Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge 2024

Hello, BIC Beauties! If the idea of makeup capsules piques your curiosity, or you're interested in seeing what's in the beauty collection or weekly makeup bag of your fellow BIC beauties, jump right on in - with questions, comments or a capsule of your own to share.
0 - 8.18 edit capsule post 1.jpg
0 - 8.18 edit capsule post 2.jpg
0 - 8.18 edit capsule post 4.jpg
To add a fun take on putting together a makeup capsule, I've included theme(s) for the weekly capsule - some weeks, I have enough products in my stash (eek!) to make a whole capsule based on the prompt; other weeks, I have just one or two items that fit neatly within theme.

Whether you find yourself in the same place or somewhere in between, jump right on it and share your weekly makeup capsule. Check out the FAQ section below ⤵️ for more info on this challenge.

CURRENT MAKEUP CAPSULE THEME:

Week 52 (December 23 - December 29) - The Holiday Glam Makeup Capsule and/or  The "2024 Makeup Capsule Collection" Makeup Capsule - Some options for us to close out the makeup capsules for 2024 (or to kick start 2025)!

Show us the beauties you use when you want to add glitz and glam (or, that up the glitz and glam element) to your makeup look.

and/or

Curate a bag with your go-to, GOAT, ride-or-die products that would make up your ultimate makeup capsule collection (for 2024). If it's too much to put together a creme de la creme capsule or if you're at your best with options, consider putting together a makeup capsules of one or more favorites you discovered (or re-discovered) in 2024.

FAQs: [Updated 4.28.2024]

Spoiler

What is a capsule makeup collection?

A capsule makeup collection is a selection of makeup products that can be used to put together different looks for a variety of occasions. For some of us, that may mean a group of essential products for your everyday look plus a few extra items for a more glam or dramatic look; and, for others of us, that may mean, a lineup of our holy grail product(s) in each makeup category. My ideal capsule makeup collection probably falls somewhere in between - we'll (hopefully) find out at the end of the year! I don't see myself as a minimalist, but I don't have an extensive collection of makeup either. I appreciate the collections of people who fall within both camps but I float somewhere in between - on the one hand, my brow product collection would earn a gold star if we were using a minimalist approach to makeup; my lip product lineup, on the other hand, would not. 🤣 It would most definitely not.

Why have a capsule makeup collection?

Everyone will have their own reasons for having (or not having) a more streamlined makeup collection. Over the years, I've just become more interested in having less beauty products on hand (well, except for lip products, lol) - a handful of items I use or reach for more frequently with maybe a few additional products that are go-to's for me for special events or occasions.  Don't get me wrong, I love trying new products and I don't see that changing. I just like the idea of having a simpler collection (I appreciate that "simpler" can be relative), curated to my needs and lifestyle.

Why weekly?
A few years ago, beauty & lifestyle blogger Serein Wu, did a weekly series (on her blog and YouTube channel), Makeup Bag Monday, where she rotated her makeup bag each week with new product launches and makeup already in her collection. Every Monday, she shared the products she selected for the upcoming week and provided detailed makeup reviews on the makeup she used for the previous week. I may not post detailed reviews, but will at least try to include a weekly recap (probably at the end of the week) of what products I like and which ones didn't work for me.  If weekly works for you, great. If not, feel free to join in based on what works best for you.

What if I don't have enough products to fit the theme for a full face?

No need for your entire makeup capsule to fit the weekly theme(s). Just one will do. And, even if you don't have one that fits squarely within a theme, feel free to post your makeup capsule. We'd love to see what you're using and hear your feedback on the products as you put them to use.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@missjeanie  Great picks!! I am obsessed with those Ami Cole glosses!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@ather @Aren’t they just the best!! I was blown away with how much I’ve fallen for the formula!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@missjeanie  so good! It’s in my capsule this week too!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Wow pretty pictures @missjeanie I spy so many great items in your capsule, especially the Givenchy powder and the DM Colorfix.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@AznAngelLiz The Givenchy is just so lovely. I’ve been forcing myself to get use out of other powders always wanting to reach for this one. The DM is also so much more versatile than I thought it would be! I thought it would be a lip product for me, but I’m loving it most as a blush!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

I love your capsule photos, the heart is a sweet touch 💝😍 @missjeanie You beautifully curated this one, wow!

And the flower on the Givenchy Powder is stunning, it's in perfect shape 🤩 how did they do that? I love fancy touches like that. 😉

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Thanks @CynthieLu !!!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@missjeanie, I love seeing your capsules. We’ll all have different sizes when it comes to our capsules and what our ideal collection will look like. Part of this adventure is finding what is a good collection for you.

I spy some beauties I love also in this week’s capsule - the NARS primer is a go to for me; I feel like every other eye primer I use or have used (including for this challenge) is just auditioning to be its understudy. 😆 Loooove those 2 Ami Cole lip oils! 🩷♥️

Oh, I’ll be very interested to hear your thoughts on the about face products at the end of the week.I’ve had my eye on a few items from the brand, including that new foundation (even though ummm, my stash is hardly lacking in foundations I already love).

P.S. Yaaaay for a declutter this week! 🙌🏼

P.P.S. Do you think for the Chanel lip balm, it might work if you sliced off part of the balm and mixed it along with some clear lip balm, into an empty jar. Apply it with your fingers or a lip brush. The mix of the Chanel and some lip balm might diffuse the color a little and make it less drying on your lips.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Oh!! @itsfi  I’d also considered doing a mix with the Chanel, but I fear I’d use a pot version even less.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Oh, that would defeat the purpose. Hmmm, I wonder how you might reach for the Chanel more @missjeanie?

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi @I feel like we might need a ‘repurposed’ challenge week??? Products you’ve turned into something you didn’t originally intend them to be?? I might actually try it out as a blush!!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Oh, that's a good one @missjeanie! Taking notes ...

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi I’ve been mixing the About Face foundation in here and there and the more I use it the more I like it. The doe foot applicator is kinda weird for me, simply because it doesn’t come in or out of the bottle as easily as I think it should. I’m the only one using my foundations so the idea of a doe foot doesn’t bother me. The foundation is best worn for me (so far anyhow) in a more sheer layer with hydrating, moisturizing, base products. It wears really nicely through the day, lasting about 8 hours without touch ups that way. The ‘paints’ I’ve been mixing and using as a one and done shadow look. I’ve only used them a few times but I can see how more creatives would love them. For me I suspect mixing is going to be too much work early in the mornings. I’m going to keep and eye for other shades though… I’m not done playing with these yet!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Oh my goodness, thank you so much for all this fantastic information @missjeanie! I'm bookmarking your post and making a note of your tips & tricks. I have a small-ish cart with a few about face products. Not sure I'm ready to go for it yet, but I have had my eye on that foundation.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi I’m going to keep an eye out for when you finally pull the trigger! I’m going to keep an eye out for their displays again, see if anything else peaks my curiosity.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@missjeanie, I have to see if there's an Ulta store near me that carries the foundation range, then find a way to be conveniently "in the area" since the closest in a couple of directions are both at least a 45 minute drive. Hopefully the one near the Home Depot will have the foundation in stock. I'm sure I can come up with a home improvement project I need to move up on the "to do" list. 🤣

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi the more I use it... the more I'm falling for this one!  I don't need another foundation... but there may be another one or two on my list... the struggle to balance between 'oh newwwww' and 'pan it' is real.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@missjeanie You came up with a wonderful red and gold themed capsule for the LNY capsule. The Winky Luxe blush is sooo cute. I saw  a display at a larger Shopper's Drug Mart. I am in awe of you lippies. So many beautiful shades and brands.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@Mellmars1185 Good to know about Winky Luxe at Shoppers!!
And thanks! I’m hoping these challenges will have me using some of these lip products a little more often!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

So ... Long time no see... BIC has been having a bit of a time and not letting me in for the last few weeks with one small exception last week.  Fingers crossed I can keep logging in now!

Week 6 -- Black owned beauty recap!

Only one real dud in the dang DM balm thingie that I can't figure out.  A few meh's and a few loves.  A good week of products!

426512700_299901769377599_8278293348860549924_n.jpg

Spoiler
-Foundations -- I found the Uoma to be a bit dry looking on my skin so I'm thinking I'll try this one again in the warmer weather when my skin isn't quite so dry.  It didn't look awful, but just more matte and dry than I'd like.  The Fenty ease drops... love em.  They are truely easy for me.  I took these on a weekend away and was quite happy to have something in a hotel room with dim lighting that I knew I could slap on without too much care.
-Colour Corrector -- I wish there was a better applicator/packaging on this one.  The formula is okay, not a favourite, but the applicator is a mess. Too big for my eye contours and the product just moves around on the tip of the packaging.  If this was in a doe foot format, it'd be so much easier to use.
-Pat McGrath under eye powder.  This one is okay.  It's not my favourite, but I really find pressed powders easier for travel.  This one is looking close to finished so I may try to pan it this year.  The formula isn't my all time favourite for under eye, but it's lovely on the rest of my face.  I also find this formula doesn't make my foundation and concealer look darker so that's a big plus.
-DM Face balm thingie in translucent.  I still don't get this.  I tried it on four days and said forget it the rest of the week.  It doesn't fill pores, my make up slides around and doesn't last any longer... dare I say I look greasy with this if I try and use it without foundation products?  I just don't know how to use it in a way that works for me. I don't know anyone that I'd be comfortable gifting a used product like this to, so I'm going to keep it around and see if I can muster up the desire to try it again at some point.
-PMG Shadow Primer -- This is nice.  Not as loved as my Nars Pro Prime, but it's still effective at helping my shadows last on my oily lids.
-Fenty Mascara.  This was a little sample I had that I just opened up for this week.  It's nice.  No flaking, no smudging, the brush has some flatter sides to it, but a natural bristle that I prefer.  I didn't find it gave as much volume as others that I really love, but it was still a solid mascara.  I have tons of mascara at the moment so I don't think I'd purchase... by the time I work through my stash there will be too many other new options.

Spoiler
LYS Cream blush in Passion -- This just doesn't have the lasting power of other cream products in my stash.  The shade is lovely, but I only wore it once as I was falling for the Fenty.  This is okay if I were to set it with a powder blush but I don't usually double blush.

Fenty Cream Blush in Bikini Martini-- This one... I just adore it.  The shade looks scary in pan, but I'm living in my blush era of late and this one just looks so spring-y.  It lasts on me much better than the LYS and if/when I go overboard a little setting powder takes it down enough that I can get away with it. Looking forward to using this one again!

Fenty Cream Bronzer -- I only used this twice as I just forgot.  I'm not a big bronzer user to start with and on work days I'm on auto-pilot with the same routine I do most days.  That said, the formula practically blends itself and this shade doesn't look orange on me at all.  This is such a great formula and shade.

Fenty Shadows -- These just... are far too average.  I included this so that I had a smaller palette to travel with and it was okay, but nothing to write home about.

PMGL 4 pan -- The shades here are nice but theyre too dark for a stand alone palette for me.  I need to mix in something in the champaign or light beige colour families.  Formula is great though and VERY pigmented.

PMGL 6 pan -- There are two shades in here that are nice as one and done shades for me.  I kind of forgot I had this palette and am glad I got to use it.  That said... there's nothing 'wow' ing me here.  But.. if these happen to be your favourite shades the formula is lovely.

LIPSSSSSS
Fenty Cream Lip Gloss -- I still don't get why people go crazy over these lip glosses.  It's okay, but to me it's a very average formula.  I'd be up for panning the two of these I own someday. The shades are nice enough, but I don't get anything special about the formula.

Fenty Lip Stains -- All the yes here.  They go on so nicely if they're blotted or full on glossy pigment.  They fade in the nicest way possible once they do start to fade.  The shades I have are great.  Would be nice if they came out with some more nude shades to compliment the more vibrant ones they have now. Non drying, and so easy to wear.

Ami Cole Lip Oil in Romance-- now this... this is a special formula.  I love the shade, it's much more sheer than it looks in the tube, it's what I call a gateway red... it's red, but not like a woahhhhh in your face red.  I need there to be like 40 shades in this formula.

Pat McGrath Gloss -- It turns out I have way more of these than I thought, all great shades, easy to wear and an A formula.  it's more of a traditional formula, but one of the best of that type out there.  These are glosses that honestly I'd like to wear more often, but they just get lost in my collection.

PMGL Lip Balm in Love Supreme - This another one that is easy to wear.  The balm isn't as moisturising as a lip mask, but it's nice.  It's also easy to put on without a mirror.  The shade is pigmented enough that I can see it, but it's not overwhelming.  This one may be going into my desk at work as an easy to reach for product.  This particular shade goes with just about any look that I do (they don't tend to vary too much lol) and the easy factor makes it for a good candidate to live there.

PMGL Luxetrance in Wrecked -- Great berry purple shade that makes a statement lip.  Easy to wear, fades nicely, I did have to touch up a few times, but it looked great all day.  I really like this one.

MAC x Taraji P Henson Viva Glam -- This is one that I kinda snuck in... not really Black owned, but Black collaborated.  This is another purple-y berry, though a bit brighter than the PMGL Wrecked.  I quite enjoyed this one as well.  MAC lip formulas are one that I always enjoy and always collect as I happen upon shades that I like.  I think they're probably the brand of lip products that I own the most of and I'm not mad at that.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@missjeanie  I’m still struggling to get on! I have to clear my cookies every time I want to get on. I’m glad I found a way tho! I missed it! Glad you got back on!
