Pan It! - 2022 Challenge

Welcome to the Pan It Challenge, 2022 Edition!!

I'm claiming a 2022 that's greater than our wildest imaginations, also for my longtimers this will be our FIFTH YEAR doing this challenge. Thanks to all who've stuck around and everyone who's tested themselves and jumped into the madness. You all are amazing 😘

The "Rules"

To accommodate a variety of interests, you all are encouraged to pick items to pan that are most suitable to your collections.  For some, this might mean focusing on a particular type of product (like lipstick) and for others this may include a larger variety spanning your entire makeup or skincare routine.

Getting Started (please share the following)

  • Which item(s) you would like to work on
  • How long you will work on said item
  • Goal: explore a new item, revisit an old item, decide whether to keep pass or trash, and/or completely finish item, etc.
  • Starting photo of item

Please Use This Thread To...

  • share what item(s) you are working on,
  • provide comparative progress photos of your item(s) monthly (at the beginning of the month when possible),
  • ask questions,
  • encourage others,
  • motivate others with the looks you create with your item(s)

Tips and Tricks to Panning/Getting Some Use Out of Your Stash:

Spoiler
  • Take photos!!  When you think you aren’t making a dent in anything look back at those photos, I’m certain you’ll see some changes 😃
  • If you goal is to hit pan or use something up entirely, try concentrating your brush/applicator in the same area each time you use it
  • Multitask your products: eyeshadows as highlighter, lipstick as blush, eyeshadow as brow powder, etc.
  • Layer eyeshadow to create different colors (this is especially helpful to get use out of shades you’re not fond of).
  • Have shadows with a ton of fall out?  Use water
  • Watching the progress of others’ can be fun but try not compare your progress to theirs.  We all use our makeup differently and have different goals.
  • Don’t restrict yourself to only using the item(s) you are working on.  It’s more than OK to incorporate other items or take a break!
  • Makeup should be fun….if you begin to dread doing your makeup because you made a commitment to use a product that you now hate, TOSS IT!  Do not force yourself to use up something you don’t like.  Move on to something else!  (This includes excluding particular shades from your goals if focusing on palettes, etc.)

Ideas to Help You Pan Those Items:

Spoiler
  • Roll the dice: number your items and use a random number generator to pick what you will use each (day/week/month/etc.)
  • Layer/Mask: items you are less fond of under things you like
  • Pan a Look: at the beginning of the week pick a look that you can wear everyday
  • Recreate: a look worn by a fellow BICer, celebrity, etc.
  • Spice up an "everyday" look by adding subtle pops of color (in the crease or on the lower lash line, mix lip products to make shades wearable, etc.)

Re: Pan It! - 2022 Challenge

@heavyhedon still amazing progress!!

Re: Pan It! - 2022 Challenge

Thanks @Samtian!

Re: Pan It! - 2022 Challenge

A few slight changes in that I’ve grown tired of the  tarte maracuja juicy lip shades for now.  I’ll come back to them after I’ve played in some newer colors I’ve brought in.   I’m making progress on the other shades.
The Kaja Joystick in Power up pink.  Ugh, it’s the most irritating design.  It’s not fun, it’s frustrating.  The mobile ‘joystick’ brush in the lid is awful.  Who wants to fight with their makeup brush to get product on it only to have a brush that moves against the will of their hand when applying it?    I like the powder itself for setting my undereyes but am using my own brush and never buying this again.  It’s unnecessarily bulky.   I’m considering taking a hot plate to the bottom and freeing the itty bitty pan from it’s ridiculously large packaging.

There we go, you are free little powder! And now you can be used by a brush that’s sanitized between uses;)

Re: Pan It! - 2022 Challenge

Woo-hoo, freedom for the powder!! Sometimes Kaja's packaging is more fun than functional which is annoying. Nice you were able to fix this one, @heartsmyface!!

Re: Pan It! - 2022 Challenge

@heartsmyface ...all that big packaging for the little pan? Wow lol glad you set it free!

Re: Pan It! - 2022 Challenge

@heartsmyface -- smart move, there's nothing like packaging that impedes use of the product! It's a pretty powder, I'm glad it's free now. Looks like you're taking down your goals at speed!

Re: Pan It! - 2022 Challenge

Nice modification and overall progress! @heartsmyface

Re: Pan It! - 2022 Challenge

Fly free little powder!!! 😉 Conceptually, the joystick design is kinda cute but not at the cost of functionality @heartsmyface. Ooh, I spy Lanolips. A handy balm this time of year, or any time of the year!

That red heart is adorable! ❤️

Re: Pan It! - 2022 Challenge

@itsfi  I unstuck it from the bottom with heat fairly easily only to find it didn’t fit out the top so there I was reassuring it I was going to get it out.  This is a sign I need more human interaction.
Lanolips are sooo effectively hydrating!  One of the downfalls of wanting to try everything is that gems like this get lost in the pile.  Plus they’re good to use on dry skin in general.
My husband printed the heart for me a few years ago with one of the 3-D printers.  Time consuming and before we had the heat settings perfected but I love it!

Re: Pan It! - 2022 Challenge

@heartsmyface Nice job! Excellent modification on the Kaja powder! I like your heart that you place your panning projects on!

Re: Pan It! - 2022 Challenge

@Mellmars1185  It’ll be much more pleasant to use now for sure.
Thanks, the heart was a Winners find a while back.  I love that it’s got a neutral terrazzo pattern while still being shiny.

Re: Pan It! - 2022 Challenge

Oh happy days for that little pan, @heartsmyface! That would have been…beyond frustrating. Happy that you found a solution to use it properly.

Re: Pan It! - 2022 Challenge

@eshoe   Kaja gets points for creativity and for photogenic products but.. no.   Beyond the first couple times using it, when the gimmick is a novelty, it’s too much effort for a powder you want to quickly apply before your concealer creases.

Re: Pan It! - 2022 Challenge

Excellent de-potting of the Kaja @heartsmyface. Kaja has clearly invested some R&D hours in design. Yet..! Another Powder product with a Brush that is less than ideal: Ilia 'Fade into you' setting powder- a loose translucent powder in a screw-out jar within the base of a travel Brush. The flow-through is minimal at best. Might be d/c'd?

Re: Pan It! - 2022 Challenge

They are definitely creative, @heartsmyface. I have been interested in the highlighter with the little ‘paint roller’ but am not so sure it would perform as cute as it looks🤷🏻‍♀️

Re: Pan It! - 2022 Challenge

Excited for my first update of 2022. I had some exciting progress in January. I hit pan on my Fenty cream bronzer which I used almost every time I did my makeup. I also loved using my Charlotte Tilbury cream shadow with diff eye looks. It got 11 uses in January so I’m more than half way to my 20 usage goal.

I also think my Dior concealer is getting quite low and I can now see down the tube so hopefully I will be done with this. Although I’m going to buy it again I want to get this used so it doesn’t go bad! Love this concealer.

My Ilia lip oil has been leaking pretty bad so I’m losing product which is disappointing so I won’t buy it again. Nice otherwise though so I’ll keep using it.

Also, since I’m a few days into feb I hit pan this morning on my Pretty Vulgar highlight!! I’m so happy! So since that goal is met I’m rolling that out and replacing with my Becca highlight in Opal. My goal is to hit pan on this highlight.

Pretty vulgar highlight has pan!!

Re: Pan It! - 2022 Challenge

Fabulous progress, @BluePaisley, so impressive!! Woo-hoo multiple pans!! Extra congrats on the PV highlighter!!

Re: Pan It! - 2022 Challenge

This is inspiring, @BluePaisley  Great to focus on a selection. Pity that the Ilia lip-oil is leaky! Nice shade.

Do you know of the miniature oar-shaped silicone Spatula, think it's called Every last drop? Can be used with concealer & gloss tubes, etc. Better than q.tips.

Re: Pan It! - 2022 Challenge

Great pans! @BluePaisley

Re: Pan It! - 2022 Challenge

@BluePaisley Great panning progress!

Re: Pan It! - 2022 Challenge

@BluePaisley   Great progress!  That ELF primer is really nice!   And oh gosh, the Becca is going to be sooo luxe after using the Pretty Vulgar for so long. I found the Pretty Vulgar highlighter applied unevenly and created the appearance of texture where there was none.
edit- I just scrolled down and read it’s your favourite!  Had I known sooner I would have sent mine to you!  I had one used maybe twice and one unopened from a subscription box that were recently decluttered
