What is a makeup capsule?

A makeup capsule is a collection of makeup products curated by you with the intent of simplifying your makeup routine without compromising quality or functionality. It typically includes essential products that can be used to create a variety of look. A makeup capsule can reduce clutter, help save time getting ready in the morning or for events, and provide you with a streamlined and versatile makeup wardrobe tailored to work for you, your budget and lifestyle. While makeup capsules generally include a few pieces, the size of your capsule collection is ultimate up to you.

Why a makeup capsule challenge?

Many of us here have a robust collection of makeup and it can be difficult to pare that down to a handful of pieces for capsule. This challenge, with its weekly themes, is meant as a fun way to try your hand at curating a makeup capsule for yourself. Each week you'll have an opportunity to go through your collection, identify one or more product(s) that fits the weekly theme (all you need is one product for this challenge), and put together a makeup look with that and other products.

The challenge is also another way to use your makeup stash, allowing you a chance to discover products you might have missed out on or re-discover past favorites. If you're looking to use or work through more of your beauty collection beyond just makeup, the Shop Your Stash Challenge: The Spring 2025 Edition or Pan It! - 2026 Challenge may be worth a look.

Week 20 The  Mental Health Awareness Makeup Capsule

Catching up with last week's capsule, or what was planned for last week's capsule. I only used most of these items one day last week; it was really the bare minimum in terms of makeup - CCC cream, blonzer, curled lashes without mascara, and lip color of some sort.

20 - Mental Health Awareness + AAPI.jpg

* Primer: Live Tinted Huegurad Glotion SPF 50 - Dewy Mineral Sunscreen Glow - this has broken into my Top 5 SPFs which hasn't otherwise changed in years. Maybe I need to make it a Top 6? 😅 with ONE/SIZE by Patrick Starrr Mini Secure The Sweat Waterproof Mattifying Primer 0.33 oz / 10 mL on just my nose.

* Base: The plan was to alternate between the CLE CCC Cream (one of my favorites; this is my 3rd (?) tube) and the Gucci 24 Hour Full Coverage Luminous Matte Finish Foundation which has become the only full coverage foundation I've decided to keep in my collection; all unopen / unused full coverage foundations have been donated and any open ones (which there's been few, maybe 2?) have been either decluttered or are in the process of being rehomed if the packaging permits that being done in as hygienic and sanitary way possible.

* Concealer: Tower 28 Beauty Swipe All-Over Hydrating Serum Concealer with 18-HR Wear  for AAPI month and because it's been working well for my undereyes.

* Bronzer: MAKEUP BY MARIO SoftSculpt Transforming Skin Enhancer® (gratis)

* Blush: BiotechBeauty BiomeBlush - Magnetic Mauve (blush/blonzer) or Finding Ferdinand Tender Blush - Skinny Dip

* Highlighter: Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez Positive Light Liquid Luminizer Highlight (gifted) or when I just want a soft sheen / glisten effect, Tatcha The Serum Stick Line-Smoothing Treatment & Touch Up Balm 0.28 / 8g

* Brows: Ami Colé Eyebrow in Dark Brown (discontinued) - this has become my favorite product from the brand. If Diarrha decided to do another makeup line, I would love to see her bring this beauty back .. and possibly include a taupe or ash shade.

* Lips: Alternate between EADEM Le Chouchou Exfoliating + Softening Peptide Lip Balm Boba Bounce or the combo of Rokael Beauty Redefined Lip Shader - Marked and Rebirth Tinted Whipped Lip Oil - Ecstasy, my favorite lip pairing for a nude lip - it was hard, if not impossible, to find something that didn't wash me out, until this dynamic duo came on my radar. Shout out to @peculiarzmakeup for introducing us to Rokael Beauty!

(old photo)(old photo)

It all fits neatly into this poofy pillowy pouch from Rare Beauty, in keeping with the week's them and May being Mental Health Awareness Month.

NOTE: One last week (and a couple/few days) to go. I modified the theme to include the option for a "BIC Inspired Makeup Capsule" and extending the duration for the capsule through the first few days of June as we say a final farewell to the Forum.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge 2026

Mental Health Brands x AAPI faves

1000010597.jpg

I didn't want it to be all Rare Beauty (nothing wrong with that, just felt like I've done that).. I've come to the realization I don't like that eye palette, as I only pull it out during a theme.  Have to figure out how and where to re-homeit, since I've swatched it.  I've included Haus Labs, AAPI faves and some shop your stash items, which feels good for my mental health 😂

Fragrance was interesting, made sense to include Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez Rare Eau de Parfum Vanilla and Caramel Travel Spray .34 fl oz/10 ml eau ... of course, but also things I remember just loving, loving I fell hard for/loved Atelier Cologne just a little before they announced closure, so there's this joy in wearing Vanilla Insenseé.  Also, there's that little summery lime note in it 🫶🏽.  And Maison Margiela 'REPLICA' Beach Walk Eau de Toilette with Coconut Milk & Musk 3.4 oz/ 100 mL eau de ...  but when it was a little more sunscreen-y and a rollerball 👀

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge 2026

Ahhhh @danielledanielle, Atelier Cologne ...  I remember wanting that fragrance house to join Sephora and then one day seeing it there!!! 😍 So sad to see it leave North America. I'm going to have to check to see if I have a mini or just a sample size left of Vanilla Intensee and if the latter if there's any product left by now.

Ooouh, which Hung Vanngo beauties are those? Blush and bronzer?

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge 2026

Week 19 - The (Mostly) Devil Wears Prada (2) Makeup Capsule

The plan was to go with a bevy of looks inspired by characters from the sequel but I started not feeling so great (not allergies) Sunday evening so we're hitting pause on that and keeping things simple on the makeup front. But, in an ode to the film, we have a capsule featuring mostly Prada with a hint of Dior - I mean, Emily Charlton does start off the film at Dior, after all.

19 - Feature Focus - Prada 1.jpeg

19 - Feature Focus - Prada 2.jpeg

Just going to keep it in this adorable little Prada shopping bag. Everything looks so nice in it and the bag seems to have found a spot on the table top already. 😉  If I were to amp up the look, I'd include a couple of the Prada eyeshadow palettes, using some colors as eyeshadow and some as bronzer. I *may* break open the Prada mascara, too. Here's hoping I can give my other TDWP2 inspired ensemble a wear later this week, maybe Thursday or Friday? 🤞 If I do, I'll put it up on The Fit, The Fab and The Face: Outfit and Inspo Thread

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge 2026

1000010056.jpg

I think this is one of my favorite capsules apart from some of my BoBs

Because Red can signal joy, prosperity and vitality in AAPI cultures (correct me if I'm wrong, please and also, I'm lazy) I kept last week's for going

@danielledanielle , #Samesies ️ I Keep A Bag Of #Caudalíe For Emergency Use Only 😉

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge 2026

💯 on the red @danielledanielle, a traditionally favored colored among many AAPI cultures, symbolizing all those things and luck as well.

Week 18 - The  AAPI Founded / Owned Beauty Brands Makeup Capsule

18 - AAPI 1a.jpg

Complexion:

Eyes

I can't tell whether my allergies are coming or going so there's a chance I won't even get around to using either of these products.

Cheeks:

Lips:

And a few extra AAPI-founded beauties to play with this week.

18 - AAPI 1b.jpg

18 - AAPI 2a.jpg

18 - AAPI 2b.jpg

Everything fits nicely and neatly in this pouch with a Chinoisserie-style print. Fitting for the weekly prompt and AAPI Heritage Month, Chinese-era or otherwise. 😉  If I hadn't packed it full, I could use it as a clutch/handbag.  Ahhh, maybe for a OOTD for The Fit, The Fab and The Face: Outfit and Inspo Thread 💡

Going a slightly different route with my capsules this month. Products with a  next to their names (including this week's entire blush choices) will be used monthly. With the exception of next week, my capsules for the rest of the month will likely just have the lip products (and sometimes the eyeshadow) tying in to the weekly theme. That's more in keeping with how I tend to use my makeup collection - I stick to the same few complexion, cheek and eye products for a period of time but my lip color choices change most often.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge 2026

Man, @itsfi .... This made me think of other goats, I feel like AAPI brands are now starting to get the hype they've earned.  Like .. HOW DID I FORGET ANNA 🤯 ?!?!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge 2026

Once I work through a few more makeup items in my collection, I’ll do a deeper dive into products from Kulfi and Hung Vanngo Beauty. I sometimes second guess myself with Anna @danielledanielle because when I think of the Anna Sui aesthetic in her makeup and fashion line, I often get British vibes so I have to do a little research to confirm my initial instincts that she is a pioneer among AAPI founded beauty and fashion brands. ❤️

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge 2026

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge 2026

I’m envious of your Prada collection, @danielledanielle! 💕

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge 2026

@curlychiquita , wut?!?! Thank you.  It's mutual, like I look at your LaMer, kerastase and Tom Ford like 🥰👀

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge 2026

Love, love, looooving your shop your Prada stash @danielledanielle and, of course, your Prada haul. I'm waiting on one last Prada beauty to trickle in to complete what will hopefull be the final "The Devil Wears Prada 2" inspired haul; well, beauty haul, that is.

About that Prada perfume, how strong are the "musky" notes in it? Is it more earthy and animalic? Or more leathery or like a more synthetic, white musk sort of smell?

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge 2026

My sense of smell is blunted (thanks global warning for making spring allergy-rific) so I get the amber more so than the musk.  @itsfi the way I perceive the musk is like an extension of the amber.  Kind of like how you can still smell an old school fragrance like White Diamonds for quite sometime... If that makes sense?

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge 2026

Wow, that is an old school reference @danielledanielle - I keep getting flashes of the Elizabeth Taylor commercial playing in my brain "These have always brought me luck" 😂 Sorry to hear about the allergies, completely understand.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge 2026

Week 17 - The Makeup-Artist-Founded/Owned Beauty Brand Makeup Capsule (with a sprinkling of spring savings sale splurges)

17 - MUA Capsule 1.jpg

All but the mascara is from a makeup artist founded / owned brand. 🙌 I included a pretty full set of of eye products, just in case, but I'm not sure how much I'll be able to get to them.

= GOAT, Top Shelf, or favorite product

🛍= new product from the Sephora spring savings event

Base:

  • Setting Powder: RMS Beauty Hydra Setting Powder (Light)

Eyes:

Cheeks:

Lips:

A different lip shade every day this week 😘

Brushes:

  • Mix of brushes from LYS Beauty and Wayne Goss.

Even kept with the makeup-artist founded/owned brand theme with my fits this week, making a repeat appearance here, from Sonia Kashuk. I don't think I've ever tried any of her makeup products but I have a bevy of her brushes, blenders and bags.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge 2026

So many good founders! @itsfi  I'm glad to see some of your reoccurring faves, but some new members (👋🏽 there HUNG VANNGO BEAUTY Glossy Lip Hue Hydrating Lip Shine with Hyaluronic Acid )

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge 2026

I've been eyeing those HVB lip balm/glosses since I heard they were coming out and held off until the sale and then, I restrained myself and stuck with just the one. We'll see how long that lasts @danielledanielle but for now I'm very happy with it. There's also a ton of product in this. 👍

I've made dents and hit pan on my pan it! items and my shop my stash products, and have been fairly good not bad not too bad with my purchases so far this year so I'm pulling out more of the newness more often.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge 2026

Week 16 (April 20 - 26) - The "Going Green" Makeup Capsule

For "green" week I chose to go with a capsule made up a products that cause my wallet to be lightened of some green bills, lol. It's been a capsule I've been doing since the first capsule challenge and I enjoy putting it together. It lets me spend time in the luxe lane of my beauty collection. Some years it's been a medley of brands, other years have focused on just one brand. We're going with the latter approach this year, with the brand spotlight on one of my favorite houses, Dior.

I tried to keep it as streamlined as I could while still giving myself some options should I find I need or want them. Nothing here is new to me or new to this capsule challenge, except perhaps one of the fragrances (not shown).
16 - Green 1.jpg

Spoiler
BASE:
I've been keeping my makeup pretty pared down lately and being pretty specific where I apply product. It's often been just sunscreen and concealer, occasionally a skin tint or light coverage foundation to even skintone on my cheek, as far as my base goes. Allergy side effects like watery eyes and nose blowing throughout the day means my makeup wears off so I've been keeping it pretty simple.

Primer: DIOR Dior Forever Glow Veil Makeup Primer 1oz / 30ml has become a well liked primer in my collection. This is my second or third bottle. With decluttering, organizing and trying to curate a makeup collection that suits me, I'm trying to figure out how many primers I really need - I'm thinking, at least 2 but no more than 5. This probably wouldn't make it if my number is 2 but it would definitely be in if I settled at 5.

Concealer: DIOR Backstage Concealer or DIOR Dior Forever Skin Correct Full-Coverage Concealer - the latter I have in a few shades.

Setting Powder: DIOR Forever Natural Velvet Matte Compact Foundation (depotted from a discontinued face palette) says it's a medium coverage foundation but even though it's lightweight and airy when worn, it looks more full coverage to me at just 2 light layers. It blurs very well, making my complexion look flawless, almost like I'm walking around with a filter, which can be good or bad, depending on the look you're going after.  This I primarily use for setting but with my allergies, I've been wearing it more as a powder foundation since it's easier and more convenient to touch up any product that rubs off when I blow my nose. .

EYES:
I may not get to wearing eye products this week due to allergies. My eyes are just watering a lot more than usual this year. 😒

Eyeshadow: DIOR Diorshow 5 Couleurs Couture Eyeshadow Palette 647 Silk Taupe (limited edition) - I picked up two quints from this collection when it released because of the Cannage pattern of the packaging, which is my favorite print across the entire Dior house. As it turns out, the creamy and blendable formulation on these are similar to the OG Dior eyeshadow formulation and that is a beautiful thing.

Eye LinersDIOR Diorshow Waterproof Liquid Liner in green and navy (mine are of the older iteration, which have more of a satin finish than the pearly finish of the current liners). The green liner is included here for "green" week, of course, but also because it's probably coming up on its time - it's starting to dry out (I think the cap may have fallen off, briefly, but enough for it to be less intense and vibrant than before); I can refresh the color but lately, each refresh has resulted in a softer color payoff than the last, so its days are sadly numbered.

Mascara: DIOR Diorshow Iconic Overcurl Waterproof Mascara Black has been a favorite in my collection for years. For a time, I'd probably would have counted it as the favorite. Still in the top but no longer my #1 in this category.

CHEEKS
I've been reaching for more color for my cheeks lately, to add a little more life to my face as it's been looking a little drained and dull at times (I blame allergies). A few of the BIC beauties here have embarked on a "use the good stuff" adventure when it comes to their beauty collection and I've (tried to) adopted that approach when it comes to my foil samples and have been trying to work my way through my makeup foil samples, including this set of 3 blister packets of cheek products - DIOR Forever Glow Maximizer Longwear Liquid Highlighter 014 Rosy (blush); DIOR Forever Glow Maximizer Longwear Liquid Highlighter 013 Gold (highlight) and DIOR Forever Glow Maximizer Longwear Liquid Highlighter 016 Bronze (bronzer).  I doubt I'll use up this sample pack this month but I'll be happy if I can get in some good use this month of the blush and bronze shades - I'll use the highlight shade but sparingly and lightly as a gold highlighter is not my typical go-to.

LIPS:

Liner: Dior offers one of the best long-wearing lip liners on the market in my opinion, and it's one of the smoothest and least drying. For this week, I'll rotate among a few shades, none of which seem to be the shades available at Sephora. 🤔 Dior Rouge Dior Contour Lip Liner in 100 Nude Look (not shown - I also have the older version of this shade), a pinky nude/brown shade, 259 Nude Ribbon, a more muted mid-tone pink, and 329 Nude Blush, a soft, warm dusty pink.

Balm: DIOR Lip Glow Butter Hydrating Gloss Balm 104 Black Cherry or Dior Lip Glow Color Reviver Balm (shown in skin prep photo, below). The former didn't go over so well when it was released, and I get that given the price tag, but, although it's not my most favorite lip product, I do enjoy the color and consistency.

Lip Oil: DIOR Lip Glow Oil Hydrating High-Shine Gloss - this is from the previous version, in the current collection, the same finish is part of the Juicy range and the equivalent would be DIOR Lip Glow Oil Hydrating High-Shine Gloss 001 Pink. Dior still makes one of the best lip oils around - nourishing and now with different finishes to choose from.

TOOLS:
Brushes and eyelash curler (not shown) are from Dior. I don't have all of the brushes from the collection, a few of the face brushes and just the couple of eyeshadow brushes I need. I'm pretty sure I have the lip brush somewhere, just not with the other Dior brushes when I went to pull them.

FRAGRANCE
Allergy season hasn't (yet) made me super sensitive to scents; that may come later. This week, my fragrance choices are bookends in the J'adore section of the Dior fragrance library - the original Dior J'adore Eau de Parfum - Dior | Sephora
and the newest addition to that series, DIOR J'adore Intense.

My skincare prep before makeup application:
16 - Green 0.jpg
Spoiler
This transition from winter to spring has been slightly rougher on my skin than usual, in that my lips and skin have needed exfoliation of some sort a little more often.

DIOR Capture Dreamskin 1-Minute Mask 2.5 oz / 75 mL remains a go-to skin prep mask. Most days I apply this just on my lower T-zone and along the jawlines but it works beautifully all over the face as well.

Dior Addict Lip Sugar Scrub, a sugar based scrub with the granules scattered throughout the balm making application easier and less harsh or rough on the skin. It's convenient to keep in the bag and use throughout the day when my lips are chapped or beginning to do so.

Dior Addict Lip Glow Color Reviver Balm 038 Soft Nude, a great stick balm with just the slightest hint of color. I use it as skin prep and a lip color.

DIOR Lip Maximizer Serum 0.17 oz/ 5mL, the usual follow up to the lip scrub, this serum is hydrating and plumping without the zinging that most lip plumpers have. Thicker in consistency than the lip maximizer balms but it feels like a balm once it dries down.

And for fits, we have this linen, jute-like fiber Dior makeup bag from a gwp a few years back that remains one of my favorite makeup bags. I just like the look, feel and shape of it. It can also double as a clutch (though probably a heavy one if this capsule is included in there along with my ID, keys and Touchland hand sanitizer). 😂
