UPDATE: we have a winner! Dragon Fruit got the most votes of the two masks. Thank you to those of you who voted and helped Origins make this decision!
Sephora and Origins have partnered to give the Beauty Insider Community an exciting sneak peek at brand new, unreleased products from Origins. Origins has created two masks, Dragon Fruit and Ginger Kombucha, and we want to get your feedback on both. Here are details about each mask:
1. Working name: Dragon Fruit
2. Working name: Ginger Kombucha
Once you learn more about each mask we want to hear your opinions. Origins will be asking you to vote on their Instagram (@Origins) during their 3-day voting period from April 8 - April 10.
I havent been on the boards in a while (probably around the time BT became BIC), so i appreciate Origins and Sephora including me in this test. Overall, I really liked both masks, I got to try them each once so far.
The Dragon Fruit made my face feel good afterwards, although I'm not sure how hydrating it was after one use. My skin is going through a seasonal change phase, so I'm dry in spots. I liked the smell, but then again I'm not overly sensitive to scents of products. I also didn't mind the walnut shells, but they were a little scrubby for me. The color and presentation were both nice, I like the pink. I liked that it rinsed off creamy still, made for easy removal.
The Ginger mask was very nice. I felt like my face was smoother and dryer, which is what I like in a clay type mask. I also didnt mind the scent for this mask, but I almost expected it to dry down. It wasnt a deal breaker that it didnt dry down, just not what Im used to in a clay mask.
Overall, I prefer the ginger one since it seemed to work faster, and I usually need a good clay mask on my T zone.
I tried the dragon fruit mask on Saturday. I was a little worried about the walnut shells being too rough but they did not feel too grainy and didn't irritate my skin at all. I liked the scent at first, but the longer I had the mask on, the less I liked it. I also preferred the feeling of the ginger mask as it sat on my skin - it was more refreshing, maybe? I definitely think I need to apply a thicker layer next time because when it came time to rub in the mask and then rinse it off, it was getting dry in some spots. Even though it was dry it was more powdery than tight-feeling, so it still rinsed off easily.
My face felt very smooth and soft afterwards (presumably from the exfoliation), and it stayed soft all day (I used the mask in the morning). I liked this mask quite a bit, but if I were to purchase one of the masks it would be the ginger one. I prefer the scent of the ginger, plus I don't have much of a need for an exfoliating mask. I usually use chemical exfoliation, but because sometimes I really do like a good scrub 🙂 I do have quite a few scrubby masks to choose from already.
Even though I preferred the ginger mask, I will happily use up the dragon fruit sample as well. They both rinsed off so easily and made my face feel lovely; it was fun to try them out!
@JenniferOhJenny we appreciate you taking the time to test it out for us!
Thanks @SephoraBIC, and @Originsbeauty!!!💖 Both of these masks felt amazing. Tonight, I absolutely loved The fresh, citrusy scent (is it just me or does this smell like fresh oranges?) of the Ginger Kombucha, yet I absolutely adored the fresh feeling of the Dragon Fruit. The best part about these masks is that they rinse clean. My face feels completely awesome. If I could Choose one, tonight my choice would be the invigorating Ginger Kombucha, yet on a different skin day, I may Choose Dragon Fruit. Both are super refreshing.
@ClassicallyFab how smart of you to do halfsies in this experiment!
Haha! Thanks @ShiraBT! Still wishing that Ginger Kombucha will be produced, too! 🤞
@Originsbeauty are you seeing all this ginger kombucha Love???? 😍
@ClassicallyFab looove all the photos! Thanks for your input!
@ClassicallyFab. So glad you got to try the two masks!! Thank for sharing your experience with both!! My question is, if you could purchase only one, would it be the Ginger Kombucha?
Yeah @yankeefaithful. I’m veering toward the Ginger Kombucha. 😄
Ok, I have now used both twice...first impressions are always nice, but I like having more than one use under my belt before really judging anything 😄
Skin type: oily, prone to congestion, perhaps a tad dehydrated
Ginger Kombucha
Oh my, this smells heavenly! I love the scent of ginger, and it's definitely noticeable. It's not overpowering, but this one is not for those sensitive to scents.
As others have mentioned, it's a nice creamy texture, and even though it's clay-based, it doesn't dry down like a clay mask. I left it on for 15 or so minutes the first time and 30ish the second time (lost track of the clock!) and both times, removal was a breeze, with no trace of residue when I followed up with my toner.
I noticed no tingling or cooling (but my skin is also incredibly not-sensitive-at-all in regards to things like that...I don't notice a tingle in many things that other folks do). It left my skin feeling clean and soft, but not dry or tight. For me though, it won't replace my standard clays...this would be my "I'm tired and don't feel like going through the work of the regular one, but I still need to do something" mask; I feel like a standard clay gives a touch more depth of cleaning and oil-clearing results. All in all though, I see no major cons and really like this one a lot, and I would consider purchasing a full size at some point.
Dragon Fruit
Another lovely creamy mask, but I'm less impressed with this one overall. Easy application and removal again, as it stays soft and creamy. It left my face nice and soft afterwards. I didn't notice any appreciable scent to this one, and no tingling or any other sensation along those lines. However, I have 2 cons.
1. The walnut shells almost seem like they've been tumbled and smoothed out...I felt no edges to them at all. This makes me wonder about the effectiveness of the exfoliation this one is supposed to provide, since the pieces just rolled right out from under my fingers. In terms of exfoliation, it's extremely gentle, but almost to the point of pointless, at least for me. I rarely exfoliate manually anymore, but if I do, I want to feel it. I know not everyone does, but it really seems the exfoliation here is almost non-existent, at least in my opinion. (On the flip side though, have you ever tried Ole Henriksen's Pore Sauna Scrub or whatever it's called? I didn't like that either...too scratchy and harsh, so I guess I'm a bit of a Goldilocks here 😛 I like the superfine exfoliant in PTR Pumpkin mask best.)
2. This one left pink residue all over my face; I always tone after a mask, and my cotton round came back pink both times. After the first one I figured I just slipped up and didn't rinse quite well enough, but the second time, I paid very close attention and rinsed way more than normal, but there was still a pink cotton round when all was said and done.
This one would not be on my radar to purchase now that I've tried it. I don't hate it, and I'm happy I got the opportunity to try it, and I will finish off the sample, but I won't be replacing it if this one goes live.
Ginger Kombucha gets my vote (I don't use IG, but I hope my input here still means something) 😄
Thank you so much for the opportunity to sample these; this has been a blast!
I headed over to Insta to vote...anyone can vote lol...it makes the process of us trying and writing thoughtful/meaningful reviews a bit less important. My opinion anyway.
I've tried both and, first of all, thank you Origins and Sephora! It's a tough choice, but I'm declaring myself Team Ginger. The mask was instantly invigorating and once I rinsed it off, my skin felt refreshed and deeply cleansed. I often find detox masks to be on the drying side, but this one left my skin hydrated and super smooth. Pros for the Dragon Fruit mask include soothing sensation, fantastic aroma, and the gently exfoliating beads. The immediate effects didn't seems as pronounced as with the Ginger Kombucha mask, but I do plan to continue to use and see what happens over time.
Thanks again for the opportunity to try them!
@Anonymous we're so happy you enjoyed testing these out!
I tried the Dragon Fruit mask this morning, and like the Ginger Kombucha, this was a great experience as well. The Dragon Fruit smells amazing!!! I applied a thick layer on my face, and during the 10 minutes I just felt a cooling sensation, but no stinging or irritation. I have dry skin with occasional redness and sensitivity, so I was worried this one might be problematic, especially with the walnut shell particles. I used a washcloth to gently remove it, and afterward my skin felt very soft, rejuvenated, and hydrated. I didn’t notice a brightening effect, but perhaps with more uses I would.
My favorite of the two is the Ginger Kombucha, and that is the one getting my vote. Thank you @Originsbeauty, and I am looking forward to seeing if one or both of these masks will be available for purchase soon! ❤️ ❤️
Dragon Fruit Mask
@angel7594 thanks for trying them out and providing such great feedback!
