Beginner Starting Kit!

Hey lovelies!! So as a beginner, I'm not going to lie, make up shopping is overwhelming!!! As of now, I pretty much just stick to BB cream to even out my skin tone and put on mascara. Help??

Re: Beginner Starting Kit!

Do your research. Don't feel like you need to get absolutely everything there ever is because it's not worth it. Just have fun. Maybe get a pop of color lipstick or a blush to start outside your everyday. I second getting into a subscription service to try some things out.

There's a lot of good advice on this thread! I will add that I think the NARS x Charlotte Gainsbourg collection offers a great, edgy take on minimal makeup. Even without investing in any of the products, it can be a good template for basics to elevate your look: colored liners, matte and glossy lip options, multistick for lips and cheeks, eyeshadow duo, etc.

try Sephora Play! or Ipsy! Great way to try out products and brands to get a sense of what you like without a huge $$ investment. I was a serious newbie a year ago.... by no means a pro but have found some great products and brands that wear well, look natural and don't break the bank!

Re: Beginner Starting Kit!

If you want to start with drugstore brands before knowing what you really like, I definitely recommend the NYX brow powder! Clean brows will frame your eyes and make the entire face look really put together. Even a cheap eyelash curler will really pump up your lashes in addition to your mascara. For lips, a lipstick that's subtle and good for everyday can also double for blush if you're lazy and want to be fast in the morning!

RE: Beginner Starting Kit!

Makeup can be very intimidating, especially for someone who is a beginner and all of the options available can definitely be overwhelming. If you prefer to stick to a natural look and want to try foundation I would suggest Tarte Amazonian Clay. I would use it with a foundation brush or a beauty sponge, make sure to blend.. I would also suggest trying out a primer to apply before hand to help hold makeup in place. I love blush and when first starting out with makeup and up until now I feel like you can never go wrong with bareMinerals blush. They have a decent variety and their blush lasts me forever! You can easily build up the amount that you would like but I suggest to start off very lightly until you figure out what you prefer. If you want to experiment with eyeshadow I would suggest trying the Carli Bybel deluxe palette- it offers great neutrals and some matte & shimmer colors PLUS some awesome highlighters for a great price. I highly recommend this palette. And to top off a look I would say some mascara and lip balm or a lip product of your preference. Have fun, watch some tutorials, look up reviews and don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone😉

I stick to a pretty basic no-makeup makeup look, so my standbys are mascara, lip balm and blush. Light foundations and concealer is very hit or miss so get samples and figure out what works for you. I agree that it might benefit you to buy drugstore dupes of eye shadow until you figure out what shades work for you. Sephora is great about deluxe samples, and if you want to try something go to the store and ask!

RE: Beginner Starting Kit!

Hey I'm just getting started myself! Honestly I've been watching video tutorials for eyeshadow looks and different ways to apply foundation/ concealer if needed and the difference between brushes and the sponge, it's very overwhelming for me but gotta start somewhere and slow. Take your time to practice and you'll get the hang of it.

Re: Beginner Starting Kit!

I'd start with mostly drug store brands or sample kits until you know what colors or formulas(liquid/powder/creme) you like. Try not to focus on too many areas at once-maybe spotlight on your lips or eyes, but not both. Anastasia brow definer is really goof proof if you over-pluck. Glosses and lighter lipsticks are really forgiving. Eyeshadow palettes are fun, but I'd stick to something with less than 5 colors so its not too overwhelming in the mornings. You'll definitely want the following brushes:  powder, blush, eyeshadow blender. A subscription like Sephora Play, Ipsy, or Birch Box is a great way to try a lot of different products for $10/month. Lots of great tutorials on Pinterest.

I second Caitertot. Get a good nude eye shadow palette, like one of the Urban Decay Basics palette. For cheeks and lips, find something sheer and buildable, like a 2 in 1 lip-cheek color or a tinted balm. Don't buy too much too fast, though, or you might find it all sits at the bottom of your drawer. Ease into it.

Re: Beginner Starting Kit!

Hi, beginner here myself... I got the basics. Liquid Foundation (Urban Decay) & Mascara & Eyeliner. I also have a Nake Pallete & the HEAT Pallette *eyeshadow primer is a MUST!! I use Too Faced 24 hour Insurance* and whenever I find time I go on YouTube to try to replicate eyeshadow looks... I hope that helps. Practice makes perfect. Just keep trying. Everyone is different but have fun with it.

Re: Beginner Starting Kit!

I had to teach myself everything about make up and was at a total loss when I first started. My best advice is to start with nude eyeshadows, do a neutral color a shade close to your skin tone and then on the lid do a shade darker and blend with a brush. Eyeliner takes lots and lots of practice, I'd by something cheap and not waterproof and spend lots of time practicing and then try finding and eyeliner you really like. I prefer liquid because it last longer and goes on sharp, pencils are known to smudge better though if you prefer that look. Also do not be afraid of blush! Start with the lightest amount and build up till you get the color pay off you would like. The more you practice the better you get!
