Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge 2024

Hello, BIC Beauties! If the idea of makeup capsules piques your curiosity, or you're interested in seeing what's in the beauty collection or weekly makeup bag of your fellow BIC beauties, jump right on in - with questions, comments or a capsule of your own to share.

0 - 8.18 edit capsule post 4.jpg
To add a fun take on putting together a makeup capsule, I've included theme(s) for the weekly capsule - some weeks, I have enough products in my stash (eek!) to make a whole capsule based on the prompt; other weeks, I have just one or two items that fit neatly within theme.

Whether you find yourself in the same place or somewhere in between, jump right on it and share your weekly makeup capsule. Check out the FAQ section below ⤵️ for more info on this challenge.

CURRENT MAKEUP CAPSULE THEME:

Week 52 (December 23 - December 29) - The Holiday Glam Makeup Capsule and/or  The "2024 Makeup Capsule Collection" Makeup Capsule - Some options for us to close out the makeup capsules for 2024 (or to kick start 2025)!

Show us the beauties you use when you want to add glitz and glam (or, that up the glitz and glam element) to your makeup look.

and/or

Curate a bag with your go-to, GOAT, ride-or-die products that would make up your ultimate makeup capsule collection (for 2024). If it's too much to put together a creme de la creme capsule or if you're at your best with options, consider putting together a makeup capsules of one or more favorites you discovered (or re-discovered) in 2024.

What is a capsule makeup collection?

A capsule makeup collection is a selection of makeup products that can be used to put together different looks for a variety of occasions. For some of us, that may mean a group of essential products for your everyday look plus a few extra items for a more glam or dramatic look; and, for others of us, that may mean, a lineup of our holy grail product(s) in each makeup category. My ideal capsule makeup collection probably falls somewhere in between - we'll (hopefully) find out at the end of the year! I don't see myself as a minimalist, but I don't have an extensive collection of makeup either. I appreciate the collections of people who fall within both camps but I float somewhere in between - on the one hand, my brow product collection would earn a gold star if we were using a minimalist approach to makeup; my lip product lineup, on the other hand, would not. 🤣 It would most definitely not.

Why have a capsule makeup collection?

Everyone will have their own reasons for having (or not having) a more streamlined makeup collection. Over the years, I've just become more interested in having less beauty products on hand (well, except for lip products, lol) - a handful of items I use or reach for more frequently with maybe a few additional products that are go-to's for me for special events or occasions.  Don't get me wrong, I love trying new products and I don't see that changing. I just like the idea of having a simpler collection (I appreciate that "simpler" can be relative), curated to my needs and lifestyle.

Why weekly?
A few years ago, beauty & lifestyle blogger Serein Wu, did a weekly series (on her blog and YouTube channel), Makeup Bag Monday, where she rotated her makeup bag each week with new product launches and makeup already in her collection. Every Monday, she shared the products she selected for the upcoming week and provided detailed makeup reviews on the makeup she used for the previous week. I may not post detailed reviews, but will at least try to include a weekly recap (probably at the end of the week) of what products I like and which ones didn't work for me.  If weekly works for you, great. If not, feel free to join in based on what works best for you.

What if I don't have enough products to fit the theme for a full face?

No need for your entire makeup capsule to fit the weekly theme(s). Just one will do. And, even if you don't have one that fits squarely within a theme, feel free to post your makeup capsule. We'd love to see what you're using and hear your feedback on the products as you put them to use.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@danielledanielle Thank you! I am loving quad eyeshadows lately. There is less to choose from, so it makes creating an eye look much less easily. I like your thinking 💄!!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@ather Lovely picks. I am curious about the Lawless brow wax and the Saie highlighter.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@Mellmars1185  the highlighter is amazing! It’s a cream and a little goes a long way. I use to put it on my eyes but I’m. It so sensitive that I can’t put much on my eyes. It’s a light pink colour and blends like a dream. I’m not sure you can buy it now tho. I think it was replaced with Saie Glow Sculpt Multi-Use Cream Highlighting Blush  i like the lawless brow wax because it isn’t adding to much colour but enough to make me feel put together. I don’t know if the hold is as much as I like. I would like a little more hold but it could also be my technique. I appreciate the coloured wax since I find the clear ones always look like my brows have dandruff 😝

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@ather I hear you on the clear brow product situation. The same thing happens to me 😆

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Oh, that Saie highlighter looks so good @ather😍 Tell me about the Lawless brow wax. That is probably the leanest product category in my stash - I have maybe 3 brow gel products, 1 currently open and in frequent use, er, when I remember to take the time to attend to my brow. 😄

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi  It is! But I think Saie replaced it with the new one that was launched. Saie Glow Sculpt Multi-Use Cream Highlighting Blush   I don’t see it on my Sephora website! I have been trying to use up my Kosas eyebrow gel and I forgot how much I like the lawless! I normally reach for a clear gel but I love how the colour really makes them look more full! I’ll be reaching for this one more!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Week 9 - I haven't been motivated as of late but I want to get back into this challenge. For week 9, I found myself grabbing for favourites since I did not set aside anything for a capsule. The favourites included:

Armani Beauty Luminous Silk Natural Glow Foundation 3.5

Givenchy Prisme Libre Loose Setting and Finishing Powder 3 Voile Rosé

Hourglass Unlocked Instant Extensions Lengthening Mascara   - This one I have been either having really good lash days or really bad. I am still on the fence about this one (even though I included it in my favourites).

Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez Soft Pinch Liquid Blush Virtue

Tower 28 Beauty Swipe All-Over Hydrating Serum Concealer 5.0 EP

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Ahhhh, I spy a GOAT 🐐 - Armani LSF is one I always want to have in my collection. ❣️❣️ The Kosas concealer is a beauty; it's probably one of my favorites at the moment - though I'm trying to be good about giving all the ones I've picked up a good, solid go.

Ugh, I feel ya on the Hourglass. How many coats are you applying? I'm finding that if I go for 3 or more coats, I have to be extra, extra mindful of how much and when I apply those additional layers if I want any chance at a good lash day!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

I’m having some issues accessing the BIC from anywhere other than my mobile app, which has reduced my ability to reply on posts but I see them and I’m trying to troubleshoot!

here are my thoughts from what else I used from the chopping block capsule! I used the NYX lip liner in Cocoa, IT Cosmetics Pillow Lips Collagen-Infused Lipstick  (Vision), Urban Decay Vice Lip Chemistry Lip Stain - Wired Collection Gravity  (mine is in the shade Heavy), Flower Beauty eye liner in Emerald, Lise Watier Portfolio Professional Correctors  and forgot to take a photo but the Ordinary Hylamide Photography Foundation. Thoughts in the spoiler!

Spoiler
Passed the Test - Lise Watier Color Corrector, Flower Beauty Eyeliner, NYX lip liner in Cocoa.

For the Lise Watier (I believe @CynthieLu you asked about it in a reply I can’t respond to on the mobile app) I used the lavender, green and bronzer shade so I could officially try them all. The bronze shade actually is a really nice bronzer/contour shade for me, so that worked out nicely. The green and lavender shades went on a little too white at first. The lavender did blend in with the ivory and beige shades beautifully to give good coverage and worked well. The green was a little pasty On me but did the job. I don’t have too much spot redness that I’d use this for, I love my Dr. Jart+ Cicapair ™ Tiger Grass Camo Drops Color Corrector SPF 35 1 oz/ 30 mL  to neutralize any all over redness I experience. I think this is a great product to travel with, especially because the ivory shade worked really well as an eyelid primer too.

the eyeliner and lip liner were pretty standard; creamy, didn’t fade and didn’t bleed. The eyeliner was a little less green (it was just really dark) on my waterline, but it made for a nice liner without being as harsh as a black pencil. It also didn’t give any raccoon eyes! The NYX liner also stayed on really well throughout the day, lasting longer than the lipstick for sure!

Safe (for Now) - The Ordinary Hylamide Photography Foundation, UD Vice Lip Chemistry, IT Pillow Lips Cream Lipstick

the ordinary product I initially stated was a primer because it’s white/applies translucent. But when I went to use it, I realized that it’s labeled as a foundation. It kind of reminds me of that Becca Zero Pigment Foundation in the sense that it’s basically just a primer… 😂 I used it on its own on top of skincare. It made my skin really soft and had a slightly blurred effect. It’s safe for now, but I need to wear it more to see if I actually have a need for something like this in my collection.

the UD lip chemistry is a beautiful gloss, but it’s only “safe” for now because I don’t like it on its own. It applies very gray/cool toned on my bare lips (I guess that’s the chemistry part, because it doesn’t swatch that way). It’s nice to make peachier or way too warm lipsticks work for me, but again, need to decide if I need a product that I only like layered.

the IT cosmetics is fine. It’s a standard cream lipstick. The color is a little peachy on me and I absolutely have to wear it with a lipliner otherwise it gives peachy concealer lip. I’ll try it again with a better liner pairing, but otherwise I’ll be passing this onto my mom, who has a completely different undertone than I have

Got the Chop - no chops from this selection, but I’ll be playing with the safe products to see if they’re worth keeping!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@cianni, I'm going to have to try using the Dr. Jart as an eyeshadow primer - that sounds like a fabulous way to get multiple uses out of the drops. Thank you for sharing that; I wouldn't have thought to do that.

You are in good company with the log in issues. There seems to be a lot of different log in obstacles, but the good news is that they're being looked into. It's interesting that the app is making the Community threads more accessible for me - I think this is the first time that's ever happened. I have found that for logging in through my laptop that it seems to let me do so (through any browser) if I restart my computer before logging on.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@cianni I feel your pain with being able to log in. I haven't been able to log in with my phone at all. I was having trouble on my computer browser as well. I had to clear my cache and then sign out manually. Today it kicked me out just as I submitted a long post 🙄 idk what's going on. Great capsule picks!

Spoiler
Going with concealer as concealer and foundation this week and I've noticed a couple of products missing from these photos.

🌻PRIMER (FACE) - Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez Mini Pore Diffusing Primer- Always An Optimist Collection 0.50 oz./15 mL  or Victoria Beckham Beauty Priming Moisturizer Golden (not pictured) an international connection, it being a UK-based brand.

🌹FOUNDATION / CONCEALER - HAUS LABS BY LADY GAGA Triclone Skin Tech Hydrating + De-puffing Concealer with Fermented Arnica  or  Fenty Beauty by Rihanna We're Even Hydrating Longwear Waterproof Concealer  (I've only used this on my under eyes, so I'm interested to see how it performs as a foundation).

💮CHEEKS - Pat McGrath Labs Divine Blush + Bronze + Glow Trio: Fleurever Nude, another UK beauty brand

🏵SETTING POWDER - Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Finish Refillable Setting Powder , another UK beauty brand

Eyes:

Spoiler
👁PRIMER (EYES) - PAT McGRATH LABS IntensifEYES™ Longwear Eyeshadow Primer IntensifEYES™ Longwear Primary

👁EYESHADOW - Besame Ella Fitzgerald Eyeshadow Quad - loooooong ago, when I first started getting into makeup, I was often matched to / recommended mauve & purple eyeshadows and, at some point, grew tired of that and took a subconscious (?) hiatus from that color family as far as eyeshadows went. In the past couple of years though, I've come back around to them, but have been pretty selective about which palettes I actually purchased. The shades here are lovely.

👁 EYELINER - Danessa Myricks Beauty Linework Paintbrush Fluid Liquid Eyeliner 0.034 oz / 1 ml

👁 MASCARA - Hourglass Unlocked Instant Extensions Lengthening Mascara  (I'm committed to try to get the timing right between layers!!) or Ere Perez Natural Almond Mascara - Black - the Charlotte Tilbury mascara was decluttered and my Top Shelf 🐐 mascara, Lancome Monsieur Big Waterproof has gone the "empties" route - I had a lot longer than the recommended shelf life. Whoops.

👁 BROWS - Glossier Boy Brow Volumizing Eyebrow Gel-Pomade

Lips:

10 - Woman’s Brands 4.jpg

Spoiler
💄PRIMER (LIP) - I'll use the lightest shade in the Westman Atelier Lip Suede Lipstick Palette Les Nudes  (not pictured) as a primer. It's one of the products in my Pan It! challenge this year and I'm close to fully panning that shade.

💋 LIP LINER - Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat Lip Liner Love Trap  or Dominique Cosmetics Creamy Fill & Define Lip Liner (from a holiday set) - it's described as a mauve pink nude and I'm wondering if it's the same as the shade: Crush from her regular collection?

💄 LIPSTICK -
-- The Lip Bar Soft Kiss Nourishing Lipstick - Bare Me
-- HAUS LABS BY LADY GAGA Le Monster Lip Crayon Vegan Lipstick and Lip Liner Mauve Matte  (enabled by @Loretta55
-- Charlotte Tilbury K.I.S.S.I.N.G Satin Shine Lipstick 90's Pink  (mini, from promo gwp)
-- Cheekbone Beauty Sustain Lipstick - Ashink

💋 LIP GLOSS -  MILK MAKEUP Odyssey Hydrating Non-Sticky Lip Oil Gloss Werk Trip  - this seems light and I wonder if it will show up on my lips. That said, it may make the travel squad for my next work trip, just for the name alone! 😉

About the Brand: Cheekbone Beauty:

Spoiler
Cheekbone Beauty is an Indigenous-owned and founded, Canadian cosmetics company. Its founder, Jenn Harper was the recipient of the 2020 Canadian Women Entrepreneur Awards Ones To Watch Award. Cheekbone Beauty started out as a direct-to-consumer brand (but I thought I saw somewhere that it is available at Sephora Canada? Help me out Canadian beauties, is that accurate? Or no?). The Sustain lipstick line was the first products launched by the brand, in 2020, and was inspired by her Anishinaabe roots. The brand prides itself on its sustainability and high quality color cosmetics. All products from the brand are clean, vegan and cruelty free.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Hey @itsfi  Cheekbone Beauty SUSTAIN Lipstick ASKÎHK  is available in Sephora Canada online & select stores. Thanks for bringing it back to my radar, I'll have to see if any of their products will suit me.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

That’s awesome @Nahnom! Great to hear they are in Sephora Canada. I have a few of their lipsticks. They are very richly pigmented. The Askihk is a little too bold for me, but the other two shades I have are fab!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Wonderful collection for the week @itsfi !

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Thank you @makeitup305! I'm trying to work my way through my stash and reach for products I might not normally go for. I tend to be a creature of habit and have a handful of ones that I stick with, with my lip products being the things that change the most. It's been good to see what else I have. This has sorta helped to curb my beauty spend too. I still have a list of things I want to pick up and try but I'm less inclined to run out immediately to pick it up. Well, most of the time. 😅

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi I feel the same. Keeping track of the palettes I’ve been using has kept me wanting to reach for different things each time or picking different shades. Setting products aside for consistent use has also helped me determine whether I want them in my collection or not. I think what happens is that I buy too much at once (already having a lot) and then I don’t use them enough to determine whether or not I really like them.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@makeitup305, that sounds all too familiar! I'm really aiming this year to use what I have and when it's something I've recently purchased, to put it to use not too long after picking it up - and certainly not years after doing so. Eek! Do you have a particular way of choosing what palettes or products you work on?

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi not really. I tend to notice forgotten products when I reorganize and go “oh wow I forgot I had that” or “that product is so good, i haven’t used that in forever!” lol I actually used to have brands in a wheel randomizer on my phone and would spin to decide on a palette.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@makeitup305, those random selections sometimes work out so well. I went for a random pick for the 'one brand' portion of this week's capsule prompt, and while we're only at the start of Day 2, I've been enjoying a full face of Merit. And, to your point, there was, at least one, "oh, wow, I forgot I had that" moment. At least one. 😂
