What is a capsule makeup collection?
A capsule makeup collection is a selection of makeup products that can be used to put together different looks for a variety of occasions. For some of us, that may mean a group of essential products for your everyday look plus a few extra items for a more glam or dramatic look; and, for others of us, that may mean, a lineup of our holy grail product(s) in each makeup category. My ideal capsule makeup collection probably falls somewhere in between - we'll (hopefully) find out at the end of the year! I don't see myself as a minimalist, but I don't have an extensive collection of makeup either. I appreciate the collections of people who fall within both camps but I float somewhere in between - on the one hand, my brow product collection would earn a gold star if we were using a minimalist approach to makeup; my lip product lineup, on the other hand, would not. 🤣 It would most definitely not.
Why have a capsule makeup collection?
Everyone will have their own reasons for having (or not having) a more streamlined makeup collection. Over the years, I've just become more interested in having less beauty products on hand (well, except for lip products, lol) - a handful of items I use or reach for more frequently with maybe a few additional products that are go-to's for me for special events or occasions. Don't get me wrong, I love trying new products and I don't see that changing. I just like the idea of having a simpler collection (I appreciate that "simpler" can be relative), curated to my needs and lifestyle.
Why weekly?
A few years ago, beauty & lifestyle blogger Serein Wu, did a weekly series (on her blog and YouTube channel), Makeup Bag Monday, where she rotated her makeup bag each week with new product launches and makeup already in her collection. Every Monday, she shared the products she selected for the upcoming week and provided detailed makeup reviews on the makeup she used for the previous week. I may not post detailed reviews, but will at least try to include a weekly recap (probably at the end of the week) of what products I like and which ones didn't work for me. If weekly works for you, great. If not, feel free to join in based on what works best for you.
What if I don't have enough products to fit the theme for a full face?
No need for your entire makeup capsule to fit the weekly theme(s). Just one will do. And, even if you don't have one that fits squarely within a theme, feel free to post your makeup capsule. We'd love to see what you're using and hear your feedback on the products as you put them to use.
@CynthieLu, thanks. They are not cute, but semi-functional
"I barely know what today is..." Hahahaha! I feel this so much! I woke up earlier today, well before my alarm, got up and then thought "oh, today is Sunday, I can sleep in a little" and proceeded to go back to bed only to to realize as my head hit the pillow .... "No, girl, today's not Sunday. Get. Up." And so I did.
Love your Rare Beauty tie-in and focus for this week's capsule @danielledanielle (and I get your feelings on the commoditizing of mental health). Your capsule is inspiring me to do a Rare Beauty capsule later this week, though I may need to sub in a couple of items ... maybe. I know I don't have a lot of things from the brand, but I'm pretty sure I have more than I think I do. I'm thinking there will be a Weekend Edit of this week's capsule, with a Rare Beauty focus. Thanks for the inspo!
If someone were new to Rare Beauty, what would be the top 3 products you'd recommend they look into first?
I really was so skeptical about Rare Beauty when it came out, but I’ve been so impressed and it is more affordable than many brands. I just systematically checked every purse and cosmetics bag because I was missing my Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez Brow Harmony Precision Eyebrow Pencil . Finally found it in my computer bag!
I haven’t tried all that much but really love the following top 3:
Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez Brow Harmony Precision Eyebrow Pencil
Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez Positive Light Silky Touch Highlighter Mesmerize
Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez Perfect Strokes Universal Volumizing Mascara Black
A smile swept across my face when I read (and imagined) you going through your bags looking for the eyebrow pencil @sister13. Ohhh, how things find their way into my bags. 😂 Glad you found it!
Ahhhh, those sound like great Rare Beauty products. I've been impressed with her products - most of my RB things are of her lip products (not surprising) but I have a few cheek products from her line as well, and samples of her base products.
For me @sister13 , 9/10 it's in a pocket somewhere. Like, I'll quickly place it there's not to lose it and voila, it's lost to bag/jacket/pant.
Yes that too! I have a work briefcase when I need to take my laptop somewhere, a regular purse, sometimes I’ll throw things in a small tote or belt bag, all over the place basically. @danielledanielle
I was surprised at what I had! I really liked the Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez Lip Soufflé Matte Cream Lipstick , but haven't worn them in awhile, didn't realize I had two full sized and three minis. Most of them were in my lipstick purgatory, only Strengthen was amongst my favorites.
Good question 🤔, only three isn't fair though
I would choose Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez Positive Light Liquid Luminizer Highlight , they can make excellent foundation boosters and mix well with her blushes.
Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez Positive Light Silky Touch Highlighter, they are really pretty and make excellent shadows
Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez Brow Harmony Pencil & Gel, I don't have this, but heard good things from @peculiarzmakeup and @sister13
Since I picked two highlighters, that's basically one product 😂😉
Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez Kind Words Matte Lipstick, the price point on these are ridiculous. It's not a dry bullet, and the color payoff is there, the line is just slanted towards nudes, so gifted on me for example is a rosy nude, on someone else it's probably mauve.
I didn't pick the liquid blush because the blush in my experience is tricky. ( I know a lot of people love that and the lip oil. The lip oil is a stain... So take that as you will.( As for the blush...It didn't work for me until I started using it with other products. The Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez Soft Pinch Blush Brush also helps.. Essentially a stippling like brush is needed for those who find the blush patchy, if you ask me.
@danielledanielle I've never thought of using the powder highlighters as shadows! Definitely going to have to try that, they are such pretty highlighters!
Week 20 (May 13 - 19) - The "Sleeping Beauties" Makeup Capsule
Sleeping Beauties capsule - version 1
Sleeping Beauties capsule - look 1
Late posting bc the past two days have been a bit hectic, although good (we got a new dog!)
I had fun with this week's theme, although my takes on it ended up being a little less capsule-y than I intended 😅 I ended up drawing from more eyeshadow palettes than I originally planned, but all of them could use more love anyway and I was pretty happy with how this week's looks came out, so I don't feel too bad about it lol.
"Sleeping Beauties" capsule, version 1:
ONE/SIZE by Patrick Starrr Secure the Blur Makeup Magnet Primer 1.18 oz / 35 mL (deluxe sample)
Missha Perfect Cover BB Cream SPF 42 - No. 13 Bright/Milky Beige
Glossier Futuredew Facial Oil-Serum Hybrid 1 oz / 30 mL
LYS Beauty Higher Standard Satin Matte Cream Blush Humble
Natasha Denona Hy-Gen Skincare Glow Beautifier - Light (does Sephora not have this? I can't find it to tag)
Hourglass Veil™ Translucent Setting Powder - Talc Free Translucent (except that I forgot to use it this time oops 😅)
Kosas Air Brow Tinted Clean Volumizing Eyebrow Gel Auburn
Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz® Ultra-Slim Precision Detailing Eyebrow Pencil Caramel
Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion Original
Natasha Denona Xenon Palette
Colourpop Lav_ish palette
Viseart Petits Fours Lavande palette
Terra Moons eyeshadow - Lunar Lavendar
Danessa Myricks Beauty Infinite Chrome Waterproof Micropencil Eyeliner Lilac Quartz
ILIA Fullest Volumizing Mascara Classic Black
Hourglass Unlocked™ Satin Crème Lipstick Lotus 314
Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer Holla'gram (as a topper)
Urban Decay All Nighter Waterproof Makeup Setting Spray Standard Size - 4 oz/ 118 mL
Sleeping Beauties capsule - version 2 (not pictured: Moira Beauty Supernova Multichrome Gel Liner - Zora)
Sleeping Beauties capsule - look 2
"Sleeping Beauties" capsule, version 2 (this look was for this week's Makeup Challenge of the Week 2021/2022/2023/2024 theme):
Same as above with the following substitutions:
Lys Higher Standard Satin Matte Cream Blush - Unique
Colourpop Fade Into Hue palette
Juvia's Place The Violets palette
Huda Beauty Amethyst Obsessions palette
Moira Beauty Supernova Multichrome Gel Liner - Zora (which I forgot to include in the photo oops)
Covergirl Exhibitionist Lip Gloss - Hashtag
Standouts this week:
- O/S primer sample - I have been liking this one, I might purchase the full size to have in addition to my favorite Milani primer (which has a more dewy finish as opposed to blurring)
- ND concealer - really like this one so far; need to test it more but I might possibly end up liking it more than my current and longtime fav Glossier concealer? Gasp!
- DM eyeliner - so pretty and shimmery-shifty omg, I love it!
- Fenty holographic gloss - glad @danielledanielle originally brought this to my attention and @itsfi reminded me it existed - it's so pretty on its own and makes a versatile topper too
- Viseart quad palette - reminded me how much I like Viseart's eyeshadow formulas
Might end up decluttered in future:
- Kosas brow gel - it's fine, pretty good even, but the competition is stiff and I still prefer Glossier Boy Brow and MILK MAKEUP KUSH Fiber Eyebrow Gel Dub
- Ilia mascara - it's not bad but I did find it a little goopy and smeary, and I have far too many mascaras in rotation atm
- Covergirl lip gloss - I will probably keep this at least for now, but it's nothing special. I originally got it bc I was looking for a replacement for a discontinued Maybelline gloss I loved, but the color is completely different than it looked online and it doesn't look like the Maybelline one at all in person
That's all from me for this week - looking forward to next week's theme! 💜
@caitbird Beautiful looks!! And I'm with @danielledanielle your skin is gorgeous!!
Oooh you got a new pup?! 😍😍 How exciting is that! And a fun time of he or she adjusting to thier new home and family. I hope it's going really well 💜
@caitbird I love the sleeping beauties you brought to your capsules this week. Every thing you've matched together here is working beautifully for the looks you've been puting together.
What do you think of ND's Beautifiers? I do miss seeing this brand on the shelves and I'm in endlessly curious about the new releases. 😉 Anything you share I would appreciate
@CynthieLu very exciting! We all missed having a doggo in the family since our previous dog passed last fall, so it's awesome to have a canine buddy again! She is settling in well already, and we already love her 💜 I posted some pics of her in the Pet Paradise thread if you want to see her!
Thank you! I was pretty happy with how these looks came out.
So far I quite like the ND beautifier/highlighter, I have only used it a couple of times but it is a very nice highlighter, enough for that pop of shimmery highlight that I like but not too sparkly or glittery for me. I want to experiment with it some more - try it as an eyeshadow, maybe try different techniques - but so far I'm happy with it.
I'm going to go look for those pics @caitbird I can't wait to see her! ♥️
Thank you for sharing your thoughts on ND's highlighter. Not to glittery is an important kind of highlighter to have on hand. 😉✨. Thank you for telling me about it. Since nothing of hers is one or shelves any more it's so great to hear your thoughts and reactions to it. I get super curious about ND goodies.
Your Sleeping Beauties looks are fantastic @caitbird! As for your capsules being a little more … extra, isn’t that how life works out sometimes? 😊 I go back and forth with having a fuller capsule and a more edited one. All good. I’m learning what size capsule is best suited for me.
Lovin’ the purple shadows on you - both the lighter and deeper tones look fabulous on you! 💜 Your blush and lip shades complement them so beautifully too. I have far too many open concealer but am still feeling inclined to add the ND into the mix on a more regular basis - I have used it a few times and like it a lot and you @missjeanie speak so well of it.
@itsfi thank you so much! 😊 I had fun with the Sleeping Beauties theme. I need to test out the ND concealer some more, but right now I can see it becoming a favorite. That's part of the fun of this theme - discovering (and rediscovering) new and old favorites!
@caitbird, the ND concealer has received so many rave reviews, including from folks on BIC and this thread. There were so many concealers that launched around the same time as the ND one (and I picked up a few of them) so it's taking me a while to give all of them a good testing. Love that - discovering and rediscovering products that is, such a great part of shopping your stash. It's been helpful too to hear about what products have been performing well for others too. It can add to the wishlist 😂 but it feels more vetted out.
You know, I'm all for options @caitbird , so two versions 🤌🏽🤌🏽. Also, your skin! It's so flawless!
@danielledanielle thank you so much, that is so kind of you to say! I feel like I am always self-conscious of my skin and hyper aware of every flaw, so that means a lot to hear 💜
RECAP: Week 20 - The "Sleeping Beauties" Makeup Capsule
Week 20 - The Sleeping Beauties Makeup Capsule
Week 20: The Swatches
The Sleeping Beauties theme made for both a fun and productive week when it came to working through my makeup collection. It served as a catalyst for not just reaching for previously neglected makeup products but for other things as well, like clothes and shoes.
🏆 Top Shelf - No new products to add to the top shelf this week, though the ONE/SIZE by Patrick Starrr Mini On 'Til Dawn Mattifying Waterproof Setting Spray continues to give a strong performance. Summer will present the best testing ground for me for this one, but it continues to hold up (and hold my face in place as it has been), it could not only see it's way onto the top shelf but possibly be a GOAT as for as mattifying setting sprays go.
🤔 Undecided - I'm not so sure about the Anna Sui primer but I'm intrigued about it enough to keep it around. The Kulfi Underlined Kajal Clean Waterproof Long-Wear Eyeliner Cheeky Chiku is growing on me as I get familiar with working with it, but I'm not so sure about its long-wearing properties, though to be fair, the oils at my lashline don't generally place nice with anything but liquid liner. I was sure the Anna Sui blush would go, but I'm kinda liking it (and it's not just the packaging, lol) - the shade is just different enough from Tower 28 Dumpling Hour and Ami Cole Hibiscus that I can make room for it in my blush collection, for now, at least.
and finally, the products I'm saying "good bye" to ~
Week 20: The Declutters
🗑️ Cover Girl TruBlend Undercover Concealer - I thought about keeping this around just because I thought the handle would make for a good photo decor.
🗑️ IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Dark Spots Concealer + Serum with Niacinamide & Hyaluronic Acid - I really like that this has a brush on the end; it’s a good concealer, but it’s got some stiff competition and since the shade isn't the best match, it's out.
💝 Orce foundation x3 - these are fine, but none are a great match shade for me at the moment and I'm not sure the formulation would beat out the other foundations I have (and have been enjoying). These will be donated to an organization that helps women entering (or re-entering) the workforce with clothes, makeup, and assistance with resumes and interviews.

Excited to see and hear about everyone's capsules.
