Mask of the Week Challenge!

Hello Lovelies! As we make our resolutions and check them twice, I thought we could start a skincare version of the Weekly Challenge. Many of us wanted to use more masks, shop our stash and focus on our Skin so hopefully this thread will be an inspiration to do just that. Join us with pictures and comments down below.

Masking Spreadsheet Info

Spoiler

Hello every, @eshoe and I are very happy to present the BIC Masking Challenge Spreadsheet. The idea is to have an easily searchable database of masks and reviews as a reference point when we are considering our next purchase. Data integrity was important to us so instead of everyone inputing data directly into the spreadsheet where theoretically information could be deleted or edited we have the questionnaire. It should take no longer then 1-2 minutes with the option for a more detailed review (which you can copy from your post on this thread).

Remember the idea is not to replace this thread. I personally love reading, commenting and interacting with all you amazing women here and that shouldn’t change. This would just be on top of that. Hopefully the more people that partake in this, the larger database of information we’ll have for reference. It will be extra effort in the beginning but then we would only need to input any new mask we’ve tried.

Additional Info:

Since we aren’t allowed to post links, please PM or myself for it. You will also find this information on the original post so you don’t need a database to search for this post!

Incase you need some help to filter/search results, try this :-

Search Specific Word or Phrase —> Edit -> Find and Replace -> Search Word

Filter/Organize by Columns --> Data -> Create a Filter -> Select Options

There are 2 ways to edit a response:

1) Once you have completed a survey, click on the "Edit Your Response" link on that page. Once this page is closed, the only way to make a change is to:

2) PM @Aaliaa or @eshoe to make the change directly in the response spreadsheet

Thanks @eshoe for putting this together!

Merry Masking!

Re: Mask of the Week Challenge!

My evening last night consisted of Babyfacial-ing (old standby) while taking a bath, and I followed it up with the Sephora Coconut face sheet mask. I usually follow the DE up with the Origins Hello Calm mask, but switched it up for the letter C this week. I think I really like the Sephora mask; it feels mosturizing and the coconut scent is just enough to be relaxing, but not overwhelming. I left it on for about 20 minutes and there was just a bit of serum left to pat in to my skin. I also had the Redkin pH bonder in as a hair mask, but forgot to take a picture of that. IMG_20190117_001737.jpg

Re: Mask of the Week Challenge!

Last night I went with a new and and an old. I skipped yesterday morning to give my skin a break and let the redness recover, luckily I had nothing on the agenda yesterday so I could take it easy with a heavy cream and oil. My skin was much more itself at the end of the day.

  • Too Cool for School Coconut Ceramide Hydrating mask: I store mine flat, so serum was well distributed. It had a generous amount in the package, but I don't think enough for a blank sheet. The coconut scent is faint and soft, not of interest to my scent sensitive nose. The sheet fit well, I love when there's a larger upper lip strip because the small ones always twist together. I left on about 30 minutes and it started to dry around the mouth. After patting in the extra essence it was the slightest bit tacky but 20 minutes later when I went to do my nightly routine it was not. My skin looked good after. I would give this an A overall, but I want to do better at cleaning up my ingredients list and this has PEGS so I likely won't repurchase this.
  • Tony Moly Changing U magic foot peeling shoes: Use. Love. Repeat! I need these most in the winter but my feet are SO COLD while wearing them that I don't want to. The struggle. They fit in side my slippers so no excuses. They smell chemically up close but not noticeable wearing. This pair didn't come open, I had to cut them.. Odd. Also has PGs and PEGS. I don't use them frequently enough to cut them out, but will probably shop around for a cleaner solution.. Maybe use that clarisonic smart profile foot brush more often to extend time between uses.

side note on glycols

Spoiler
PGs (propylene glycol ) and PEGS (polyethylene glycol)- "ene" glycols are linked to cancer, neurotoxicity, mental health issues, reproductive issues, and hormone disruption. I feel like some of it is everywhere and it's hard to cut completely, but I want to do what I can to limit exposure in easy places to do so!

Re: Mask of the Week Challenge!

@CC3616 thank you so much for including your notes on PEGs and propylene glycol. At one point I did my best to cut all PEGs out and it is a real challenge; they are everywhere. I appreciate this info!

Re: Mask of the Week Challenge!

Week 3 - Jan 14 - 20 - Letter C or Favorite Mask in Regular Routine

Wednesday morning

IMG_4017.JPG"C" is for cucumber

Spoiler
Yesterday morning’s masking was cucumber themed.  Cucumber provides some great skincare benefits – it’s mainly water so it’s hydrating; it’s also made up of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) and caffeic acid (an antioxidant), which are both known to soothe skin, reduce swelling and puffy eyes, and prevent water retention.  I layered the Sephora Collection Cucumber Eye Mask underneath the 100% Pure Deep Hydration Sheet Mask.

Sephora Collection Cucumber Eye Mask
Spoiler
The Sephora Collection Cucumber Eye Mask contains a pair of biocellulose under eye patches; upon opening the packet, you’re greeted by the fresh scent of cucumber. The two patches are separated by three mesh-like backing. They eye masks are pretty easy to apply and adhere pretty well. Directions suggest keeping them on or 15 minutes, but I had them on for at least 20. I’ve used this eye mask before and find that it does what it says and depuffs and they’re nice to have on hand in the morning.  I probably wouldn’t repurchase too many of these eye masks, but that’s only because I have a container of 60 pairs of eye gel patches that I need to go through.  The handful I do keep on hand are for when I travel; it’s very convenient and useful to have these single use packets with me for traveling. I’d give the cucumber eye mask an "A-".
100% Pure Deep hydration Sheet Mask
Spoiler
100% Pure is a natural beauty company; it’s cruelty free and vegan too.  The back side of the 100% Pure Deep Hydration Sheet Mask says it’s “Natural, Vegan, Cruelty Free, Gluten Free, Non-Toxic.  Given the brand’s name and claims, I immediately went to look at the ingredients list (see spoiler below) and … whoa! WOW!! So many great ingredients! LOVE it! Aloe juice, sodium hyaluronate (a form of hyaluronic acid), vegetable glycerin, cucumber extract and ginseng root extract are the first 5 ingredients!  No seriously, do check out the spoiler for the ingredients list – it’s pretty amazing!
Spoiler
IMG_4019.JPG
It’s a cotton sheet, slightly on the thicker side as far as sheet masks go, but adheres well and stays in place. It’s an inch too long at the chin area and about 1/4” too wide on both sides  for me, but neither of those are deal breakers for me as far as sheet masks go. I had to make the most minimal adjustments – surprisingly, just to the inner corner of the eye area to adjust for the fit at the bridge.  When I first opened the pouch, I was expecting and hoping for a cucumber scent, but that was not the case, unfortunately. The fragrance isn’t bad but it’s not cucumber. I thought it smelled slightly of ginseng. I almost second guessed myself on that but went to the ingredients list and there it was – ginseng root extract. So that explains the scent; it fades fairly quickly after the mask is applied. I left it on for the recommended 20 minutes and after removing the sheet mask and patting in the remaining essence, there was no tacky feeling and my skin felt cool, bouncy and hydrated.  With results like that from a local, natural, cruelty-free and vegan beauty company, with an amazingly clean ingredients list, it easily earns an "A" from me.  I have a couple of other masks from this brand and they’ll be making an appearance during next week’s Clean Week challenge.

Wednesday evening

IMG_3990.JPGOil masks like this one and the Laneige lip mask are regulars in my winter routine

Spoiler

I decided to use an oil mask last night and reached for the make p:rem Blending me. Nourishing Oil Mask – make p:rem has 2 oil masks – this one and a moisturizing one that comes in a blue pouch. I’ve used both and interestingly, I find this Nourishing Oil Mask to be more moisturizing for me than the one more specifically geared towards moisturizing.  It seems that the oils in this mask just work better or me.

Since my skin is dehydrated-dry in the winter, oil masks like this one can be wonderful; it would be too much for me the other times of the year when my skin is dehydrated-combination.  The make p:Rem Nourishing Oil Mask contains … wait for it … 10 facial oils, along with shea butter, hyaluronic acid and glycerin, so it’s packed with several ingredients geared at hydrating and moisturizing the skin. The sheet mask is soft and feels like your standard sheet mask as far as thickness goes and has a light yellow-ish tint to it, which I guess is from the oils. Fit is standard and I just make a few adjustments to tailor it to the contours of my face and personal preferences.  There’s a subtle fragrance to this mask, owing I assume, to fragrance being included in the list of ingredients, albeit the last ingredient listed.   I only picked up on the scent when I opened the pack and pulled out the sheet mask; it disappears or is undetectable one the mask in on.

The essence has a watery/liquid-y oil consistency to it and there’s a lot of it in the packet, so much that I could apply it all over and still have enough to apply another layer of the essence to the mask during the time I had it on. There’s definitely enough extra essence that you could use a blank sheet mask pellet.

The directions would have you keep the mask on for 10 minutes. I generally follow the recommended time, maybe keeping the mask on for an additional 10-15 minutes, but with this one, I kept it on for a total of 45 minutes because, well, because there was enough essence in this mask that I could do so without the mask even feeling remotely like it was drying out or about to dry out – there’s a lot of essence to this mask. My skin felt soft, bouncy and very hydrated and moisturized after I removed the mask.  It also looked fresh and dewy.  An “A” mask for me.

Re: Mask of the Week Challenge!

I didn’t realize there is a blue and white version of the p:rem mask, @itsfi. I’m pretty certain you’ve sent both my way (most recently the blue)! I do like the oil masks, the serum usually reminds me of the very thin DE Marula.

I am going to check out the 100% pure brand, love a short list for ingredients like you mentioned!

Re: Mask of the Week Challenge!

@itsfi I haven't used an oil mask before, sounds like a good winter solution. Thanks Smiley Happy

Re: Mask of the Week Challenge!

Oil masks are really nice in the cold winter months @CC3616! The make p:rem ones can be found at target(dot)com or on Glow Recipe's site. Leaders also makes oil masks, as does Holicka Holicka. BOSCIA - Tsubaki Oil Deep Hydrating Bio-Cellulose Maskis another one and it's part of the Weekly Wow; since the Boscia one has a bio-cellulose mask your skin is less likely to have a layer of oil essence after removing the mask. I like the boscia and will pick up a couple during the sale, but for me, I like the cotton sheet in the winter.

RE: Mask of the Week Challenge!

One of my New Years Resolutions is to actually go through some of the beauty products I’ve collected over the past few years (which I feel like could be a thread on its own. Honestly I might start it lol), which includes makeup AND skincare. I’ve been really good about masking and even using my eye patches!! Tonight I used the Drunk Elephant Baby Facial mask and Peter Thomas Roth Cucumber Undereye Patches. I feel great!!

Re: RE: Mask of the Week Challenge!

Thank you for the tag @itsfiSmiley Happy @illianamarie, seeing my weekly sheet mask empties is so helpful for me and makes me think about them a second time. The empties thread is SO much fun, as is the Pan It Challenge both @itsfi and @CC3616 mentioned. Helps me to stay focused on what I have, which creates contentment. However you do it, wishing you the best😊

Re: RE: Mask of the Week Challenge!

@illianamarie Great choices! I think it's safe to say Baby facial is a community staple. Definitely join us for the pan it challenge that @itsfi recommended and post your empties, it makes using what you have on hand fun and motivating!

Drunk Elephant Babyfacial is amazing! I know there are some fans of those PTR cucumber eye patches on this thread too! Sounds like a great masking duo!

Using products you already have is a great resolution @illianamarie!  A few of us here are working on that as well this year. I think there are a couple of threads that you might be interested in checking out. Tagging @eshoe and @scott1201 - they post regularly to a couple of these threads.

Mask of the Week Challenge!

For another letter C mask, I went with what the lovely @lmaster recently gifted me last night, the Clean & Clear night relaxing mask. The jelly consistency was refreshing & it had a pleasant, relaxing smell. I actually think I fell asleep with this on😋 so I left it on a good 45 min before removing. It was pretty dried out but was easy to remove even in that state! It did a good job at making my upper face soft & plump when I woke up this morning. It's a solid "A" mask. Thank you @lmaster for sharing this mask with me!

Re: Mask of the Week Challenge!

The packaging is so soothing on this one, @sonnydee! Very nice of @lmaster to send some masking goodness your way😊👍🏼

C is for Chamomile. I LOVE this scent. I also love these masks. A+ I also included the Bite mask that is a regular in my routine. It is also a A+ for me.

Re: Mask of the Week Challenge!

Ohhh I have the unscented ones like that coming! I can't wait!!!! @emaisgr8

Re: Mask of the Week Challenge!

Great masking @emaisgr8! I just love those steam eye masks! 💗 Such a nice treat!

Re: Mask of the Week Challenge!

I am going to have to try the Chamomile mask after reading so many great reviews on them, @emaisgr8 Smiley Happy I've only tried the lavender, and I'm almost out so it will be my next scent to try. Love the Bite, too!

Re: Mask of the Week Challenge!

My skin had quite the weekend and was/is in need of some help this week to recover.  I was working at a snow cross event where it was -20C.  Once the wind picked up I spent quite a bit of my day alternating between having my face in the cold wind and being right up against a heater blowing warm air.  Needless to say my skin was super dry to the point where it hurt.  I had put a barrier cream on in the morning and was using my Drunk Elephant Lippie all over my face (I've used this before under my eyes when the skin there has a spat and hates me).  By Sunday night I knew I needed to warm up my body and give my face some love.  While not a C mask I tried one of the Erno Laszio Sooth and Calm Hydrogel Masks that I'd just gotten from TJ Maxx while I sat in a warm bath.  So I've never used a hydrogel mask before this, and I have to ask, how do I know which side of the mask goes against my skin?  The mask did feel nice after the initial sting of having something touch it.  And my skin is back to my normal level of dry now, so I'll give this mask some good credit!

-- Side note... I just looked up the price of these masks they're 80$ for 4 on Holt... holy crap!
