Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge 2024

Hello, BIC Beauties! If the idea of makeup capsules piques your curiosity, or you're interested in seeing what's in the beauty collection or weekly makeup bag of your fellow BIC beauties, jump right on in - with questions, comments or a capsule of your own to share.
0 - 8.18 edit capsule post 1.jpg
0 - 8.18 edit capsule post 2.jpg
0 - 8.18 edit capsule post 4.jpg
To add a fun take on putting together a makeup capsule, I've included theme(s) for the weekly capsule - some weeks, I have enough products in my stash (eek!) to make a whole capsule based on the prompt; other weeks, I have just one or two items that fit neatly within theme.

Whether you find yourself in the same place or somewhere in between, jump right on it and share your weekly makeup capsule. Check out the FAQ section below ⤵️ for more info on this challenge.

CURRENT MAKEUP CAPSULE THEME:

Week 52 (December 23 - December 29) - The Holiday Glam Makeup Capsule and/or  The "2024 Makeup Capsule Collection" Makeup Capsule - Some options for us to close out the makeup capsules for 2024 (or to kick start 2025)!

Show us the beauties you use when you want to add glitz and glam (or, that up the glitz and glam element) to your makeup look.

and/or

Curate a bag with your go-to, GOAT, ride-or-die products that would make up your ultimate makeup capsule collection (for 2024). If it's too much to put together a creme de la creme capsule or if you're at your best with options, consider putting together a makeup capsules of one or more favorites you discovered (or re-discovered) in 2024.

What is a capsule makeup collection?

A capsule makeup collection is a selection of makeup products that can be used to put together different looks for a variety of occasions. For some of us, that may mean a group of essential products for your everyday look plus a few extra items for a more glam or dramatic look; and, for others of us, that may mean, a lineup of our holy grail product(s) in each makeup category. My ideal capsule makeup collection probably falls somewhere in between - we'll (hopefully) find out at the end of the year! I don't see myself as a minimalist, but I don't have an extensive collection of makeup either. I appreciate the collections of people who fall within both camps but I float somewhere in between - on the one hand, my brow product collection would earn a gold star if we were using a minimalist approach to makeup; my lip product lineup, on the other hand, would not. 🤣 It would most definitely not.

Why have a capsule makeup collection?

Everyone will have their own reasons for having (or not having) a more streamlined makeup collection. Over the years, I've just become more interested in having less beauty products on hand (well, except for lip products, lol) - a handful of items I use or reach for more frequently with maybe a few additional products that are go-to's for me for special events or occasions.  Don't get me wrong, I love trying new products and I don't see that changing. I just like the idea of having a simpler collection (I appreciate that "simpler" can be relative), curated to my needs and lifestyle.

Why weekly?
A few years ago, beauty & lifestyle blogger Serein Wu, did a weekly series (on her blog and YouTube channel), Makeup Bag Monday, where she rotated her makeup bag each week with new product launches and makeup already in her collection. Every Monday, she shared the products she selected for the upcoming week and provided detailed makeup reviews on the makeup she used for the previous week. I may not post detailed reviews, but will at least try to include a weekly recap (probably at the end of the week) of what products I like and which ones didn't work for me.  If weekly works for you, great. If not, feel free to join in based on what works best for you.

What if I don't have enough products to fit the theme for a full face?

No need for your entire makeup capsule to fit the weekly theme(s). Just one will do. And, even if you don't have one that fits squarely within a theme, feel free to post your makeup capsule. We'd love to see what you're using and hear your feedback on the products as you put them to use.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@cianni You look beautiful, and your skin is glowing! I have tried the Dr. Jart+ Cicapair™ Tiger Grass Color Correcting Treatment SPF 30 1.7 fl. oz/ 50 mL  and loved it. I should try out the drops. It looks like makeup layers nicely on top of it.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@cianni That lip combo looks so fresh!  Love it on you!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

This is so gorgeous 💝 @cianni You used your items beautifully. I saw some DR.Jart Cicapair items at Marshalls the other day, I'm regretting not picking one up to try now. I think it was just the serum, not the SPF.. or maybe there was spf in it.. I should have taken a picture 🙃 But everytime I see you mention it I want you try it.  😉

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

You look amazing @cianni! Fresh faced, glowy and the pops of color to your eyes and lips are stunning! I love that you'll be able to create different looks with this capsule! 💖

Ahhhh nap time. Hope Baby G is sleeping well at nap time. Gives you a (much needed) break.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi Hahaha oh yes, even the best concealer can’t hide that it was nap time for me too 😅

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

You look great, @cianni ! 😍  I don't look that good when I take my time! 🤣

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@Titian06 Thank you!! Honestly my best looks always happen when I’m in a time crunch - especially hair 😂 why is the perfect messy updo always attained when I’m about to jump into the shower and don’t want to get my hair wet, but I can’t duplicate it when I have actual time to do my hair??

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Note: Oookay my collection of makeup and etc is actually quite modest. (Unless we're talking eyeshadow... That's a whole other story. 🙃) So in order to make a capsule I will use, I did have to include an SPF that went over the limit. It's my most affordable mini coming in at 22 USD, but I need an SPF daily.( ☀️ Gotta protect from those rays. 😎)

1000011802.jpg

I choose a mini mascara in Fan Fest, A mini brow pencil and mini tinted brow gel by Benefit.

An E.L.F primer, a Eucerin lip balm and a liquid lip from Estate.

The powders are a mini Laritzy Blush,  A mini Belle Piere highlighting compact and a mini gold ND ornament.

1000011803.jpg

Missing: foundations, concealers, tints etc.. I have a few and they were not close enough in price range.

Upside, the sunscreen mini I chose had a bit of a tint, same with the primer, sooooo that's cool. 😉

Thoughts on last week's challenge.

Spoiler
I missed an eyebrow product 🙈🙈🙈
As a barely there brow person, the very first time I used this too put a look together, I was like ooops. So I did add Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz® Ultra-Slim Precision Eyebrow Pencil Soft Brown
1000011095.jpg

This was a great experiment in how little you can use, but still put a look together. It was kind of eye-opening really and I am so glad you came up with this challenge @itsfi. It's challenging but in a totally good way.🙏🩷

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@CynthieLu I love seeing someone say that SPF is not optional!  Excited to see how you liked this weeks products!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

They did great, the only issue I had was ND's mini and baby palette's never have a light enough shade for me to do the make up looked I like. Sooo I tried to use shades from my mini highlighting palette to make something work. It was a fun experiment. 😉

1000012161.jpg

This was the look I came up with from only using everything I laid out for this capsule. It was really fun to do, I loved just kinda winging it. It's adventurous imo to just kinda go for it. 😄

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@CynthieLu Gorgeous look with the under $20 capsule. I like how you got creative with the highlighter and used it as an eyeshadow!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@CynthieLu I love your eyeshadow collection though. You have so many fun ones!

How do you like the primer? Is it drying in anyway and does it deliver on the pore-hiding front as well? I haven’t opened mine yet and so just got a second one from the latest mystery box.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

The one from E.L.F must be silicone based but I don't have it near me to check atm @JoSometimes. To me it behaves similarly to  The Ordinary High-Adherence Silicone Primer 1 oz/ 30 mL . I get dry unless my base work is spot on, so as long as I'm prepped I like it. 😄

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@CynthieLu Interesting… We both tried The Ordinary’s primers before but I tried The Ordinary High-Spreadability Fluid Primer 1 oz/ 30 mL instead. I will go into this one with an open mind once I’m out of my other primers.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

I lol'ed at your eyeshadow collection comment @CynthieLu! We all have at least one category of beauty products that is ... healthier ... than the others. 😂 You picked some pretty products for this week's capsule - that Belle Pierre palette is lovely 😍 My eyes went straight away (of course, lol) to the lippie. I went to look up Estate; it's great hearing about the local Canadian brands. That liquid lip shade looks like it will be stunning on you. Definitely interested in hearing how this week's makeup works out for you. It was interesting seeing what items fit into the challenge prompt; surprised too that I have so many cheek products in this range, or that I have so many cheek products, period. ha!

Ohhh, it makes me really happy to hear you've been learning things through the challenge. I'm thrilled that your jumping in and participating. Some weeks are easier than others, and it's been great to see how everyone approaches their capsule for a week. Like you, I've been surprised with how few products you can use for an everyday look. I've been changing up the number of items I've used and will continue to do that. Definitely as  you said eye opening, on so many levels.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

I like Estate, all the lippies I have gotten from them were from my Top Box Subscription. Except I purchased two more on my own just because I enjoy them so much, especially for an affordable lippie. Thier highlighters aren't bad at all either. 😉 Definitely need to spread some love for the Canadian brands.

Thank you @itsfi I'm happy to join in. Following along with everyone is fun too, everyone brings thier own creativity and unique approach to thier capsules. It's fun to see it all unfold. 😄

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Week 3 - The $20 and under capsule

20240115_171001.jpg

I have to admit I felt really bad about not using any of these recently and don't even know how long some of these items have been sitting in my collection. I am sure a lot of these purchases were to get extra points from Shopper's Drug Mart or I was influenced by a YouTube video. I am so happy to give these products some love this week and see what works and what doesn't. I am going o use the Avon Magix Wand Foundation stick as a cream bronzer. A coworker destashed it to me a while ago and I didn't really have a use for it until now. I am just hoping the Maybelline Foundation will hold up tomorrow at work because I don't really have time to test it out. I did open the bottle to see if the shade matched and things got a little messy. There is no pump and it went flying (in my sink). I tried to rinse it off my hands and sink and the water sort of repelled off of it. This should be fun!

EDIT - Week 2 recap in spoiler

Spoiler
 20240107_130345.jpg

The NARS All That Glitters Light Reflecting™ Cheek Palette is a new favourite palette of mine now. The shades last all day and they give a nice glowy look without being too shimmery
MAKEUP BY MARIO Ethereal Eyes Eyeshadow Palette - I haven't been reaching for this as much as I wanted to so I was happy to give this some love this week. The powders blend out nicely and the shimmers are builable but give a nice wash of shimmer without being too much. It is a great day or night palette.
Givenchy Prisme Libre Loose Setting and Finishing Powder 3 Voile Rosé - My go to setting powder. I think after I get through all of my other setting powders, this will be the one I continue to purchase. It is so blurring and the powder is very fine.
The ILIA True Skin Serum Concealer with Vitamin C Lotus SC2.5  and KVD Beauty Good Apple Lightweight Full-Coverage Concealer Light 109  were both not exact shade matches for me but both products mixed well together in terms of shades and formulas. As much as I want to declutter, I will hang onto these because they worked well.
Fenty Beauty by Rihanna Eaze Drop Stick Blur + Smooth Tint Stick Foundation 9   and Fenty Beauty by Rihanna Eaze Drop Stick Blur + Smooth Tint Stick Foundation 7  - I got both shades because I saw my fave makeup influencer do the same thing and both shades gave her the perfect match. I have to say I probably didn't need both. I think the 7 may be a bit too light. They work together with different placement on the face. This formula is so easy to work with and my skin looks hydrated when wearing it. It is smooth and feels lightweight on the skin. Happy I got to use these all week.
Tower 28 Beauty MakeWaves Lengthening + Volumizing Mascara Drift  - Can't give this mascara enough love. This is a brown shade. I like both the black and brown.
Anastasia Clear Brow Gel left my brow feeling a bit crusty but not looking crusty. Will give this another chance.
Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz® Ultra-Slim Precision Eyebrow Pencil Medium Brown  - Great for giving my brows a more deepened look. I think I got this in a Sephora Favorites set before I got my brows microshaded. I will hang onto this too but I have a Kosas Brow Pop Nano Ultra-Fine Detailing + Feathering Eyebrow Pencil  I want to try before I part with this.
caliray So Blown Pore-Minimizing & Hydrating Collagen Peptide Primer with Niacinamide 1 oz / 30 ml  - I want to like this. The orange scent is pleasant. I think the key for myself is to use very little so it does not pill. Just in my t-zone

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

I see quite bit of elf in there @Mellmars1185! I’m looking forward to hearing your recap later this week.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@JoSometimes Thanks! I am looking forward to reporting back 😁

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@Mellmars1185 I love the detailed recap for week 2! I’m looking forward to cycling in the Tower 28 mascara I grabbed in a SF set last week after seeing how much love it gets around the BIC!

these are all great products for this week - I’m interested in what you have to say about the elf products. I know so many of them have gone viral lately, but I haven’t tried too many of their newer products. That’s unfortunate about the foundation - why do any still come without pumps???
