Can I return an in store purchase by mail?

I do not live near a Sephora store, but recently on a trip to Denver I went to one of the locations where I bought an Ilia mascara among other things. After opening the mascara I realized the brush is not connected to the handle, so I can't use it. Can I exchange it for a new one? And if so, can I do so by mail? It is unlikely I will be able to drive several hours to make the exchange in person.
