Okay okay, so I know it isn't *technically* fall quite yet (we just had a heat wave in the Bay Area...) but we are just too excited to break out all of the mauves, browns and deep reds for this festive season! Whatever your take on a Fall lip is, we want to see your pics and hear your thoughts.
Here's the challenge: Dig into your lipstick stash and pull out those fall-themed lippies! Post below with your different looks and, of course, let us know what you're wearing. We love to hear application tips and your thoughts on the product.
Can't wait to see what you're wearing.
@ericanicole2005: Great pick! Miss Argentina is exactly the type of dark rose-pink that I adore (and always end up buying, regardless of brand or formula)!
Ole' to Miss Argentina! She is very pretty on you! 🙂
My new Pat McGrath lip liner arrived last week - I wanted a red or bright pink but the two other colours I want to buy are sold out for now though it says coming soon and when it does - I AM BUYING THEM! : ) I ended up getting the colour "night fever" and here I tried it on with the Laura Mercier creme smooth lip colour in "Damask" that came as one of the promo codes/deluxe perks during the 10 days for 10YEARS promotion. I think the colour combo goes well together! I was really happy with the Laura Mercier colour because I thought the colour was really nice in real life and the formula was hydrating. I am in love with the Pat McGrath lip liners - they go on with great precision and have the perfect amount of glide - not too much and not too little. You can blend it and play with it for about 30-45 seconds (my guess) and then it "sets" and once it sets it stays put really well. As you can see in the picture below it is great for overlining the lip - I always overline and I find that some liners are much better for that than others. This Pat M. liner is a dream come true.
I need to know if I have to stock up! @KatieBT With the Pat MacGraph items - is each one a limited edition item or are there some items that may be available longer?
Pat McGrath Laps Ultragel Lip Liner in Night Fever + Laura Mercier Creme Smooth in Damask
@RoseCharlie this is a perfect combo. Thank you so much for the in depth review here and below. I really like the comparisons and the descriptive info. This combo looks great on you!!
@RoseCharlie It does work very well together and looks so pretty on you.
@darkiceisThanks so much lovely! : ) I really like when Sephora has lippies as 100-point perks, nice way to try new things! : )
@RoseCharlie: Great feedback about the Pat Mcgrath lip liners; given the rave reviews about her lipsticks, I would expect nothing less for the liners as well! Are there liners from other brands that come close to the Pat Mcgrath formula?
@MlleCCThank you so much! : ) Woohoo I'm so happy for a question that gives me the chance to expand on this a little bit! Ok, so, I should say that I've been going a little liner crazy over the past year or so because it was a makeup stable I really didn't have many of (before that I just had one liner in red and I used it with everything lol). But I've been trying a lot of different colours and brands and I'm loving a good liner because I find it makes a huge difference on how credibly I can overline my lips to make them look fuller and the performance is so variable. My specific needs are maybe a little different than someone whose lips are not quite as dry because I can't use too many liquid lipsticks - if I did I think liner choice wouldn't be quite as much of a big deal because I find that if you apply liquid lipstick the whole things stays pretty well put but I mostly wear very buttery/hydrating formulas and I always need to apply balm so the grease makes for poor lip liner performance overall and I really need something that stays put with cream lipsticks and a bit of balm. And also I need something that is - a bit thicker if that makes sense? Because when I line just outside the contour of my natural lip (or right on the boundary between my natural lip and skin where there is almost like a pale/clear outline) - if the formulation is a little thicker/has more texture it looks real. I find with thinner formulations like say Kat Von D's everlasting liner (which is very pigmented and glides on nicely but is not gel-like or thick at all) the overlined outline does not have the look of a natural lip line when the formulation is bit thinner like that, you can kind of see that the line is more on my skin than on the lip.
All of that to say that I have tried so many liners over the past 15 months and discovered that what I really like a thicker formulations and I find that gel is the best for that but unfortunately purchasing options for gel lip liners are limited. For some reason I've been told that the Buxom plump line pencils are a part gel formulation but I don't think that's true... In any case I think the "plump" maybe referred to size because I tried them and I really taken with them.
The only 3 gel lip liners I have been able to find so far are the Sephora collection gel liner, the Marc Jacobs poutliner long-wear lip liner and now the Pat Macgraph Ultra Lip Pencil. The Sephora collection gel liner is great for over-lining and comes in the biggest variety of shades (40 colours! and only $15/liner) and if I'm wearing a liquid lipstick or a more dry formulaiton it performs very well but I find that it did not stay as long as I would have liked with my balm and moist lipsticks. The Marc Jacobs poutliner longwear lip liners were my absolute FAVOURITE before this Pat MacGraph liner came along to give it a little friendly competition - of all the liners I have tried I would say that for me I find the Marc Jacobs poutliner effect most closely resembles the Pat MacGraph liner effect - I say "effect" rather than formula because the Pat MacGraph formula is a little different from even the MJ formula though I would say that how the MJ looks/the effect that it gives on the lips is what I have found that most closely resembles the Pat MaGraph. Since these are my top 2 liners but I think the Pat MacGraph might even beat out the MJ because the performance is slightly better I'll do a little comparison of each one here:
- Marc Jacobs Poutliner Longwear Lip Pencil ($30) - the biggest complaint I have about this top 2 favourite of mine is that it is only available in 7 shades (6 if you don't count the invisible non-shade) and only ONE of those 6 shades is not a natural/nude - I like nudes but I love a bold lip and only 1 of the shades works for a bold lip look - a beautiful sort of dark berry called "currant mood". This formula is a little "softer" than the Pat M. lip formula - if you've tried the MJ gel eyeliners, the lip liners go on in a very similar way, very pigmented and very buttery. They don't need to be sharpened there is a dispender to raise the liner in the tube and I find that they come with a generous amount of product. Given how buttery and smooth the formula was I didn't know how well it would stay put but I was VERY impressed with the staying power, even with moist formulations. The liner also has collagen, I feel like this makes a difference, I love a liner or a lip product with collagen (I loved the IT cosmetics vitality lip stain gloss and bought the matching liner because it was the only other liner I had seen - other than the MJ - that boasted collagen in the formulation but the IT cosmetics liner is a much more dry formula - for my purposes I didn't like it as much as a gel. In conclusion the MJ liner is sort of like the ultimate gel formulation - lush, pigmented, buttery, full of collagen and with great performance you wouldn't expect from such a buttery formula. It kind of "sets" a bit after application.
- Pat McGraph Labs Ultra Gel Lip Pencil: ($34/12 shades - great colours/many bolds) This is like the PERFECT match between a gel and a more solid formulation. It LOOKS like a gel and has that nice thick buttery consistency and pigmentation that really lends itself to creating a fuller lip, it goes on like a dream - I usually apply my liner a little crookedly but this makes it easier somehow to apply it in an even manner, it sort of has that perfect amount of glide but no slip, your movements have to be deliberate and this works for me. The formula is a definitely gel but a bit more solid BUT you do have a bit of time to play with it (sorry I know I already said this) - I mean correct, blend it etc. Maybe about 60 seconds but after a few minutes, once it sets, the formula really stays put very well - it still looks like a gel but it doesn't really feel like one anymore. s I find that this one has the best performance for a gel-liner and that it performs MUCH better than most liners I have tried with moist formulations and as an over-liner. This is my new favourite liner in the world with the MJ a close second (but ppl of MJ you need to expand your shade range!).
SOMETHING THAT HELPS ME: I had a wine and cheese thing with some other ladies and a celebrity makeup artist last week and she taught me a tip that has changed the way I apply liner: I sort of lean the tip of my pinky finger to the middle of my chin as I'm drawing the lip line and I try to keep the pinky on the same spot and it helps make the liner symmetrical bc the hand is sort of lining from a central axis point. With the PM liner I wait a couple minutes between liner and lipstick application and then it lasts FOREVER!
@RoseCharlie: Wish I could give more hearts to this post! This is super-helpful information, and I've definitely learned some new things -- I didn't realize that there were so few lip liners that would be suitable for overlining the lips, and it's really interesting to hear about it from the perspective of someone who uses liners specifically for that purpose. The MJ Poutliner has been on my radar for quite some time, but exactly like you said, it's a range of nudes that doesn't quite match my love of bold lip colors. The $30 price tag for such little product is also a deterrent.
I've been on the hunt for my ideal lip liner as well, but I use it for quite a different purpose -- these have been my "lazy day" lip products when I want a super-precise lip application, last-all-day color, the comfort of a regular cream lipstick, but I don't want to go with a liquid lipstick (I don't care for the heavy/thick texture, tackiness and dryness that most formulas come with).
@MlleCCThank you so much! : ) I am so glad bc I was worried I had gotten quite carried away there hahaha. I tried an experiment to see how the Pat M. works as a liner AND lipstick. I'll share the results. Btw - I really do think it really is a great product but have you tried the NARS Velvet Matte lip pencils? I feel like they might do a nice job for the purpose you have in mind because they come in pencil format for precise application and they stay put but they are not quite as dry as a liner! I totally hear ya - liquid lipsticks stay put like nothing else but for me I really can only do them in moderation because they are so so drying on me. The Buxom plump lip pencils are quite thick and big (which I think doesn't show online) and they come with a little blending brush on the other end which would help if you wanted to wear them as lipstick, I think they might be intended for the wearer to have this option. I didn't like them for overlining the lip but I think if you wanted a precise application and a lipliner/lipstick they would work quite well for that. Here are the results of the Pat M. liner as liptick test (I rushed through this application because I am procrastinating from my work ATM) so I did feel I needed to apply a light layer of light lip balm overtop but that might be because my lips are so, so dry. The Pat M. liners come with a really good sharpener which is nice but on the downside i feel like with pencils that have to sharpened you might get a more precise application but you end up loosing a lot of product so it's a tradeoff but at this price point I almost wish it was a push up liner so I didn't loose any. I think the balm helped smoothe the liner application for the parts where it was used as lipstick. I still feel like it works a bit better if you use a light cream fomula as the lipstick part.
Btw - some lip tins that stain the lips but don't have that thick liquid lipstick consistency might be good too because I feel like they're not as heavy and tacky on the lip. They still are a bit drying though but it's like the colour sinks into the lip and after an hour or so if feels like you have nothing on and they last and last. I bought the Dior Lip Tattoo in the colour "natural cherry" ($36) and both in terms of colour and formula I thought it was almost EXACTLY like the Sephora Collection Rouge Lip tint in the colour "Ruby" but the S. collection is only ($15) so I think it's a good way to try a lip tint if you were interested - they have more shade selection as well - the S. collection Rouge Lip Tins come in 8 bright shades! They wouldn't be the best for SUPER precise application unless you used a liner with them but they are great for putting something on and then fogetting about it and that you have it on 1 hour after. Really good transfer resistance and performance too!
Pat McGrath Laps Ultragel Lip Liner in Night Fever as the Liner and Lipstick
This combo works great on you! Very pretty color! 🙂
Fenty's new lipstick is so moisturizing, it feels like a onesie for my chapped lips. Sci-fly. That name just cracks me up once I got it.
Fenty as Sci-fly
Sci Fly sounds and looks like a winner for you! Hooray for moisturizing lipsticks! 🙂
