What is a capsule makeup collection?
A capsule makeup collection is a selection of makeup products that can be used to put together different looks for a variety of occasions. For some of us, that may mean a group of essential products for your everyday look plus a few extra items for a more glam or dramatic look; and, for others of us, that may mean, a lineup of our holy grail product(s) in each makeup category. My ideal capsule makeup collection probably falls somewhere in between - we'll (hopefully) find out at the end of the year! I don't see myself as a minimalist, but I don't have an extensive collection of makeup either. I appreciate the collections of people who fall within both camps but I float somewhere in between - on the one hand, my brow product collection would earn a gold star if we were using a minimalist approach to makeup; my lip product lineup, on the other hand, would not. 🤣 It would most definitely not.
Why have a capsule makeup collection?
Everyone will have their own reasons for having (or not having) a more streamlined makeup collection. Over the years, I've just become more interested in having less beauty products on hand (well, except for lip products, lol) - a handful of items I use or reach for more frequently with maybe a few additional products that are go-to's for me for special events or occasions. Don't get me wrong, I love trying new products and I don't see that changing. I just like the idea of having a simpler collection (I appreciate that "simpler" can be relative), curated to my needs and lifestyle.
Why weekly?
A few years ago, beauty & lifestyle blogger Serein Wu, did a weekly series (on her blog and YouTube channel), Makeup Bag Monday, where she rotated her makeup bag each week with new product launches and makeup already in her collection. Every Monday, she shared the products she selected for the upcoming week and provided detailed makeup reviews on the makeup she used for the previous week. I may not post detailed reviews, but will at least try to include a weekly recap (probably at the end of the week) of what products I like and which ones didn't work for me. If weekly works for you, great. If not, feel free to join in based on what works best for you.
What if I don't have enough products to fit the theme for a full face?
No need for your entire makeup capsule to fit the weekly theme(s). Just one will do. And, even if you don't have one that fits squarely within a theme, feel free to post your makeup capsule. We'd love to see what you're using and hear your feedback on the products as you put them to use.
It's my favorite of all the capsules @Mellmars1185. Everything from BIC loves, and it's all a fabulous time to use. 🥳🥳 I'm thrilled with this week's. 😀
@CynthieLu Great selection of some BIC and beauty in general all stars here. I have the KAYALI YUM PISTACHIO GELATO | 33 Eau de Parfum Intense Travel Spray and I think I may need to upgrade to a larger bottle soon. Smells so yummy!
It's so delicately delicious @missjeanie 💚 I don't think you'd regret it. I picked mine up during a fragrance multiplier. That's also a pretty good time to replenish the supply. 😉😉
@itsfi It is awesome you were able to complete a project and prepare your capsule(s) for the week. Do you find having the capsule helps you save time when getting ready? I love your determination with the Biba palette!
Thank you @Mellmars1185! The capsules have been really helpful for me - it saves times when getting ready in a couple of regards - one, I'm not staring at my stash wondering what to use - even if I choose to include a couple of similar products, it's an easier choice. Also, it's super convenient and efficient to have it all in one place. I'm not thrown off course because I can't find my <<insert product>> - it's seamless in terms of getting ready. 😃 I liken it to cooking - it all flows so much better when I have all my ingredients and tools in front of me, ready to use. How about you? Have the capsules been helpful? Worthwhile? Is there anything you would adjust?
I tend to have competing deadlines with projects, but this month, a lot of the large ones have converged all around the same time or within days of one another. So that makes it ... interesting. 😉 Putting the capsules together has been my "time out" on the weekend between taking care of project related items or other work things that also need to be done, and non-work related to do's. I've gotten better at mixing oldies-but-goodies with new-to-me products as well as tried-and-true 🐐 and ones I'm on the fence about, though that latter one hasn't really popped up too much in the last couple of weeks - having my makeup be something I know works and holds up helps a lot, both for how I look and how I feel, which is helpful when the work deadlines can be chaotic.
Habit stacking has been good with making sure I get to those non-work related to do's. Conceptually (and functionally, actually), having my makeup for the week all picked out helps the whole getting ready process more routinized and that's helpful when I have project deadlines. I have realized that I haven't done anything with styling my hair - it's just been brush it and put it in a clip. I'll try to work on that more this coming week, maybe aim to style my hair 3, maybe 4, out of the 7 days.
@itsfi That is amazing! Anytime that can be saved is super helpful, especially when you have deadlines coming up. I totally can relate to things coming in waves. I do find the capsules helpful during my work week. I kind of feel off track the past few weeks. I find I still get ready on time still, but I wasn't as rushed with my capsule picked out. I tended to veer outside of my capsule on the weekends when I had more time to play. For my hair, I tend to like to style it at night and clip it up at night. I leave myself 10 min to brush and touch up my hair in the morning. I really like my blow dry round brush for a quick touch up in the morning.
@Mellmars1185, what do you use to clip up your hair at night? Do you use the round brush on just your bangs or the length and ends of your hair as well?
@itsfi I use these types of clips for sleeping.
I honestly got used to sleeping with all kinds of clips because I put so much work into my hair (blow drying with a round brush), that I want it to look fresh in the morning. I am also a side/stomach sleeper so these don't bother me. They may not work for everyone. In the morning, I use the heated blow dryer just to touch up any area on my hair that may have a kink or have fallen flat. I also use it to curl my hair on day two hair.
Hmmm.... I have a couple of those types of clips. I've never thought about sleeping in them. I sleep on my side or my back. Will have to give them a try @Mellmars1185. I have been lucky with my hair styling when I do make an effort to style it - if I wash it and let it air dry completely at night, I can brush and curl it in 5-10 minutes the next morning; I just sometimes feel like I want to use those 5-10 minutes to sleep in.
@itsfi I totally understand about getting some extra sleep. I like the mornings when I wear my hair up. It saves so much time 😊
I love the time savers @Mellmars1185. I enjoy the results of a full face of makeup and find doing my makeup can be a nice way to relax too, but I'm mostly now about the time savers - be it with 5 products or 15.
@itsfi I am loving both of these capsules! I like you have a week day and a weekend one! My routine is much different from weekdays to weekends it’s nice to see I’m not alone! I love the lip mashups! I can’t wait to hear which ones you like more!!
@ather, my work week and weekend makeup routines are pretty different. I’m fairly minimalist when it comes to the weekend, usually a tinted lip balm, either a concealer or Tower 28 SunnyDays, and I’ll curl my lashes. Maybe (a big maybe) mascara.
Work week wise, it varies on what’s on my schedule - a full face may happen once or twice per week and then the other days, it’s somewhere between a full face and weekend wear.
What’s your workweek and weekend makeup look like?
@itsfi Wohooooo for getting one project finished! What a weight off the shoulders to have one off the desk and mind!
I have to say... I have a very vested interest in your three lip products from the work week. i have all three on my list for the sale... Do I need them all? Any I should skip?
I mean, how do you define "need" @missjeanie? 😅 All 3 of the lip products are different enough that you might need them all. I like all three, but if you were to tell me that you could only pick one, I'd say go for the Summer Fridays Dream Lip Oil for Moisturizing Sheer Coverage. This may help to show the consistency and how sheer vs. opaque the products are -
Top row (left to right): Tatcha - Tower 28 - Summer Fridays
Bottom row (left to right): Dior lip oil - Ami Cole lip oil - Pat McGrath Labs lip gloss
I'm going to tag @ather as I think she has some familiarty with the Tower 28 and Summer Fridays.
@missjeanie I definitely have to side with @itsfi on this! I feel like they are different in their own way so it depends what you like/need. I don’t have the Tatcha ones yet… but the SF and the T28 are both unique in their own ways. I would say the T28 is more moisturizing and the SF is more of a colour with a bit of moisture. It is the same time so I mean maybe you need all 3?
@ather I appreciate how you guys have twisted my arm lol! All three it is.
