CURRENT MAKEUP CAPSULE THEME:
Upcoming Makeup Capsule Themes: [Updated 12.21.2024] Take a sneak peek at the weekly themes to come.

What is a capsule makeup collection?
A capsule makeup collection is a selection of makeup products that can be used to put together different looks for a variety of occasions. For some of us, that may mean a group of essential products for your everyday look plus a few extra items for a more glam or dramatic look; and, for others of us, that may mean, a lineup of our holy grail product(s) in each makeup category. My ideal capsule makeup collection probably falls somewhere in between - we'll (hopefully) find out at the end of the year! I don't see myself as a minimalist, but I don't have an extensive collection of makeup either. I appreciate the collections of people who fall within both camps but I float somewhere in between - on the one hand, my brow product collection would earn a gold star if we were using a minimalist approach to makeup; my lip product lineup, on the other hand, would not. 🤣 It would most definitely not.
Why have a capsule makeup collection?
Everyone will have their own reasons for having (or not having) a more streamlined makeup collection. Over the years, I've just become more interested in having less beauty products on hand (well, except for lip products, lol) - a handful of items I use or reach for more frequently with maybe a few additional products that are go-to's for me for special events or occasions. Don't get me wrong, I love trying new products and I don't see that changing. I just like the idea of having a simpler collection (I appreciate that "simpler" can be relative), curated to my needs and lifestyle.
Why weekly?
A few years ago, beauty & lifestyle blogger Serein Wu, did a weekly series (on her blog and YouTube channel), Makeup Bag Monday, where she rotated her makeup bag each week with new product launches and makeup already in her collection. Every Monday, she shared the products she selected for the upcoming week and provided detailed makeup reviews on the makeup she used for the previous week. I may not post detailed reviews, but will at least try to include a weekly recap (probably at the end of the week) of what products I like and which ones didn't work for me. If weekly works for you, great. If not, feel free to join in based on what works best for you.
What if I don't have enough products to fit the theme for a full face?
No need for your entire makeup capsule to fit the weekly theme(s). Just one will do. And, even if you don't have one that fits squarely within a theme, feel free to post your makeup capsule. We'd love to see what you're using and hear your feedback on the products as you put them to use.
Auh-mazing declutters this month! @itsfi I love how committed you are too decluttering your stash and rehoming products that missed the mark for you. 🩵🎁 It's so respectable and kinder for the environment than just ending up in the trash. 15 is a huge number of re-homes! 🎉🎉
@CynthieLu, thank you. I'm really trying to make a good effort of using what I have and not have to completely toss everything if I don't have to - I know that I will have to, but just trying to maximize ways to donate or gift products that don't work for me or that I won't end up using.
It's hard to find the right someone sometimes @itsfi, I share a lot with my niece and sisters, but it's mostly samples. My collection really isn't the biggest. 😅
And I totally am on board with trying to use what we have. These challenges work out great for that. 😉 There's alot of fun rotating in new things and creating new combos and finding new ways to enjoy what we have.
My big moto this year is have fun and "don't save the good stuff, use the good stuff." Another BIC'r mentioned that and it rang so true. I'm using things I had been saving for special occasions etc.. everyday is a gift 🎁
And use up what I have, move through my products and don't open too many at a time 😉.. and not worry about getting back ups. I find it I get a back up, I don't feel I have the space to try new things.
Monthly Capsule Roundup!
These are some of the main products I was working on this month, though not all. I didn't include eyeshadow or most lippies since I switch those daily, usually. Counterclockwise from left to right:
Looking forward to focusing on a bunch of new products in April!
Omg, I love that the PMG leaves glitter all over! I also love that BB puff as a notorious non-powdered/setter, such an odd thing that I think I bought in the checkout line at Anthropologie of all places. 💗💗 @makeitup305
@sister13 the BB is such a great product. I like the non-velour side for retouching, as well. I picked up 2 more during the Ulta sale, when they brought them back one last day. I personally don't love the leftover glitter of the PMG but maybe I need to try topping it off with a gloss. I bet that would look lovely.
@makeitup305 Love the reviews! I picked up the Kulfi concealer after you likened it to the Natasha Denona HyGlam. I'm enjoying testing it out, but I'm still thinking I prefer the ND, for a reason I can't pinpoint.
Is the HG palette the cream trio?
@missjeanie I think I like the ND a little more as well. I think because it's so hydrating it looks more brightening and plumping, almost. The Kulfi is more of a natural finish. It's the Hourglass Illume Sheer Color Trio . I've had it for years. I still really like it but I'm kind of over it for now. So many great cream formulas have come out since this did that I find myself reaching for other products more. Idk why HG never did more shades of this or revamped it.
@makeitup305 I thought it was the HG Cream Trio. I've seen a few people use it here and there and they were always complimentary but it never got much love. I suspect because like you say... just the one colour way. And yes... so many wonderful creams these days. I love it! Do you have a current favourite formula for cream blush?
Thank you for this great round @makeitup305 😀 I love seeing what everyone is using. I want to know a bit more on your HG palette. Is that a face palette?
I'm excited to see what products you swap in for April.
@CynthieLu it's the Hourglass Illume Sheer Color Trio . It came out years ago. I like it but I have other stuff I'm more excited to use these days. I swapped in a bunch of other cream products- Nudestix blushes, some Kevin Aucoin cream sticks I picked up over the holidays, and a Tarte cream bronzer. I also grabbed some other concealers and foundations. I tend to set aside products I want to incorporate more and then pick through my collection to supplement what I got. I'm also working through my lipstick purgatory box from my declutter from this month. I'm keepig an Excel sheet of all the eyeshadow palettes I'm using this year so those get rotated almost daily.
Ohhhh, those Tom Ford blush & highlighter duos were great @makeitup305!
I love the idea of products like the I’m Meme highlighter and contour duo stick but my experience with them, regardless of brand, is that one is great and the other off. Was there a brand that allowed you to mix and match? I feel like there was a while back, but at the same time, that could just be wishful thinking on my part!
@itsfi Idk maybe? I know Dibs beauty has one with a bronzer and a blush one either side with a ton of shades, but I haven't tried it. It looks great, though! The problem with highlighter is that it has a pearl not really a shimmer so when it starts to fade it's just specks of glitter. Not too noticeable unless you look for it but not idea.
PSA - Hey BIC!
Next week (April 1 - 7), we have The "Do Over" or "Take 2" Makeup Capsule but I realized we've gone through a lot of capsules over the last 3 months, so I've included a quick summary of our previous 13+ capsule themes / prompts in the spoiler below, as well as a link to the below list in the original post.
Past Makeup Capsule Collection Challenge Themes:
It'll be fun to see what theme everyone chooses to re-do. Or, perhaps, you'll mix-and-match a couple or more themes for your makeup capsule this week?
@itsfi ive been a silent participant for the last few weeks because things are crazy at home, but loving this chance to try one that ive missed!! The fast and furious one is right up my alley this week, as we are travelling and i packed in a hurry…. Not only will the looks be fast and furious, but the selection was too!
@cianni, always so good to hear from you! How was baby's first Easter?!! Safe and happy travels to you. Will keep an eye out to see what you packed and hear how it performed.
RECAP - Week 13 (March 25 - 31) - The Fast & Furious / Quick & Easy Makeup Capsule
With the Easter holiday, I'm here with an early check-in for the last week of March. There was one adjustment I made to my capsule this week, to account for allergies and acne - ack! 😣 I subbed out the Yves Saint Laurent Lash Clash Extreme Volume Mascara Noir as my eyes were irritated and watery. In its place came the Armani Beauty Power Fabric + Longwear Matte Concealer , a tried-and-true OG, to mask an unsightly zit that popped up. I have been very disappointed by this turn of events as I was doing pretty well when it came to controlling my breakouts. Alas, such is life and such is the nature of my skin in spring.
This was a fun capsule week - had a great time doing a collab with the fabulous @danielledanielle and @sister13 ❣️ No new additions to the Top Shelf and no declutters this week. Will be back after the Easter holiday to post about March declutters as well as to share my Week 14 makeup capsule, which should have something for everyone - The "Do Over" or "Take 2" Makeup Capsule. Have a favorite cspsule theme from the last 13 weeks? Or did you miss out on taking part in one? Here's your chance for a "do over"; - whether to repeat a past capsule or to re-do it, with modifcations based on lessons learned, or to add new products, or to make changes due to seasonal shifts.
Sorry to hear you had to battle some allergies @itsfi.
I hope it was nothing too serious. 🩵 Glad to hear you had fun with your capsule this week, it felt like the most adventurous I think, trying to use less, complete a face in record time. 😉 It was a fun experience. (thank you!)
@CynthieLu, it was a challenge on top of a challenge! Great to hear you had fun!
Allergies were not so bad, more that they took me by surprise. It was windy and rained here and that isn't typically when my allergies strike, but the wind picked up the pollen from other parts and blew in on over so there were many days when my eyes were watery. Fortunately, that was it and I didn't experience itchy or swollen eyes.
I thought this posted yesterday!
Yesterday’s 4.5 minute face - no cheating, even I was impressed with myself! Some of the stuff was still out from the day before, but also new items, including a random Marc Jacobs nude lipstick, one of very few nudes that works on me. I was rushing for a zoom call at 11, haha, cutting it a little close. The pic I of my face is from after the call though.
Some of these items are definitely in my "5-minute capsule" i.e. the Fenty Beauty by Rihanna Eaze Drop Stick Blur + Smooth Tint Stick Foundation because I don't need a concealer, and the Benefit Cosmetics BADgal BANG! Volumizing Mascara Intense Pitch Black because it goes on fast and one coat will do. The Gucci Gucci Crayon Définition Sourcils Eyebrow Pencil is nice because it's not too soft, but still pigmented and it's easy to remember which side is the pencil and which side is the spoolie.
The tarte timeless™ smoothing & blurring face primer 0.5 oz/ 14.2 g is the only thing that fills the large pores on my nose and stays put throughout the day. I realize I didn't use the LYS bronzer stick on my face in the morning (I added it later) so ignore that in the pic below. Anyway, this is X-posted to Sephora Six - Fast & Furious Edition and Re: Makeup Challenge of the Week 2021/2022/2023 with a pic of my face included! 🙂
I love your makeup tray @sister13 it's makes for beautiful product shots. 🤩🤩 Congratulations, that's amazing time!
