Using a specific treatment serum and then a moisturizer both serve different (and important) purposes.  Primer serves yet a differnt purpose...to act as a seal between your moisturizer and your foundation.  It keeps your makup from getting into your pores, which can be clogging...and keeps your foundation from changing color during the day.  So I feel that primer for your skin is important but finding the RIGHT one to be more mattifying will take some trial and error.  Sephora is great about giving you samples to try.  So investigate the different primers available for oilier skin, get samples to take home and try, and see which one works best to give you hydration AND a matte finish without making your feel / lool oily.  Three to test  are:

Perfekt Skin Perfecting Gel, Murad Skin Perfecting Primer Matte Finish and Lorac aquaPRIME Oil-free Make-up Primer.  See how each works under your makeup for a few days and make your decision...or if none are the perfect answer, go back and ask for samples of others.

Hope that helps.

That is true...anything with dimethicone or a silicone type derivitive will prevent dirt or make-up irritants from getting in your pores. And that really does do wonders if you're acne prone. If you do not have a problem with clogged pores or contact dermititis though they can just make your skin feel really heavy.

No...that's just peer pressure.  Unless you have fine lines/acne scarring/large poors using a primer is just a big waste of money.  I do suggest using an antioxidant to prevent your foundation from turning orange.  That happens often with oily skin.  Otherwise...smashbox and most other primers do very little for oily skin and the mattifying aspects of some will only make your skin respond with more oil production.  Very counteractive to your goal I'm sure.

You definitely don't have to use a primer, but if you want your foundation to last all day I would say yes. Oil can oxidize, and breakdown you foundation though out the day. Try Smashbox Photofinish Light. It's a water base primer that is lightweight, and is great foroily skin. Hope this helps!
