So, I got Emerald Sun yesterday and sadly I'm not in love 😞
My shadow, for whatever reason, did not swatch nearly as nicely as @Mochapj's. If I gently swirled my finger into the pan, the shadow crumbled/balled up into little pieces in the pan. For this reason, the TF logo was GONE in one swatch. If I swipe that on the back of my hand it still looks like little crumbles, unless I actually spread those little chunks and THEN it looked *kind of* like Mocha's swatch.
A regular eye shadow primer wasn't enough and even glitter glue didn't prevent the intense fall out I get with this. I use the same technique as all my other glitters: use a dense natural shadow packing brush to gently dab in the pan, then on my lids. No swiping, as that would sheer it out completely or cause it to skip over the glitter glue. The little translucent sparkly pieces got EVERYWHERE under my eyes. Because they're so light, a fan brush couldn't remove all of it (maybe it would if I dust setting powder heavily under my eyes first - not something I've had to do with eye shadows) and because I don't wear foundation, I have nothing to cover it up so I'm left with a ridiculous sparkly under eye.
There's no way I can do a full smokey eye with this shadow like in the TF promo image. The edges don't blend out once I apply this over a glitter glue since the blending would simply remove all of the glitter on top, plus I never have any luck blending something out once I've glitter glue somewhere on my lid - it just skips, so I always put glitter glue and then glitter shadows last.
Even doing a regular eye look took more work than usual, and although I do like the way it turned out I wasn't completely happy with the results (sloppy). I typically finish off with some dark colour on the outer corner and blend in order to create some dimension, but that was very difficult to do in this case. Perhaps a more experienced glitter eyeshadow user would have no issues with this shadow.
I really wish I picked up VB x EL Charred Emerald when it was still available, I was hoping this would be similar, but from swatches I don't think it even comes close. The VB shadow looked much better in swatches.
Haven't decided whether I will return yet. I want to see how the shadow wears throughout the day and would maybe give it another go (more practice?) if it wears well. On the other hand, I'm not sure if the effort is worth $44 CAD when I can get something else that I'd love for the same price (Boys & Girls in Mitchell, perhaps?)
I'm happy to report that Emerald Sun wore very well. 15 hours and a sweaty workout later, the eyeshadow was very much still completely in tact, and had barely faded.
I used a fingertip to apply as Mocha suggested and I think I can use this for a smokey eye, just need to apply/blend out the edges with my finger tips after applying most of the colour with a brush over glitter glue. Will try that sometime soon--for now I'm keeping the eye shadow 🙂
@k617 the colour does look beautiful on you, but as I mentioned on IG to someone, I believe there are some inconsistencies in quality with this shade and possibly with the Paillette shades in general.
i had seen 5 or 6 swatches of this shade before I saw it in person and none of them looked as opaque as when I swatched it - everyone else’s were spotty and patchy as you described.
i purchased it with my reward card bugh it arrived last week completely shattered, so I’m waiting to see what the quality of its replacement will be like.
ETA: that said, I wouldn’t recommend applying any TF glitter shades with a brush - even the quad ones I only apply with a fingertip
Thanks @Mochapj 🙂 Yes, now that I've swatched this on my own I agree that there must be inconsistencies. Your swatch appears to be the exception rather than the norm...but the Sephora reviews for Emerald Sun are also very positive so far!
Thanks for the tip on TF shadows (this is my first). I tried using my fingers to apply yesterday but most of the shadow stuck to my finger. I wasn't using a glitter glue though (just regular shadow primer) so maybe I'll try that tomorrow. It's just so difficult to get a neat application since my eyelids are so small haha!
I think it’s true @k617 - I had a similar experience with the Black Onyx Paillette - most of the swatches I saw prior to going to a store were dark and opaque but when I finally swatched it myself, it had no colour at all and hardly any glitter payoff.
It’s a shame because the glitters in their quads are some of their most unique shades and I would’ve expected the same from the singles, especially at this pricepoint
There's a 100 point reward for Tom Ford lipstick in Indian Rose.
For anyone who's been able to test out multiple formulas of the single eyeshadows, between Vinyl, Sateen, and Suede, which formula do you like the best/find the most unique? I got Camera Obscura and have limited myself to picking up just one more ha because they're such poor value compared to the quads, but unfortunately I don't think I'll have time to get to a counter and test them out any time soon.
@seaofcowards personally I think the more unique/standout formulas are the Paillettes and Vinyls.
But it probably also depends on what type of makeup you like to wear. If you aren't big into glitter or brighter colours, these 2 finishes are probably not going to wow you.
I wasn't impressed by any of the Ultrasuedes when I swatched them and the Suedes felt nice (and people have said they blend well) but none of them seemed so unique as to justify the price point.
Thanks!!
@seaofcowardsit is unfortunately no sub for CS
Cognac Sable, Firesign, copper from Golden Mink, copper from Soleil Warm palette
Oh wow! They are totally different. Thx @Mochapj. In a good note, Firesign does look good. 😉
Agree @blackkitty2014 - it's not quite what I was hoping it would be, but it's still a very pretty shade.
I was back at my local counter today trying to find the rest of the shades I wanted to swatch. A lot of the testers at my counter seemed to be mislabeled; they had the teal shade labeled as Fire Sign and a bunch of others seemed wrong. I did find what I most of what I was looking for.
Left 4: Vertigo, (whatever this second shade is, it was labeled as Body Double but I *think* it's Burnt Suede), Agenda Rouge, Videotape
Middle: Emerald Sun
Right 4: Black Onyx, Purple Reign, Warm Leatherette, Infrared
Thank you for the compliment @TraceyEB @blackkitty2014 - to be honest I'm actually passing on Infrared. It's not to my particular taste; I like my oranges and coppers to have darker bases than this and it is a bit too peachy on me for what I prefer.
I think it's going to look absolutely stunning on lighter skin, though.
