Off the bat, I must confess that I already like masks by Origins. For years I used Out of Trouble as an overnight spot treatment and I still use their Mega Mushroom mask.

Hello Calm smells fantastic, and the use of essential oils are evident. The clary sage note is very strong which is great because I love it.

Normally, essential oils are near the end of the list but Lavender EO is near the top. It's 7th in a list that includes apricot kernel oil, hemp seed oil, organic brown sugar and safflower seed oil. Water and butylene glycol*** are the first two ingredients. Because the EOs are so expensive and high up in the list, I'm going to guess that the majority of the mask is primarily comprised of the first six ingredients rather than an overdosing of EOs.

Having said that, I would spot test this mask if your skin is sensitive. I didn't experience any irritation but EOs are also potentially irritating. Natural does not always mean safe! Others have mentioned bergamot oil and I believe most citrus oils make the skin photosensitive so be careful with that as well. This is definitely a night-time mask.

The mask also contains hydrating ingredients like squalene and linoleic acid. For those of you who enjoy fermented skin products like SK-II's toner, there is a lactobacillus ferment. However, these come in at the middle of the ingredients list so they may not be present in high concentrations.

I did a little research online and found the top three oils included in this mask offer a number of skin benefits. Apricot seed oil contains vitamins A, C, E and K. Hemp seed oil has skin friendly acids like linoleic acid and vits A, B and D. @veronika23 is correct, hemp seed oil is not the same as the active cannabinoid CBD, which is itself an extract that can be dissolved in oil. Safflower seed oil is rich in linoleic acid.

Hello Calm was not as hydrating as I expected although the weather is still very humid and I'm not at all suffering from dehydrated skin. My skin did feel softer and firmer. In terms of performance, I like it, but I think I get more hydration from the Mega Mushroom? I'll try to remember to try this in the winter when my skin tends to get parched and report here again. Maybe I'll go halfsies for a real comparison!

*** edit: if you are avoiding petrochemicals in your skincare, this is a common one!
