What is a capsule makeup collection?
A capsule makeup collection is a selection of makeup products that can be used to put together different looks for a variety of occasions. For some of us, that may mean a group of essential products for your everyday look plus a few extra items for a more glam or dramatic look; and, for others of us, that may mean, a lineup of our holy grail product(s) in each makeup category. My ideal capsule makeup collection probably falls somewhere in between - we'll (hopefully) find out at the end of the year! I don't see myself as a minimalist, but I don't have an extensive collection of makeup either. I appreciate the collections of people who fall within both camps but I float somewhere in between - on the one hand, my brow product collection would earn a gold star if we were using a minimalist approach to makeup; my lip product lineup, on the other hand, would not. 🤣 It would most definitely not.
Why have a capsule makeup collection?
Everyone will have their own reasons for having (or not having) a more streamlined makeup collection. Over the years, I've just become more interested in having less beauty products on hand (well, except for lip products, lol) - a handful of items I use or reach for more frequently with maybe a few additional products that are go-to's for me for special events or occasions. Don't get me wrong, I love trying new products and I don't see that changing. I just like the idea of having a simpler collection (I appreciate that "simpler" can be relative), curated to my needs and lifestyle.
Why weekly?
A few years ago, beauty & lifestyle blogger Serein Wu, did a weekly series (on her blog and YouTube channel), Makeup Bag Monday, where she rotated her makeup bag each week with new product launches and makeup already in her collection. Every Monday, she shared the products she selected for the upcoming week and provided detailed makeup reviews on the makeup she used for the previous week. I may not post detailed reviews, but will at least try to include a weekly recap (probably at the end of the week) of what products I like and which ones didn't work for me. If weekly works for you, great. If not, feel free to join in based on what works best for you.
What if I don't have enough products to fit the theme for a full face?
No need for your entire makeup capsule to fit the weekly theme(s). Just one will do. And, even if you don't have one that fits squarely within a theme, feel free to post your makeup capsule. We'd love to see what you're using and hear your feedback on the products as you put them to use.
@caitbird, if you can find a good shade match, I highly recommend the SEPHORA COLLECTION Reveal The Real 12HR Soft Radiant Skin Tint - something about it keeps me going back to it. It blurs in a very natural way and the radiance is more of a your skin but better healthy radiance. There you have, that combo is what makes it so appealing to me. 😊 Just talking about these things with folks on BIC helps. Ha! I like mixing this with my bronzing serums to make it workable all year round.
Awww, thank you! Believe it or not, that ghostie background is a bag from TJ Maxx, the ones available across the checkout registers - it was $0.99, if I'm remembering right. Tagging @peculiarzmakeup for this as well. I didn't technically need another bag but this one was too cute to pass up. They still have a bunch of them in store.
The flowers I picked up for my hotel room. With the wind and rain from Hurricane Helene, I was wanting something bright and homey for my room. 💐 I love having flowers in various rooms in my home or on my work desk so I picked these up when I went to the grocery store for water, fruit and snacks.
@itsfi hmm, I just might to pick up that skin tint during the sale then! I'm planning to make a trip to my local Sephora sometime soon, so I'll try to swatch it then.
I love TJ Maxx (and HomeGoods) bags, I have several myself. They're good bags, they hold a lot! And at $0.99 each, how can you go wrong? 😂
Ohhhh, HomeGoods - it’s a dangerous place @caitbird. So many things to be distracted by. The closest one to me is a 45-60 minute drive so I don’t get there often. It’s connected to a TJ Maxx so double the trouble when I do make my way there. 😆
@itsfi you are so right, very dangerous indeed 😂 a HomeGoods- TJ Maxx combo sounds like heaven! but also very bad for my wallet 😅
You have such a mighty arsenal in this capsule! I love seeing something reach loved status so quickly. The sounds of Tatcha's new lip mask are pretty good. I think I've seen at least a few pics on BIC of wear tests and it looks like a very pretty shade. 🧡 @itsfi
I like you choice of capsule bags for this challenge, the windows let you easily see everything inside. 😍 I think that might bring a little peace of mind traveling. If you weren't sure it was packed, it would be easy to look and see. 😉
Taking photos of this week's capsule was both fun and sobering @CynthieLu! Fun in that taking photos was done "on location" 🤣 with different lighting and backgrounds than what I'm familiar with. Sobering, as it shows just how much stuff I have, and this is just what I brought with me, which is admittedly, overkill, but you know ... options. hahaha!
Thanks for reminding me about the Tatcha lippie. Meant to post the swatch - it's pretty pink-y peach shade on me.
Thank you for the swatch! @itsfi it is a very pretty peach. 🍑🩷
Ahhh I know, options especially when your traveling, where you never know what you might want to reach for, they are sooo important! You we prepared for anything 😄
@CynthieLu, I was prepared if the storm lasted for months and we couldn't leave the hotel. 😂🤣😂 This was so uncharacteristic of me to pack this much makeup, but I did enjoy having options. My skincare was much more refined in scope, which reminds me that I need to post that to the Travel Essentials - what are your must-haves when traveling? thread - I have some catching up to do on the boards.
From this week's capsule theme's I decided to try
🩷 The Brands at SEPHORiA Makeup Capsule 🩷
I was reading from the list of brands that would be attending ( thank you for adding that to your post @itsfi that was very helpful 🙏) and I knew I had a few of those brands in my collection. I wanted to see if I could put together a capsule just from those. 🙂
Yves Saint Laurent Candy Glow Tinted Butter Balm
SEPHORA COLLECTION Mini Love The Lift Curling + Volumizing Mascara Ultra Black ( gratis 🙏)

Incredible and well thought capsule! I think this is such a neat concept. Amazing photo. I love the products you chose and how you put together something that would be a staple the event. The ND palletes are so pretty I’ve yet to try one. This is so neat! @CynthieLu 💕
Than you so much @peculiarzmakeup I had fun putting this one together. The packaging on so many of these were just so pretty and everything ended up going really well together. 😄 I like my mini ND's but I wish they had space for just one more pan, I often feel like they are missing a good transition shade for me.
I like the sound of a transition shade but not so familiar what would you envision as your go to transition shade? It’s so fun on this community you learn so many new concepts! I’m so interested to learn. You displayed everything together beautifully! @CynthieLu it kind of reminds me of a Segway to something it sounds neat I’d love to hear more 🙂
It is a color segway @peculiarzmakeup I love your wording!
I'm fair and even with a light looking color in ND's mini palette's they wear deeper than they look on my skin. I like a shade not to far off from my skin tone when I'm going for an everyday look and I use it on and above my crease and across my lid. Than the deeper shades slowly and lightly over top and blend blend blend. 😀
I love that! That would be very neat! 💕 @CynthieLu and also very convient which is key 🔑 😁
Yes! 💯 @peculiarzmakeup the simpler the better. 😉
@CynthieLu great capsule! I agree, the CT bronzer case is so pretty! I love Natasha Denona's mini eyeshadow palettes (well, I love all her eyeshadow palettes pretty much 😅), I don't have either of those but I have quite a few, they are so cute and handy.
Thank you! @caitbird 💜 Right? The CT case is such a pretty one. 😄
The mini's from ND are hard for me to use standalone, they usually are missing just that one light shade I need. I just pick up another palette for a transition shade etc . but out off all her mini's I have, these ones are the most usable on thier own for me.
Excellent choices @CynthieLu!!! Those are some spectacular brands - I see those Natasha Denona mini eyeshadow palettes and think about including one in a future pan it! challenge. But remind myself to keep the focus on working through the one actually in my pan it! challenge. The combination of mini Bronze and mini Retro really give you so many beautiful options.
What a great collection @CynthieLu. These look like they could really create some beautiful looks!
Thank you! @bakeamuffin I think these will work nicely together. These little mini ND's are often missing a light enough shade for me to do a complete look but these two have the best range imo. 😀
The Highs and Lows from Week 38 - The LatinX Founded/Owned Beauty Brands Makeup Capsule
Buckle up, folks, this recap is going to be heavy on the photos. I'll highlight the standout products (Top Shelf or otherwise) in the recap section and speak to the declutters all at once at the end.
Complexion:
I forgot to grab the Rare Beauty concealer when I was swatching, which is a bummer because it was the standout of my complexion products last week. The Rare Beauty setting spray is nice but I have a handful of favorites. Debating whether to pass it on or try to use it up. 🤔
Eyes:
Both these eyeshadow quads are very pretty, and reminders that I need to be very, very, veeery highly selective when picking up more eyeshadows. That will be easier said than done but I am going to try. The Melt Cosmetics eye liner (Apricot Creme) goes on nicely. The shade itself though is too peachy for my waterline and cupid's bow. It has, however, worked beautifully, as an undereye color corrector. Beauty repurposed. 😍
Cheeks:
I'm still working my way and testing out these cheek products but am enjoying all of these shades, especially pairing these for the glazed cheeks / blushlights look. 😊 I'll try to remember to bring a couple of these back next month a la Cheek Challenge Fall 2024: Fall Flushing Forward
