Welcome to Year 7 of our Pan It! Challenge
The "Rules"
To accommodate a variety of interests, you all are encouraged to pick items to pan that are most suitable to your collections. For some, this might mean focusing on a particular type of product (like lipstick) and for others this may include a larger variety spanning your entire makeup or skincare routine.

Past Panning Challenges:
@itsfi Wow! You are doing an awesome job!!! Too bad the hair oil fell but it adds more room in your collection and you don’t have to worry about using it!!! And on to better oils like the Ouai oil!
@ather, thank you. It was bittersweet about the hair oil. On the one hand, I’m happy to move on and choose another product. On the other hand, I was making slow and steady progress with it, and by the looks of how things were going, I had a chance, maybe a bit of a stretch chance, of finishing or coming close to finishing the entire bottle by the end of the year.
I’m coming to the conclusion that my hair type is not the ideal one for pre-wash hair oils. Or, at least not the ones I’ve tried to date. Which is helpful because I will (hopefully) remember that should I be tempted to pick one up. Go for a sample or deluxe sample size first when it comes to these types of products. Remind me again, is there a pre-wash hair oil you are fond of?
@itsfi I haven’t found one I love to be set on it forever. But right now I am using JVN Complete Pre-Wash Scalp & Hair Strengthening Treatment Oil 1.7 oz / 50 ml I like it. I feel like my scalp isn’t dry and feels nice. But I think there may only be room for one scalp serum in my stash. I think the OUAI Hydrating Scalp Serum for Healthy, Fuller Looking Hair 2 oz / 60 mL is the one that wins. Since I have super thin hair I have to make sure I get all the oil out of my scalp is greasy and it’s hard to hide. But maybe I haven’t found the right one yet. I have use the Fable and mane one but the scent was almost to strong for me. And I put it in before bed and wash in the morning. So the strong scent was a bit more than I like. I do like Drunk Elephant T.L.C. Happi Scalp™ Scrub 6.0 oz/ 180 mL i feel like it really cleanses my scalp too but can leave it a little dry. Hmmm more research needed 😊
My hair does respond well to many of the JVN hair products so I may give that one a try some day @ather. Probably not soon though; I’m not sure my hair was meant for pre-wash hair oils. I did find a foil sample of one by Ranavat so I shall plan to give that a try before the end of the month. Oh, that Ouai serum is a beauty; need to use that more frequently.
I remember that Drunk Elephant came out with a hair care line a few years ago but I don’t recall ever trying engraving from that range, though I have a feeling I have some samples from it. I like their D-Bronzi a lot; and their marula oil is nice. I have a vague recollection of a hair scrub I liked but for the life of me, I can’t remember the name, which makes me wonder just how much I liked it? Maybe Christophe Robin? Or DpHue? 🤔
@itsfi The JVN might work for you! It’s hard to say! I do like the JVN line! I think there’s only room in my stash for one and Ouai has won my heart ♥️
Hmmm 🤔 I feel like there isn’t many scrubs out there! I remember using the SC apple cider vinegar one and liked how clean it made my hair feel but I feel like the DE one is smaller granules and easier to rinse out. And really cleans my scalp!
Hmmm, I wonder if I just made it up in my head then, @ather? 😂 The OUAI Hydrating Scalp Serum for Healthy, Fuller Looking Hair 2 oz / 60 mL is definitely a 👍🏼 for me. I like their hair oil too but am partial to the Oribe nourishing oil. Maybe I’ll remember the hair scrub I was thinking of later. I do know that I want to try the Ceremonia Papaya Scalp Scrub Shampoo 8 oz / 236 mL.
@itsfi Ooo the Ceremonia may be a nice one. I wonder how it would compare to the Briogeo Scalp Revival Charcoal + Coconut Oil Micro-exfoliating Scalp Scrub Shampoo 8 oz/ 236 mL
You’re truly the queen of panning eyeshadows @itsfi @I want my eyeshadows to look liked those. Maybe sometime this year. Fingers and toes cross 😘
@blackkitty2014, I've no doubt that you will pan your eyeshadows. You've hit pan on so many products in your Tom Ford palette and are and have always been so good with using your products - the proof is in your updates, which are always great and inspiring to see.
@itsfi I can see massive dent in prairie! As you've been working through Biba have you noticed your preferences for shades change as you've been concentration on certain ones? Or are they still shades you just aren't as interested in as some of the others that you worked though quicker?
I've been eying the Hanni Water Balm. I seem to recall having a spray body lotion at some point in time and wonder if I'd be more apt to use a body lotion that way.
Excellent progress this month!!
Thanks @missjeanie; that's really nice of you to say. That dent seems more "meh" than massive to me, but I concede it could be that I see it everyday and think, "why have you not moved?!" 😅
That's a great question. Let's go back to the very beginning - here she is, Biba, in all her glory ...
Goodness gracious, my Biba palette does not look like this at all anymore. It's so much more ragged looking, as @CookieGirl1 very aptly described some of the eyeshadow pans now.
When I first started to pan, I figured I'd mostly be using the following shadows:
Hilarious in hindsight that I actually thought prarie would be one of the shades I'd gravitate towards and it's now the last shadow on which I'm trying to hit pan. At the time, I liked looking at sparkly shades, but I didn't like them on me. It was too much for my everyday look. Or, so I thought.
The lockdown and this pan it! challenge really shifted a lot of things for me. From a beauty perspective, it changed the way I went about buying things - slowly, but surely. I mean, it took me 2 years to fully pan that tusk shade (last row, last shadow)!!! And I was using that shade pretty much every single day in one way or another - by itself, as a base, as a transition color, etc. Needless to say, it caused me to think more carefully about purchasing palettes - I mean, I continued to do so but it's been pulled back a lot more. I'm also more thoughtful about it; less FOMO when it comes to eyeshadow purchases.
In addition to learning to work with more shimmery shadows and at times, preferring those more than some of the matte shades in the Biba palette, I also moved from warmer nudes / browns to preferring more neutral or neutral-cool ones, or discovering more shadows / palettes that fit in the latter category.
P.S. As for the Hanni Water Balm Instant Hydration Body Moisturizer Mist 6.76 oz / 200 mL, get it! 💖 Though I technically purchased it in December, 2023, I didn't really start using it until this year and I have to say, one of my best discoveries of the year. My legs and limbs are dry, dry, and dry. Even so, I'm not always the best on applying lotion or oil coming out of the shower. This mist has made it easy to do so in the sense that I just have to reach for it and spritz here and there. Easy peasy. Just have to be careful with it being a glass bottle but I think they changed that with the newer versions. Another layer of cream or lotion is best in the cooler months but this could be all I need in the summer - there have been nights this spring when I've just used the Hanni.
@itsfi I suspected seeing how long shadows would take to use up would slow your purchases... watching you has slowed MY purchases! lol. Interesting to see how preferences change over the course of one palette though! I'm so tempted to try this with something larger in my stash... but oufff... panning shadows, not for the faint of heart!
@missjeanie, it's been a journey to say the least, with making my way through the full size Biba palette. lol, there's definitely a deterring effect for me as far as purchasing goes, seeing how long it takes to work through eyeshadows. 😲 I don't have enough eyelids to use up all my current shadows 🤣 and yet, I have a feeling I will at some point pick up more shadows (that's the truth) , but I will aim to be more strategic and thoughtful about it. I'm thinking for me personally, smaller palettes, quads make a good fit; or, I should say quints as Dior does quints and I have a good amount of Dior products I've accumulated over the past few years. 😍
Yeah, but for that lockdown, I would not have even attempted to pan this palette - I needed something to focus on and stick to, and eyeshadow from the full size Biba, every single day - every. single. day - at least for the first year and most of the second, was that something. 😅 I'm focusing on those prarie and rustic shades for these last 7 months of the year - the shine shade I feel will work through itself just given my natural tendency to reach for that shade out of these three. My next "hmmm, maybe I'll try that" approach to use more of these shades is to take some product from their pans and make cream eyeshadow out of them - either 3 different creams or one with a mix of all 3. 🤔 I have my vitamin E oil, rubbing alcohol and plastic jars so I just need to decide what I'd like to try my hand at, and when.
@itsfi ohhhhh diy cream shadows you say… well this is a project I think you should document!
Will do @missjeanie. Probably a project for next weekend. 🤞 I am seeing upsides to it - I can use the cream shadow, of course, but I can also use the powder to set the cream shadow - that's 2 uses of the product = closer to hitting pan / full pan. 😂 Strategy comes in handy at this stage, lol.
I'm so thrilled at the progress you've made @itsfi Seriously keeps me going on my products.
Awww! Likewise @AznAngelLiz! You are so good and disciplined with using what you have - it's inspiring and helps me to stay focused on my pan items as well. You pick some things that are challenging to use up and you stick with it. Powder products take a lot of time, or at least in my experience, and what? You have a trio with that Hourglass palette and then the bronzer. Woowhee! You go girl!
Oh that is a bummer it spilled all over your rug, @itsfi but now it's gone lol
Yeah, I was halfway through with it too @lmaster. I came home after being away for a couple of days and went to wash up and what’s this bottle doing here? 😳
Have you used pre-wash hair oils? I’m getting the feeling these pre-wash hair oils are better suited for certain hair types - my hair is on the fine side and it doesn’t work as well for me as for those with thicker, more lush hair.
I've used oils for pre wash but they were now specifically named that @itsfi yeah I think curly hair benefits more so, at least in my experience
@itsfi Whooo amazing progress!!! Always blowing me away.
