What is a capsule makeup collection?
A capsule makeup collection is a selection of makeup products that can be used to put together different looks for a variety of occasions. For some of us, that may mean a group of essential products for your everyday look plus a few extra items for a more glam or dramatic look; and, for others of us, that may mean, a lineup of our holy grail product(s) in each makeup category. My ideal capsule makeup collection probably falls somewhere in between - we'll (hopefully) find out at the end of the year! I don't see myself as a minimalist, but I don't have an extensive collection of makeup either. I appreciate the collections of people who fall within both camps but I float somewhere in between - on the one hand, my brow product collection would earn a gold star if we were using a minimalist approach to makeup; my lip product lineup, on the other hand, would not. 🤣 It would most definitely not.
Why have a capsule makeup collection?
Everyone will have their own reasons for having (or not having) a more streamlined makeup collection. Over the years, I've just become more interested in having less beauty products on hand (well, except for lip products, lol) - a handful of items I use or reach for more frequently with maybe a few additional products that are go-to's for me for special events or occasions. Don't get me wrong, I love trying new products and I don't see that changing. I just like the idea of having a simpler collection (I appreciate that "simpler" can be relative), curated to my needs and lifestyle.
Why weekly?
A few years ago, beauty & lifestyle blogger Serein Wu, did a weekly series (on her blog and YouTube channel), Makeup Bag Monday, where she rotated her makeup bag each week with new product launches and makeup already in her collection. Every Monday, she shared the products she selected for the upcoming week and provided detailed makeup reviews on the makeup she used for the previous week. I may not post detailed reviews, but will at least try to include a weekly recap (probably at the end of the week) of what products I like and which ones didn't work for me. If weekly works for you, great. If not, feel free to join in based on what works best for you.
What if I don't have enough products to fit the theme for a full face?
No need for your entire makeup capsule to fit the weekly theme(s). Just one will do. And, even if you don't have one that fits squarely within a theme, feel free to post your makeup capsule. We'd love to see what you're using and hear your feedback on the products as you put them to use.
Yes, yes, do join in @ather; it would be great to get your take on the brow gels that you currently have in your rotation. No better way to know how they perform vis-a-vis one another than with a good ol' battle royale!
@itsfi Ok so I have started a battle royal! Or a clash of the brows! So my lineup which I have all opened are:
PATRICK TA Major Brow Lamination Gel 0.17 oz/ 5 mL
MERIT Brow 1980 Volumizing Tinted Eyebrow Gel-Pomade
LAWLESS Hold Up Soft Set Creamy Eyebrow Wax
REFY Brow Sculpt Shape and Hold Gel with Lamination Effect 0.28 oz/ 8.5 mL
NYX brow glue
I decided to do this over a bit of time and do a sort of march madness type thing. Or October Madness! So I have picked 2 contenders and I will try them out and really put them to the test over a week and the winner will go aside and I will pick 2 other and at the end I will battle the winners.
This week I picked Lawless and NYX:
I did use them over the last week and the winner of week one is:
But first I will explain my likes and dislikes!
Lawless: it applied well and held my brows in place. It didn’t leave any flakes or extras. It did work better on one brow over the other. But I think it was because it is longer. The colour matched well.
NYX: applied well and held my brows in place all day. It didn’t leave any leave flakes at the end of the day which is why it didn’t win.
So that leaves the winner of week 1 Lawless!
next week I plan on duelling:
PATRICK TA Major Brow Lamination Gel 0.17 oz/ 5 mL
REFY Brow Sculpt Shape and Hold Gel with Lamination Effect 0.28 oz/ 8.5 mL
Who will win!!!
This is fantastic! I love this and how it really gives a great overview of what the product does. I think it’s so neat, I really have a need to do this with my lippies! It’s fun to read of your assessment of what works and what helps you narrow down your picks! Excellent job! @ather
@peculiarzmakeup Thank you! Such a fun way to figure out what I like!
Yes, yes, yes to this battle of the brows @ather! I enjoyed reading about your likes and dislikes and the detail you put into them - it helps so much to know how well it performed or didn't perform for you. Thank you! Ahhh, a win for Lawless! You know, if it were not for your posts, I would not have known Lawless has a brow product. It's an underrated brand. Speaking of which, I need to pull out my Lawless powder foundation and see how it performs in the cooler seasons. Note to self - Self, ...
@itsfi Yes I seem to get stuck on brands and buy all the things and this was one of them! I was happy to use it again and realize how much I like it!! Win win!!
Oh great plan I have the same one I should try it also!!! We can compare notes!!!
@ather, it'll be like a study group. 100% agree on all buying all the things. What product of theirs was your introduction to the brand?
@itsfi Yes! I do like study groups! Hmm I think it was LAWLESS Mini The Little One Talc-Free Eyeshadow Palette after having my little man I noticed my eyes have gotten more sensitive and all the eyeshadow I had used seemed to irritate my eyes more! I remember getting LAWLESS Mini Forget The Filler Lip Plumper Line Smoothing Gloss Rosy Outlook also shortly after maybe.
@itsfi I think Milk has a couple of brow products now, IIRC, they just came out with a new one, but this is the only one I've tried. I'm very interested in how my battle of the brows will turn out too, I really don't know yet! 😅
Your capsule looks so good! Ooh and vibrant @caitbird
Your right, this totally works well on both themes. 😃
A battle of the brows, that's going too make a good showdown. 💪
I love your eye makeup. You executed it beautifully! This looks like it was just so fun to create and wear, and you know I think it would have been great look for a Sephoria day or a killer look to rock at a concert. 🎶💜
@CynthieLu thank you so much! I do love my vibrant colors 😊 I am honestly interested to know which brow gel ends up coming out on top between the two, at the moment, I can't decide! 😅
October Makeup Capsule Themes
I don't even know how it's already October ... 😲
Thank you to everyone who has stopped by, to share a capsule, to engage others about their capsule or to just check out this thread.
Here are the prompts and themes to look forward to this month.
🍃🍂🎵🎶 Week 40 - (September 30 - October 6) - The "Pop of Colour": Fall Edit Makeup Capsule and/or The Musician Founded or Owned Beauty Brands Makeup Capsule 🍃🍂🎵🎶 - Hey BIC! Fall is in full swing. Show us some pop of fall color, be it lipstick, eyeshadow, blush, etc. Shouting out @missjeanie for the great theme suggestion and @cianni who I think mentioned earlier in the year some fall-worthy red lippies in her collection.
Or, with the American Music Awards airing on October 6, thought it might be a fun way to jazz up the prompts with a capsule consisting of one or more products from beauty brands founded or owned by musicians. See spoiler for non-exhaustive list.
Below are some musician founded or owned makeup brands. This is a non-exhaustive list. Brands with an asterisk (*) next to it are available at Sephora (in store or online, or both). If the founder/owner is not easily identifiable by the brand name, his/her/their name appears in the parens.
about-face (Halsey)
Dolly Beauty (Dolly Parton)
*Fenty Beauty by Rihanna
*GXVE by Gwen Stefani
*Haus Labs by Lady Gaga
Keys Soulcare (Alicia Keys) - thank you for letting me know about this and the VBB one, @danielledanielle. I *might* have purchased a tinted lip balm from her brand. 😁
*Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez
R.E.M. Beauty (Ariana Grande)
Victoria Beckham Beauty
@itsfi thanks for the tag! I'm excited for these fun themes!
Week 39 - The Brands at SEPHORiA Makeup Capsule - Coming in very late with this week's capsule, which was about options. Brands at SEPHORiA are marked with an asterisk (*) Products that are bold italicized are the standouts from last week.

Will be back to debrief and tag products another day

These makeup cases are among my favorites. The one carrying my makeup is from Truffle; the one with the brushes is from the SEPHORA COLLECTION The Starter Brush Set

The Week In Review:
🏆 Top Shelf - I rarely, if ever (emphasis on "if ever") go for orange hued shades. That said, I have been making more of an effort to trying them and looking into finding one (possibly two) that might make my ultimate makeup collection. Me think Tatcha The Kissu Lip Mask in Kiku Kiku - Orange Blossom might be one of those two shades. It would make sense then that this is limited edition. Not sure whether I will pick up another one before they run out - what am I saying?! Of course, I'll pick up another one. 😉
💗 The Standouts - Soooo, my initial plan was to spend more time doing my makeup for SEPHORiA. Weeeeelll, that didn't quite happen. I'm a creature of habit so I just went with what I know and reached (mostly) for those beauties that I reach for every day, the ones I loooove. Some are 🐐 (GOATs), others are ones that have made their way to the Top Shelf here, and some may be making their way to one or both of those categories soon enough. I highlighted my standouts for the week in bold italics above.
🗑 Declutters - No declutters from last week's capsule.
Beautiful well crafted capsule! I immediately spotted the Halloween decor cloth! Such a neat concept! These capsules are so helpful in introducing and sharing thoughts on products and brands some of these brands I’ve never tried I really love the connection to Sephoria and the honorable mentions of the attendees products it’s a different way to connect to the event even if I wasn’t there. Would definatley love to see the Tatcha swatch. These are beautiful picks. Love how everything is connected 💕 @itsfi
Ahhh, thank you so much @peculiarzmakeup! I wanted to find a way for everyone to be a part of SEPHORiA 2024, or have it be a part of everyone's everyday looks. I spent a lot of time talking with brand reps and founders at last year's SEPHORiA, documenting as many moments as I could. This year, I focused more on the masterclasses and just being with the other ambassadors and BIC beauties that I haven't seen in a year. I posted some snippets on the Sephoria 2024 Atlanta, Georgia thread and will post other deets from my trip in other threads on the boards.
Here's the swatch of the Tatcha The Kissu Lip Mask in Kiku Kiku - Orange Blossom
The limited edition kissu lip mask is an annual treat I pick up for myself. I was a little hesitant about this one because I'm a little gun-shy about orange shades but decided to give it a try. It's not a color family I have a lot of in my collection and it's nice to break out of my comfort zone every now and again.
Speaking of getting out of my comfort zone, a trip to the YSL booth at SEPHORiA and time with their rep (who was so great to chat with!) has resulted in 2 more of their liquid blushes to my list for the next sale, including the Yves Saint Laurent Make Me Blush 12H Blurring Liquid Blush 57 Coral Clash.
That’s truly such an amazing experience, I think meeting in person would be so epic! Everyone’s the best here at BIC and I really appreciate all the ambassadors due to keep it running smoothly and providing engaging topics and threads! Oh I adore that shade that is so lovely that tatcha ventured into a new mask love it 😍 @itsfi
@peculiarzmakeup, I think the Tatcha Orange Blossom would look stunning on you. Come to think of it, I can't imagine there being a lip shade you couldn't pull off beautifully. I've never seen a bad lip color on you.
Aw! This made my day! Thank you! I really appreciate that. Likewise @itsfi 🫶
@itsfi you have a wonderful capsule here! So many great products!
I am debating picking up the Sephora Collection skin tint during the next sale - debating because no, I don't need any more complexion products 😅 but I'd love to try this one. May need to swatch a couple of shades in store first though.
I love your ghostie background - is it a scarf, or a blanket? And the beautiful orange/fall-hued flowers of course! Glad you are liking the Tatcha holiday lip mask - I love their lip mask the most out of all the lip masks I've tried, and their limited editions (and their packaging) are always so beautiful, I can never resist picking them up.
