only one I used. That bag is adorable!!! Perfect for this capsule!!! I will keep you posted on my thoughts on the Merit!!!
I am most thankful for great friends like you!!!
@ather Off the top of my head, the only Canadian brands I could think of were MAC and Bite and Bite diesnt even exist anymore! 🫣. Bad Canadian!
@heartsmyface I’m here a bad Canadian also!! Is it bad I assumed we didn’t have any??
@ather, Woodwinked is such a pretty color, with many ways to use it. I typically just do a quick wash of color, but I like that it is easily buildable.
@itsfi Wonderful capsule! I LOVE your bag! It is perfect for this wks theme and will come in handy for others! Thank you for the compliment about the MBM bronzer. I like it because it goes on very light but you can layer it and build it up if you want to. You chose two great mascaras. I have been using the YSL lately but I am missing my Tower 28. I should try mixing/layering them also!
This bag is so cute and fun @Mellmars1185! I feel like I now need one for every place I've visited - not that there are thaaat many places, but I feel like I may now start collecting something like this. 🤔
I feel like my collection of Makeup By Mario products is growing ... and growing ... which isn't bad because he has some great products but ...
@itsfi That would be a useful souvenir! I have been picking up keychains and shotglasses for my family on my recent trips. Have you been to Canada before?
I hear you on the growing collection. His new palette is gorgeous. I have also heard great things about the new MAKEUP BY MARIO SurrealSkin™ Talc-Free Soft Blur Setting Powder
@Mellmars1185, I visited Vancouver about 5 years ago. Stayed for a week. Loved it!! I'd go back to visit, and go to see other provinces while I'm there - Quebec, Toronto, Prince Edward Island, etc. It would be an extra long trip or multiple trips. We did a couple of guided tours, including one of Victoria Park.
His new palette looks really good - this is coming from someone who, with being so close with my project pan with the full size ND Biba palette, is being very selective about eye shadow palettes in general and eye shadow palettes with more than 5 shadows in it. 😂🤣😂 Oh, yes, I've heard raves about his loose powder - there have been a couple of reviews I've read that made me think of you - they said the loose powder rivals (or is better than) the original Givenchy Prisme Libre powder.
@itsfi I am retroactively sad you didn’t visit me. you’re not allowed to visit in the future without seeing me! Rules!
Now I’m sad I made you sad @heartsmyface 😔😥🥺🥺🥺 I will most definitely visit you when I’m next in BC because first and foremost, no trip would be complete without doing so!!
Ahhhh, rules!!! I do follow them … most of the time. 😉 This is one rule I’d gladly follow!!
@itsfi That sounds lovely. I would love to visit Vancouver one day!
Yes the MUBM powder launch has great timing!
The bag thou! That's swell! @itsfi ahhh I believe it @missjeanie herself that put Cicapair SPF's on my radar, especially the camo drops version, which is thinner than the one in the jar. I like both but really enjoy it most in the drops. Is that a little mini ghost pumpkin too? 👻 That's a cutie!
*Pause for applause* Wow! So many Canadian brands! Did this ever impress me to see so many homegrown brands in your capsule. I feel bad to say some of them I knew and others I didn't. 🙈 I mean I should have know about MAC, not many makeup brands have actual stores here but MAC does.
Awww, thanks @CynthieLu! It was fun looking into the Canadian brands. I knew MAC and Cheekbone. At one point I knew about Nudestix but forgot until doing some research for this week's capsule. I feel like I may have mixed up LYS Beauty for another brand - whoops. Ilia was a new one to me. I wish there were standalone MAC stores - the ones in the city have closed. 😞 The nearest one to me is about a 45 minute drive, no traffic. There was next door to the Sephora downtown - as you can probably imagine, that made for a dangerous shopping trip when it was there.
Yes, yes, a mini ghost pumpkin. I saw them at the grocery store last month and picked it up - I usually miss out on the mini pumpkins because they get picked up pretty quickly.
I need help with identifying the things and places on the bag. Here's what I think are meant by the images.
Not sure about Glacier National Park or Banff, Canada place or that last one - Roosevelt Cottage. At first I thought the last one had to do with a famous government building, like the Parliament buildings in Victoria, BC, but the style seemed a little off. Also, does Canada have a particularly large population of polar bears? Tagging @Mellmars1185 as she may also be able to help with the identification of these images.
@itsfi The dreamcatcher represents our indigenous populations of First Nations, Inuit and Métis who lived the land before Canada was colonized and the government committed cultural genocide. We have dark history. They now make up about 5% of the Canadian population.
Many of our cities were named by the indigenous people. The indigenous name for Coquitlam, British Columbia is kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (kwee-KWET-lum), which means "Red Fish Up the River" in the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ language.
Coquitlam River is right behind our house. It’s spawning season! Not my photo.
