Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge 2024

Hello, BIC Beauties! If the idea of makeup capsules piques your curiosity, or you're interested in seeing what's in the beauty collection or weekly makeup bag of your fellow BIC beauties, jump right on in - with questions, comments or a capsule of your own to share.

To add a fun take on putting together a makeup capsule, I've included theme(s) for the weekly capsule - some weeks, I have enough products in my stash (eek!) to make a whole capsule based on the prompt; other weeks, I have just one or two items that fit neatly within theme.

What is a capsule makeup collection?  

A capsule makeup collection is a selection of makeup products that can be used to put together different looks for a variety of occasions. For some of us, that may mean a group of essential products for your everyday look plus a few extra items for a more glam or dramatic look; and, for others of us, that may mean, a lineup of our holy grail product(s) in each makeup category. My ideal capsule makeup collection probably falls somewhere in between - we'll (hopefully) find out at the end of the year! I don't see myself as a minimalist, but I don't have an extensive collection of makeup either. I appreciate the collections of people who fall within both camps but I float somewhere in between - on the one hand, my brow product collection would earn a gold star if we were using a minimalist approach to makeup; my lip product lineup, on the other hand, would not. 🤣 It would most definitely not.  

Why have a capsule makeup collection?  

Everyone will have their own reasons for having (or not having) a more streamlined makeup collection. Over the years, I've just become more interested in having less beauty products on hand (well, except for lip products, lol) - a handful of items I use or reach for more frequently with maybe a few additional products that are go-to's for me for special events or occasions.  Don't get me wrong, I love trying new products and I don't see that changing. I just like the idea of having a simpler collection (I appreciate that "simpler" can be relative), curated to my needs and lifestyle.

Why weekly? 
A few years ago, beauty & lifestyle blogger Serein Wu, did a weekly series (on her blog and YouTube channel), Makeup Bag Monday, where she rotated her makeup bag each week with new product launches and makeup already in her collection. Every Monday, she shared the products she selected for the upcoming week and provided detailed makeup reviews on the makeup she used for the previous week. I may not post detailed reviews, but will at least try to include a weekly recap (probably at the end of the week) of what products I like and which ones didn't work for me.  If weekly works for you, great. If not, feel free to join in based on what works best for you.

What if I don't have enough products to fit the theme for a full face?

No need for your entire makeup capsule to fit the weekly theme(s). Just one will do. And, even if you don't have one that fits squarely within a theme, feel free to post your makeup capsule. We'd love to see what you're using and hear your feedback on the products as you put them to use.

@CynthieLu and @missjeanie - I've found that I've learned something every challenge even if it doesn't end up being something I want to do or recreate again. @sister13 Agreed!!  I think it's fun to stretch a bit every once and a while.  i very easily get into a make up rut of just using the same things over and over again without thought behind it early in the morning. All the challenges are forcing me to break away from that, and for that I'm excited!

@missjeanie I'm with you on doing a full face. Even if I'm doing more minimal makeup, it's just lighter coverage products not necessarily less lol I feel like when I do less, my face looks out of balance, if that makes sense. I have so many gorgeous products I feel bad not using them lol

Nice  recap! I ended up with over 30 with only a couple days notice, so I hear you on the hectic Easter, though it all turned out well.  I love doing a full face but (almost) the only time I have time is in the evening (when I’m not going anywhere, lol) or on the weekends. Haha, it was a lot, but ultimately we were glad to host my husband's rugby team - a lot of them are here from other states and countries, so they are away from their families, and everyone brought food, too, so we had a great time!  Hats off to you for your group, too! @missjeanie

March 2024 Makeup Capsule Declutters

Even though I didn't meet my weekly target of decluttering at least one product every week, March was an overall good month for decluttering or re-homing products from my makeup capsules.

Thank you @Mellmars1185. I'm a little nervous about what my final declutter numbers will be at the end of the year. I thought I had done a good job and passing along things pre-renovations but I think I just got good at packing things away, unintentionally. Or, maybe I was intentional about it at the time I packed it. 😂🤣😂 I can see that, actually. Whoops. In any event, at the end the year, there will be products that have new homes and I will have a smaller (it won't be small by most standards), a smaller collection with less products never having been opened. That's the plan.

@itsfiAny progress towards your goal is good progress in my opinion ☺️. I haven't been doing the greatest on my low buy. I think my collection may have grown 🤭

I feel like with no / low buys it can be so dependent on what is released as well. It ebbs and flows, right @Mellmars1185. Some days, weeks, months we're really good and others, we slip up. Just have to regroup and try again. I'm hitting pause for the sale but will try to be good about not overdoing it. Then, it's low / low(er) buy through the summer. I've been pretty good the last couple of years with not picking up too many things during the summer so I'm hoping I can keep up with that trend. Foundtions, lipsticks and skincare have traditionally been hard ones for me to pass up, but the last few years it's been made clear to me that my skin does well with a consistent, "less is more" routine, especially in the warmer seasons so I think I will be better at not buying a lot of skincare and using what I have. Foundations and lipsticks ... well, I think I may need to line up what I have as a reminder that I don't need more. 🤣

Awww, thank you @missjeanie! I'm trying to think outside the box to find new homes for a lot of the extra that I have as well as the things that don't work for me or that I know won't work for me. Hoping I can keep it up through the end of the year or earlier if I'm able to pare down my stash!
