Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Welcome to Year 7 of our Pan It! Challenge ElleElleG_0-1704168084184.gif

ElleElleG_9-1704168647118.jpeg

The "Rules"

To accommodate a variety of interests, you all are encouraged to pick items to pan that are most suitable to your collections.  For some, this might mean focusing on a particular type of product (like lipstick) and for others this may include a larger variety spanning your entire makeup or skincare routine.

Getting Started (please share the following)

  • Which item(s) you would like to work on
  • How long you will work on said item
  • Goal: explore a new item, revisit an old item, decide whether to keep pass or trash, and/or completely finish item, etc.
  • Starting photo of item

Please Use This Thread To...

  • share what item(s) you are working on,
  • provide comparative progress photos of your item(s) monthly (at the beginning of the month when possible),
  • ask questions,
  • encourage others,
  • motivate others with the looks you create with your item(s)

Tips and Tricks to Panning/Getting Some Use Out of Your Stash:

Spoiler
  • Take photos!!  When you think you aren’t making a dent in anything look back at those photos, I’m certain you’ll see some changes 😃 *this is the number one recommendation for everyone, regardless of how long you’ve been panning! Those photos add up and can help you realize progress you might otherwise overlook.
  • If you goal is to hit pan or use something up entirely, try concentrating your brush/applicator in the same area each time you use it
  • Multitask your products: eyeshadows as highlighter, lipstick as blush, eyeshadow as brow powder, etc.
  • Layer eyeshadow to create different colors (this is especially helpful to get use out of shades you’re not fond of).
  • Have shadows with a ton of fall out?  Use water
  • Watching the progress of others’ can be fun but try not compare your progress to theirs.  We all use our makeup differently and have different goals.
  • Don’t restrict yourself to only using the item(s) you are working on.  It’s more than OK to incorporate other items or take a break!
  • Makeup should be fun….if you begin to dread doing your makeup because you made a commitment to use a product that you now hate, TOSS IT!  Do not force yourself to use up something you don’t like.  Move on to something else!  (This includes excluding particular shades from your goals if focusing on palettes, etc.)

Ideas to Help You Pan Those Items:

Spoiler
  • Roll the dice: number your items and use a random number generator to pick what you will use each (day/week/month/etc.)
  • Layer/Mask: items you are less fond of under things you like
  • Pan a Look: at the beginning of the week pick a look that you can wear everyday
  • Recreate: a look worn by a fellow BICer, celebrity, etc.
  • Spice up an "everyday" look by adding subtle pops of color (in the crease or on the lower lash line, mix lip products to make shades wearable, etc.)

@missjeanie thank you 😊

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

I don’t ever do this but I’m so happy with how this turned out and I’d like to put it out as motivation to use your Project Pan eyeshadows 🥰 My fiancée and I went to a Pittsburgh Pirates baseball game with his family, and the team’s (let’s be honest, the entire city’s) colors are black and yellow. So I used my Urban Decay Metal Mania palette, which does have a gorgeous wet-look metallic gold for all over the lid and a slightly sparkly black shade for eyeliner. Also used the light cream shade first as a priming shade on top of my mini tube of UD Primer Potion. Foundation is the Smashbox Halo Glow in Light Neutral, which I don’t think is quite the right shade but it’s a mini so I’ll finish it off over the course of probably the next couple of months. Mascara is ELF Lash N Roll in brown, brows are ABH Dipbrow Gel in soft brown, and lips are a mini tube of Tarte Maracuja Juicy Lip Balm (whatever the original formulation is called) in Rose. Finished off with a good coat of UD All-Nighter. At any given time, I don’t have a ton of makeup products so I’m kind of always trying to pan/finish everything (especially the never ending samples and minis) so I don’t have super-old products. What really made me happy is the entire look stayed on and didn’t wear off by the time we got home around like 10:30 PM.

I think that if it’s feasible for your routine/lifestyle, always have a palette or some eyeshadow shades incorporated in your Project Pan to get some progress on one of the most difficult products to completely pan—can confirm CrowBrain wants all the sparkly new shadows and then forgets the previous ones that are already shoved on the desk corner or in a drawer, but this was ~exactly~ what I needed and I felt so pretty at the ball game 😁

Not much of an update, but I am pretty proud of my progress on the use it category this month. With the kitten chaos I had set aside my cream highlighters to use during the summer... yeah I didn't. But this month I started to use them again and I almost used all of them. I have 5 left and then it's back to regular powder highlighters.

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@Samtian Kitten chaos sounds like it's totally worth it!

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@missjeanie Oh it is!!

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Great job on getting back on track with your “use it” category and woah!!! 5 cream highlighters left to use, @Samtian?! You got this!!! Out of curiosity, do you have a preference as between cream or powder highlighters?

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@itsfi Thank you! Finished them today. I don't have a preference. As long as it isn't liquid I'm happy. I definitely feel like I'd finish a cream faster than powder. Which is probably true for all products lol.

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

August Check In

Monthly Summary:
Good progress on most things this month. I haven't been reaching much for the YSL quad but that's entirely because I've been very focused on ND Biba Eyeshadow Palette.

August All Stars:
I finished off the little bit of one of the shades in the Westman Atelier Lip Suede Lipstick Palette Les Nudes.and made some headway on the two remaining colors. I've been very surprised how much I've been loving this palette lately, especially this month where it was one of my monthly favorites this month - Monthly Favorites: August 2024 Edition

Next Month's Focus
ND Biba - hoping I might finish the rustic shadow or hit pan on the prairie shade in the next couple of months so I'm going to spend some time with those two beauties in September.

8.2024 Pan - Hair Body Tint.jpg
These beauties ⬆️ are going to be the "slow-and-steady" pan it! products. 🐢 We'll just sit back and chip away at things until we finish it, with that U Beauty skin tint being the one I'll need to put the most effort into using.

8.2024 Pan - Misc.jpg
These two were the dark horses of the bunch when we started this year's pan it! challenge, but here we are - almost 3/4 of the way through the year and very close to being done with both. 😍 I wasn't expecting to even be thinking about finishing up either, let alone both, of these beauties by or before the end of the year, so to see this progress is a happy surprise!

8.2024 Pan - WA Lip.jpg
Another shade from this palette is D-O-N-E; it actually happened fairly early on in the month and I've just been using this palette regularly ever since; hoping to keep up with that cadence going into the fall. 🤞

8.2024 Pan - ND Biba.jpg
And, finally, the last of the shimmer shades in the ND Biba palette that I'm working my way through. I've been mixing together this color and the Sephora Collection translucent loose setting powder (gratis) to speed up the pan progress and it seems to be working. Full pan on this one is becoming more of a possibility which I did not expect.

@itsfi I love those two shades of the Westman lip palette left.  They're very fall feeling!

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Happy almost-September, aka getting into my favorite months of the year!! Since my last update I’ve moved, quit a job that was becoming toxic to my mental health, and I am reinvigorated to do some panning after I a) had all my products boxed away for a few weeks and b) am working on getting my mental state out of the dirt. I can happily say that I finished my little NEST Balinese Coconut rollerball (I ended up adding it to my body cream because the rollerball kept getting stuck). I can’t find my photo of my old fragrance sample lineup, so I took a new one of what I currently have for fragrances AND I have a baby dent in my Juliette Has A Gun Magnolia Bliss! The two Valentino Donna Born In Roma perfumes are basically still full and I haven’t touched the Not A Perfume sample, so will update at the end of the year. I am making a concerted effort to use my eyeshadow products, even if I’m only at home—for the most part, I swipe on some sort of lid shade and then use something dark and/or sparkly for eyeliner. I use Tarte Park Ave Princess bronzer and a mini Tarte Amazonian Clay Blush (shade Seduce) as eyeshadow bases because they work well for that purpose on me and these pans will last forever. My palette is Urban Decay Metal Mania—I genuinely like this palette but it appears to be discontinued. I have a handful of Laura Mercier and ELF shadow sticks too. We’ll see how much progress I make on those fronts!
