What is a capsule makeup collection?
A capsule makeup collection is a selection of makeup products that can be used to put together different looks for a variety of occasions. For some of us, that may mean a group of essential products for your everyday look plus a few extra items for a more glam or dramatic look; and, for others of us, that may mean, a lineup of our holy grail product(s) in each makeup category. My ideal capsule makeup collection probably falls somewhere in between - we'll (hopefully) find out at the end of the year! I don't see myself as a minimalist, but I don't have an extensive collection of makeup either. I appreciate the collections of people who fall within both camps but I float somewhere in between - on the one hand, my brow product collection would earn a gold star if we were using a minimalist approach to makeup; my lip product lineup, on the other hand, would not. 🤣 It would most definitely not.
Why have a capsule makeup collection?
Everyone will have their own reasons for having (or not having) a more streamlined makeup collection. Over the years, I've just become more interested in having less beauty products on hand (well, except for lip products, lol) - a handful of items I use or reach for more frequently with maybe a few additional products that are go-to's for me for special events or occasions. Don't get me wrong, I love trying new products and I don't see that changing. I just like the idea of having a simpler collection (I appreciate that "simpler" can be relative), curated to my needs and lifestyle.
Why weekly?
A few years ago, beauty & lifestyle blogger Serein Wu, did a weekly series (on her blog and YouTube channel), Makeup Bag Monday, where she rotated her makeup bag each week with new product launches and makeup already in her collection. Every Monday, she shared the products she selected for the upcoming week and provided detailed makeup reviews on the makeup she used for the previous week. I may not post detailed reviews, but will at least try to include a weekly recap (probably at the end of the week) of what products I like and which ones didn't work for me. If weekly works for you, great. If not, feel free to join in based on what works best for you.
What if I don't have enough products to fit the theme for a full face?
No need for your entire makeup capsule to fit the weekly theme(s). Just one will do. And, even if you don't have one that fits squarely within a theme, feel free to post your makeup capsule. We'd love to see what you're using and hear your feedback on the products as you put them to use.
Because I had pulled so many products for chopping block week, I’m going to continue using this capsule into next week as well!
here’s what I used today and my thoughts
Passed the Test - Smashbox x Vlada Petal Metal Highlight (Rosemantic). I used this with the ROSE INC Number 2 Blush Brush and it looked so beatific and luminous as a blush!
Bite Beauty Lip Pencil (030) and NARS Orgasm Oil-Infused Lip Tint Orgasm (shade is actually High Security, not Risky Business like I previously thought) both passed the test and actually make a gorgeous combination. I love the creaminess of the liner (despite it being of questionable age), and the pigment is perfect in the lip oil. Both are here to stay!
Safe (for now)/Undecided - Lise Watier Portfolio Professional Correctors went on creamier than I thought/remembered. I used Ivory and Yellow Beige as concealers and they did a great job, while also not being as cakey as I thought they would. Only undecided for now because I want to try the other shades before making my decision - I have lots of concealers, so if the other shades don’t do anything for me, this may be passed onto someone else.
Kylie Cosmetics Blush (You’re Perfect - used as under eye setting powder). I love the texture of this powder, even though it’s not being used in the intended way. I’m undecided because I don’t know if I actually need a dedicated 10g powder just for my under eye (not the right shade for setting anywhere else on my face), and I typically do not support this brand; I think I have one other product from the line in my collection and both were purchased at Marshall’s.
Didnt Make the Cut - Revolution Soap Styler. I tried to like it, but I don’t know if my product is just really dried out, but it was really hard to get onto the applicator. I think it did an ok job of keeping my brows in place, but it didn’t do anything special for me that I can’t find with brow gels already in my collection
Excellent work figuring out what stays and goes @cianni 🎉 and taking extra time to make more informed decisions, that's sooooo smart!
I've actually been considering purchasing a color corrector Cianni, Lise Watier Portfolio Professional Correctors Original how do you think it rates against other correctors you've used?
Ohhhh, the Smashbox x Vlada highlight @cianni - it's a beauty inside and out. I remember when that was released; the packaging omg!!! I'm (not so) secretly happy it passed the test. I'm sure it looked stunning on you!
Week 9 in Review - The February 2024 "Best Of" and/or "On The Chopping Block" Makeup Capsule
Quite a few products were on the chopping block this week - some survived, others have been chopped! 😆 Here's a quick breakdown of where most items landed.
Decluttered:
Makeup Capsule Declutters: The February Edit
Month-To-Date: 12
Year-To-Date: 18
Tell more more about ...:
I was asked about these two products and have a few thoughts on them after putting them to the test this week. Tagging @Mellmars1185 and @CynthieLu
🤔 IT Cosmetics Mini CC+ Cream Full Coverage Color Correcting Foundation with SPF 50+ Fair Light is indeed full coverage, but with a light consistency, and that can be sheered out (or built up). I was reminded why I liked this formula - super blendable and easy to apply. The color is a bit warm for me but it's not so warm that it definitely wouldn't work. I like it enough to keep it in my stash but I can't say whether it will stick around through the end of the year. Shade-wise, Light will suit me better in the summertime. I'll keep it in my stash to see how it fares then before making a final determination.
🤔 SEPHORA COLLECTION Beauty Amplifier Clear Universal Waterproof Lip Liner 0.04 oz/ 1.2 g is ... okay. It does help keep lipstick from bleeding or running. This one I'm going to have to work with more to see wether it stays or goes.
There we have, week 9 in review. Can't believe we're nearly done with 9 weeks! Excited to hear how this week's capsule worked for everyone!
March themes have been uploaded to the original post (OP)
Your candid honesty is fantastic @itsfi
Reading your edit was so real, it made me internally grin. I have similarly had internal debates with myself when it comes to letting things go. Stay strong, you can do it!
Ahh so the C.C cream survives to be used another day, I wondered where that ones would fall into the mix this week, thank you for that!
Thanks so much @CynthieLu. The internal debates in my head are brutal! Toss it. Keep it. Toss it. Keep it. You might use it again! When was the last time I even picked this up? What if ... 😂🤣😂 It's like watching a tennis match! 🎾 Stays. Goes. Stays. Goes. Do you find there are products that you go back and forth on more than others? For me, it's probably foundation, cleansers, and serums. Lip products I have a lot of but have an easier time tossing. Or, at least I think I do. You never know that by looking at all my lip products though. Ha!
The CC Cream lives to even my complexion another day. 😅 We'll see how it fares in the warmer months.
I think we all have these internal tennis matches, that's well said @itsfi. I have a hard time decluttering, and I'm sure this happens to others. But it's like when you finally let something go, but then a situation arises not too soon after where the it would have come in handy. And you feel this big internal sigh. That all being said, I'm trying for more mindful purchases where I hopefully don't end up with too many things I'll struggle to finish. A total work in progress thou. 🙈
@itsfi You did an awesom job decluttering this week. Thanks for the tag and sharing your feedback on the IT Cosmetics.
Thank you @Mellmars1185! I'm trying to be hardcore about decluttering but it doesn't always work. Let's be honest, it rare works, so the moments when I'm committed (or clearly, mostly committed based on my almost bringing back the Iconic setting spray into the stash - oops!), I try to stick with it - READ: try to get the thing out of the house stat so there's no temptation to hang onto it and hoard it longer. 😂 I'm thinking this gives me some cushion for the weeks/months when I legit don't have anything from a capsule that should be decluttered.
This is the least “capsule”-y capsule for me, but I went through my entire collection in search of products I totally forgot I owned. I figured those would be great contenders for the chopping block, seeing as I haven’t touched them/thought about them in who knows how long! I was able to pull together a product for each category (and way too many for lips). Forgot to add that I had a teeny sample of the GUERLAIN Lingerie De Peau Natural Foundation SPF 20 that I’ll use if the opportunity to wear foundation comes up.
in line with the theme of things I forgot I had, my fragrance of the week is PHLUR Missing Person Eau de Parfum 1.7 oz/ 50 mL 😂
I'm loving the look of the beauties in your capsule @cianni. So many pretty colors with a soft glow / sheen to them. Lots of great looks waiting to be curated with this capsule. Interested in hearing your thoughts on the Guerlain if you have a foundation day.
@cianni It looks like you chose a lot of beautiful items this week. The Rose blush/highlighter is beautiful. What brand is it?
@Mellmars1185 thank you!! So many forgotten beauties haha. The highlight/blush is Smashbox! I believe this was the Petal Metal collection in collaboration with Vlada. It’s definitely older than I’d like to admit, and I originally purchased it because of the packaging, but now that I’m in my blush era it makes sense to pull it out haha
It'll be exciting too see the outcomes for everything you've put together here @cianni I can't wait to hear what makes the cut. 😄
@CynthieLu I told myself I’d be ruthless with this one, but it’s a little harder once trying everything again haha
Oooh it is so tough but you can do it @cianni 💞
Soo I have been away on a work trip, and I didn't feel like I could participate with everything capsule related lately because... I brought much more than a capsule with me. 😅
But I did pack mostly favorites and my regular go to's.
So I'm entering my "Going Away Capsule" which is just my favorites from my collection. They have all made thier appearances in my capsules this year.
Not Pictured:
A large bag of my foils. I bring them when I travel to give to colleagues, incase they maybe left something they needed at home. You know I have it in a foil most likely.
And my hair care. Which was already laid out around the bath tub. I just didn't think to photograph it.
I feel like everything shown here I've mentioned before,
I won't list everything, but I'm sure you spy some familiar items. 😉
@CynthieLu, hope your work travels went well. Oh, look at the pretty palettes! 😍 And all those pretty TF lipsticks lined up!
@CynthieLu Lovely travel capsule. It looks like you have a nice collection of TF lipsticks. I hope you had an amazing trip!
Ahhh that's the mini's I've accumulated from TF, the set from there holidays and Casablanca 😉 @Mellmars1185 I couldn't seem to tag it.
Week 9 best of!!
I’ve fallen behind on the Capsule thread. But I have still been participating in my own way!
I am doing the best of February! These products I have been reaching for non stop this month!
