What is a capsule makeup collection?
A capsule makeup collection is a selection of makeup products that can be used to put together different looks for a variety of occasions. For some of us, that may mean a group of essential products for your everyday look plus a few extra items for a more glam or dramatic look; and, for others of us, that may mean, a lineup of our holy grail product(s) in each makeup category. My ideal capsule makeup collection probably falls somewhere in between - we'll (hopefully) find out at the end of the year! I don't see myself as a minimalist, but I don't have an extensive collection of makeup either. I appreciate the collections of people who fall within both camps but I float somewhere in between - on the one hand, my brow product collection would earn a gold star if we were using a minimalist approach to makeup; my lip product lineup, on the other hand, would not. 🤣 It would most definitely not.
Why have a capsule makeup collection?
Everyone will have their own reasons for having (or not having) a more streamlined makeup collection. Over the years, I've just become more interested in having less beauty products on hand (well, except for lip products, lol) - a handful of items I use or reach for more frequently with maybe a few additional products that are go-to's for me for special events or occasions. Don't get me wrong, I love trying new products and I don't see that changing. I just like the idea of having a simpler collection (I appreciate that "simpler" can be relative), curated to my needs and lifestyle.
Why weekly?
A few years ago, beauty & lifestyle blogger Serein Wu, did a weekly series (on her blog and YouTube channel), Makeup Bag Monday, where she rotated her makeup bag each week with new product launches and makeup already in her collection. Every Monday, she shared the products she selected for the upcoming week and provided detailed makeup reviews on the makeup she used for the previous week. I may not post detailed reviews, but will at least try to include a weekly recap (probably at the end of the week) of what products I like and which ones didn't work for me. If weekly works for you, great. If not, feel free to join in based on what works best for you.
What if I don't have enough products to fit the theme for a full face?
No need for your entire makeup capsule to fit the weekly theme(s). Just one will do. And, even if you don't have one that fits squarely within a theme, feel free to post your makeup capsule. We'd love to see what you're using and hear your feedback on the products as you put them to use.
Week 7/Lunar New Year recap
Laura Mercier Lunar New Year Translucent Loose Setting Powder + Velour Puff - I opened this one for the challenge. If I have used an LM setting powder in the past, it has been too long for me to remember much about it. I really liked how mattifying and blurring this one was and it locked my makeup into place. Lately setting powder has been a must for me and this one did not disappoint. I have been using the Givenchy setting powder and this one is up there with it. Not sure if I will be replacing it but I needed the LNY edition.
Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez Soft Pinch Liquid Blush Love - Such a beautiful shade. I underpainting a lot with this shade because I wanted to have a natural flushed look. I am going to try mixing this formula soon with the Rare liquid highlighter (recommended by @danielledanielle for a more seemless blend).
Kérastase Nutritive 8H Magic Night Serum Hydrating Treatment for Dry Hair 3.04 oz / 90 ml - this was a new to me product. I only ended up using near the end of the week. I have a feeling I will be purchasing a full size based on my experience so far. I ended up putting this on my naturally air dried hair after day two from washing. It is scented and I really enjoyed the scent. It made my day 2 hair smell clean again. I left it in for another day and a half, went out with it in a ponytail and finally washed out. It did not leave my hair feeling greasy at all. Next, I am going to use this on my ends at the same time I apply hair oil to my scalp and see how it preforms. More to come on this one.
Hourglass Unlocked Instant Extensions Lengthening Mascara - Another new to me item for the challenge. There was a bit of a learning curve for me with this item because I was not used to the formula. @CynthieLu gave me some tips to apply it gently to the lashes. I figured it out mid-week and I am really enjoying it. This is one of the first mascaras I have been able to apply to my bottom lashes, without it transferring. I have been loving the effect. Nothing to be decluttered this week. Below are a few items that arrived this week during the challenge that I added in.
Two Nars LNY items:
Eyeshadow Quad in St Paul De Vence - This is a wearable, everyday palette.
NARS Powermatte Long-Lasting Lipstick Start Me Up - 116 (LYN Edition)
I'm so happy you got the hang of the HG Mascara 🙌 @Mellmars1185 Good job! 🌠
You know what I like alot about it unexpectedly? How easily it washes off 😉
@CynthieLu You are right! I didn't notice that until you mentioned it. On Sunday evening I went to my sister's and ended up staying the night. I used a makeup wipe to take off my mascara and I didn't have racoon eyes in the morning like I normally would.
Such a great week for you with these incredible products @Mellmars1185 ❣️ You got the NARS LNY palette & lipstick? They’re gorgeous!!! 😍 Oh, Laura Mercier setting powder brings back memories - that packaging is stunning! The LM powder was my first ever setting powder.
Isn’t the Kerastase 8H serum amazing?!! It’s a 🐐 GOAT product for me. Loooove! ♥️
@itsfi Thank you! I saw someone use the Nars palette and lippie. They looks so beautiful on the influencer. I was sold. The Kerastase is amazing! How do you use it?
I’m glad you picked it up @Mellmars1185; I think it will look beautiful on you. I’ll live vicariously through you. I hemmed and hawed over it but ultimately decided I shouldn’t. I haven’t really gotten to all my eyeshadow palettes so I need to do that first, and before I do, I need to make more of a dent in my ND Biba palette - I feel like since this is going to be my last year of having Biba in the pan it! challenge, I need to give it some attention.
The Kerastase usually gets put to use at the end of Day 2 or Day 3 hair (Day 2 in the peak of summer when my scalp and hair tend to get oilier faster). It revives my hair overnight. 😍 Sometimes in the summer, I will need to follow up with a dry shampoo at the crown in the mornings, if my hair / scalp is extra oily. It’s one of those products that just performs well time and time again. It’s a repeated repurchase, either on its own or in a set. Kerastase has some great hair care.
@itsfi Thank you. There are definitely a lot of palettes I need to work through before I should buy anymore. Your last year of Biba? Watching you use it has been eye opening to how long it takes to get through a palette. I definitely need to make some visible dents.
Thanks for sharing your routine with the Kerastase. It truly sounds lovely.
Yeah; this is year 5 with ND Biba being part of the pan it! challenge for me. That first year, the pan it! thread, Biba, @ElleElleG and all of the panners were exactly what I needed - kept me sane when the whole world seemed like anything but. I would get fully dressed, business casual (more on the business side than the casual) and I would do my eye makeup with Biba every day; every. day. And sometimes on the weekends too!! lol
It was (and still is) very eye opening how long it takes to hit pan. Yes, there’s a lot of product on the ND shadows but it takes a lot of use to work your way through one. I have 2 more shadows to hit pan on and another 2 that I’ve already hit pan but I want to try to fully pan. That feels like a good note to retire ND Biba on (or to at least make an effort towards), so I’ll keep using for the Biba palette when I can during the challenge and when it doesn’t fit neatly into a prompt, I’ll just sub it in once a week, to keep giving it some love. It’ll be weird not having it in my routine, that’s for sure @Mellmars1185.
Week 8 - The "BIC Inspired" Makeup Capsule
This was a hard capsule to put together, because there have been so many BIC enabled and inspired purchases over the years. So. Many. Here are the ones that make up this week's capsule. Product detail in the spoiler sections.
Face:
Primer (Face): | Rotating between
Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez Mini Pore Diffusing Primer- Always An Optimist Collection 0.50 oz./15 mL
, which @missjeanie has said good things about, and Victoria Beckham Beauty Priming Moisturizer (Golden), a product that has grown on me after giving it a second chance following @Sunnysmom's raves about it. This is my second bottle of it, or maybe it's my 3rd? |
Foundation: | Depending on what my days look like this week, I'll opt for (1)
SEPHORA COLLECTION Best Skin Ever Liquid Foundation
a product that @JoSometimes likes; (2)
Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place 24-Hour Longwear Foundation 2N2 Buff
, a favorite among many in BIC, and for good reason - this stuff lasts all day; or (3) MERIT The Minimalist Perfecting Complexion Foundation and Concealer Stick Linen (not pictured), an oldie but goodie and one that spoken highly of by @Mcakes and @ather when Merit first launched at Sephora. |
Concealer: |
SEPHORA COLLECTION Best Skin Ever Full Coverage Multi-Use Hydrating Concealer 11.5P
# - a little goes a long way with this full coverage concealer, a gratis from @TeamBIC a couple of years. |
Cheeks: | @melissapurple22 has posted some beautiful looks to the Gallery wearing different Nudestix pencils, a great reminder to pull out the ones I have - the
NUDESTIX Mini NUDIES Roses 'N Honey Nudes 3pc Kit
is super convenient and the stix are easy to use |
Setting Powder / Spray: | After seeing and hearing @ather use
LAWLESS Skin-Smoothing Talc-Free Perfecting Powder
(not pictured) in a previous capsule, it reminded me that I have one in my stash that could / should be put to use and voila, here we are! I'll alternate the Lawless powder with a product that @jaaayp has spoken highly of - #caliray Surfproof Hydrating Setting Spray with Niacinamide 3.4 oz / 100 mL . It appears that the Sephora stores here no longer provide fragrance samples (is that true elsewhere?), but I was able to talk a castmember into making me a sample of the setting spray in the small plastic containers they put skincare and makeup samples in. I will pour this into one of those mini perfume sample vials that Sephora used to give out - my own little spray sample. A little MacGyver action on my part. 😉 |
Eyes:
Primer (Eye): | Sticking with the
PAT McGRATH LABS IntensifEYES™ Longwear Eyeshadow Primer IntensifEYES™ Longwear Primary
again this week. Its a "BIC inspired" product ~ inspired by Sephoria NYC |
Eyeshadow: | A few options for shadows this week - (1) these 3 shadows from Natasha Denona Biba All Neutral Eyeshadow Palette Full Size Biba Neutral Eyeshadow Palette, inspired by the Pan It! - 2024 Challenge; (2) Chanel 388 Ec;at de Nuit Eyeshadow Quad (I was inspired enabled to pick this beauty up after seeing @TraceyEB post a stunning look wearing it and the Chanel eyeliner; and (3)
Armani Beauty Eye Tint Long-Lasting Liquid Eyeshadow 18M Beige
, inspired by a look @Samtian posted a while back on the 100 eyeshadows thread using another shade from this range. |
Eye Liner: | This week is about options and eyeliners are no exception. I'll switch back and forth between (1)
Danessa Myricks Beauty Linework Paintbrush Fluid Liquid Eyeliner 0.034 oz / 1 ml

Kaja Wink Stamp Original Waterproof Wing Eyeliner Stamp & Pen Original Ink Black

Summer Fridays Lip Butter Balm for Hydration & Shine
(@ather) |
Lip Stick: | Choices, always love having choices when it comes to lipsticks - for this week, my choices will be to choose from:
Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution Hydrating Lipstick Super Fabulous
(@Mellmars1185);
PAT McGRATH LABS MatteTrance™ Lipstick - Divine Rose Collection Divine Rose
(@cianni);
HAUS LABS BY LADY GAGA Le Monster Lip Crayon Vegan Lipstick and Lip Liner Mauve Matte
(@Loretta55); Chanel Ultrawear Liquid Lip Color 112 Chic Rosewood (after seeing @blackkitty2014 post an update on a Chanel lipstick to the Pan It! Challenge, I knew I had to include at least one Chanel in this week's capsule); and, inspired by one of my pan projects this year,
Westman Atelier Lip Suede Lipstick Palette Les Nudes
. |
Lip Liner: | This week's choices consist of
Gucci Long Lasting Bold Lip Liner
(enabled by @heartsmyface) and SEPHORA COLLECTION Retractable Rouge Gel Lip Liner 29 dressed to the 90s, made famous by@Saradestin. |
All these beauties will be stored this week in one of the best bags around -
I'm excited to see what BIC inspired products made it to everyone's capsule this week. I have a feeling my wish list for the spring sale will get even longer.
@itsfi Great picks!!! I’m glad I was able to inspire you with SF lip butter balm! You are definitely right Rhode is my number one now! But I’ll always have a place for the SF one!
I love lip balms @ather! 🩷 Rhode & Summer Fridays are definitely in the top tier for faves. I’ve gotten better over the years at just sticking to my fave brands, though some new to me brands or new flavors from other brands do make their way into my stash. In my defense, it’s not nearly as many or as often as before. 😝
Wow @itsfi this is such an elaborate capsule and honored to be included! I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. If you don't, plz don't hate me hehehehehe. Love your cleverness, next thing you know, you're making your own setting sprays and calling it the fi 😂
If you ever get there, lemme know, I'll be your first customer 🤭
@jaaayp, I’ve been going back and forth with having a smaller, more streamlined capsule and having a more elaborate, robust one like this week. It sorta just depends on how I’m feeling and the theme. With the latter, I can try more products and tend to have more products to declutter. With the former, smaller capsules, it sometimes shows which products I really enjoy, are HG for me.
I’ve whittled down my skincare collection over the years, and this capsule challenge is my way of trying to whittle down my makeup collection (along with low / no buys). I’m fairly certain that what I ultimately end up with will be more than what most people have (maybe not more than what most people here have) and that’s okay. It’ll be less than what I have now and hopefully be products I reach for more often. It’s fascinating how I can accumulate so much stuff.
Oh, there will be no hate with the caliray. Products work differently on everyone, and it can depend on a variety of factors, like skin type, how and when you use something. And sometimes, it just doesn’t agree with a person. All good.
I think that's awesome @itsfi ! This makes perfect sense to me because I declutter my collection pretty frequently and donate/share with friends and family on beauty items that doesn't add value to me but may be enjoyed by others!
I try to practice minimalism which is hard when you're obsessed with beauty products but I have to remind myself that if I don't reach for it, I probably don't need it. I think the society often tells us more is more but the amount/number of products shouldn't bring you happiness but your assessement of the product quality ($1 eyeliner can be more valuable than $100 eyeliner).
I recently also started practicing the habit of returning products that I do not like vs thinking I'll use it one day 😂
I chuckled at your comment about "maybe not more than what most people here have" 😂
So true @jaaayp, there’s a bit of a struggle with being a minimalist and being a fan of beauty products. I fall in between, leaning closer in the last few years towards being more minimalist (operative words there are “leaning towards”) when it comes to at least certain beauty products. Other items it’s questionable whether I understand the definition of minimal - hello, foundation, lip products of any sort, eyeshadow, serums, nail polish, etc, etc. 😝 But it’s a work in progress. Which is where the capsules have come in handy. I try being very selective on what gets the “Top Shelf” designation and I try to be very honest about what should be decluttered. Sure, I can rationalize keeping something but most, not all, of the time, I know what will or should be tossed, donated or given to a better home.
💯 agree, quality over quantity. I like that my main collection of things I love and use regularly consists of products from different brands and fall within varying price points. I have skincare and makeup from affordable and awesome Kbeauty and drugstore brands and from splendidly splurgetastic luxury brands and designer houses. What they have in common is that they have a track record of performing well for my skin and I’m good with the price point, whatever they may be (though my wallet wouldn’t mind if they be less jarring on it).
How often do you declutter? Do you have a schedule or particular times during the year when you take stock of your stash and declutter? Or is it more when the mood suits you?
Amen! I agree with you 100% that its always WIP because there will always be something new.. also 100% agree on price points on product as well 🥰
Idk if I ever shared my "topshelf" makeup on the threads. I literally keep a clear/acrylic box on top of my bathroom counter (I'm thinking that's my capsule 🤔) which includes all my favorite makeup and a tiny (imo) skincare fridge for my skincare while the rest of my makeup/skincare sits in one (couple) of my bathroom drawers (my second shelf but still love and will look for...). I truly do think I used to own a mini sephora in my house at one point in time but somewhere down the line, I started to realize I don't reach for these things and they become these like.... quiet memories of money burned LOL (who needs like 5 mega pallets of neutral browns??)
I declutter every month or when I make a new purchase. Sad, but true. I shouldn't even be purchasing enough products to declutter every month but somehow I accumulate multiple of same type of products or come to realize I don't love them (which is why i stopped by lipsticks and only purchase lip stains because i just dont use it no matter how pretty the shade). Most go to friends and family often as it has just opened and maybe a little used (unless for hygienic purposes, I have to toss). I try to make somewhat of smarter purchases now, life if I'm running out, I'll buy something new. No one needs 3 open bottles of Niacinamide 🙃
@jaaayp, I store the products I declutter (or donate or give to friends) from this challenge in an acrylic bin, and having been doing the same with my Top Shelf or GOAT items too, so twinsies there. Ordinarily, I’d pitch the declutters in real time but with these capsules, I’ve been doing it at the end of the month. And making sure to do that, to minimize the likelihood that I’ll bring something back into the stash. Nooooo!!!
I’ve also been making sure that with products I’m opening for the first time for a capsule, that I pull product from the container and apply it first to mixing palette tray and use a separate applicator to apply the product to my face. That way if I don’t like it or it doesn’t work for me, it’s as clean as possible when I give it away or donate it.
That’s great that you’ve stopped picking up lip gloss and lipstick since you know it doesn’t work for you. I’ve been trying to stick to only the things I know I’ll go through or that I’ll start to use fairly quickly within it arriving. I’ll give myself some leeway during the spring sale but after that, probably going back to a low/no buy for most of the summer, which is fine as I have in the past tended to purchase less items then. Fingers crossed that continues to be the case.
Very hygienic @itsfi I love your application and user methods! And yaaay twinsies!!! I agree with your shopping trends, I will most likely purchase less after the spring restock. (I say most likely because sometimes sephora does like special sales or promos that i just cant seem to resist). I used to buy like years makeup supply during the spring and years supply of skincare during the winter with exceptions of gifts and restocks but found that what ends up happening is I spend $$$ but continue to spent $ here and $$ there as products release which is probably most likely how I ended up with like 20+ products in my drawer that I haven't even opened yet!
hahahaha! Been there, done that @jaaayp! More times than I care to admit. It's amazing how easy it is to accumulate product during the year end / holiday sales. I'm going to try to be more strategic this year for both my no/low buys and the beauty products I do pick up.
Yes! I hope we can keep each other accountable @itsfi I think the pan it challenge will help a lot because im planning on really just replacing what I go through (I finish AHA Toner, I'll buy something AHA). I do want to be reasonable tho. Knowing me (maybe us?), I'll go no buy for couple months and then BAM 20+ products again 😂
lol @jaaayp , it's so easy to get carried away with hauls - if it's not one thing, like skincare, it's another, like a lip product. So many pretties to choose from, and then stack on a deal or sale ... 😱 The Pan It! - 2024 Challenge is great not just for working through product but eye opening for how long it takes to work through a product. Some people collect makeup so it makes sense that they're not looking to pan those items, but if there are products purchased for use, I've found the Pan It! challenge super helpful for accountability and it's a fun way to go about it.
It took a few tries for me to slow my roll on the holiday sales. I still partake but it's gotten better which I know is all relative. hahaha! I go through phases of no buys - sometimes it's on all beauty items unless I need to restock a product. Other times, most times, it's a no buy on certain categories of products, like hair care or nail polish, etc. And then I try to couple it with something for that category to help curb any urge to buy - so if it's nails that I'm trying to hold off on purchasing, I'll plan out some nail looks and pull polishes I might want to use for those mani's.
I love your approach to backfill what you've worked through. That's a very smart and doable way to go about it. Keeps your stash complete but gives you an opportunity to try something new if you want to look into another product.
