What is a makeup capsule?

A makeup capsule is a collection of makeup products curated by you with the intent of simplifying your makeup routine without compromising quality or functionality. It typically includes essential products that can be used to create a variety of look. A makeup capsule can reduce clutter, help save time getting ready in the morning or for events, and provide you with a streamlined and versatile makeup wardrobe tailored to work for you, your budget and lifestyle. While makeup capsules generally include a few pieces, the size of your capsule collection is ultimate up to you.

Why a makeup capsule challenge?

Many of us here have a robust collection of makeup and it can be difficult to pare that down to a handful of pieces for capsule. This challenge, with its weekly themes, is meant as a fun way to try your hand at curating a makeup capsule for yourself. Each week you'll have an opportunity to go through your collection, identify one or more product(s) that fits the weekly theme (all you need is one product for this challenge), and put together a makeup look with that and other products.

The challenge is also another way to use your makeup stash, allowing you a chance to discover products you might have missed out on or re-discover past favorites. If you're looking to use or work through more of your beauty collection beyond just makeup, the Shop Your Stash Challenge: The Spring 2025 Edition or Pan It! - 2026 Challenge may be worth a look.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge 2026

Yay for shopping your stash with the Fenty @danielledanielle; it'll be fun to bring in your new Danessa palette. What's the Anna Sui item? The packaging is pretty, very Anna. 😊

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge 2026

@itsfi .... That issssss (goes to look it up, because I can't remember any product names anymore) .....Loose Face Powder 300.  Exactly what I would call it 🤣😅... Anyhow, it's a pink powder, I think they released the lavender first (?). It brightens nicely when I'm tanned or my foundation is too warm.  The case I love, and bought it prior to the powder... Didn't realize that the bottom was a part of the refill.  😅. The I got the refill when they released the link version.

TY! I think I'm down to 1/3 of the foundation 😯.... Fighting the urge everyday to NOT repurchase, but I likely will, I do like it... But there's still 1357743 unopened foundations and samples to work with

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge 2026

Ahhh, I have the lavendar one @danielledanielle, but mine may be an older (?) version, entirely possible. The packaging looks different than yours. Yep, get that. I'm putting my head down and working through as much as my collection of foundations as I can before picking up anything new, or that's what I've told myself. I want to at least get through a handful of my skin tints. That shoud clear a lot of shelf space for me. 🤣

Week 8, Throwback Capsule x Ami Colé

1000007260.jpg

There's a lot of Danessa here, but I didn't get to use a lot of the goodness and I didn't want to move on.  I also added my Brown Girl Jane reward into the mix

Return of the Ami bag 🖤🤎

1000007263.jpg

Closing was never the goal... Not even an option 🤣

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge 2026

lol, "closing was never the goal" I mean, abundance is considered a good thing during Lunar New Year so it's all on theme @danielledanielle😉  Oooouh, those Ami Colé lip glosses 😍 Do you have all of them?

And did you see the new fragrance coming from Brown Girl Jane? "Velvet Peach, Bellini Nectar, Vanilla Bourbon" Ummmm, yes!! 5 more days ...

BROWN GIRL Jane Peach Aura Eau de Parfum 1.7/50ml eau de parfum spray

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge 2026

I do! @itsfi ... From Excellence to Victory to Poise 🥲

BGJ: And I didn't 😯👀

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge 2026

Week 8 The Throwback Makeup Capsule

For my throwback capsule, I went back to a theme we've done in challenges from the past couple years - sticks or a capsule consisting of makeup sticks. They're quick, easy, portable and get the job done, what's not to love?!

8 - Throwback - Sticks A.jpg

There's also nods to the Black founded and women founded beauty brands in honor of February's Black History Month and March's International Womens' Month celebrations. Nothing really new or new-to-me in this group though there may be a couple of items that are making a first appearance in this capsule challenge. 😲

Product Details:

Spoiler
* Primer (not shown): ciele prime & PROTECT SPF 30+ Smoothing Primer Original - hydrating, lightweight, easy to apply & blend, contains mineral SPF, does not pill under makeup

* Foundation & Concealer: LYS Beauty Triple Fix Blurring and Hydrating Skin Tint Foundation Stick and LYS Beauty Bright Start Creamy Buildable Coverage Airbrush Concealer - the foundation stick is in my top 3. The concealer is really a foundation and concealer in one and is quickly becoming a new go-to for me for its ease and convenience. Love its smooth, creamy texture. It goes on beautifully and gives a lot of coverage from the get go, but can be easily sheered out. Very lightweight, but hydrating; has that second-skin feel which is great for something that can give such high coverage.

The area under my eyes have occasionally been a smidge drier of late so I've pulled a foil sample of the Fenty Beauty by Rihanna Dew N Plump Hydrating Nectar Glow Serum 1 oz/30 mL to layer under the concealer if needed. There's so much product in this packet that it would take a miracle to get through it this week so I won't get through this foil in time for this month's Foil Challenge but there's a chance I could use it up by March.

* Setting Products: Danessa Myricks Beauty Mini Yummy Skin Liquid Blurring Balm Mattifying Setting Spray 1.7 oz/50 mL is tied for my #1 setting spray at the moment but I'm trying to save what I have for a trip next month so I've also been reaching for the combo of Charlotte Tilbury Mini Airbrush Flawless Finish Refillable Blurring & Setting Powder (not shown) and PAT McGRATH LABS Skin Fetish: Glass 001 Legendary Glow Setting Spray 3.38 fl oz/100 mL the latter of which amps up that dewy, glassy, glow!

* Cheeks: I'm not a huge cheek makeup gal for my everyday look so it'll be either a soft flush of color with HAUS LABS BY LADY GAGA Color Fuse Longwear Hydrating Glassy Lip + Cheek Blush Balm Stick Glassy Hibi... or a light wash of warmth and glow with LYS Beauty Mini Glow Worthy Light Bronzer and Highlighter 2-Piece Set

* Eye shadow: I've been using just the Danessa Myricks Beauty Infinite Chrome Waterproof Micropencil Eyeliner Bronzite as my eyeshadow lately and have really been enjoying how the shift can make it look like I'm wearing multiple shades on my lids.

* Eye liner: Staying with the tried and true Makeup by Mario Master Mattes Brightening Pencil - Light 1 (discontinued)on my lower lashlineto open up my eyes and make me look awake and alert.

* Mascara: Just going to get one last use in of the LYS Beauty Confidence & Curling Lash Mascara before retiring it, and then it'll be the dynamic duo of the DIOR Diorshow Overvolume Extreme Volume Mascara Overblack and Clio Kill Lash Superproof Mascara (04 Extreme Volume)

* Brows: While the length of the Valentino Brow Trio Eyebrow Liner # makes it cumbersome for storage and travel, there's no denying the utility and performance of this beauty.

* Lip Liner: LYS Beauty Speak Love Lip Liner Pencil Romantic # is a pretty, muted, dusty rose line

* Lip Stain: SEPHORA COLLECTION Lip Tint Felt Lip Stain & Liner 04 Cocoa Swipe  is excellent for precision lining. It took me a while to get use to the dot tip but now that I have, I do think I prefer it over the Huda contour lip stain. It dries down more smoothly and cleanly. That's actually a topin in the works for

* Lip Balm + Glosses: Both the above LYS liner and the SC lip stain pair beautifully with rhode Peptide Lip Treatment Nourishing Glaze Unscented #,  PAT McGRATH LABS LUST: Lip Gloss Bronze Divinity (gratis) or  DIOR Dior Addict Lip Maximizer Plumping Gloss 001 Pink (gwp)

* Fragrance: I'll primarily be reaching for Fenty Skin Vanilla Flowers Mist but may occasionally layer it with Touchland Vanilla Velvet Power Essence Body & Hair Fragrance Mist Vanilla Velvet  (not shown)

The "Fits":

8 - Throwback - Sticks B-1.jpg

This Valentino makeup bag / brush bag (gwp) holds a lot actually, and without being bulky. 👍

8 - Throwback - Sticks B-2.jpg

I can squeeeeeeeze in the DM setting spray and Fenty mist if I really want to.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge 2026

@itsfi  Yes!!!! Look at that capsule! It’s wonderful!!! I love that you picked sticks!!! The best! That bag is gorgeous!!!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge 2026

Thank you @ather! They (sticks) just check off so many boxes for me, it’s hard to pass up on circling back to it as a capsule. I love when a GWP makeup bag turns out to be an especially good / useful one. 👍🏻

Week 7 - The NYFW + LNY Makeup Capsule

7 - NYFW + LNY 1a.jpg

This week's capsule pays homage to a few of the events celebrated this month, and this week. I originally had two separate capsules for the week - one inspired by New York Fashion Week (NYFW) and the other in homage the Lunar New Year - but then decided to hunker down and put one capsule combining both themes. I'm aiming to keep my look more simple and light on makeup, both to emulate some of the street style spotted in New York during Fashion Week, but also because it's what I more naturally gravitate towards (and my skin is currently in a place where I can get by with less makeup so I will take advantage of that).

💯Black founded/owned beauty brands, recognizing this February's Black History Month marking 100 years of Black history commemorations

👗New York Fashion Week, looks seen on the streets at NYFW
🎋 Lunar New Year 2026 a l a the color red

Base:
Primer: I was hoping to not like the TOM FORD Traceless Soft Matte Primer with Pore-Smoothing Effect 1 oz/ 30 mL but it's turning out to be one of the best new-to-me products of the year so far. Granted, we're only a little over 6 weeks into the year, but I've not really brought in a lot of new-to-me items into the fold and I'm fairly selective in what I choose to shower effusive praise upon these days

The gel-to-powder texture goes on smoothly, creating a satiny-matte, soft-blur finish that does not feel heavy or drying. It does a good job of keeping my oils under control in the fall and winter months, though I'll want to put it to the test on my lower T-zone when the weather warms up and that area of my face is oilier. The soft, balmy, lemon scent is both calming and refreshing, and adds a pleasant, luxe touch to using the primer.Having gone through the primers in my collection for the Beauty Challenge -- Twelve Months of Beauty Inventory, it's safe to say I'm not in need of another primer. That said, I like this one enough to make room for it in my collection ... but maybe  later in the year, possibly during the spring savings event. That should give me more time to use up some of my partially used primers and perhaps give me an opportunity to try it out in a warmer climate during an upcoming trip.

Foundation: It started out with me just wanting to find ways to use up the last bit of product but I'm really enjoying the combination of the Tom Ford Soft Matte Foundation 1.1 Warm Sand (discontinued) and the Victoria Beckham by Augustinus Bader Priming Moisturizer (Golden). I literally need a fraction of a pump of each which is great from the standpoint of getting bang for my buck on these luxe items, but my word, it's taking me forever to use up the very last bit of both. I also have another bottle of each (a different shade in the TF, same shade in the VB), both of which also have a teensy bit of product left (less than 1/8th of product remains in each bottle).

Concealer: Keeping with the Victoria Beckham by Augustinus Bader The Concealer Pen L2 for my under eyes - the light but buildable coverage works well for me. I know that her eyeliners get a lot of press, some from going viral and much from the fact that they are lovely, especially for those who can handle very creamy eye liners, but I find many of her other products to be just as, if not more, marvelous than her eyeliners. Like this concealer pen. 😍

If I need more coverage, I'll use the DIOR Dior Forever Skin Correct Full-Coverage Concealer for blemishes and under the eyes. The 2N shade in the Dior is generally a good color for me most of the year; I can go as light as 1.5N in the winter in years when I don't get much sun. This is shade 2WP (not available at Sephora?) which can serve as a color corrector and concealer in one - it works best at concealing the very darkest of my post-acne hyperpigmentation / dark spots as well as my under eyes when quality sleep has eluded me the night before.

💯Setting Products: Danessa Myricks Beauty Mini Yummy Skin Liquid Blurring Balm Mattifying Setting Spray 1.7 oz/50 mL is in my Top 5 setting sprays, probably my current favorite for every day, year-round use. I also like that I can use it alone, without a setting powder. That said, it does work marvelously with quite a few setting powders, including the LYS Beauty Triple Fix Setting Powder.

Eyes:
💯Eye Liner (Top): This lovely little liner has been quite the surprise for me - I reached for Danessa Myricks Beauty Infinite Chrome Waterproof Micropencil Eyeliner Bronzite more than I thought I would last year as the bronze color and slight shift added something soft and something different. It's how I've been using it (as a liner) for most of the year, until recently. I've tried it as an all over the lid color and ... wow! The shift in it has been described as going from deep copper to a gold tone. I get less of a gold hue on my lids but I can create a subtle smokey eye with just this one liner as eyeshadow with the shift in it showing up on my lid as soft taupey-brown to a deeper bronze with very subtle flecks of a coppery-patina shimmer. The shift is very, very subtle compared to DM's other products but that actually suits me just fine.

Eye Liner (Bottom): Makeup by Mario Master Mattes Brightening Pencil  - Light 1 (discontinued) is back in the mix. Did we think I'd pass on it completely? It took a back seat for a while so that I could rotate through a few other products, but it can't stay away for too long. I love the way this opens up my eyes when I use it on my lower waterline. Gonna have to find a suitable replacement for this one.

Brows: Working my way through the handful of open, partially used eye brow gels in my collection and this week, it's Kosas Air Brow Tinted Clean Volumizing Eyebrow Gel.

Mascara: Most days this week, I'll just curl my lashes and go without mascara. For those days when I want to add mascara, it'll be CLIO Kill Lash Superproof Mascara 004 Extreme Volume Mascara. Unless I'm testing out a new-to-me mascara or using up what's in my stash, I'm basically planning on rotating among my various versions of the Clio Kill Lash mascara, the YSL Lash Clash mascara (regular and waterproof) and the Dior Overcurl mascara (regular and waterproof) for the rest of the year. That's how much I love those mascaras. They're my top 3 (the waterproof versions for the Dior & YSL) mascaras, and while I'm always happy to try new mascara products, I'm good with having just those in the rotation / collection.

Cheeks:
Keeping it pretty simple this week and sticking with just blush as far as cheek color goes.

👗 Blush: Not gonna lie, seeing that a "pop of coral" was all over the streets of New York for Fashion Week gave me a little pause - a coral flush is stunning ... on most everyone but me. It's one of those color families that I can do on my nails, fingers or toes, and find various shades I like and compliment my skin tone, but when that color family comes in contact with my sometimes rosacea-prone cheeks, it can be a problem. I have a small few coral or coral-adjacent shades that can work on me and I'll be leaning into those this week; primarily e.l.f. Monochromatic Multi Stick Glistening Peach and if I need to deepen that hue just a smidge more, I'll top it with a very light dusting of Tower 28 Beauty GetSet® Blur + Set Matte Powder Blush Long Beach Iced Tea.

Lips:
Lip Contour: Melt Cosmetics Slick Waterline Eye Pencil Apricot Cream (but for the lips) A little warmer, peachier, than I would normally use for my lip contour shade, but this works better when I'm wearing a red lip.

Lip Liner: Rokael Beauty Redefined Lip Shader Marked (cool nude brown) has been a great find and it's all thanks to the recommendation of the lovely @peculiarzmakeup.

Lip BalmRhode Peptide Lip Treatment (Pasionfruit) (limited edition) - another one of her tinted lip treatments that I really enjoy. This one is the last of 3 Rhode lip balms in my Winter shop your stash and I'm hoping to work my way through the entire tube before the end of next month. I have a little over half a tube so it is possible for me to use it up before then.

🎋 Lipstick:  One for every day, Prada Hydrating Lip Balm with Jojoba Oil U010 Maple, a neutral-ish brown that I can wear alone, or layer with a bolder liner or color, including the Dior Rouge Lipstick Lucky Symbols 802 Red Passion (limited edition)

Lip Gloss: Two options this week - the Valentino Puffer Complex™ Lip Plumper Gloss that I've never worn before and am interested to see the intensity level of the "plumping" aspect of this gloss.  And the other, e.l.f. Glow Reviver Tinted Lip Oil Crystal Baller that I've tried maybe 3 or 4 times now, with the first two times mistakenly being worn as eyeshadow instead of as a gloss. Yeah, that happened to me. Twice. Not good either time, but once I figured it was a lip gloss, every look I've worn with it - alone or as a topper - has looked good, it can be a teensy bit gritty but once it settles down it does look pretty paired with pretty much anything. Lesson learned - it's a good idea to read the instructions, or at least look at the back of the tube or do a quick search online to make sure I'm using it as intended.

Fits
7 - NYFW + LNY 2a.jpg
7 - NYFW + LNY 2b.jpg
To keep all these beauties together and for the LNY theme, I'm going with a red makeup bag a la Kjaer Weis. What I love about this bag:
  • Red color 🎋
  • Comes with a removable cloth wrapped piece of cardboard that can be used as a divider or placed at the bottom of the bag to give it more structure
  • Holds a lot of product

There's really nothing here that I don't have a problem keeping on hand from this capsule, for the most part. I'm going to use a disposable wand for the Valentino plumping lip gloss; that way, if I find the plumping feature to be too tingly for my liking, the product will still be as hygienic as possible for passing along. The Kosas brow gel, while nice, isn't my favorite, but I'm pretty close to using it up that I'll keep with it. I truly can stand to let go of some lip products but the e.l.f. shade is one of two products I have that are very close to the very difficult to get a hold of PML Earth Angel and given PML's current standing, I'll hold onto both those products.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge 2026

@itsfi , oh how I wish I could use and plan for two capsules, it's admirable you combined them

I'm with you on the coral adjacent party.  I like it on others, on myself it can't be too cool, otherwise it gets garish really quickly.

Also, makeup may have no rules.... Instructions, though? 🤣 I mean, at least you realized that product isn't a multitasker.  Eye gloss is a thing, but I don't think it has a day use, meaning that it looks great for a picture, but then it's not so great after.  We can say you were just testing it out, for SCIENCE

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge 2026

Gotta do right by the BIC Science Team 🔬 🧬 🧫 🧪  Oh, it’s definitely not a multitasker @danielledanielle 😂 🤦🏻‍♀️

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge 2026

Week 6 - The "Perfectly Paired" Makeup Capsule

This week's theme was referred to last year as the "Dynamic Duos" and "Killer Combos" capsule and was/is one of my favorites to put together and to see what others curate. I went with a smaller, more minimalist leaning capsule this week, and a mix of Black owned beauty brands and brands from around the globe / represented at the winter Olympics / Paralympics.

6 - Perfectly Paired A.jpg

Foundation for this week will be DIOR Forever Skin Perfect 24H Multi-Use Foundation Stick. My moisturizer should offer enough hydration and slip for the Dior but if I need to thin it out a little more, I'll pair it with a drop or two of rhode Glazing Milk Ceramide Facial Essence 4.2oz/124ml à la a Hailey Bieber tip and because I'm actually close to using up this bottle. Finally.

Going with the idea that there's no need to mess with what's not broken, my concealers this week are no strangers to the capsule challenge. The HAUS LABS BY LADY GAGA Triclone Skin Tech Hydrating + De-puffing Concealer with Fermented Arnica has been working out well for covering my blemishes and toning down redness around my nose and the Victoria Beckham by Augustinus Bader The Concealer Pen has proved to offer the right consistency and coverage for my under eyes.

LYS Beauty True Enlightenment Soft Focus Skin Finisher Powder and the Danessa Myricks Beauty Mini Yummy Skin Liquid Blurring Balm Mattifying Setting Spray 1.7 oz/50 mL have made one dynamic duo for setting my makeup, giving my complexion a beautifully blurred and softly dewy finish.

Keeping color products on my cheeks and eyes simple with Tower 28 Beauty GetSet® Blur + Set Matte Powder Blush Samo Spritzer (part of this year's Pan It! - 2026 Challenge for a flush of color on my cheeks and the metallic shade, Celeste, of the Danessa Myricks Beauty Colorfix Stix - Multi-Use Pearl Pigment Stick for Eye, Cheek & Lip Duo #6 Cel.... I love that both provide an exceptional color payoff with just one swipe but can be sheered out for a softer look (or built up should I want a little more oomph to my look).

I've not had the best of luck when it comes to layering mascara, until I came upon the killer combo of the DIOR Diorshow Overvolume Extreme Volume Mascara Overblack and the Clio Kill Lash Superproof Mascara Extreme Volume. I've put this pairing to a couple of trials and it has really delivered, holding up for 12+, 15+  and 18-hour days without a single smudge or flake. It takes a little patience on my part to layer these so that my lashes don't look clumpy but it looks great when I do take my time. I had two women ask me about my lashes while I was in Trader Joe's last night which made me wonder if I was being discreetly filmed for something 🤣 - the only time I get asked about my lashes is when a salesperson is trying to match me to a particularly mascara in a brand's lineup.

About 3 weeks ago, I paired the Haus Labs Mauve Matte lip crayon with one of the new(ish) lip balms from Rare Beauty and it was a lovely mix, yielding a slightly my lips but better every day look. I was looking for a little more depth of color and was playing around with a few of my lip products when I gave the pairing of the HAUS LABS BY LADY GAGA Le Monster Lip Crayon Vegan Lipstick and Lip Liner Mauve Matte with the Prada Hydrating Lip Balm with Jojoba Oil U010 Maple a try earlier this month and I've been hooked on this combo ever since so here we are. Once I remember to snap a photo this week of this pretty pairing, I'll post to Lips on Lock 🔐: List Your Lip Combos 💄👄 becuase it's definitely a lip combo I plan to wear many times this year and next, and ...

This makes for a great quick and easy look for every day or going out - I can easily sheer out or build up the blush, eyeshadow or lip color to get the look I want. I can see myself reaching for this set of products even as we head into spring, especially with the Rhode Milk thinning the coverage of the Dior stick. This set of items is actually a contender for what I will take with me on a trip next month, possibly adding a bronzer, contour and a couple additional lip options to the travel squad.

Great capsule @itsfi ! I've been using the Dior stick foundation non-stop and wondering how to incorporate the Rhode Glazing Milk with foundations...any tips on how you're mixing the two?

@PDXXXX, I've just been replicating what I've seen Hailey Bieber do for the most part - she swipes the Dior foundation onto the back of her hand and adds a drop or two of the rhode Mini Glazing Milk Ceramide Facial Essence 2.2oz/65ml #, blends the two together with a brush and then applies to her face.

Another way I found helpful if your dry areas centered around a particular part of your face is to just press and spread a drop of Glazing Milk in that area and then pick up the foundation with a brush from the stick and apply to face. If you have her rhode Glazing Mist Hydrating Face Spray 2.7oz/80ml or any hydrating mist will probably work, I like to apply the Dior foundation onto my skin, spritz my face with the mist and then go in and blend with a brush.

I've also used that latter approach with converting the Glazing Milk into a mist - decant a little of the Glazing Milk into an empty spray bottle, added just a teensy bit of water to make a mist. My skin can be a little sensitive to the coconut alkanes in the Glazing Milk (using it consecutive days isn't always ideal fo rme) so using her mist or diluting it a bit with water and making a mist has been helpful for me.

@itsfi appreciate your taking the time to give me the overview of ways to incorporate the Rhode products. I've been on the fence but not wanting to give up on it so these tips are great!

I don't want to hear about the VBB concealer.... No no no.... AHHHHHHH

Oooh, lash compliments are nice, they're just gazing at you @itsfi , not watching, just longing after your lashes

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge 2026

lol, the VBB concealer has been a pleasant surprise @danielledanielle. I don't know if they still offer it but they did have samples (possibly for purchase? or perhaps as a gwp) of the concealer shades. I haven't yet tried the concealer as a substitute for foundation but it's on my list of "to do's"
