Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Welcome to Year 7 of our Pan It! Challenge ElleElleG_0-1704168084184.gif

ElleElleG_9-1704168647118.jpeg

The "Rules"

To accommodate a variety of interests, you all are encouraged to pick items to pan that are most suitable to your collections.  For some, this might mean focusing on a particular type of product (like lipstick) and for others this may include a larger variety spanning your entire makeup or skincare routine.

Getting Started (please share the following)

  • Which item(s) you would like to work on
  • How long you will work on said item
  • Goal: explore a new item, revisit an old item, decide whether to keep pass or trash, and/or completely finish item, etc.
  • Starting photo of item

Please Use This Thread To...

  • share what item(s) you are working on,
  • provide comparative progress photos of your item(s) monthly (at the beginning of the month when possible),
  • ask questions,
  • encourage others,
  • motivate others with the looks you create with your item(s)

Tips and Tricks to Panning/Getting Some Use Out of Your Stash:

Spoiler
  • Take photos!!  When you think you aren’t making a dent in anything look back at those photos, I’m certain you’ll see some changes 😃 *this is the number one recommendation for everyone, regardless of how long you’ve been panning! Those photos add up and can help you realize progress you might otherwise overlook.
  • If you goal is to hit pan or use something up entirely, try concentrating your brush/applicator in the same area each time you use it
  • Multitask your products: eyeshadows as highlighter, lipstick as blush, eyeshadow as brow powder, etc.
  • Layer eyeshadow to create different colors (this is especially helpful to get use out of shades you’re not fond of).
  • Have shadows with a ton of fall out?  Use water
  • Watching the progress of others’ can be fun but try not compare your progress to theirs.  We all use our makeup differently and have different goals.
  • Don’t restrict yourself to only using the item(s) you are working on.  It’s more than OK to incorporate other items or take a break!
  • Makeup should be fun….if you begin to dread doing your makeup because you made a commitment to use a product that you now hate, TOSS IT!  Do not force yourself to use up something you don’t like.  Move on to something else!  (This includes excluding particular shades from your goals if focusing on palettes, etc.)

Ideas to Help You Pan Those Items:

Spoiler
  • Roll the dice: number your items and use a random number generator to pick what you will use each (day/week/month/etc.)
  • Layer/Mask: items you are less fond of under things you like
  • Pan a Look: at the beginning of the week pick a look that you can wear everyday
  • Recreate: a look worn by a fellow BICer, celebrity, etc.
  • Spice up an "everyday" look by adding subtle pops of color (in the crease or on the lower lash line, mix lip products to make shades wearable, etc.)

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Happy almost-September, aka getting into my favorite months of the year!! Since my last update I’ve moved, quit a job that was becoming toxic to my mental health, and I am reinvigorated to do some panning after I a) had all my products boxed away for a few weeks and b) am working on getting my mental state out of the dirt. I can happily say that I finished my little NEST Balinese Coconut rollerball (I ended up adding it to my body cream because the rollerball kept getting stuck). I can’t find my photo of my old fragrance sample lineup, so I took a new one of what I currently have for fragrances AND I have a baby dent in my Juliette Has A Gun Magnolia Bliss! The two Valentino Donna Born In Roma perfumes are basically still full and I haven’t touched the Not A Perfume sample, so will update at the end of the year. I am making a concerted effort to use my eyeshadow products, even if I’m only at home—for the most part, I swipe on some sort of lid shade and then use something dark and/or sparkly for eyeliner. I use Tarte Park Ave Princess bronzer and a mini Tarte Amazonian Clay Blush (shade Seduce) as eyeshadow bases because they work well for that purpose on me and these pans will last forever. My palette is Urban Decay Metal Mania—I genuinely like this palette but it appears to be discontinued. I have a handful of Laura Mercier and ELF shadow sticks too. We’ll see how much progress I make on those fronts!

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@KeriCherryDee I find makeup can be a great escape and mental boost!  Hopefully the same for you.  I love the bronzer as shadow trick.  Great way to get use out of products!

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Those are some big changes @KeriCherryDee and it sounds like they will be for the better. Happy to hear you are feeling refreshed and reinvigorated!

woohoo 🙌🏼 on finishing the Nest rollerball - that is such a lovely scent! 🥰 Your pan it! lineup looks awesome - lots of great products and you’re already showing progress on them!

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

I swear, I go through these WAY too quickly.

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@CookieGirl1 such a good product!!

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Great job! At least you found a product you love @CookieGirl1

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Seeing you go through these never gets old @CookieGirl1. Never! Excellent work.

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@itsfi *sigh* I think that I need to find a new favorite cream bronzer!  I go through these ridiculously fast.

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@CookieGirl1, any new ones you have your eye on?

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@itsfi no, I guess that's my hangup because there aren't any that I'm just dying to try.

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Is your preference for cream bronzer like the Makeup by Mario? Powder? Liquid? Stick form? With fall/winter coming, maybe it'll be a good time to change it up, if you can find one that catches your eye, of course @CookieGirl1

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@CookieGirl1  awesome job! Is this number 3 for you now?

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@caitbird Uh...maybe 🙄.

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@CookieGirl1 That's awesome!!! They better not discontinue it lol.

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

July tally here! I finished 8 products total in July, of which 6 were full-sized! I am also happy to report that one of my pans this month was from my project! LAWLESS Forget The Filler Lip Plumper Line Smoothing Gloss Rosy Outlook is no more. While i did like the product, i have so many lipglosses that i really don’t need to pick up another one at this time.

i may get around to taking photos of what I’ve worked through from this project, but the main ones I’ve used are:

I can’t remember if i mentioned this or not, but part of my project included a LE Natasha Denona 5-pan holiday palette. I believe it was the Aeris. I didn’t think id actually pan it, but i did want to use it more. There was one shade in there that i particularly loved. Unfortunately, it fell off my counter and completely shattered. Not really the panning i had imagined for it, but needless to say its not part of my project any longer 😞 I’ve also got the Huda Beauty Chocolate Obsessions palette in this project, so ill just focus on using that for the rest of the year

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Woowhee @cianni, you have done some excellent work with panning - go girl!!! 👊 Oh no, I'm so sorry about the ND palette. When I read about it's demise, I was envisioning it in slow mo, falling off the counter and then hitting the ground and shattering - nooooooooo!!!! RIP ND Aeris.

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@cianni  wow, awesome panning progress! Sorry about the ND palette, that's always such a bummer when that happens. We've all been there!

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@cianni Wow fabulous work!!! So sorry about the ND.

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Well, time flies, and now it's time for some July updates! I am happy to say that overall, July saw some decent progress for this project, although some items/goals did fall by the wayside. Still, I did a lot better than in June, so I am pretty happy with my progress, and hope to continue making strides with my various goals in August.

Skincare items & goals

Spoiler
I made some really good progress with my skincare items in July! I actually finished, not one, not two, but FOUR items - 3 of them in one day!
behold the sweet, sweet feeling of accomplishment!behold the sweet, sweet feeling of accomplishment!

- sheet masks (all)

- starting status: quite a lot, but I am too lazy to count them 😅

goal: do a sheet mask weekly

update: did 2 sheet masks in July. Not quite weekly, but still better than June, so I'm satisfied.

Still working steadily on Neutrogena Hydro Boost Exfoliating Cleanser & LANEIGE Cream Skin Refillable Toner & Moisturizer with Ceramides and Peptides

Hair items & goals

Spoiler
No major progress to report for hair items & goals this month - just slowly working away.
- dae Stargloss Shine Hair Gloss Treatment 6 oz / 177 ml

goal: use consistently before showering

update: remembering to use this consistently is still a struggle for me. I remember it sometimes, but usually I still forget. I definitely need to find a better system for reminding me to use it before I shower.

- hair mask samples/minis (all)

goal: finish

update: these are the hair mask minis I'm currently rotating through; haven't finished any of them yet, but making steady progress.

 Makeup items & goals

Spoiler
Makeup items & goals were a mixed bag this past month - some saw progress, but others did not. I want to map out more of a plan or schedule to more consistently use palette shades and lippies for looks in August and the coming months.

- Hourglass Ambient Lighting Edit Unlocked Palette Jellyfish

goal: use & experiment with at least weekly

update: used at least 2x this past month, so not quite weekly, but I'm still happy I got it on the board, so to speak.

- Natasha Denona Xenon palette (I guess I can't tag this anymore?)

goal: use every shade at least once

update: used 2 more shades (6/15 total)

20240503_170543_capture-01 Aug update palette.jpg

- Danessa Myricks Lightwork V I Am palette

goal: use every shade at least once

update: used 6 shades (6/18 total)
20240503_170518_capture-01 Aug update palette.jpg

Didn't do any red or other bright lipstick looks this month, or use any shades from Colourpop Fade Into Hue palette. Will try to do better with both of those goals in August. Still trying to work on Glossier Stretch Concealer & Flower Beauty Blush Bomb Color Drops, but no major progress to report for either.

Here are some looks from July using project pan items:

Fragrance items & goals

Spoiler
I didn't use perfumes/fragrances as much as I would have liked in July, but on the other hand candle burning has been going really well. Based on my progress so far with this year's challenge, I will be adjusting one of my fragrance goals (for full sized fragrances) to something that is hopefully more realistic for me.

- fragrance samples & travel sizes (all)

goal: use each at least 2x, decide whether to purchase full size

update: used 1 sample 1x - Parfums de Marly Delina Exclusif

used 1 travel size 2x - Penhaligon's The Favourite. I liked this one, and will plan to purchase the full size for my collection in the future.

- full size fragrances (all)

goal: use each (13) at least 1x month

update: used 2 FS fragrances: NEST New York Wild Poppy Eau de Parfum 1.7oz/50mL  & By Rosie Jane Rosie Eau de Parfum 1.7 oz/ 50 mL , both of which are favorites. I think I am going to modify this goal going forward - I don't think using all of my full size fragrances each month is a realistic goal. I am going to set a new goal of using ~6 of them each month, and see if that is more achievable for me.

- scented candles (all)

goal: light a scented candle at least 1x each week

update: lit one or more candles 1-2x or more each week! July's candles in rotation included DW Home Firefly & Meadow, NEST New York Rose Noir & Oud Candle 2oz/57g & NEST New York Grapefruit Votive Candle 2.1oz/ 57g  . Candle burning has been going very well; I am happy with my progress with this goal, and have been enjoying lighting candles more regularly. I hope to continue this progress in August & the coming months!

Nails items & goals

Spoiler

Overall, this was a good month for my nail goals, as I was able to exceed my goal for monthly manis!

- nail polishes, press ons & nail art supplies (all)

goal: do at least one mani every month

update: did 3 manis (+ 1 pedi) in July! Very happy with this.
Kiss imPress ColorFX press onsKiss imPress ColorFX press onsStatic Nails press ons & Kiss press on toenailsStatic Nails press ons & Kiss press on toenailsKiss blank press ons, polished with Clionadh Cosmetics Sunken Treasure & Mooncat House of Hades & Ella + Mila Drippin' GoldKiss blank press ons, polished with Clionadh Cosmetics Sunken Treasure & Mooncat House of Hades & Ella + Mila Drippin' Gold
Still working on the Seche Vite top coat; I do use it every time I polish my nails, but I think it's going to take me a while to finish that one.

That's all I have to report for July's project pan progress! Overall, I think I did pretty well in most areas, and I hope to continue this positive progress in August, while also picking up the slack with items that didn't see much progress in July. Thanks as always to everyone participating in this challenge thread for the support & encouragement! 💜
