Does retinol work for Oily Skin?

Ok, I'm half unconvinced/confused on all this hype on retinol. Reason being, I used an oil based retinol to help and control my acne, the Naturally Serious Sleepover Retin-Oil Nighttime Treatment 1 oz/ 30 mL was what I used and at best, my skin was unstable.

I had bouts of breakouts, boughs of slight control but sensitivities, and there really seem to be no major difference. I recently just stopped using this retinol and started using the Tatcha The Silk Serum Wrinkle-Smoothing Retinol Alternative 1 oz / 30 mL and saw close to immediate breakout reduction and calmness. 

So I'm curious, is there any retinols that fellow oily skin people swear by and always buy?? My skin is oily and is scent / chemical sensitive so at this point I'm honestly curious what people think and or have found and use religiously.

@MillaxMion Paula's Choice Clinical 0.3% Retinol + 2% Bakuchiol Treatment 1 oz/ 30 mL this might be a good one to start with, I use Paula's Choice CLINICAL Anti-Aging 1% Retinol Treatment 1 oz/ 30 mL and it's my favorite by far
