BALETTE ROYALE: Showdown of the Shadows

Greetings everyone, we're doing a bit of battle as Ambassadors and we would love some help.  We're curious to find the eyeshadow palette of all palettes.  We're doing a BATTLE ROYALE, or shall we call it a BALETTE ROYALE 😂🙃

1000013161.gif

DUN

DUN

DUN...

Background:

  1.  Select three eyeshadow palettes of your choosing to create a look from the theme of the week.  Try to stick with one palette for the entire challenge.
  2. For four weeks there's a theme. Try to create the most looks you can within that theme.  I will try to post a hint before the week starts.  You can ask for additional details once the theme is posted
  3. The other two palettes, though?  You can use them, it's a palette battle.  You can make a switch to your other palettes .But, one time only.
  4. You must select palettes from three different brands.*
  5. *If you have a "megapalette" like a Natasha Denona 28 pan, Danessa Light works, a Morphe, etc. you can use them, but I'm requesting you select 10-12 shades to use.  (Keeps it fairly similar amongst others and this also to get you to use your stash. )
  6.   Keep it respectful.

How to join:

  • Check the thread each week for the theme.
Post a look, or tag/post the palette you chose
  • Remember, the challenge is to try to choose one palette to take you through the battle.
  • I'll say it again.  Keep it respectful.  This is about using your stash and possibly finding new ways to use them.  If someone doesn't like your favorite, well, show them how your favorite works and post-up, otherwise keep it polite and keep it moving.
  • If it helps think of the additional palettes are like "lives".  You can switch to another palette, but once you've used a palette add moved on, it's out.   For example, if I use Pat McGrath Labs Mothership I for the 1st and 2nd challenge.  But then week 3 I switch to Natasha's Golden, I've used 2 palettes.  I can't go back to Pat, and I have only one more "life" left so I can continue with Golden, or make one more switch.

At the end, the tally will be for the ten most used palettes.

Week 1: (Feb 10-16) NATURE

Week 2 (Feb 18-23) RED CARPET READY (OR RUNWAY READY VIA NYFW)

Week 3 (Feb 24 -2) 20th Century

Week 4 (Mar 3-9) Avant Garde!

Nicely done everyone. All hail the queen @haleyvvvv 👑

Re: BALETTE ROYALE: Showdown of the Shadows

The looks @haleyvvvv put together with the Sydney Grace x Mel Thompson Tiny Marvels palette were amazing!  Awesome that she took that palette through all the fun challenges. @danielledanielle.

Re: BALETTE ROYALE: Showdown of the Shadows

Week 4 (Mar 3-9) Avant Garde! - Take 2 🎬 and Take 3 🎬

I tried another couple of avant garde looks over the weekend, in large part because I wanted to get in the Yves Saint Laurent Couture Mini Clutch Eyeshadow Palette 100 Stora Dolls.

Also, having previously done a couple of looks for the Balettte Royale inspired from 2 of the 3 musicians featured in the Sephora co-produced/co-sponsoredFaces of Music documentary, I felt like it was only fair to try a look inspired by the third featured musician, Becky G, which included a fabulous cat eye which for her, also includes the detail of lining the inner corner of her eye with liquid liner. In her segment, she also uses gemstones for added sparkle.

Not gonna lie, lining the inner corner with a liquid eyeliner (or with any liner for me) took several tries. And, after some self-editing of the rhinestones, here's the end result:
Week 4 - Avant Garde IIB.jpg
Week 4 - Stora Dolls.jpg
2.  Shade 2 from YSL Stora Dolls all over lid bringing the color just above my crease, with one side of SEPHORA COLLECTION PRO Shadow Brush #15
3.  Shade 4 packed onto just the lid, with the other side of the SC 15 brush
4.  Shade 3 onto outer V and blend, with Wayne Goss The Collector's Edition #12 Small Pencil Brush (there was some fall out onto the lower lash line)
5.  Light tap of Shade 1 to middle of lid with the WG #12
6.  Line upper lashes with Danessa Myricks Beauty Linework Paintbrush Fluid Liquid Eyeliner 0.034 oz / 1 ml, tiny-ish cat eye and line the inner corner 😬 - I overdid it with the cotton swab, blending out the liner more than I should have / wanted to
7.  Curl lashes with Shiseido Eyelash Curler and apply Clio Kill Lash Superproof Mascara Long Curling.

Then for no other reason than just to see if I could do a look combining something from all three of the musicians' looks in the documentary, I tried a slightly similar look, aiming to incorporate stars from Chappell Roan's look, a green liquid liner from Victoria Monet's look, lining the inner corner of the eye from Becky G's look along with some extra sparkle, but with eyeshadow instead of gems.
Week 4 - Avant Garde III.jpg
1.  Primed lids with my foundation (Urban Decay Face Bond Self Setting Waterproof Foundation) and even though the UD is self setting, I set the foundation on my lids with SEPHORA COLLECTION Translucent Loose Setting Powder (gratis - thank you, @TeamBIC!)
2.  Apply Shade 2 from YSL Stora Dolls all over the lid with one side of a SC 15 brush, bringing the color past my natural crease
3.  Apply Shade 4 onto just my lid space with the other side of SC 15
4.  Lightly press Shade 3 onto lid, from middle of lid to outer corner with one side of a second SC 15
5.  Apply Shade 3 onto outer V with a heavier hand, with WG The Collector's Edition #12 Small Pencil Brush, and blend into crease
6.  Pack Shade 1 onto lid, from inner corner to middle of the lid, with the other side of the second SC 15 - there was fall out onto my waterline from the sparkles from this shade. When I was watching Anna Sawai's Vogue get ready YT video, she mentioned fall out from her eye pencil and using it, smudging it slightly instead of cleaning it up, to add to a smoky eye look. I went with a similar approach here when some sparkles made their way to my lower lash line. It actually looks not too bad with the inner corners being lined. You know, sometimes, it's the things we don't plan or intend that end up working out better than we could even imagine. That's probably true not just for makeup. 😉
7.  Line with Danessa Myrick Liquid EyeLiner, including inner corners and wing
8.  Line above the DM line with SEPHORA COLLECTION Sephora Colorful® Wink-It Felt Tip Liquid Waterproof Eyeliner 03 Army Babe  (a substitute for the green used in the documentary) to the outer corner - this didn't turn out as well as I hoped and the green doesn't really show up
9.  Curl lashes and apply a layer of waterproof mascara - #SEPHORA COLLECTION Love The Lift Curling + Volumizing Waterproof Mascara Ultra Black
10.  Apply just a teensy amount of UD Bond on the side of eye as primer and to make the shadows for the stars show up better
11.  Paint on stars with stencils and one layer of Shade 3, topped with one layer of Shade 1
12.  Apply second coat of mascara, this time - PAT McGRATH LABS FetishEyes™ Lengthening Mascara 0.27 oz/ 8 mL

Done! In hindsight, I would have tried to (i) do a thicker second line of the green eyeliner on the upper lash line, (ii) create more of a curve with the stars, and (iii) add falsies.

I went further with this challenge than I thought I would be able to. In general, I'm pretty content with a wash of color on my lids and a coat of mascara, occasionally adding a second shade and/or liquid liner. I had a lot of fun trying my hand at doing something I don't normally do with my eye looks with this challenge. A huge "thank you" @danielledanielle for your creativity with this challenge. 👏 And a "thank you" to folks for their inspirational looks and thoughtful and supportive comments. 😍

Re: BALETTE ROYALE: Showdown of the Shadows

That palette is so gorgeous on you @itsfi

Re: BALETTE ROYALE: Showdown of the Shadows

Awww, thank you @PrettyPaint! This Stora Dolls quad has been a good one for me, for every day looks as well as other, special events/occasion looks. Would you believe this is the first YSL eyeshadow I've worn, or worn with any regularity? I don't recall whether I owned one of their previous quint eyeshadow palettes; I know I've admired them. Except for the last couple of years, most of the YSL beauties in my collection have been of their lip products (not surprising, I know 😂), foundation and the Touche Eclat concealer they were so famous for.

Re: BALETTE ROYALE: Showdown of the Shadows

@itsfi I've never own a quint from them either, but thanks to you I know what my first one will be. It looks so versatile.

Re: BALETTE ROYALE: Showdown of the Shadows

I love how versatile it is @PrettyPaint; a little surprised too, with this being one of their more neutral palettes, but that sparkly shade can really add some extra oomph to an eye look. 😍 I wouldn't have even known that but for this challenge. 👍

Re: BALETTE ROYALE: Showdown of the Shadows

@itsfi I love both of these looks!

Re: BALETTE ROYALE: Showdown of the Shadows

@makeitup305, thank you; they turned out better than expected.

Re: BALETTE ROYALE: Showdown of the Shadows

Down to the wire finish @itsfi !

A part of me is tempted to do this again, like another version, but I also enjoyed this as is.  How are we all feeling about an annual battle? 🤔 Or should we let this be?

@itsfi @CynthieLu @haleyvvvv @Mellmars1185 @makeitup305 @AMK721 @greeneyedgirl107 @Sunnysmom

Also, didn't do a tally yet, but I think we all were witness to the versatility of Tiny Marvels without saying.  What a great palette, TY Mel Thompson🙏🏽

Re: BALETTE ROYALE: Showdown of the Shadows

@danielledanielle I feel bad I missed the last two weeks. First I was sick, then it was shark week (iykyk).

I really enjoyed the challenge and trying to come up with new looks using the same palette. The hardest part for me was sticking to the same palette. I tend to do my makeup based on my mood and sometimes the shades I had didn’t fit. I also feel guilty neglecting my other preciousness lol.

I think it would be cool to do a take on a Balette where you pick two palettes per week and try do as many looks with each palette as you can (at least 1 with each). At the end of the week, you can pick a winner and ask BIC members to vote on a favorite as well. The next week pick two new palettes or bring the previous winner. It could be bracket style or sudden death.

Re: BALETTE ROYALE: Showdown of the Shadows

Gimme gimme that feedback @makeitup305

I wanted something more bracket like, and possibly contentious 😂, but couldn't figure out the how.  Like I wanted to palettes against each other, but it's hard to know who has what and if they wanted to do 5+ looks.  Plus, I wondered if anyone lurking would want to patrticipate.

I get the neglect/fatigue, but I do think it was a good thing to stick with one for as long as you could, especially if you were trying to pan it.  I never would've thought I get all those looks out of my Fenty Snap Shadow.  If we did this bracket, Maybe two palettes for the same duration with one safety you could rotate in and out? 🤔

Also, I was bummed you and @lmaster ( @Sunnysmom , too) were sick.  But, I am glad for what you did....everything and anything you gave 😊,  you definitely killed it.

Re: BALETTE ROYALE: Showdown of the Shadows

@danielledanielle I think you have done an amazing job with this challenge and you all have been so creative and fun with them. I’m sure whatever you conjure up next whether it’s small or bigger will be next level as well!

🥰

Re: BALETTE ROYALE: Showdown of the Shadows

@danielledanielle Sounds like a great idea! Sorry I wasn't able to participate. But if there is another challenge, I am definitely open to it!😊

Re: BALETTE ROYALE: Showdown of the Shadows

Making a note to self @danielledanielle -

Self, keep the nail art stencils.

😂🤣😂

This was fun and pushed me outside my comfort zone. I really enjoyed seeing how everyone went about the showdown and the looks! I'm down for doing an annual battle, if your creative brain wants to put something together.

Re: BALETTE ROYALE: Showdown of the Shadows

@itsfi love those eye looks!  Tried to heart ur post and add the quad to my loves, but couldn't.

Re: BALETTE ROYALE: Showdown of the Shadows

I love this interaction between

@greeneyedgirl107-> @itsfi , it's essentially

  1. I love what you did
  2. I cannot enable myself appropriately
  3. Oh no, we must address this, I love this for you

Re: BALETTE ROYALE: Showdown of the Shadows

@danielledanielle 💕 💞 ♥️

Re: BALETTE ROYALE: Showdown of the Shadows

Hahahaha @danielledanielle! I tried to show restraint. I was going to say that if you can't add it to your wishlist / loves list, add it to your cart. 🛒 Hee hee hee. 😅  It really is a beautiful and versatile neutral-to-cool leaning beige/taupe/brown eyeshadow palette @greeneyedgirl107. If you prefer something warmer, the YSL Over Brun quad is worth taking a look into. I'm told they're different enough that you could warrant both. I've swatched Over Brun and that is true, but I don't want to enable. <<if only there was an emoji to capture my expression after saying that>>
