Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge 2024

Hello, BIC Beauties! If the idea of makeup capsules piques your curiosity, or you're interested in seeing what's in the beauty collection or weekly makeup bag of your fellow BIC beauties, jump right on in - with questions, comments or a capsule of your own to share.

To add a fun take on putting together a makeup capsule, I've included theme(s) for the weekly capsule - some weeks, I have enough products in my stash (eek!) to make a whole capsule based on the prompt; other weeks, I have just one or two items that fit neatly within theme.

What is a capsule makeup collection?  

A capsule makeup collection is a selection of makeup products that can be used to put together different looks for a variety of occasions. For some of us, that may mean a group of essential products for your everyday look plus a few extra items for a more glam or dramatic look; and, for others of us, that may mean, a lineup of our holy grail product(s) in each makeup category. My ideal capsule makeup collection probably falls somewhere in between - we'll (hopefully) find out at the end of the year! I don't see myself as a minimalist, but I don't have an extensive collection of makeup either. I appreciate the collections of people who fall within both camps but I float somewhere in between - on the one hand, my brow product collection would earn a gold star if we were using a minimalist approach to makeup; my lip product lineup, on the other hand, would not. 🤣 It would most definitely not.  

Why have a capsule makeup collection?  

Everyone will have their own reasons for having (or not having) a more streamlined makeup collection. Over the years, I've just become more interested in having less beauty products on hand (well, except for lip products, lol) - a handful of items I use or reach for more frequently with maybe a few additional products that are go-to's for me for special events or occasions.  Don't get me wrong, I love trying new products and I don't see that changing. I just like the idea of having a simpler collection (I appreciate that "simpler" can be relative), curated to my needs and lifestyle.

Why weekly? 
A few years ago, beauty & lifestyle blogger Serein Wu, did a weekly series (on her blog and YouTube channel), Makeup Bag Monday, where she rotated her makeup bag each week with new product launches and makeup already in her collection. Every Monday, she shared the products she selected for the upcoming week and provided detailed makeup reviews on the makeup she used for the previous week. I may not post detailed reviews, but will at least try to include a weekly recap (probably at the end of the week) of what products I like and which ones didn't work for me.  If weekly works for you, great. If not, feel free to join in based on what works best for you.

What if I don't have enough products to fit the theme for a full face?

No need for your entire makeup capsule to fit the weekly theme(s). Just one will do. And, even if you don't have one that fits squarely within a theme, feel free to post your makeup capsule. We'd love to see what you're using and hear your feedback on the products as you put them to use.

It’s the Dior highlighter @heartsmyface? 😍 You always have such a lovely radiance about you. ♥️ A Dior beauty I do not have … or maybe I do? I need to go through my bin. If it’s not one of the Diors I have, I’m adding it to my list (which note to self … Self, remember to get that posted stat!!!) 

Yessssss to Hanni!! I was soooo happy to see them at Sephoria. Definitely start diving into the collection - they have some great products, at least the few I’ve tried.

These all sound wonderful @heartsmyface. the Pillow Gel is very intriguing, I've never heard of it before. 

Ahh yes! I tried the ONE/SIZE by Patrick Starrr Jumbo On 'Til Dawn Mattifying Waterproof Setting Spray  for the first time this summer at a festival and it really did keep everything on rain, swear or shine. It is pretty impressive. 😄

Bringing Week 42's "The Makeup I'm Thankful For" Makeup Capsule to a close a few days earlier than usual. I'm playing with a couple different products / capsules today and over the weekend. 

Top Shelf:

• No new additions to the Top Shelf.

Standouts (in the good way): 

• PAT McGRATH LABS LUST: Lip Gloss Bronze Divinity (gratis) - this has been one of my go-to glosses to use when a lip color on its own is more "meh" than I hoped for.
• ILIA Skin Rewind Blurring Foundation and Concealer Complexion Stick - this one's a good one - buildable coverage. I find that if I let it sit for a while, the melds nicely with the natural oils in my skin to create a natural, softly blurred appearance. 😍 Best suited for normal, oily, combo skin but it works on dry skin like mine if I just make sure that my skin is adequately prepped (e.g., moisturized and c'mon, with dry skin, that's something I keep in mind, regardless of the foundation I'm using)
• Tatcha The Kissu Lip Scrub 0.4 oz / 12g came in handy with the red lippies I reached for this week. 
• Makeup By Mario Light I liner - I tried this as a lip liner - to overline and found it works pretty well now that my skin tone is inching its way back to its usual color. Nice to have another way to use this, but given that it's discontinued, I will be using it sparingly on anything other than my waterline. 

Undecided:

• Cheekbone Beauty SUSTAIN Lipstick KÉYAH - I have an older version of this lipstick; it leans more warm than I remember. It's not bad though paired with PML Bronze Divnity.
• SEPHORA COLLECTION Retractable Rouge Gel Lip Liner 35 bad apple - this isn't bad; I want to pair it with other red lipsticks to see how it wears. It is more brown than I expected, which is neither bad nor good. Just an observation. I'm not making any final judgments on the red lip products in my group of throwdowns until that battle comes to a close.

Declutters: 

• NUDESTIX Nudescreen SPF 30 Lip Balm Natural - the tint on this shows up as a warm tan and takes some time to absorb. I actually prefer the Cay Skin lip balm over this one. The nudestix balm expires at the end of the year. I tend to keep to expiration dates whhen it comes to SPF and don't see myself reaching for it enough to get anywere close to using it up by then. I'll rehome this so it gets some use and some love.
• MAC Cosmetics Fix+ Stay Over Alcohol-Free Long Lasting Setting Spray-MINI 1 oz / 30 mL - I'm not sure if this just wasn't well paired with the Ilia foundation stick, but my makeup started breaking up a lot when I used this, about 5-6 hours after application. This was odd because I've worn the Ilia on its own and it stayed on for longer than that and looked beautiful with a longer wear. This has happened a few times this week so I'm thinking it may be the MAC spray? I do like the MAC spray and it may just not be compatible with the Ilia. That said, I have a handful of setting sprays that I love so I'm going to let this one go - this one which is about half full and I'll rehome it. I also have an unused mini spray (promo gwp) which I will donate. 

This brings us to 3 declutters so far for October.

Thank you for the update on how this capsule worked out for you. @itsfi that's such a good point, I enjoy the way PMG glosses can perk up a lippie when you just need a little extra ooomph. Did you find the gloss smelt like cookies? I like it's lightly sweet scent.  😀

Cookies?!!! My sense of smell was off yesterday so I made sure to smell PML Bronze Divinity this morning during my routine @CynthieLu - I don't pick up a full-on cookie smell, but I do get a very faint, subtly sweet, gourmand-leaning scent.

It's really is a lovely light gourmand scent, for me it makes little treats like vanilla wafers or manilla cookies come to mind. 🍪 Lol yes cookies, but maybe I just always have sweets on the brain. 😉 @itsfi

I think I first saw the RB bag in the monthly hauls thread, it really catches my eye whenever I see it. It looks so soft and very plush. Your picks for your capsule look very snugly and cozy in it @Mellmars1185. 😊oooh may I ask your comparison thoughts on Dior's foundation stick vs Armani's liquid foundation? Both are formulas I'm incredibly curious about. 🧐

@CynthieLu Thank you! The Rare Beauty bag is great quality and fits a lot! After I bought it I saw they had it as a GWP. That would be a good time to pick one up 😉. Great question about the foundations. I think that the Dior foundation stick might be suited more for dry to normal skin types. It glides in so nicely. However, I noticed that I do get quite shiny while wearing it in warm climates. The Armani I would say is great to wear all year long and is better suited for my oily skin. I really like the component of the Dior. It is convenient on the go. Both are great though!

Ooouh, pretty choices @Mellmars1185! Ahhh, there's that Rare Beauty puffy pouch - love! It's so poofy and puffy! And it holds quite a bit, too! I was pleasantly suprised by that. 

I may have to retract that LYS Beauty has a Canadian connection - I feel like it does but I could be wrong. I know that Ilia's founder was born and raised in Vancouver, British Columbia. I'm interested to hear your thoughts on the Ilia lip crayon and whether the Rare Beauty brightener balances out the concealer shade - good idea to pair those two together! 👍

@Mellmars1185, I do have the bag in the blush shade. Love how roomy and cushiony they feel. Do you also have the larger tote? I have zero need for it but I'm curious to know how large it is.
