Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge 2024

Hello, BIC Beauties! If the idea of makeup capsules piques your curiosity, or you're interested in seeing what's in the beauty collection or weekly makeup bag of your fellow BIC beauties, jump right on in - with questions, comments or a capsule of your own to share.

To add a fun take on putting together a makeup capsule, I've included theme(s) for the weekly capsule - some weeks, I have enough products in my stash (eek!) to make a whole capsule based on the prompt; other weeks, I have just one or two items that fit neatly within theme.

What is a capsule makeup collection?  

A capsule makeup collection is a selection of makeup products that can be used to put together different looks for a variety of occasions. For some of us, that may mean a group of essential products for your everyday look plus a few extra items for a more glam or dramatic look; and, for others of us, that may mean, a lineup of our holy grail product(s) in each makeup category. My ideal capsule makeup collection probably falls somewhere in between - we'll (hopefully) find out at the end of the year! I don't see myself as a minimalist, but I don't have an extensive collection of makeup either. I appreciate the collections of people who fall within both camps but I float somewhere in between - on the one hand, my brow product collection would earn a gold star if we were using a minimalist approach to makeup; my lip product lineup, on the other hand, would not. 🤣 It would most definitely not.  

Why have a capsule makeup collection?  

Everyone will have their own reasons for having (or not having) a more streamlined makeup collection. Over the years, I've just become more interested in having less beauty products on hand (well, except for lip products, lol) - a handful of items I use or reach for more frequently with maybe a few additional products that are go-to's for me for special events or occasions.  Don't get me wrong, I love trying new products and I don't see that changing. I just like the idea of having a simpler collection (I appreciate that "simpler" can be relative), curated to my needs and lifestyle.

Why weekly? 
A few years ago, beauty & lifestyle blogger Serein Wu, did a weekly series (on her blog and YouTube channel), Makeup Bag Monday, where she rotated her makeup bag each week with new product launches and makeup already in her collection. Every Monday, she shared the products she selected for the upcoming week and provided detailed makeup reviews on the makeup she used for the previous week. I may not post detailed reviews, but will at least try to include a weekly recap (probably at the end of the week) of what products I like and which ones didn't work for me.  If weekly works for you, great. If not, feel free to join in based on what works best for you.

What if I don't have enough products to fit the theme for a full face?

No need for your entire makeup capsule to fit the weekly theme(s). Just one will do. And, even if you don't have one that fits squarely within a theme, feel free to post your makeup capsule. We'd love to see what you're using and hear your feedback on the products as you put them to use.

RECAP - Week 14: The "Do Over" or "Take 2" 🎬 Makeup Capsule

I split this week into 2 different do-over makeup capsules - one for the work week and one for the weekend. Some weeks they're very similiar but others, like this past week, had two different themes going on. Each though combined (to some extent) two different themes we've had this year.

Week 14 Makeup Capsule Recap - The Standouts (Good & Bad)

Another week with no new items to add to the Top Shelf (this is fine with me as I'm trying to be very selective, even strict, in deciding what products receive this designation). Likewise, no declutters this week. 

The Standouts: 

🌻  HAUS LABS BY LADY GAGA Triclone Skin Tech Hydrating + De-puffing Concealer with Fermented Arnica - this is often too thick for my personal preference for under my eyes or as a substitute for foundation, but I really like using it to conceal blemishes. This was put to work this week - I've been breaking out something awful 🙁 and this concealer has made me a little less self conscious about that. 

💐  Love me my lip product choices for the work week and weekend but my favorite this past week was the pairing of the Ami Colé Desert Date Cream Blush & Lip Multistick Hibiscus and Fenty Crystal Holographic Lip Luminizer (limited edition). Swatch in spoiler for Weekend Wear capsule below. ⬇️

🌼  I was surprised how well the LAWLESS The One & Done Volumizing Mascara Black performed. I'm partial to waterproof mascaras, but this one held up pretty well - to be fair though, I didn't really put this to the gauntlet that I do with many of the mascaras I try. Will do that another day, but for this week, this stood out, in a good way. 

Undecided:

 ❓  Violette Fr. Invisible Bandage isn't something that will likely work for me in the daytime. It pills. Really badly. No bueno. 😐 Going to see how it performs in the at night, but I have a feeling it won't beat out the peace out acne dots as one of my GOAT zit zappers 🐐 This may be a contender for the chopping block at the end of the month. 😬

Workweek Wear: 

The "Woman-Founded Beauty Brands That I Don't Have Enough Products On Their Own To Do A One-Brand Theme" Makeup Capsule was a compilation of new-to-me products I would be trying for the first (or second or third) time and some items that have been in my rotation for a period of time, but that may or may not have made an appearance on this challenge until now. I was mainly looking to see how the Violette Fr. Invisible Bandage, the Lawless mascara and the three lip products (Tower 28, Summer Fridays & Tatcha) performed.

Weekend Wear:

The Fast & Furious Pops of Color Makeup Capsule was a fun one; though not quite as fast since I included a liquid liner but some pretty pops of purple, berry, and pink against a healthy, soft bronze glow for a spring weekend! 😍

If I can get my face to look put together & presentable in under 10 minutes in the morning, I'm happy. To do it under 5 gives me the gift of time - I can sit for a spell and sip on a cup of tea or coffee, instead of taking it with me on my drive to work. Yes, I could do that if I just rolled out of bed 5+ minutes earlier but staying under the covers for just those extra moments, few as they may be, is my "me time" that I cherish in the mornings. 

I was dealing with allergy-induced watery eyes during the Pops of Colour week so I didn't get a chance to use the purple-tone pairing of the mascara and liner except for one day, so I brought back that duo and they were lovely. I have dark lashes so the mascara, a deep plummy purple, didn't show up in its full glory, but you could catch the tint in the light every so often. I went with liquid liner this week, so this capsule did not make for an under 5 minute routine, even with my complexion combo of the Tower 28 + Drunk Elephant coming together in seconds.🏆 The Prados Beauty liquid liner formula is a litte more wet on application than I prefer, but keeping my lid shut and using a fan were simple tricks to make that work.

@itsfi  Great capsules! I love that you also have been sharing a weekend one because it can definitely differ right!! That lip combo with the Ami Cole and the Fenty is so pretty! Dare I say the perfect match? Maybe. It is perfect on you! Oooo I do remember loving the Lawless Mascara too. I can’t wait to see if it will actually pass your tests! Let the gauntlet begin!!! Which mascara is your 🐐? Or mascaras!

@ather, thank you! That Fenty lip gloss really changes up the Ami Cole Hibiscus shade nicely - it's a pretty berry on its own that can be amped up by just apply two layers of it, but with the Fenty, it changes it to a lovely pink gloss - not too bright, not too light. 😍 Nice to get that variation with just adding the gloss - I do wish Fenty would make this luminizer permanent. 

My 🐐 mascaras are usually waterproof mascaras - Lancôme Monsieur Big Waterproof Mascara 01 Waterproof Big is The New Black has been the top one, for at least a decade. DIOR Diorshow Iconic Overcurl Waterproof Mascara Black is a good one as well. Formulae from "clean" brands are getting better, but for most, I find them more lengthening than volumizing and they don't always last for very long with my oily, oily eyelids and hooded eyes. I have a handful of mascaras I want to go through, but am trying not to have too many open at one time, though I am considering opening up a handful and just going through a bunch of them in a few weeks. Will keep you posted on the Lawless.

@itsfi  hmmm that’s a good question! I feel like my love of the month may change up. I always think my current one is the best until I try another but I think my favs are MERIT Clean Lash Lengthening Tubing Mascara  and Tower 28 Beauty MakeWaves® Lengthening + Volumizing Mascara but I also like Wander Beauty Upgraded Lashes™ Thickening Mascara I'm trying to think of the others I love. I think those are most of them! I do remember loving the Lawless one too!

Whoa @ather, just having one open mascara in use at any given time would be super impressive! 🤯 3 is ideal for me - one waterproof, one regular, and one new to me that I’m testing out.

Now that your allergy symptoms have cleared I'm glad you got to play around with your plum/purple colored mascara and liner duo. 💜 

(Did you ever end up trying coffee and putting your face together? It didn't end up working out for me. I do my makeup after I brush my teeth and it's a good system, trying to get my teeth done after my makeup and coffee, that's just to tricky lol 😆)

@CynthieLu, thank you. For me, coffee + makeup time would have to be with a cold brew so I can sip on the coffee with a straw. Or, if it's on a weekend morning when I don't have to be anywhere until mid-morning. I tried it this past weekend and it was okay. I ended up taking my coffee with me to sip on while I walked over to my event or while doing some errands, instead of while doing my makeup.

@itsfi I need to snag the Ami Colé Desert Date Cream Blush & Lip Multistick Hibiscus !  That shade looks so pretty!  Do you find it nice on both cheeks and lips?  Or does it really benefit from the gloss topper?

@missjeanie, Ami Cole Hibiscus has a good color payoff. I need just a dab on both my lips and cheeks. For lips, I really do just dab it on, for that lip stain look, instead of gliding it over my lips like I might normally do with lipstick. My lips are on the dehydrated side at the moment so using the gloss was motivated not just for how it would look with Hibiscus. If my lips were not as dry and dehydrated, I would wear Hibiscus alone. On my cheeks, it applie and wears well if I just go about my regular skincare routine - I don't feel like I need to make sure my cheeks are extra hydrated. The formula is described as a "soft matte" and I'd say that is accurate. Victoria Beckham Beauty blush sticks are more emollient, balmier. the Ami Cole is similar to Westman Atelier.

@itsfi Ohhhh I'm excited now.  I quite like the way you describe it.  Those formulas are so fun to use as a multi product.  Some of the older multisticks were purely a cheek product for me.

Oooh, do they have that Ami Cole set available in Canada @missjeanie? If I didn't have both products in those shades, I would pick up the set. It's a great combination. Even better if they had the option to customize the set, so you can pick which blush stick and lip oil shades you'd like.

@itsfi We do not have Ami Colé in Canada yet.  I have a friend who did an order for me for US products.  I had my eye on the Hibiscus shade so I was quite happy to see the set.  You know I'll get use out of the gloss too!  Oh I love customizable sets!  They're so fun.  Probably a PITA for the warehouse staff....but they make my heart happy!
