Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Welcome to Year 7 of our Pan It! Challenge ElleElleG_0-1704168084184.gif

ElleElleG_9-1704168647118.jpeg

The "Rules"

To accommodate a variety of interests, you all are encouraged to pick items to pan that are most suitable to your collections.  For some, this might mean focusing on a particular type of product (like lipstick) and for others this may include a larger variety spanning your entire makeup or skincare routine.

Getting Started (please share the following)

  • Which item(s) you would like to work on
  • How long you will work on said item
  • Goal: explore a new item, revisit an old item, decide whether to keep pass or trash, and/or completely finish item, etc.
  • Starting photo of item

Please Use This Thread To...

  • share what item(s) you are working on,
  • provide comparative progress photos of your item(s) monthly (at the beginning of the month when possible),
  • ask questions,
  • encourage others,
  • motivate others with the looks you create with your item(s)

Tips and Tricks to Panning/Getting Some Use Out of Your Stash:

Spoiler
  • Take photos!!  When you think you aren’t making a dent in anything look back at those photos, I’m certain you’ll see some changes 😃 *this is the number one recommendation for everyone, regardless of how long you’ve been panning! Those photos add up and can help you realize progress you might otherwise overlook.
  • If you goal is to hit pan or use something up entirely, try concentrating your brush/applicator in the same area each time you use it
  • Multitask your products: eyeshadows as highlighter, lipstick as blush, eyeshadow as brow powder, etc.
  • Layer eyeshadow to create different colors (this is especially helpful to get use out of shades you’re not fond of).
  • Have shadows with a ton of fall out?  Use water
  • Watching the progress of others’ can be fun but try not compare your progress to theirs.  We all use our makeup differently and have different goals.
  • Don’t restrict yourself to only using the item(s) you are working on.  It’s more than OK to incorporate other items or take a break!
  • Makeup should be fun….if you begin to dread doing your makeup because you made a commitment to use a product that you now hate, TOSS IT!  Do not force yourself to use up something you don’t like.  Move on to something else!  (This includes excluding particular shades from your goals if focusing on palettes, etc.)

Ideas to Help You Pan Those Items:

Spoiler
  • Roll the dice: number your items and use a random number generator to pick what you will use each (day/week/month/etc.)
  • Layer/Mask: items you are less fond of under things you like
  • Pan a Look: at the beginning of the week pick a look that you can wear everyday
  • Recreate: a look worn by a fellow BICer, celebrity, etc.
  • Spice up an "everyday" look by adding subtle pops of color (in the crease or on the lower lash line, mix lip products to make shades wearable, etc.)

@lmaster Thank you!

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

👋🏾👋🏾👋🏾 Hey Hey! Here’s an update on my project:

I ended up deciding to focus on
another Natasha Denona item 🤪. Lately I’ve felt a bit meh about my daily makeup and have been trying different things on the rest of my face so it’s been nice having a palette that doesn’t require much thought. I’ve also been able to easily pull in other palettes when I want to change things up.

phonto.jpeg

This champagne shade is lovely, and I’m impressed by how easy it is to build up or sheer out. Not sure if the dip in this palette translates well in the photo but I anticipate hitting pan in the next couple weeks. The aqua shade on the far left is one that has left me a bit disappointed. For some reason none of my application methods have allowed the shade to look as good as it does in the pan. The texture is unlike any of the other shades and kind of reminds me of the putty-like texture from the Colourpop Super Shock shadows. The brown is a little more cool toned than I prefer so I haven’t used it much so far. I may try to incorporate it in my brows going forward. No major thoughts on the other two shades other than I’m glad the tan color works both under my brow and in the crease without looking chalky.

This Huda palette is one of the ones I reach for when I want to spruce things up. The bottom right shade is more burgundy than brown but it mixes perfectly for my brows. The glitter shades are a bit too chunky and come with a lot of fall out, but they’re gorgeous on the lid. I’m not planning to complete this palette but it could happen.

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Both palettes are great for everyday. Congratulations to the amazing progress @ElleElleG 🌹 I need to get back on panning my eyeshadows (any of them would do lol 😂 )

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Agreed @blackkitty2014 ! I desperately need to reduce the amount of time I spend on my face in the morning and these palettes have helped. Added bonus that I'm not bored with the color selection (at least for now 😉). Come back to the dark side and pan those palettes 😅

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Will do @ElleElleG . I need to report my end of quarter status. 🥰

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Great choices!! Can't wait to see the progress @ElleElleG

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

😁 thanks @lmaster

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Ahhhh, look at the dips in that ND palette @ElleElleG😍 Pan in the next couple of weeks? Ahhhh yeaaahh!!! That's awesome! Of the ND mini palettes you've used, are there ones you find yourself liking more than others? Or any favorites?

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

😊 thanks, @itsfi ! Hmm, I think I still like the ND No. 3 5-pan palette that I was working on last year: great color range, all shades were useable (including the shades I didn't enjoy quite as much), and travel friendly. Off the top of my head, I don't think I have any of the other minis but I'll need to dig in my collection and follow up 😁

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@ElleElleG Wow great work! Bummer about that teal shade. Can't wait to see the next pan!

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Thanks @Samtian ! I'm determined to find a way to make that shade work. At the moment I'm leaning towards scraping the top layer, hmmmm 🤔

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

I’m still doing ok at using most of my products at least a few times a week. I had to toss the CT light wonder foundation because it expired. I did almost use it all up though, so I’m very happy about that.

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

🎼 Another one bites the dust 🎵 great job @faeriegirl !!!

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@faeriegirl, that's great. Consistency is key.

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

I had a pretty good panning month in February/early March.

I'm doing a 10 item rolling challange to use everything up.  As something gets used up, I'll rotate in a new product.

Spoiler
These four items were all used up!
-Pacifica fragrance was fine... it felt a bit... young.  That said, it was a nice enough gourmand.  The roller ball wasn't working and it was shockingly easy to pop out when I tried.  I know I used this up quicker by 'dumping' it on my arm daily.  I'm glad I used it, but won't miss it.
-Smashbox Primer Water.  This was really nice.  I got through most of it in two months and I'm actually missing it a bit now that it's gone.  I find that I appreciate the spray factor first thing in the morning.  I do have other primers to work through as they're not a habit for me to use, so I won't likely buy it again if I could find it, but I do hope they come out with these again.
-It Cosmetics Brow Power -- This used to be a favourite and I only had a bit left in this one to use up.  I much prefer a tinted gel to use on it's own these days, but want to use up some pencils I have stashed away.  This time round this one felt... smudgy.  Glad it's done.  I've moved on to an ABH to use up and wouldn't purchase this one again.
-Joe Fresh Blue Eye Liner -- I put this in my project pan in Jan 2023, and it was already well used then.  I thought it would be a 'gimmie' product.  13.5 months later.... I used this sucker 5 days a week for 13.5 months!  I only line my upper lash line, but seriously.  This would not die.  I'm now very aware that I can't use up all the eyeliner I have in the next 10 years.  No more eyeliner purchases for a good long while. I will add in another liner to my project later this year, but for now I want to play around a bit.

Spoiler
The Too Faced Foundation didn't get a ton of use as I've been trying to use foundations from my weekly capsules.  I'm thinking I'll try and fit this into a capsule at least once a month to get more use out of it and get it finished hopefully in the next three months.
Kiehls Lip Oil.  This one is... not the vibe.  I find if I store it right side up (same as in the photo) too much gloops out when I remove the cap to use, so I need to store it up side down.  All fine and good, but the formula dries out my lips if I re-apply more than two or three times a day. I'm going to keep at it, but this one will be slow going I think.

Spoiler
I'm just not into the Vaseline body lotion.  And I've stopped using other body lotions since I feel bad for not using the Vaseline when I do.  I find it doesn't absorb well and so I don't use it before bed.  I also don't use it before getting dressed for the same reason.  It's strictly a weekend product when I have pantless lounging time.

Ouai Scalp serum.  I'm trying to get into the habit of using this... I need to use @Mellmars1185 's habit stacking here somehow.  I certainly don't think this one is doing anything bad, but I'm not yet convinced it's doing anything to promote hair growth around my hairline which is what I'm hoping for.  Fingers crossed some habit stacking will give more consistent use and results.

Creme Shop Gold Peeling Mask -- I can't see this doing anything for my skin, good or bad.  It looks cool for a selfie though.  I'm using this every two weeks or so, and hope to finish it off in the next few months.  Wouldn't purchase again, but not mad at it.

Spoiler
The Gwen Palette was a gift from @TeamBIC a few years ago that I thought would be a good entry to panning a shadow palette.  I knew I needed a quad and nothing larger, along with a shade selection that would be easy to use.  I'd already hit pan on the upper left shade before this challenge, but it's gotten bigger for sure.  There is also a dip in the lower left shade, though it's still too hard to see in the photo.
The brow gel is a clear one, I'd paired this with the brow pencil in the last few months and am going to let it roll on it's own now.  I just don't really use clear gels, but have a few here that need using up.

Spoiler
My three new products to replace the four I finished up
-Neutrogena Overnight Therapy may be older than some on BIC... I thought it would be like a detangling spray, but it's not doing a lot of detangling.  I shower at night and put this in right before bed.  My hair doesn't feel any different than it does without it, but I'll keep at it just to use this bottle up and get it outta ma stash.

-Pacifica Roller Ball Fragrance.  I had to remove the roller ball from this one as well.  I'll use it up in the same 'dump it on my arm' fashion.  However this one has more of a coconut fragrance that I know my assistant at work is not a fan of.  That said, it'll be a weekend product so it'll take a bit longer to use up.  It's again, a younger fragrance, but I don't mind it.

-Too Cool Coconut Sugar Lip Scrub... we're not gonna talk about how old this one is either.  But it still smells great and feels good.  Hoping to use it up and get into the habit of using a lip scrub again.  No idea at all how long this will take, but I'm enjoying using it!

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Great job @missjeanie 👏. I need to post my last quarter of the year progress which wasn’t much I’m afraid 😘

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@blackkitty2014 Some months are always better than others.  I have a habit of going hard for the first few months then it levels off a lot.  I'm happy to get some progress in while I'm still enthusiastic lol.

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

I love how consistent and focused you are on your pan project @missjeanie. It's impressive and inspiring. How amazing does it feel to have gone through those 4 items?!!! 🙌 Congrats! 🎉

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@itsfi It was very motivational for sure!  Seeing progress always helps me re focus.  I know I have a few longer term items in here so keeping a mix of some shorter is good for me.

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@missjeanie Wow, I'm impressed the liner lasted you so long!!

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@PrettyPaint I NEVER would have thought that it would last that long.  I thought I'd have it done in a month or two, talk about a never ending product!
