Not sure about what I’m looking for do any help would be greatly appreciated

Re: Makeup

#OMG  Ever Since I Can Remember, The Category Has Always Been #Skin 😉 #SkinCareIsInCare

Re: Makeup

What’s the difference between sheer and matte etc

Re: Makeup

@newbie1977 @Sheer is very light color/coverage. Matte has no shine.

Re: Makeup

I’m kind of new to wearing makeup. I like lipstick but I’m a little inexperienced and being a guy and shy makes it hard to ask questions

Re: Makeup

@newbie1977 @Do you have a Sephora store near you? A beauty advisor could better assist in helping you pick out the products catered to you.

Re: Makeup

I love lipstick, and lip gloss, tinted lip balms - pretty much all the lip products. And there are many here who do as well, so you're in good company here at BIC, @newbie1977

Completely understand wanting to look pretty and there being a lot to take in when you're new to wearing makeup.  There's a few ways to go about it, and which approach you take will depend on what you're comfortable with and what you have available to you. A few ideas:

Asking Questions and Scoping Out Some Threads Here
There are a host of fun and informative threads here where you can learn tips, tricks and technique and ask questions. You can continue to do that on this thread as well. In addition to the ones @danielledanielle tagged, if you're specifically looking for something on lipstick, a few threads here that might be of interest to you include:

That said, if you have specific questions regarding lipsticks (or other lip products or lip look / lip application), feel free to post your question here.

That also goes for questions regarding other makeup products or techniques. Ask away. I get that you may not even know where to start asking questions, so, maybe take a look at some of the threads here or at some of the YT videos below and if questions come to mind, jot them down and come back here and ask away? Or, if there's a particular type of product or category of product (e.g., foundation, blush, lipstick) and thing you're interested in learning about it (e.g., how to apply it, how to decide what to use, or even what is it even for?) that might be a good starting point.

YouTube Tutorial Videos:
There are several videos out there on makeup for men and it can be overwhelming - it can also be challenging to know which to start out with, especially if you're new to makeup. A few that I think are worth checking out:

  • Channel: Wayne Goss |  Title of video is : "Masterclass: Mens Makeup" - the video is 4 years old (November 16, 2021) but it's a solid video on makeup (for men or women). He lays out a routine to get you started that is practical and touches upon several areas of makeup - products and application - for an everyday look for any man. This may be a good starting point for you, to get down the basics, work on technique, find and learn more about products, learn what you like / don't like, etc.
  • Channel: Robert Welsh  | Title of video is: "Natural Makeup tutorial for men - Natural everyday mens makeup" is also a good one. That's an even older video, going back to February 21, 2016
  • Channel: Sephora  |  Sephora also has videos on YouTube on men's makeup. One that may be worth looking into is titled "Easy, Everyday Men's Makeup" - this is more recent - May 28, 2025

In Person Tutorials:
If the option is available to you and if it's something you are comfortable with, stores like Sephora or Ulta offer makeup application classes. I'll post screenshots below of the steps you can take to sign up for an appointment for a makeup lesson at Sephora, if you are interested. No pressure. If you are interested, some things I might suggest before you make an appointment:

  • Call your local Sephora store (or the one where you would go for the service), ask to speak with the manager, and share with them what you're looking for in the service and whether there's a particular makeup artist that the manager believes would be a good fit that you might request for the lesson and what day(s) and times he/she/they would be available.
  • If you want, you might want to visit the Sephora store to see if that employees makeup and overall disposition is someone you are comfortable with. Getting your makeup done or learning to do makeup can bring up a lot of emotions and nerves so you want to be comfortable, we want you to be comfortable, and to have the right fit. That's no judgment on anybody, sometimes we get on really well with certain people.
  • Make an appointment - There's info on how to make an appointment in the sections below and also check out the comments and experiences on Sooooo... How did it go? The Beauty Studio Service Thread to get more tips and FYIs regarding beauty services offered at Sephora.

Re: Makeup

@newbie1977 , what is your personal style? Plus do you enjoy glam, are you more laid back, artsy, trying to build a skin routine...none of the above?

Usually, a good place to start is inspo.  You can watch IG/TT or go to Pinterest... You can go in store and get a feature focus (makeover on a single feature) or a full glam session where you can get personalized tips. (These have to be booked and they have a fee).

We also have a bunch of threads, and challenges... That could be a good start.  You can ask a question or just scroll to your delight

Re: Makeup

I definitely like reds and some pink lip sticks. I’m shy but in certain situations I like people to see my makeup

Re: Makeup

@newbie1977 , I get that

Is there any media/art you like?  That can be a good start too.  If anything, David Bowie is excellent Inspo in my opinion.

Re: Makeup

@newbie1977 is there a specific category at least to help narrow it down?

Re: Makeup

Just exploring makeup and wanting to look pretty to be honest

Re: Makeup

@newbie1977 I would highly recommend booking a makeup session at Sephora or asking a beauty advisor for help in store.
