Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge 2024

Hello, BIC Beauties! If the idea of makeup capsules piques your curiosity, or you're interested in seeing what's in the beauty collection or weekly makeup bag of your fellow BIC beauties, jump right on in - with questions, comments or a capsule of your own to share.
0 - 8.18 edit capsule post 1.jpg
0 - 8.18 edit capsule post 2.jpg
0 - 8.18 edit capsule post 4.jpg
To add a fun take on putting together a makeup capsule, I've included theme(s) for the weekly capsule - some weeks, I have enough products in my stash (eek!) to make a whole capsule based on the prompt; other weeks, I have just one or two items that fit neatly within theme.

Whether you find yourself in the same place or somewhere in between, jump right on it and share your weekly makeup capsule. Check out the FAQ section below ⤵️ for more info on this challenge.

CURRENT MAKEUP CAPSULE THEME:

Week 52 (December 23 - December 29) - The Holiday Glam Makeup Capsule and/or  The "2024 Makeup Capsule Collection" Makeup Capsule - Some options for us to close out the makeup capsules for 2024 (or to kick start 2025)!

Show us the beauties you use when you want to add glitz and glam (or, that up the glitz and glam element) to your makeup look.

and/or

Curate a bag with your go-to, GOAT, ride-or-die products that would make up your ultimate makeup capsule collection (for 2024). If it's too much to put together a creme de la creme capsule or if you're at your best with options, consider putting together a makeup capsules of one or more favorites you discovered (or re-discovered) in 2024.

What is a capsule makeup collection?

A capsule makeup collection is a selection of makeup products that can be used to put together different looks for a variety of occasions. For some of us, that may mean a group of essential products for your everyday look plus a few extra items for a more glam or dramatic look; and, for others of us, that may mean, a lineup of our holy grail product(s) in each makeup category. My ideal capsule makeup collection probably falls somewhere in between - we'll (hopefully) find out at the end of the year! I don't see myself as a minimalist, but I don't have an extensive collection of makeup either. I appreciate the collections of people who fall within both camps but I float somewhere in between - on the one hand, my brow product collection would earn a gold star if we were using a minimalist approach to makeup; my lip product lineup, on the other hand, would not. 🤣 It would most definitely not.

Why have a capsule makeup collection?

Everyone will have their own reasons for having (or not having) a more streamlined makeup collection. Over the years, I've just become more interested in having less beauty products on hand (well, except for lip products, lol) - a handful of items I use or reach for more frequently with maybe a few additional products that are go-to's for me for special events or occasions.  Don't get me wrong, I love trying new products and I don't see that changing. I just like the idea of having a simpler collection (I appreciate that "simpler" can be relative), curated to my needs and lifestyle.

Why weekly?
A few years ago, beauty & lifestyle blogger Serein Wu, did a weekly series (on her blog and YouTube channel), Makeup Bag Monday, where she rotated her makeup bag each week with new product launches and makeup already in her collection. Every Monday, she shared the products she selected for the upcoming week and provided detailed makeup reviews on the makeup she used for the previous week. I may not post detailed reviews, but will at least try to include a weekly recap (probably at the end of the week) of what products I like and which ones didn't work for me.  If weekly works for you, great. If not, feel free to join in based on what works best for you.

What if I don't have enough products to fit the theme for a full face?

No need for your entire makeup capsule to fit the weekly theme(s). Just one will do. And, even if you don't have one that fits squarely within a theme, feel free to post your makeup capsule. We'd love to see what you're using and hear your feedback on the products as you put them to use.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

And a huge Thank you!! For a fabulous and fun year of capsules @itsfi It is approaching, a very busy season. I can't even wrap my mind around everything I need to do accomplish before Christmas 🙈 and you folks in the US have Thanksgiving now. That's a lot! I hope you have a lovely turkey day and enjoy it all so much. 🧡🤎

My favorite part of the Capsule Challenge has been seeing what everyone has picked and the conversations after. 😀

Is this a theme? Putting on the Glitz? Something focused on sparkles, glitter, highlights and everything bright? I feel like it must have been but I'll go back and check. 😜

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@CynthieLu, there have been some prompts that could/did lend themselves to sparkle 😉 or maybe all of them could. 😊 An actual glitz and glam theme though has  been set for the end of the year, so a favorite theme to come works.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Ahhh yes, I think a few did lend to this quality. I know a few times I went looking for something shiny and bright 😎☀️ @itsfi

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi,

Favorites 🤔

These all basically reflect my own biases/preferences, buuuuttttt you asked

  • Black owned brands
  • Stick week!!!!
  • One brand or all the brands
  • Global Capsule
  • Dynamic Duos/Trios
  • Fast & Furious

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

This is what I was looking for @danielledanielle; thank you! Half of the themes you mentioned are already in play for the first quarter of next year 😍 and the other half looks like they have an excellent chance of being prompts for next year as well. 👍

Edited to add: There's a sticks 2.0 week on the schedule in December.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

I saw! 🫶🏽 You know I'm ready 😎 @itsfi

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Week 47 - The "Please Don't Go" Makeup Capsule

47 - Discontinued 1.jpg

The Goods:

Spoiler
Complexion

  • Concealer: Uoma Beauty Stay Woke Concealer - I *think* Uoma Beauty is still around (?), and if so, then this'll be my new-to-me contribution. I like their Say What?! Foundation a lot and have had their concealer in my collection for a while. I've pretty much broken my rule on the number of concealers to have open and in use (so much for just bending the rule just a little 😂) so why not add this one to the rotation?!

  • Setting Powder: Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder - this is the OG original version (contains talc) - I thought this was being discontinued for the non-talc version but I still see this on the website. Interesting. This was the very first setting powder I was introduced to, so it does hold sentimental value.

Eyes
  • Eyeshadow:  My plan is to rotate primarily between this GXVE BY GWEN STEFANI Eye See in Color Clean Multidimensional Eyeshadow Palette Simple Kind Of Life (gratis) are the type of boring, barely there colors that I tend to gravitate towards (though I wouldn't mind a stronger color payoff from a couple of these shades) and the Cle de Peau Beaute Eye Color Quad - CdP has reformulated and repacked their eyeshadows. This color family is still available (with some slight color variation) in the new formulation and packaging, but this one is a couple (?) years old. This is a backup refill I have that I'm using for the photo - my current one is in a dusty, bruised condition from use; I'll likely re-home this one soon ... ish (it's so pretty and I like the shades so ... nope, must find a new home for it. Focus, Fi!)

  • Eyeliner: Laura Mercier Cake Tightline (the orignal version) x3 - These were my gateway to eyeliners and I love them. They've been redesigned, reformulated and repackaged, so much so that the new feels like a different product to me. These are still in my top 5 eyeliners (all categories). I have shades Black Ebony, Blue Marine and Mahogany Brown. They had other shades back in the day - grey, a deep green, deep plum and maroon red.

  • Tool for cat eye: I don't think the SEPHORA COLLECTION Makeup Tape is available any longer. I learned about this handy dandy tool from the fabulous @Missnur. The cat eye is still something that is a work in progress, but this tape makes it easier to do (or to try to do).

Cheeks
  • Blush: Stila Convertible Color in shades Lillium, Magnolia and Forget Me Not (not pictured). Lillium is still available (may go by Gerbera as well); the other two shades have been discontinued.

  • Highlight: Guerlain Nude Terracotta Highlighting Stick - I thought this was a bronzer stick when I first saw it in my bin. This, if I'm remembering right, was a gwp a while ago too.

I think we'll be revisiting blushlights again this week with the Stila and Guerlain items.

  • Cheek Palette: I spent a long time searching for this Dior Backstage Contour Palette 001 Universal - every time I would see a CCE outlet store, I'd try to find a reason we needed to be in the outlet mall. Hahaha! Despite its name, this is not a universal palette, but for my light complected skin, the colors can work as bronzer, contour and eyeshadows. Oooh, I may need to try this out in the next quick & easy capsule theme.

Lips
  • Sephora Collection #lipstories lip balm Ditching Class - my favorite shade in this discontinued line was Date Night. I still have backups of it - such a great color, but I'll be going with Ditching Class as a lip option this week. This shade probably won't show up very well on my lips so I'll either find a way to make it work and keep it in my stash or end upditching it. 😉

  • Lipstick Queen Frog Prince@missjeanie mentioned this one (and used hers too, I recall) months back and I've had it on my list of things to search for in my stash. I'd forgotten how mini (and cute) this color changing lip balm is.

  • Revlon Colorburst Lip Butter - 040 Red Velvet - ohhh how I miss the Revlon lip butters. The Pink Truffle shade was my go to, and I have a feeling I have one last one somewhere in my lip bin. I'm pretty sure I picked up this red color because of its name "Red Velvet".  Let's see if it's a red worth keeping.

47 - Discontinued 3.jpg

Thanks so much @CynthieLu for this fun capsule theme - it was a little walk down memory lane for me. I'm both surprised and happy (happily surprised?) that these are still kicking - they passed the look and smell test, and they didn't break me out when I did a patch test on them last night.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

I still feel the credit goes to you and your way of coming up with these interesting threads and themes that are so fun to be involved in @itsfi 🙏🙏 but I got a lot of joy looking through the discontinued items in your stash. I never used the old OG Laura Mercier powder I've heard sooooo much about it on the threads over the years. It's like a blast from the past.

As soon as a read you didn't think Sephora Beauty tape was available anymore I had to go check, I feel like the last roll I bought wasn't that long ago but maybe it has been a good long while. The stuff was so handy!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

My stash of discontinued products (or actually my stash of backups) both alarms and appeases me, @CynthieLu 😂  On the one hand, there are very, very few makeup products that I’ve gone through and replenished. On the other hand, with these no longer being available, I am glad I have backups of the ones I do - looking at you, Laura Mercier tightliner. 👀

💯 blast from the past. Some of these brought me back to when I first started wearing makeup.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Sort of a hybrid capsule this week. It's The "Please don't go Make Up Capsule" with a little Newness blended in. 😉

Thank you for this theme @itsfi 🙏💕

I appreciate this opportunity to showcase our no longer available loves. Like our own little tribute's, and the newness ties in perfectly with the just past sale. 🙏

1000026571.jpg

Please don't go 😭😭😭

SEPHORA COLLECTION Eye Mask Patches for Dark Circles + De-Puffing Cucumber in Caffeine

NARS Pro-Prime™ Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base Original

Too Faced Sweet Peach Palette

Morphe Pumpkin Spice lip liner

A few Limited Editions I'm sad I will not be able to get again

so I think they deserved to be included in this week's capsule.

One/Size Wicked broom brush 🧹

Hourglass Jelly Fish face palette 🪼

Fenty holiday holographic lip luminizer 💋

A cute mini Danessa Myricks Beauty Yummy Skin Blurring Balm Powder - Tinted Primer & Foundation Universal that I seriously hope becomes a size you can purchase one day. It's so handy!!

And I'm afraid all 3 of the lippies from Tom Ford have disappeared from Canadian distributor's.

1000026574.jpg

These are Insatiable, Night Mauve and Indian Rose 🌹💔

The Fit:

1000026575.jpg

The brushes would have fit but I didn't want to squish them. 🤗

The Brand Spanking New-ness I included is: 💝

The limited edition shades from Danessa Myricks Beauty Yummy Skin 4-Ever Flushed Lip and Cheek Set

In shades Spiced Latte and Red Velvet.

These might be released as stand alone shades in the future. 🔮

And just to round my capsule I added:

Danessa Myricks Beauty Yummy Skin Soothing Serum Skin Tint Foundation with Peptides + Ceramides 4

Danessa Myricks Beauty Yummy Skin Lift & Flex Hydrating Concealer With Hyaluronic Acid & Caffeine 4

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Oh no, it's YOU @CynthieLu we have to thank for inspiring the discontined / "Please, don't go" capsule prompt.

Oooouh, a hybrid capsule - fun to have a mix of products, cynthielu ❣️ I spy some beauties that I've really enjoyed using.

That first photo is a beauty - really love the tie-in and contrast in tones from the blanket and the bag - looks marvelous! And the color story of your products for this week's capsule really adds a pretty pop - comfy, cozy, fall feels! 😍

Excited to see what newness you picked up. I didn't pick up much makeup - at least, not that I remember? 😅 More lips than I thought I would but far less than I have in the past (though we have a lot more holiday season in the works, hahaha!). I received a shipping delay notification for a couple of things, but it's all good. I picked up most of my gifts / stocking stuffers already and delayed gratification won't be such a bad thing. I have plenty of other toys to play with. 😝

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Awww thanks 💕

Danessa Myrick's products against this faux fur really do kinda make a fun photo. I don't break this out very often, it's actually a vest my kiddo found in a thrift store. When he was young he thought it was pretty cool but he changes his style as he goes and that's fun to see evolve. But this spends the majority of the time in his closet these days. So once in awhile I give it a tiny job to help with the boredom 😜 @itsfi

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@CynthieLu, if he’s willing to loan it out to you, it makes for a fab background for photos. 📷

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

He's fine with a quick photo, bless him, but he watches me carefully. I think he's worried I'll try to wear it 😂 @itsfi

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

A couple of adjustments to this week's capsule for the upcoming weekend, and a recap of what's staying and what's moving on.

First, the adjustments.

46 - weekend modifications.jpg

46 - weekend mod 2.jpg

Spoiler

On days I wear one of the battling red lipsticks (e.g., weekend and certain Fridays), I generally keep my daytime makeup pretty simple.

😎  U Beauty The Super Tinted Hydrator is GLOWY. It's actually too glowy for me and I work to tone it down a bit (and mattify and set it because it also has a tacky to the touch feel) with the ONE/SIZE by Patrick Starrr Mini On 'Til Dawn Mattifying Waterproof Setting Spray 1 oz/ 46 mL (not pictured). I've found the best way to apply this on my normal-to-dry, dehydrated, slightly sensitive skin with a tendency to redness, is with a makeup sponge. This one is from Sonia Kashuk and is one of my favorites - in my top 3, probably top  2, come to think of it. The U Beauty is part of this years @ pan it! challenge.

🌺  A couple of layers of the U Beauty will generally do, but I like to use the LYS Beauty Triple Fix Brightening Concealer to cover dark spots and any redness around my nose that comes through the U Beauty tint more than I like. I blend the concealer in with my fingers.

💋   Sulwhasoo Glowing Lip Balm has been my go-to lip prep before wearing red lipstick. It's easy to apply, moisturizes without being heavy or goopy, and absorbs smoothly and quickly.

And now, the recap.

46 - Time Capsule likes.jpg

Spoiler
Top Shelf: A few of these have been designated "Top Shelf" throughout the year; if I'm remembering right, it's all the GOATs from this particular capsule, which are marked with a, wait for it ... 🐐 emoji; I'll just list / tag those. There are a couple of products tat are GOAT-worthy but are just needing to meet a couple of requirements I put on myself before an item can be so deginated (e.g., I have to have gone through at least 2 of the product(s)). Additions to the Top Shelf are marked with a 🏆 emoji.

🐐  DIOR Capture Dreamskin 1-Minute Mask 2.5 oz / 75 mL Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Base Moisturizer & Primer with Vitamin C + Hyaluronic Acid 1.7 oz/... Tower 28 Beauty SunnyDays SPF 30 Tinted Sunscreen Foundation SEPHORA COLLECTION Microsmooth Multi-Tasking Baked Face Powder Foundation

🏆  Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez Soft Pinch Tinted Lip Oil Stain Delight - wears comfortably, is a good red for me - not too deep, not too bright - lightly hydrating, and it leaves a beautiful stain.

🏆  Makeup by Mario Master Mattes Brightening Pencil - Light 1 (discontinued) - I still have a good amount of product left but at some point, I'm going to have to seriously focus on looking for a replacement - the shade on this is perfect 😘 for my waterline and the formula on this is fantastic!

🏆  Rhode Peptide Lip Treatment - the original, untinted versions are my favorite and I have a special fondness for the unscented and the salted caramel scented ones. This will earn GOAT status soon.

🏆  Natasha Denona Biba Eyeshadow Palette - my all time favorite of her larger palettes is probably the Glam or Nudes palette but Biba holds its own, some for sentimental reasons but the shadows in here - formulation, performance and shade are good!

🏆  CLIO Kill Lash Superproof Mascara 01 Long Curling - there are days when my eye look consists of just curling my lashes and using this mascara. 💖 There are other variation within the line and I'm excited to give them a go - may even be the focus of a future throwdown. 🥊

Thank you again @peculiarzmakeup for this magnificent theme!

Declutters

46 - Time Capsule Declutters (CR).jpg

Spoiler

Declutters this week came from round 2 of the battle of the red lipsticks and what that declutter inspired. Tagging some BIC'ers who expressed interest in that showdown - @ather @CynthieLu - along with Red Lipstick Throwdown, Round 2 results.

The pretty photo masks the hurt of having to declutter these beauties. 😂

💋  Gucci Transfer-Proof Matte Liquid Lipstick 25* Goldie Red is just too fussy in application. I would work through it if the shade was more suited for me. It does have neutral undertones but the shade itself leans a litte orange on my lips, more so than I'm comfortable with.

💄  I went through some of my stash and pulled out Gucci Transfer-Proof Matte Liquid Lipstick 413 Cornelia Pink to see if this was equally fussy. It's fussy in a different way. It didn't bleed the way Goldie Red did on me; instead, it didn't glide on as smoothly as I remembered, skipping about and the color is too pale for me, though if it didn't have the other issues, I think I could have made it work.

💋  I'm not sure what I was thinking when I purchased SEPHORA COLLECTION Retractable Rouge Gel Lip Liner 22 mid day rosé - the color is lovely, just not lovely on my lips - too pale, too pink, too chalky. 😬

I will see if the local womens' shelter will take any or all of these. 💝

Declutter Dashboard:

Week-To-Date = 3

MonthYear-To-Date = 101

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi  loving this capsule, and great job with the declutters! 101 declutters this month?! wow, that's impressive! I really need to step up my decluttering game...I am working my way through trying to inventory my beauty collection, and in the process I've set aside a few products to declutter, but I'd like to (really should) do more.

Echoing what @CynthieLu  and @peculiarzmakeup  said, I love the case on that Sulwhasoo lippie! So cool! It looks like a sculpture.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Hahahaha! Error on my part - 101 is year to date. Thanks for catching that @caitbird

Ooouh, inventorying your beauty collection? I'm intrigued. I've tried doing that a few times over the years but never quite figure it out. Best I did was inventory my sheet masks a while back - it was a much easier process when I used up all of the ones I had stockpiled and then just started keeping a more manageable amount on hand.

Good luck to you and if you come up with a good system, do tell. I may start trying that again at some point, but right now, I'm focused on building my collection, with building involving a lot of whittling down and decluttering what I have and being selective in what I pick up. These capsules and the throw down / battles have been good with the decluttering but also in getting me in a good frame of mind for deciding what to buy at or around the release date and what can wait.

I may focus future capsules on being smaller in size - we'll see, lol. Some weeks lend themselves to that and others require options. Ha! 😂 It's been nice to have the structure of having my makeup for the week all set - I completely get that that isn't necessarily the norm for approaching one's look of the day or makeup on BIC, but for me, it's nice to not have to think too long about it every morning and the themes / prompts add a fun layer to it.

Sulwhasoo has some very beautiful product - formula wise as well as presentation. The lip balm is a fun one. They have tinted lip colors too that have an artistic case, but I'm more drawn to the packaging on the lip balm.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi  oh haha okay, well 101 for the year is still impressive! but now I don't feel quite so bad about how far behind I am in comparison 🤣

Inventorying my beauty collection is definitely a work in progress at this point. So far I've counted all my skincare foils and swatched all my eyeliners and single eyeshadows, and discovered that I have more skincare foils, eyeliners and single eyeshadows than I realized 😅 hopefully I can go through some more categories tomorrow and Monday!

I can definitely understand the appeal of having your makeup plans already decided in the morning and not having to spend time deciding on your look for the day. I often try to plan ahead with what makeup I'm going to wear with the day's outfit (usually chosen the night before), but whether or not I end up going through with it really depends on how much energy I have the morning of 😣

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

lol, it’s fascinating isn’t it @caitbird how quickly the foils can pile up?!! 😯 I have several category of products that need a good look through and declutter.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi  lol so true, I feel like I have skincare foils coming out of my ears right now! 🤣 I think it's partly because I have been more focused on trying to use up/finish full sized open products, and I kind of forgot to keep up with the foils at the same time. I am trying to rotate in my skincare foils into my project pan for these last couple of months, so hopefully that will help some!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Hahahaha @caitbird! It seems like there's always some part of the collection that is growing. 😆  While another is shrinking. Yaaaay for working on using your full size products! I've found that gives me a better idea for replenishing. Also a reminder that it takes a while to get through my stuff!
