It's the most wonderful time of the year!!!!  The holidays are coming!!! 🎄🎄🎄

Since the previous 2 years I had a similar thread I thought I would bring it back again this year.  Come and share your beauty or holiday tips, stories or anything that stood out for you during 2018 as we count down the days to a new year and celebrate the different holidays.

If you guys want... I can do the daily questions again. Starting December 1st, each day a new question will be asked related to either the holidays or beauty for 2018. If you have a question you would like me to use please pm me. I’ll add it to the list and tag you when it’s posted.

I love this annual thread, @veronika23! I remember discussing everything from beauty tips to Jello salad recipes (a delicacy I had never tried until I went to friends' family house in Dallas for Thanksgiving) in past years.

Thanks @txcatx! 🙂 Oh yeah those jello salads!!! I think some have marshmallow in them right? Or is that another one? 😄 I mainly remember the vintage recipe pics from past threads. lol

@veronika23 Yes, all those pastel jello salads topped with marshmallows, maraschino cherries, etc. They're so strange, but the history is pretty interesting. Like, gelatin used to be a delicacy enjoyed only by the wealthy because normal people didn't have cooks or time to extract gelatin from animal bones, but then along came packaged jello during industrialization and next thing you know, people were throwing canned fruit into powdered gelatin and calling it a salad.

@txcatx I didn't know this either! But I have experienced Jello Salad first hand and I'm always like, WHAT. IS. THIS. Someone must have been high when they decided jello, canned fruit, marshmallows, and sometimes cool-whip or VEGETABLES should all come together as a salad 🙂

@MissPuff Yes! I spent Thanksgiving at friends' house in Dallas, and their grandmother came out with not one, but three jello salads--pink, orange, and green. All with different fruits and some with marshmallows. 

The funny thing is when you realize similar foods exist in other cultures, like the mango "pudding" that my mom makes and can be found at some dim sum restaurants, which is essentially mango gelatin, chopped mango, and, like, sweetened condensed milk. 

And then there's aspic, which we discussed last time around...

@txcatx Oh YAAAAAAS! Mango pudding!!!! Oh I totally forgot about that, I LOVE that stuff. With condensed milk all over it?! 

Yeah, this is true, I'm sure all sorts of my ethnic food is weird! We do tofu fa (tofu pudding?) with ginger syrup and for sure, that's gotta be weird for americans. My first encounter with jello salad was indeed Thanksgiving too! Like a real, American style with all the fixings Thanksgiving. Everything on the table was foreign to us but the jello salad (served in a ring mold with lettuce or parsley garnish) was truly a whaaaaaaaaat moment. 

But no meat jello. I'm drawing the line at meat jello 🙂

@MissPuff I know! Who thinks to pour a sweet syrup over silken tofu and then top with canned fruit and call it a dessert? When I was a kid, I'd eat the fruit and leave the tofu, ha.
