What is a capsule makeup collection?
A capsule makeup collection is a selection of makeup products that can be used to put together different looks for a variety of occasions. For some of us, that may mean a group of essential products for your everyday look plus a few extra items for a more glam or dramatic look; and, for others of us, that may mean, a lineup of our holy grail product(s) in each makeup category. My ideal capsule makeup collection probably falls somewhere in between - we'll (hopefully) find out at the end of the year! I don't see myself as a minimalist, but I don't have an extensive collection of makeup either. I appreciate the collections of people who fall within both camps but I float somewhere in between - on the one hand, my brow product collection would earn a gold star if we were using a minimalist approach to makeup; my lip product lineup, on the other hand, would not. 🤣 It would most definitely not.
Why have a capsule makeup collection?
Everyone will have their own reasons for having (or not having) a more streamlined makeup collection. Over the years, I've just become more interested in having less beauty products on hand (well, except for lip products, lol) - a handful of items I use or reach for more frequently with maybe a few additional products that are go-to's for me for special events or occasions. Don't get me wrong, I love trying new products and I don't see that changing. I just like the idea of having a simpler collection (I appreciate that "simpler" can be relative), curated to my needs and lifestyle.
Why weekly?
A few years ago, beauty & lifestyle blogger Serein Wu, did a weekly series (on her blog and YouTube channel), Makeup Bag Monday, where she rotated her makeup bag each week with new product launches and makeup already in her collection. Every Monday, she shared the products she selected for the upcoming week and provided detailed makeup reviews on the makeup she used for the previous week. I may not post detailed reviews, but will at least try to include a weekly recap (probably at the end of the week) of what products I like and which ones didn't work for me. If weekly works for you, great. If not, feel free to join in based on what works best for you.
What if I don't have enough products to fit the theme for a full face?
No need for your entire makeup capsule to fit the weekly theme(s). Just one will do. And, even if you don't have one that fits squarely within a theme, feel free to post your makeup capsule. We'd love to see what you're using and hear your feedback on the products as you put them to use.
@itsfi Not being able to swatch the Ami Cole may be the only reason I don't pick them up... And I suspect the JP taupes may join me this year... I wore the Nudes today and it's peachier than it looked in store, nothing wrong with that... but I'm more into the cooler taupes I think.
I actually have a few declutters already in my empties for this month, slightly cheater products (Older SPF's) but it's products none the less. I'm going to try and and pick out a few things every month that need to go. Try.... being the key word! lol. You're influencing me both to add to my stash and remove from it at the same time.
@missjeanie, I think you will like The Taupes - it's got that moody, cool tone that I like in neutrals.
All you have to do is try! And, yes, declutters are declutters.
"You're influencing me both to add to my stash and remove from it at the same time." Ohhh, me??!!! I dunno. Maybe it's my superheroine power? Hahahaha! Add and subtract - that somehow evens it all out and makes it good, right? 😆
@itsfi lol... you're a superheroine in my books!! And yes, I can officially tell you you've got balanced debits and credits which makes me smile! Though if we're talking over the years here... I'll have to do a LOT more decluttering lol
Lol, I feel like there are many of us who have a lot more decluttering to do @missjeanie! Easy to accumulate all this stuff but so hard to let it go!! I’ve gotten to the point where once I’ve decided to declutter it, I need to take a pic quickly and then drop it in the trash or send it way to its new home post-haste. Before I have time to change my mind and bring it back into the fold. 😝
That's a great strategy @itsfi ! Out of sight out of mind is much better than having it hanging around too long.
Oh I learned the hard way @missjeanie. 🤦🏻♀️ would have stuff in boxes 📦 and then suddenly they ended back in my drawers or makeup bags. Noooo! So now, I pull out the things to declutter the same day I have to take out the trash 🗑️ Done!!
Oooh, I'm stealing that idea @itsfi (sort of) of 1 decluttered item a week. Makes it doable.
Do it @danielledanielle! I’m ratcheting it up a notch with trying to declutter products; otherwise, I’ll just hem and haw over a product until it’s about 80% done and then I’ll be of the mindset that I only have a little left and should just finish it. 😝
Personal goal moving forward is one product per week (or 4-5 per month). I’m sure some months will be better than others, but it’s worth a try. I’ll revisit this approach at the end of May to see if it’s a cadence I can keep up or if I need to make adjustments.
Sounds like everything went really well with your capsule last week. @itsfi I fully agree, your Beauty Bakeries brushes look so adorable! 😍 And you successfully decluttered a couple of items. I'm sorry too hear your lippie tried to turn Fuschia on you thou.
Danessa's skin tint is an every day staple for me, it makes me smile too see someone else enjoy it too. My favorite thing about the tiny is your little you need for it to work. I feel like my tube is going to last me a good long time. 😉
@CynthieLu, curious to know, do you use a primer under the DM Yummy Skin tint? If so, would love to know what primer(s) you like to pair with the tint.
Right now, if I'm using a primer it's either E.L.F's putty primer or Smashbox Mini Photo Finish Control Mattifying Face Primer with Salicylic Acid .34 oz / 10 mL . I don't always feel the need to use a primer with this one thou, I like the tint on it's own over a serum like Danessa Myricks Beauty Yummy Skin Glow Serum with Hyaluronic Acid & Niacinamide Juice Boost or Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Ultra-Fine Mist 2.53 oz/ 75 mL. The tint has behaved well with any of these for me. The only place that gives me trouble is where my glasses rest on my nose, it always unsettles any makeup it touches over the course of a day. 🤗 @itsfi
Week 6 - Black Founded/Owned Beauty Brands Makeup Capsule (continued even further)
It will come as no surprise to most, if not everyone, that I have a healthy collection of lip products. I've decluttered quite a few items over the years but there's probably more that I can let go of - probably more won't likely translate to a lot more being decluttered though; it's probably going to be the hardest category to whittle down. The beauty sponges from Beauty Bakerie are among my favorites.
About the Brands - Lip Product and Tools: More info on Black founded / owned beauty brands I'm using in my capsule this week that I haven't yet shared about.
@itsfi Thank you for researching and sharing these stories about the two brands. I really need to check out Beauty Bakerie. Their packaging is so unique and cute. I hear you about having a 'healthy' lip collection. I feel like mine may be a little bit out of control. Hopefully I can find some more to declutter..
@Mellmars1185, I’m pretty sure the lip category is the largest of all the beauty categories in my entire stash - lip balms, lip oils, lipsticks, lip gloss, and on and on! 💋 Any idea how you might go about decluttering your lip stash a little more?
@itsfi Yes..me too! Right now I have items that don't have a home. I think if I start to come up with a bettet organizational system it may help. I know that I have been hanging on to some older items that I have not worn at all in the past few years and they just need to go. But I feel like they might have a use because I have learned how to layer productsin better now. It is so hard!! I think the 100 Days of Lipstick Challenge helps. However, I have noy destashed anything for a while from that challenge. This challenge is also helpful to destash. Maybe I will try to include a lippies in my future capsules that do not get much use for the purpose of testing before destashing. I have not seen the movie Frozen, but a song just popped up in my head...."Let it go, let it go". Is that what it is called if anyone knows what I am referring to 🎶?
You are a very good writer @itsfi. That was informative and interesting to read. I didn't know these brands or those little facts about them. Thank you so much for putting that together for us 💓🙏
@CynthieLu, thank you. I love learning about a brand and its founders / owners' story. 😀 Happy to share that with others.
