What is a capsule makeup collection?
A capsule makeup collection is a selection of makeup products that can be used to put together different looks for a variety of occasions. For some of us, that may mean a group of essential products for your everyday look plus a few extra items for a more glam or dramatic look; and, for others of us, that may mean, a lineup of our holy grail product(s) in each makeup category. My ideal capsule makeup collection probably falls somewhere in between - we'll (hopefully) find out at the end of the year! I don't see myself as a minimalist, but I don't have an extensive collection of makeup either. I appreciate the collections of people who fall within both camps but I float somewhere in between - on the one hand, my brow product collection would earn a gold star if we were using a minimalist approach to makeup; my lip product lineup, on the other hand, would not. 🤣 It would most definitely not.
Why have a capsule makeup collection?
Everyone will have their own reasons for having (or not having) a more streamlined makeup collection. Over the years, I've just become more interested in having less beauty products on hand (well, except for lip products, lol) - a handful of items I use or reach for more frequently with maybe a few additional products that are go-to's for me for special events or occasions. Don't get me wrong, I love trying new products and I don't see that changing. I just like the idea of having a simpler collection (I appreciate that "simpler" can be relative), curated to my needs and lifestyle.
Why weekly?
A few years ago, beauty & lifestyle blogger Serein Wu, did a weekly series (on her blog and YouTube channel), Makeup Bag Monday, where she rotated her makeup bag each week with new product launches and makeup already in her collection. Every Monday, she shared the products she selected for the upcoming week and provided detailed makeup reviews on the makeup she used for the previous week. I may not post detailed reviews, but will at least try to include a weekly recap (probably at the end of the week) of what products I like and which ones didn't work for me. If weekly works for you, great. If not, feel free to join in based on what works best for you.
What if I don't have enough products to fit the theme for a full face?
No need for your entire makeup capsule to fit the weekly theme(s). Just one will do. And, even if you don't have one that fits squarely within a theme, feel free to post your makeup capsule. We'd love to see what you're using and hear your feedback on the products as you put them to use.
Always love having you and seeing your capsules on this thread @caitbird, but completely understand that you're busy, and sometimes, a weekly capsule isn't how you decide what makeup you will wear. I tend to be a creature of habit and so the weekly bag of makeup is fine with me, with adjustments made along the way to address any events during the week or if I'm feeling like a different mix of products.
"recently the unused face products box has overflowed" - hahaha! I hear that. Some box or bin is usually at capacity or overflowing, it seems. We just have to keep chipping away at it.
@itsfi liking this selection of products! It’s always nice to have an easy rotation for vacation looks. Interesting about the UD foundation. I haven’t had the opportunity to try it, but i like the idea that it self-sets. As much as i love setting powders to really seal in a look, i admit that i avoid most foundations in the summer so that I don’t have to apply any more powder than i have to.
@cianni, the self setting and long wearing feature of the Urban Decay foundation is what drew me to it. It lives up to its claims too - I put it to a test, wearing it to a spa day (I don’t typically wear makeup when I’m at the spa) but it lasted through sauna, steam room, whirlpool & a massage, with little of it wearing off or wearing down. 🤯
I like to keep my makeup light in the summer and for the most part, with foundations, I just use it along my cheeks to even tone and this one has been great because I don’t feel like I need to use a setting powder over it. I wish / hope they come out with a corresponding concealer. 🤞🏼 It’s fairly cool still here so I’ll definitely be reaching for this one to see how it performs when temps get really warm.
@itsfi a lip smackdown, how fun! I love that the lippies you chose are mostly similar shades/color ranges, just different formulas, finishes, etc. I wonder if I have that many different lippies in a similar color story in my collection...probably 😅 Look at all those declutters, woohoo! Great job! Thanks for sharing your thoughts and feedback on everything as always!
This was a lot of fun @caitbird! It definitely helped having them in the same or similar color families. I thought I'd try red lippies this week and was off to a good start (even though I pulled out way more reds than I could have fit into a week) but recently my lips became very, very chapped - I forgot to carry chapstick with me and my lips got windburned and I've been in repair mode for a couple of days.
Ooooh, take a look at your stash; you might be surprised how my similar lip shades you have - a great set up for a lip smackdown! It also makes it easier to destash product - with the same color or shade, it's more like comparing apples to apples.
@itsfi ughhhhh this is so fun!! A different lippie every day sounds like a great week to me! The Huda was a mini, so you get a pass on not being able to find the colour right away! I’m with you on it being a little too finicky to justify keeping - mine is almost done so i need to finish it, but i can’t see myself picking up another one. It’s pretty, but with so many choices, it’s hard to justify keeping one that’s so high maintenance! That’s a shame about the shades that looked differently on; I hate when that happens! Looks like you’ve got a lot of nice shades and formulas that made it through though!!
@cianni, it was so much fun, more so than I thought it would be. I’ll plan to do it again another time. Helpful too with moving some items out of my stash.
Yeah, I have to remember that pink / blush shades can look differently on my lips. Similar to how older formulations of reds sometimes can pull fuchsia on my lips. I can do the apply concealer and blot primer hack but sometimes the extra effort isn’t worth it, particularly if I have other lippies that give me a similar look/shade.
@itsfi Omg I love this. smack down. Yesss! I’m here for it! And multiple lippies in one day what!!! How fun is this!! I am so impressed with your decluttering. Wow! 🤯
These throwdowns / smackdowns that I've been doing recently have been inspired in part by you @ather, thank you! This seems like it will be a good way to move me towards decluttering lip products. Putting a few items head-to-head in a battle really does bring to the forefront the pros and cons of a product, particularly vis-a-vis another similar product. I don't know if I'll always be able to declutter a lip product, but it makes trying to do so more fun!
I have a long ways to go before my makeup collection is where I feel like I'd like it to be, but we'll get there, slowly, but surely. Or, at least I hope so. 🤞
@itsfi Awww you will get your collection where you need it!! And these throw downs are so fun to read!!!
Seeing as I’ve panned some products from my project recently, I’m keeping the momentum going by using that prompt as my capsule for this week. Most are from my official project, and a few are just oldies that could use some attention.
from my official project:
unofficial pan project add-ons:
@cianni love your pan it challenge capsule; I need to try doing this! I definitely want to try to work in my pan it items/goals more. I love your idea to repurpose the UD Space Powder as an eyeshadow!
@cianni, I love that you’re using items that are part of the pan it! challenge and products you want to use up. Ahhh, Benefit Hoola - that’s an oldie but goodie for me. After you use up your mini, do you think you’ll repurchase it? Or are there other bronzers you like more?
@itsfiim not going to repurchase Hoola I don’t think. The shade doesn’t really work for me as a true bronzer, and I don’t use bronzer often. I’ve been really enjoying my PATRICK TA Major Sculpt Crème Contour & Powder Bronzer Duo She's Sculpted when I do use bronzer! I’ve been using the Hoola mainly as an all over eye shade or base lately!
@itsfi We match! I have a tarte Maracuja Juicy Lip Plump Gloss in my capsule this week as well. I love a capsule full of lip options!
what shade is the Huda lip contour? I have a mini in Warm Brown I believe, and I take it traveling because it tends to pair really well with most of the lip options I bring with me. It is a super creamy formula though, and sometimes I regret not bringing something slightly drier with more staying power. I’m interested to see how it fares for you this week!
Yaaaay, we’re twinning it with the Tarte lip oil @cianni 🙌🏼 Lip options are a must! 👄 I know that lippies will be hard to declutter but I also know I have to start somewhere and sometime. So we shall see how this week goes.
That’s it, cianni - the Huda lip contour is super soft, more so than I prefer, I am realizing. A chunk has broken off, a couple of times not actually. 😞 That’s a good question - I can’t find the shade name on this pencil; it was part of a set of some sort though I can’t recall whether it was a Huda set from a holiday offering or a set with a mix of lip products. It’s a pinky beige shade.
I have a challenging time getting it to sharpen. I initially thought it was the sharpener but I think it may be due to the softness of the product now. I have products with a similar sharpener and they work fine but I cannot seem to get this one to get a sharp point. 🤷🏻♀️ It’s looking more and more like this could be the last week for the Huda lip contour.
@itsfi i picked mine up in a set too, so it’s probably the same one I have! I agree with the difficulty sharpening it. For a product labeled a contour, it’s not easy to get a chiseled line! It does look nice as an all over color/blotted lip with some gloss on top if it’s not working for you as a liner! I picked up some ONE/SIZE by Patrick Starrr Lip Snatcher Waterproof Precision Lip Liner on sale, and the consistency of those is what I wish the Huda was. It’s still somewhat creamy but drier/more of a traditional lip pencil
@cianni, I saw the sale on the ONE/SIZE lip duo and lipliner for National Lipstick Day and was tempted - I remembered your feedback on them, but held off on picking up anything.
I took your suggestion and used the Huda lip contour today to line and fill my lips, topping it with a lip balm. It was pretty and I’m torn over whether to keep it. I’ll keep playing with it this week.
