Using skincare for dry skin on oily skin??

I have extremely bad oily skin and I've heard that the reason why it's so oily is that my skin is really dehydrated, making my natural oils produce more oil just so it can somewhat get the moisture it needs. And I know that most hydration skincare is more for dry skin, but since the oily skin is basically dehydrated skin, shouldn't I use products like that to hydrate it?? I really need to get my oiliness under control.

Re: Using skincare for dry skin on oily skin??

I agree with the previous post about some dry skin products being too much for oily skin - mostly during the day and under makeup. I have combo/oily skin that is dehydrated.I used to be so afraid of using super hydrating/moisturizing products because I was afraid they'd make me oilier, but finding the right combo of products for your skin can help a LOT. Personally, what works best for me is using a super moisturizing cream at night and/or even a facial oil. I currently use the Drunk Elephant TLC Framboos, with marula oil mixed in and then topped with their protini moisturizer at night. Previous to Protini coming out I had been using the Belif True Cream Moisturizing bomb (its a bit thicker, but even more moisturizing than the Aqua bomb so better at night!) as my night moisturizer and it worked really well too. Something to REALLY pack the hydration and moisture. Then during the day, look for a gel-moisturizer because it will lock in that hydration, but be light on the skin and not make you more oily. I also like using a hydrating serum under my moisturizer. DE B-hydra gel or Belif Hungarian water essense are my faves, and then I use Belif Aqua Bomb on top. Other really good gel-moisturizers I've tried that haven't made my skin oilier are the Tatcha Water cream, Origins Ginzing, and Tarte Drink of H2O (though a few friends told me that made their skin burn when applied, but I never had that issue with it). Do some googling too on hydrating vs moisturizing, because there is a difference and I found it to be really helpful! Ever since I got my skincare together and really started packing in the hydration my oils have really calmed down quite a bit. Don't get me wrong, I fully believe if you have oily skin you will most likely always have oily skin, but it's VERY manageable now vs just being a total oil slick mess

I also have oily dehydrated skin, @Katelyn31, and do use a variety of products, some that are marketed for oily skin and some that are marketed more for dry skin. Like @TrysBeautyItems, I try to pay attention to ingredients and what a product can do for me. That means I often like a heavier moisturizer at night, for instance. I'm also a big fan of using several light hydrating layers (serums, essences, toners. etc) in order to combat the oil. Skincare is always YMMV and all about finding the right products that work for *you*!

Re: Using skincare for dry skin on oily skin??

Dry is a skin type that lacks oil production. Dehydrated is lacking water and is a condition.

However, some products for dry skin are too much, heavy, for other skin types. Products marketed for oily skin a lot of times contain drying ingredients, that cause the excess oil.

I pick products on what ingredients work for me, not necessarily marketing. i.e. alcohol dent. is the drying type. Higher up the ingredient list, the higher amount of that ingredient is used.

Philosophy purity made simple rebalanced my skin and has stayed balanced. Facial oil also helps regulate oil. Oil removes oil. Also don't use hot water, hot/heat dries out the skin.

@Katelyn31 what exact products do you use currently?

These are the products I use. For the two moisturizers, I use the L’Oréal one in the morning and the Fab Pore one at night.

Thanks for the pictures.

Personally, I don't like witch hazel. The cleanser has it as well, could be too much of witch hazel for your skin. Have you noticed a difference in excess oil without using the toner?

The pore lotion and cleanser do have ingredients that could be contributing to oil, like silicone, salicylic acid, mint. SA, mint, witch hazel are all high in salicylates. Using a lot of the similar ingredients can backfire.

The l'oréal does have silicone and drying alcohol in the first couple ingredients. Without changing products out, all at the same time, stop the toner and see how your skin is. Do you have acne and clogged pores, hence the witch hazel and pore products?

Yes I do.

RE: Using skincare for dry skin on oily skin??

I have oily combination skin (very oily forehead, nose and chin | normal to dry cheeks) and I recently learned the same thing. I think you could settle somewhere in the middle. By that I mean still using non harsh gel or foam cleansers but incorporating those hydrating products like: (1) a hydrating alcohol free toner, (2) a serum and/or hydrating mist, (3) an oil-free gel-cream / cream moisturizer. Add lightweight moisture that will indeed hydrate without the possible heaviness of thick(er) oil infused products. Some oils are said to stabilize sebum secretion though so you may want to see which option (using minimal oil or no oil) will work out for you. I stopped drying my face after cleansing and resorted to letting it get damp naturally before applying moisturizer to lock in more moisture and it’s been good to my skin. Hope I helped in some way.
