Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Welcome to Year 7 of our Pan It! Challenge ElleElleG_0-1704168084184.gif

ElleElleG_9-1704168647118.jpeg

The "Rules"

To accommodate a variety of interests, you all are encouraged to pick items to pan that are most suitable to your collections.  For some, this might mean focusing on a particular type of product (like lipstick) and for others this may include a larger variety spanning your entire makeup or skincare routine.

Getting Started (please share the following)

  • Which item(s) you would like to work on
  • How long you will work on said item
  • Goal: explore a new item, revisit an old item, decide whether to keep pass or trash, and/or completely finish item, etc.
  • Starting photo of item

Please Use This Thread To...

  • share what item(s) you are working on,
  • provide comparative progress photos of your item(s) monthly (at the beginning of the month when possible),
  • ask questions,
  • encourage others,
  • motivate others with the looks you create with your item(s)

Tips and Tricks to Panning/Getting Some Use Out of Your Stash:

Spoiler
  • Take photos!!  When you think you aren’t making a dent in anything look back at those photos, I’m certain you’ll see some changes 😃 *this is the number one recommendation for everyone, regardless of how long you’ve been panning! Those photos add up and can help you realize progress you might otherwise overlook.
  • If you goal is to hit pan or use something up entirely, try concentrating your brush/applicator in the same area each time you use it
  • Multitask your products: eyeshadows as highlighter, lipstick as blush, eyeshadow as brow powder, etc.
  • Layer eyeshadow to create different colors (this is especially helpful to get use out of shades you’re not fond of).
  • Have shadows with a ton of fall out?  Use water
  • Watching the progress of others’ can be fun but try not compare your progress to theirs.  We all use our makeup differently and have different goals.
  • Don’t restrict yourself to only using the item(s) you are working on.  It’s more than OK to incorporate other items or take a break!
  • Makeup should be fun….if you begin to dread doing your makeup because you made a commitment to use a product that you now hate, TOSS IT!  Do not force yourself to use up something you don’t like.  Move on to something else!  (This includes excluding particular shades from your goals if focusing on palettes, etc.)

Ideas to Help You Pan Those Items:

Spoiler
  • Roll the dice: number your items and use a random number generator to pick what you will use each (day/week/month/etc.)
  • Layer/Mask: items you are less fond of under things you like
  • Pan a Look: at the beginning of the week pick a look that you can wear everyday
  • Recreate: a look worn by a fellow BICer, celebrity, etc.
  • Spice up an "everyday" look by adding subtle pops of color (in the crease or on the lower lash line, mix lip products to make shades wearable, etc.)

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@missjeanie, I’m feeling for you with that body lotion! You’re so close: sooo close. It’s gonna be one where slow and steady wins the race, but it’ll take everything you have to keep going. I wish there were a way we could make it more of an exciting product for you to use … hey, thinking aloud here … wondering if combining the Pacifica fragrance with the lotion would make it at least smell better?

Or what if you made your own foot mask with it? Since it already takes some time to absorb. Slather it on your feet, cover with Saran Wrap and wear a pair of socks, maybe even a double pair over that? 🤔

You & @Samtian will be pan buddies when it comes to that GXVE palette. I love the boring eye shadow palettes but completely get they don’t hold the same level of excitement for everyone else. 😆 Would pairing it with a shimmery shade each time you use it make if more fun for you?

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@missjeanie Ooh that is some nice pan already!!! @itsfi Haha I'm actually sitting it out this year.

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@Samtian Lol... that's the only shade I've really used!  The real trick will be using the others.  Fingers crossed though!

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@itsfi I've been contemplating combining a fragrance into the dang body lotion.  That may happen!  Once I figure out how to surgically remove the roller ball from that guy, it may suddenly empty a lot depending on how graceful of surgeon I am!

I actually like the GXVE formula just fine, and I tend to very much prefer mattes over shimmer shades.  I just find that the shades are warmer than I like.  If they were a bit cooler or rosier... then we'd be talking about buying backups!  I knew I wanted to try some kind of shadow panning and figured a quad was as adventurous as I could get and I wanted to try one that was going to be easier to use.  This one should be easy enough to use daily for me if I can give up my favourite mauve tones here and there!

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Eeek! Be careful with that surgical procedure @missjeanie! I've used the tip of the file on a nail clipper before, thinking it would be my safest option, but that involved some special care, which I'm sure had more to do with the non-surgeon pretending to be one. 🤣

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@itsfi  This non surgeon was thinking maybe a steak knife??? That’s what I usually use to pull stoppers out of concealer and lipgloss.  Might need to go out to the garage and start looking at the heavy duty tools if that doesn’t work.

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Oh, I think a steak knife would work @missjeanie. Just be careful. It's a little different than cutting into a steak. Maybe plan to have a steak afterwards. 😃

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

I’m officially ready with my pan project for this year! I’m taking a slightly different approach this year, which i think will improve my success ☺️ I’ve created a notebook that is organized by month, and will include all empties from that month, plus progress photos of the products I’ve designated for this project. I may cross post in the empties thread, but not 100% sure yet. I’ve also removed my total empties goal, to incentivize myself to use more FS products/older products, instead of just moving through minis to get those numbers up.

without further ado, here is my current lineup! I may swap in some of the same category once completed:

Spoiler
Ideally, I’d like to finish/full pan everything on here, with the exception of the hoola bronzer, mac palette and physicians formula blush. I’d like to hit at least one pan. The huda and ND palettes just need some love, so i want to use them more, with no expectation of hitting pan.

And here is what they look like now:IMG_7336.jpegIMG_7332.jpegIMG_7333.jpegIMG_7334.jpegIMG_7335.jpeg

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Love how you've planned your approach to panning this year @cianni !!!

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@cianni gorgeous layout!! Good luck

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@lmaster thank you! This is one of the first years that I think i actually am picking products that i know i enjoy using, even though i dont reach for them often. Usually i would pick things that I just want to go through for the sake of finishing them, but those projects tend to feel like they drag on forever

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@cianni Fantastic organization and way to start the month! Can't wait to see your progress.

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@Samtian I know the timing is a coincidence, but I’m having a pretty successful month so far, so I’m going to pretend that it’s the new organizational layout that’s made the difference here haha

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Your plan looks solid @cianni 💖 I'm impressed with your gorgeous list.

I think I see a growing theme of organization amoung the veterans of this challenge. I'm going to take some inspiration from you when I start my project pan. I have everything picked out but I think I'll keep track better and be more motivated if I take a page out of your book. 😉

I think your going to do amazing with this. 🙌

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@CynthieLu thank you! It’s definitely a learning process over the years to see what works! One of my main takeaways has been to eliminate skincare pans, because i already know ill go through certain products, plus i dont want to feel the neeed to finish something that may not be working for my skin.

something about aesthetic organization certainly also helps! The app used to create this notebook tracker is called Kilonotes btw 😊

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

That's a super cute app 😻 @cianni esthetically pleasing and organized, that's a good mix. ** I looked at in the play store, I think I'm going too get it. It's adorable!*"

I think that's really wise, don't use anything that doesn't feel good anymore. Skincare should be fun and something we look forward to.

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@CynthieLu exactly! Not much sense in doing self care if it’s with products you dont even like 😅

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Love your monthly notebook @cianni! It will be great to see your new approach playing out in your check ins. Look at that NARS lip crayon - you are so close to working through that baby! Impressed with your fragrance progress.

That rosebud salve tin contains sooooo much product, but you've made a lot of progress. I see pan and I know we'll see more pan over the course of the year. Is this a balm you use everyday?

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@itsfi Ive been quite partial to the CLINIQUE Moisture Surge™ Lip Hydro-Plump Treatment 0.33 oz/ 10 mL lately actually! The rosebud salve is what I keep on my bedside table, but it’s getting a little impractical to use a product that requires a spatula to apply (or risk getting it all over the place unless I get up to wash my hands, which defeats the convenience purpose of why it’s there)

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Good luck everyone! This year I want to work on my SDJ body oil, Charlotte Tilbury Flawless Filter, foundation, and setting spray, Merit bronzer, WA contour stick, Hourglass ambient, and Dior lip balm.

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Great line up @faeriegirl ! Those Ambient Light powders have intimidated me through the screen 😅
