What is a capsule makeup collection?
A capsule makeup collection is a selection of makeup products that can be used to put together different looks for a variety of occasions. For some of us, that may mean a group of essential products for your everyday look plus a few extra items for a more glam or dramatic look; and, for others of us, that may mean, a lineup of our holy grail product(s) in each makeup category. My ideal capsule makeup collection probably falls somewhere in between - we'll (hopefully) find out at the end of the year! I don't see myself as a minimalist, but I don't have an extensive collection of makeup either. I appreciate the collections of people who fall within both camps but I float somewhere in between - on the one hand, my brow product collection would earn a gold star if we were using a minimalist approach to makeup; my lip product lineup, on the other hand, would not. 🤣 It would most definitely not.
Why have a capsule makeup collection?
Everyone will have their own reasons for having (or not having) a more streamlined makeup collection. Over the years, I've just become more interested in having less beauty products on hand (well, except for lip products, lol) - a handful of items I use or reach for more frequently with maybe a few additional products that are go-to's for me for special events or occasions. Don't get me wrong, I love trying new products and I don't see that changing. I just like the idea of having a simpler collection (I appreciate that "simpler" can be relative), curated to my needs and lifestyle.
Why weekly?
A few years ago, beauty & lifestyle blogger Serein Wu, did a weekly series (on her blog and YouTube channel), Makeup Bag Monday, where she rotated her makeup bag each week with new product launches and makeup already in her collection. Every Monday, she shared the products she selected for the upcoming week and provided detailed makeup reviews on the makeup she used for the previous week. I may not post detailed reviews, but will at least try to include a weekly recap (probably at the end of the week) of what products I like and which ones didn't work for me. If weekly works for you, great. If not, feel free to join in based on what works best for you.
What if I don't have enough products to fit the theme for a full face?
No need for your entire makeup capsule to fit the weekly theme(s). Just one will do. And, even if you don't have one that fits squarely within a theme, feel free to post your makeup capsule. We'd love to see what you're using and hear your feedback on the products as you put them to use.
@cianni You look stunning in reds. After hearing about TF from you and @CynthieLu I am so intrigued. I regret picking up the mini set that was on sale at the end of the year. Maybe next year. Hopefully a mini becomes available in a set. I was hoping the Sephora Favorites set came back in stock with the TF mini. I loved reading all of your feedback.
@Mellmars1185 thank you! Ill definitely have to keep an eye out for the minis as well 👀 the only thing making me nervous about that is that minis are what originally got me into PMG lipsticks, and it only snowballed from there 😅
Sometimes the TF mini's are in the Rewards Bazaar too @Mellmars1185 😉 maybe you'll see one turn up 🤞🤞
@CynthieLu Ohhh good to know. I will keep an 👁 out 💄
Oh wow @cianni These are absolutely gorgeous on you! Now I think I'm running to check out Mac Powder Kiss Lippies, your HG lip you say? That's a really good recommendation. 😀
I feel you on TF, I wish I didn't love those as much as I do, they are definitely on the pricer side but so fabulous to wear, right? 🤩
@CynthieLu I definitely feel bougie when i put the TF on! Luckily it’s in a color I don’t wear often, so it’ll last me longer 😂 the powder kiss is really nice - it’s a matte formula that goes on almost mousse-like. It can be full coverage/opaque, but it really shines as a blotted lip type of look. It fades beautifully for that reason, so while the look may change throughout the day, it wont need retouching! Super comfortable to wear too!
Low maintenance lips are my all time fave @cianni 😜 Thank you for that breakdown. 🙏💖
I went and looked at the colors of these, I saw 3 right away that I was like oooooh over. 🙈
I’m so so late but I promise I’m catching up! My SO was away for work for a week, and I’ve fallen woefully behind!
My Lunar New Year/Valentines Capsule was a little different - I decided to do a week of reds. As someone who doesn’t do a red lip very often, for some reason I have more than I thought! I figured it would be the perfect week to see which ones are similar, and which can be taken out of my collection. I might do something similar in the fall with all my dark lipsticks and glosses that I don’t reach for very often, but have accumulated a ton of.
Here are what I used that week (detailed post to follow with thoughts). ETA - I ended up swapping out the Glossier lipgloss for the TOM FORD Lip Color Lipstick 16 Scarlet Rouge , which I didn’t swatch, and the Jaclyn liner is in the shade Comin In Hot
@cianni Aww sorry your SO was away. Sounds like you are catching up!
@ather luckily i had my mini me to keep me company!
@cianni My SO is always gone. I’m lucky to have my little man with me all the time to keep me busy!
@cianni I love your idea of doing all reds for this theme!
@Mellmars1185 thank you! I was debating doing pinks as well for valentines, but i had way too many that would have fallen under that category haha
Better late than never right? @cianni I definitely have been late on a few of these myself. I'm so glad you posted! 😀
I love your take on this theme, power house red week. ❣️ Your red lippie collection is sooo good. 😍
@CynthieLu thank you! It’s fun to play around with some shades that don’t normally get a ton of love in my collection 😊
@cianni, you’re not late. As I see it, many great get togethers have folks rolling in throughout! 😃 I LOVE the direction you took the prompt! ♥️♥️♥️ I don’t have many reds but love seeing them and learning about the different ones out there. What a gorgeous collection you have. Your swatches!!! Wow 😍 this reds capsule is beautiful. I have no doubt that you stunned in each and every one. 💄
@itsfi thank you! I had fun playing around with them, but i still think ill stick to my regular terracotta’s and nude shade for daily wear 🤗 it was nice to see what i have in my collection though!
Week 8 in Review - The "BIC Inspired" Makeup Capsule
Another early check in. No Top Shelf items this week, but many likes 👍🏼 among this capsule - and why wouldn't there be? They're BIC inspired. It was a bit of a stroll down memory lane putting this capsule together. And a sobering reminder that I have a lot of stuff. A lot. 😆 That needs to be used. Get to it, Fi!
THE STANDOUTS (but not necessarily Top Shelf products)
UNDECIDED 🤷🏻♀️
DECLUTTERED 🗑️
With the SC concealer, that makes 3 decluttered items this month from the capsule challenge, with one more week to go. For this coming week's capsule, I'm planning on doing a mix of best of products as well as items that I'm on the fence about, some based on items I've included in past capsule and some products that have just been hanging around the makeup stash for a while.
What about you? How'd you like your BIC Inspired makeup capsule this week?
@itsfi Ooo I remember loving the double wear foundation! I don’t think I’ve tried them in a long time! This capsule looks great! It’s too bad you had to declutter that concealer but they can’t last forever!! I bet that Chanel will look beautiful on you!
@ather, I’m a late comer when it comes to the EL Double Wear. I’ve tried samples before but I think my skin wasn’t ready for it back then. It really does last! 👍🏼
I was surprised by the concealer. Usually I can open one and use it and then set it aside only to come back to it again months later, and fine. This one, not so much. 🤷🏻♀️ Maybe that’s the way of things, with “cleaner” ingredients (ie less preservatives, etc). It’s fine, probably a good thing really - over a year is a long time to keep a concealer as I think about it - that’s beyond the typical shelf life for concealers.
Ahhh, Chanel. I do love so many things from their makeup line. I remember when select Sephora stores carried certain of their glossimer lip glosses. That made for dangerous in store visits. 💸💸 😆
