Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Welcome to Year 7 of our Pan It! Challenge ElleElleG_0-1704168084184.gif

ElleElleG_9-1704168647118.jpeg

The "Rules"

To accommodate a variety of interests, you all are encouraged to pick items to pan that are most suitable to your collections.  For some, this might mean focusing on a particular type of product (like lipstick) and for others this may include a larger variety spanning your entire makeup or skincare routine.

Getting Started (please share the following)

  • Which item(s) you would like to work on
  • How long you will work on said item
  • Goal: explore a new item, revisit an old item, decide whether to keep pass or trash, and/or completely finish item, etc.
  • Starting photo of item

Please Use This Thread To...

  • share what item(s) you are working on,
  • provide comparative progress photos of your item(s) monthly (at the beginning of the month when possible),
  • ask questions,
  • encourage others,
  • motivate others with the looks you create with your item(s)

Tips and Tricks to Panning/Getting Some Use Out of Your Stash:

Spoiler
  • Take photos!!  When you think you aren’t making a dent in anything look back at those photos, I’m certain you’ll see some changes 😃 *this is the number one recommendation for everyone, regardless of how long you’ve been panning! Those photos add up and can help you realize progress you might otherwise overlook.
  • If you goal is to hit pan or use something up entirely, try concentrating your brush/applicator in the same area each time you use it
  • Multitask your products: eyeshadows as highlighter, lipstick as blush, eyeshadow as brow powder, etc.
  • Layer eyeshadow to create different colors (this is especially helpful to get use out of shades you’re not fond of).
  • Have shadows with a ton of fall out?  Use water
  • Watching the progress of others’ can be fun but try not compare your progress to theirs.  We all use our makeup differently and have different goals.
  • Don’t restrict yourself to only using the item(s) you are working on.  It’s more than OK to incorporate other items or take a break!
  • Makeup should be fun….if you begin to dread doing your makeup because you made a commitment to use a product that you now hate, TOSS IT!  Do not force yourself to use up something you don’t like.  Move on to something else!  (This includes excluding particular shades from your goals if focusing on palettes, etc.)

Ideas to Help You Pan Those Items:

Spoiler
  • Roll the dice: number your items and use a random number generator to pick what you will use each (day/week/month/etc.)
  • Layer/Mask: items you are less fond of under things you like
  • Pan a Look: at the beginning of the week pick a look that you can wear everyday
  • Recreate: a look worn by a fellow BICer, celebrity, etc.
  • Spice up an "everyday" look by adding subtle pops of color (in the crease or on the lower lash line, mix lip products to make shades wearable, etc.)

Pan It! - 2022 Challenge

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@cianni  thank you so much! 💜

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Wow @caitbird, marvelous work on your skincare items - 4 this month, woohoo!!! 🙌 That's impressive! That Glow Recipe jar packs in a lot of product so it's no small feat to work your way through that one. All of them really. The Solved Skincare looks good - have you tried anything from them before this oil?

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@itsfi  thank you so much! Yes, the Glow Recipe (or all of them really) felt like it took forever lol 😅 This is my first product I've tried from Solved Skincare. It is a nice basic/pure skincare oil but idk if I love it enough to repurchase. I have some other oils to try next to see which I like best 🤔

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

July Check-In

MONTHLY SUMMARY: We’re making good progress on most of the items in my pan it! challenge, both the products I started the year with and the ones that have been subbed in as I’ve finished items. The only product I haven't used at all this month 😬 is the YSL eyeshadow quad but I have good reason for that - I was focusing hard on one of the eyeshadows from ND Biba palette and I’ll just say this - it paid off; I have some good news to share. *squee 😍

JULY ALL STARS: I haven't hit full pan on all the products in my original pan it! line up for the year, but I'm happy to share that some are very close, and one I am thrilled to say is DONE. 🙌

NEXT MONTH’S FOCUS: I've been trying not to lose sight of the shadows in the ND Biba palette, and, as a result, I didn't really reach for the YSL Stora Dolls quad very much, or at all really. Sorry @blackkitty2014, I'm not off to a great start with that one. I'm going to try to include the YSL eyeshadow quad more regularly in my weekly  Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge starting next week. Or, well, that’s the plan, at least. 🤞

7.2024 Pan - WA.jpg

I have just the teensiest bit of product to use up before that second to last lip shade is done! 😍 Trying to decide how hard I want to make a push for finishing off the entirety of the Westman Atelier Lip Suede Lipstick Palette Les Nudes. I mean, I’m halfway there. Who'd've thought I come this close to panning a lip palette? Not I. 😂

7.2024 Pan - Hair Care.jpg

Off to a good start with these two new items to the pan it! challenge. The Ceremonia Guava Hydrating Leave-In Conditioner 6.7 oz / 200 mL is a loved item and I don’t foresee any issues with using it regularly. The shu uemura Essence Absolue Nourishing Protective Hair Oil is nice but I know I will have to put in some effort to focus on reaching for it. Don't get me wrong, it’s good; I just really liked the Oribe Nourishing oil and there are a few other hair oils I have my eye on. Just gotta focus!!

7.2024 Pan - Body + Tint.jpg

These new additions to the pan it! lineup are coming along. I am rotating through a couple other body oils and lotions while I'm working on panning the Osea Undaria Algae Body Oil and the Osea Anti-Aging Body Balm so it may take a little longer to get some traction on these two. Both are lovely - absorb easily, moisturizing and have a subtle, but lovely scent.

The U Beauty The Super Tinted Hydrator is a wonderful skin tint. Even though it doesn't look like it from the photo, that is some nice progress. I'll plan to use it at least once per week, either as a primer for a gorgeous glow to the skin or as my base (though I'll need some concealer as it is on the sheer coverage side).

7.2024 Pan - Nails + Eyes.jpg

My slow-and-steady-wins-the-race pan products keep pushing on. Keeping the Cuccio Naturale Revitalizing-Hydrating Oil For Repaired Cuticles Overnight (Milk and Honey) on my nightstand has been paying off and I'll continue to keep the bottle there. Progress on the OLEHENRIKSEN Wrinkle Blur™ Bakuchiol Eye Gel Crème 0.5 oz/ 15 mL was at a slower clip than usual since I was reaching for another eye cream a little more often this month; I still think I will be able to finish off this OH eye gel-cream by the end of the year, if not before.

And, looky what we have here, folks!

7.2024 Pan - ND Biba Shine.jpg

Full pan on the shine shadow from the Natasha Denona Biba Eyeshadow Palette - yesssss!!! I’m super happy.

And am even more motivated now to hit pan on the prairie shade and to try to finish off the rustic shade. 🤞

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@itsfi Did I blink and miss where the rest of that WA went? WOOOO bye bye Shine!! So close to being done with it! So exciting!

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

lol, this Westman Atelier lip palette has been such an interesting item to pan @Samtian - it's definitely falls in the camp of "takes a while to hit pan but once you do, it's easier to expand the pan" 😅 I hit pan on the 2nd shade in early May and then this was July with pretty much all of the 3rd shade. I've surprised myself with how much I like this palette and the remaining shades. 😀

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@itsfi so much progress! I feel so invested in the Biba progress at this point, its almost as if I’m the one doing it 😂

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

I love that @cianni!! 🥰 It’s really been so great having the support, having people invested and on this journey with me. That’s meant so much. We’re almost there!!

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@itsfi I'm so proud of you for that eyeshadow pan!!!!!  You've worked SO hard on that palette 👏.

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@CookieGirl1, thank you!!! It's really been a journey, with so many good lessons learned. Working on panning this palette has been eye opening - there's a lot of product packed into ND shadows, for one. How long it takes to finish a shadow - and that has been a huge factor in my being a lot more mindful and deliberate when it comes to picking up other eye shadow palettes, and other products as well, primarily powder products. I'm always so impressed with the dedication you put into finishing your bronzers and powders - there's a lot of products in those items!

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@itsfi I don't see myself ever panning an eyeshadow but who knows...

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@itsfi  wow, excellent progress! 🎉 Great job! You've made some amazing progress with that WA lip palette, and of course ND Biba! And I can sooo relate to "slow and steady wins the race" when it comes to panning items 😅. I have learned that, happily, even when it doesn't seem like I am making much progress for the longest time, it still adds up and is worth it in the end!

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@caitbird, I've found that the products where you just put your head down and reach for consistently are the ones that will surprise you - just keep at it and one day, bam! you'll see pan! And, usually, the hardest part is hitting that first bit of pan; it'll start expanding and you'll see more and more pan. So satisfying. 100 agree, completely worth it in the end. We got this!

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@itsfi  that is so true, I actually had this exact experience this past month with several skincare items I was working on panning. It felt like I would never be done with them for so long, but I kept using them and then one day - bam, they were done! So satisfying, indeed!💪

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Woah @itsfi @I’m impressed just looking at that lip palette. I would call it done if you’re ready to part with it. I’m a bit behind in the YSL palette too. I made some progress on other pan it stuffs. Will report soon

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Nah, at this point, I'm going to work towards finishing all of it @blackkitty2014! I may not get through with it this pan year but I'll finish whatever I don't get to this year offline. Yaaay for progress on pan items!

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Staying true to my tardiness... I present my panning project from the beginning of July... at the end of the month.

452649278_784814733537724_724544146554947916_n.jpg

Spoiler
- The Vaseline Body lotion has actually been seeing use.  I wear dresses most of the summer and find this lotion doesn't soak in well, so I can't wear it as much with pants.  With a skirt I get away with it.  I didn't mark the beginning of July because it looked as though it hadn't been used.  When I took the top and pump off I could tell that there was a bit of a dip in the center.  I'm hoping that means this sucker will be empty soon, even if I can't see the progress on the side of the bottle.
-The Neutrogena Overnight Hair Therapy is something that sat in my stash for waaaaaay too long.  That said, since I've forced myself to use it, I'm not mad at it.  It does make my hair feel a bit softer.  Should be done before August, and hoping that I'm better at remembering to use hair care going forward.
- Too Faced Dew You Foundation.  I started this year thinking I really did not like this foundation.  It's grown on me.  Its not a favourite, but it's okay.  I feel like I've seen significant progress the last few months though and feel quite excited that I've put this one to use.  Hoping to be done it during August!

Spoiler
-My first lip product, the Kiehl's Lip Oil... is not a fav.  I regularly misplace this and have thought about tossing it several times.  I'm reminding myself that I'm not pressuring myself and there's no timeline to use these things.  I'm doing some work from home coming up here and hoping that keeping it on my home desk will be a reminder to use it.  The formula is not great, dries out my lips if I use it too often, but once a day or so is okay.
-The Too Cool for School lip scrub is lovely.  I've been popping this on in the morning as I do my makeup most days and I'm happy to be using it up as well as enjoying some soft lips in the morning!

Spoiler
-So hard to get a good photo of this GXVE quad.  I haven't been wearing a ton of shadow the last few months, but have been trying to remember to reach for this one at least once a week, even if only for a very light application.  The palest shade is gone, I'll be happy to finish off the second palest and hit pan on the third cooler shade.  I strongly suspect that the warmer upper right shade won't be touched, and I'm okay with that.
-The ABH brow pencil is fine.  I'm more of a tinted gel gal these days but am happy to use these brow pencils up this year with the project and then move back to my preferred products.

Spoiler
Last month I knew I was almost done with my Origins Hello Calm.  This was a bust product for me.  I used it up on my legs.  I tried it on my face and had a reaction.  This could have been the formula, but it also could have been a product that was over 3 or 4 years old.
-I had replaced the Origins with the Freshmade Lemon Mask.  I had used this and found my face turned quite red, but used it up on my neck and décolleté before a shower.  It didn't hurt, but I also didn't notice anything on the positive side.  I have found that using a mask like this on my body has been a great way to use up some products that I ordinarily wouldn't have and would've been sitting in my stash still.
-Sunflowers fragrance.  This was fine.  It wasn't a favourite, but I used it up both on my body as my daily fragrance as well as a spritz here or there on curtains in my home as a room fragrance.
-Ouai hair serum.  I didn't notice anything bad about this, but also don't know that I saw any growth.  Some times I thought I did, but then others I wonder if I was just telling myself that I saw it.  I'm not opposed to trying a hair serum again.  But I'm also not sold that it's a miracle product for me.

452292557_2220572978280957_5854157573096348815_n.jpg

Spoiler
two new products to replace my mask and hair product I used up
-The Formula 10.0.6 mask is nice enough.  Moisturizing, lovely light peachy scent.  Doesn't feel like it does much for my face, so I'm using as a neck and chest mask pre shower again.  I'm hoping to use it a few times a week and use it up within a few months.
-The Organix Split End Mender.  Has been in my hair care stash for ... probably close to a decade.  I have bad split ends.  I blame long hair, dye and regular heat.  I do not see this mending any split ends, but maybe it'll make them take longer to really form?  Heres hoping I can be consistent and use this up, bonus if it works.

Spoiler
For my last product to enter into my 10... I'm entering two fragrances.  These are both nice, though not favourites.  The reason I really chose them though is the rollerball.  I'm just not a rollerball gal.  I like a spritz.  Hoping the smaller size will push me to make some serious progress.

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@missjeanie Whoa amazing progress! I don't like rollerballs either lol.

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@Samtian Every now and again I think I can get on with a rollerball, then every now and again I get one by accident.  Just not for me either.

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Woah!!! I'm so excited!!! Look at that GXVE pan, and the progress on the Vaseline, Neutrogena and Too Faced - you're so close! Excellent, excellent work, @missjeanie!

Ohhh, I'm sorry the Ouai isn't working for you; I wonder if it's because your hair is naturally so beautifully lush and thick?! Whereas mine is fine and flat. 😅

For the fragrances, how easy does it look like it would be to pop off the actual rollerballs? I'm wondering if you might be able to remove them and transfer the product into a spray bottle / spritzer to make the dispensing mechanism more to your liking.

P.S. I had a good laugh at "Staying true to my tardiness... I present my panning project from the beginning of July... at the end of the month." If I've learned anything from the pan it! challenge, it's that consistency is key! So keep at your schedule, missjeanie. 👊

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@missjeanie  great job, you've made some awesome progress! I love the variety of products you have, in all different beauty categories. I also love your idea to use up products on your body when they don't work for your face - I wouldn't have thought to do that before joining this challenge, but now it's a method I've found helpful myself.
