Beauty Challenge -- Twelve Months of Beauty Inventory

[EDIT-Updated to not limit to a year, legacy posts for all years.]

A few years ago I was inspired by a challenge on Instagram and we did a makeup inventory. ❄️December 2022 Challenge - 12 Days of Makeup Inventory - Show Off and Catalog Your Collection!!❄️

I was a little behind on planning this year (job interviews, life, not being able to login to the BIC), so I thought we could make this a yearly challenge for 2024+ and broaden it across all beauty categories.

Why participate?

  • I know I went back to my posts to find "dupes" for things that were limited edition (Melt Pumpkin King, in my case).
  • It's a good idea to look through your products every bit to review for quality and cleanliness.
  • Curation is important.
  • Knowing how much in your stash can help with your Low/No Buy or keeping an eye on your backups.
  • The fun of organizing your collection!!

Rules

Please no negative comments about the size or contents of others' collections, this is a place to celebrate our collections. Self-reflection is always welcome though 💖. Please don't take this as an impetus to declutter (unless you want to!).

I'm going to try to get a little contemplative with mine, to see if I would purchase again or not. But don't feel obligated to join that part!!

Timeline

  • January - Face Primers, Nail Polish
  • February - Foundations, Concealers, Cleansers and Mists
  • March - Bronzers and Contours (singles), Serums and Treatments
  • April - Blushes (singles), Moisturizer and Oils
  • May - Highlighters (singles), Sheet Masks
  • June - Face Palettes, Non-Sheet Masks, Tools (Brushes, etc.)
  • July - Eye Primers, Single Eyeshadows (free standing or in custom palettes), Body Cleansers, Body Scrubs, Body Lotion, Body Glitter
  • August - Eyeshadow Palettes, Shampoo, Conditioner
  • September - Brow Products, Eyeliners, Mascaras, Hair Treatments
  • October - Lip Balms, Lip Liners, Lip Glosses, Perfume Samples
  • November - Lipsticks, Travel Sized Perfumes
  • December - Setting Powders, Setting Sprays, Full Sized Perfumes and Body Sprays

Re: Beauty Challenge -- Twelve Months of Beauty Inventory

@ather, allergy season was longer for me last year but I didn't have really bad side effects the whole time, but when I did, it was definitely not fun. A lot of watery, itchy, sensitive eyes.

Re: Beauty Challenge -- Twelve Months of Beauty Inventory

@itsfi  awww that’s a bummer!!! Fingers crossed it’s not bad this year!

Re: Beauty Challenge -- Twelve Months of Beauty Inventory

@itsfi I'm just about to finish off my open cleansing balm and I happen to have a mini of the Elemis Black Cherry from UBW as well.  I think you've convinced me it should be the next one I open!

I've also never noticed the La Roche Posay mist before.... And I do love the brand... If I happen to see it in my travels I may pick it up!

You mentioned only using the Rhode Pineapple cleanser once every week or two.  Is there a reason for that?  Is it super enzyme-y?

Re: Beauty Challenge -- Twelve Months of Beauty Inventory

@missjeanie, La Roche-Posay is such a great brand for skincare and body care products. 💙  For years, it seemed like the LRP Serozinc was only available through the brand site directly, at least in the US. Amazon of course has now and recently Dermstore and Ulta carry it online. The Serozinc mist was what made me realize that zinc was helpful in addressing a lot of my acne issues. 💡

The Rhode cleanser itself is mild in application. It's just that one of the ingredients, the pineapple enzyme (go figure!! 😅) happens to be one that my skin can only do in small doses. Weird, I know. Because I love pineapple as a fruit and can eat a lot of it. I don't know if you remember, but Glow Recipe had (or they may still have it in their lineup) a cleansing balm that contains pineapple enzyme ... same thing. Same with the alba botanica and alo cleansers, and I think Josie Maran has one too, though I haven't tried hers. I can use them, it's just better if I don't use them on consecutive days and for me, I just take extra caution to space out when I do use any facial skincare products containing pineapple enzymes. The Rhode though pulls double duty as a hand scrub before I use a hand mask so I can go through it a smidge more quickly.

Re: Beauty Challenge -- Twelve Months of Beauty Inventory

I'll have peek for the mist next time I'm at the drug store.  Not to buy... just to visit.  I think. For now.

Good to know on the Rhode Pineapple.  I've used a few pineapple things here and there (the JM I know for sure I had) and haven't had any reactions that I can think of, but I'll keep that in mind when I go to try out the trial size I snagged.

Re: Beauty Challenge -- Twelve Months of Beauty Inventory

@itsfi  Every time you post anything, I end up adding something to my want-list😅

I've tried and liked the Elemis cleansing balm..... but I haven't tried the black cherry version! - on to my list it goes 😉 Also, the DRMTLGY G(OAT) cleanser sounds wonderful- so that is also getting added to the list 😊

Love that Bioderma! That's probably my most favorite micellar water as well and always snap it it up if I see it at TJMaxx/Marshalls!

Re: Beauty Challenge -- Twelve Months of Beauty Inventory

Hahahaha @Shosh85; the feeling is mutual. There are a few months on this beauty inventory thread where I'm going to have to hide the credit card because I know some you will have things that I'll need want need ... 🤣

Oh, the DRMTLGY G(OAT) is one I think you'd like. The milky/creamy texture makes it a nice one for dry/drier skin. I should have a pic of it somewhere on my phone; hold, please ... ((cue hold music of your choice here  😆))

Yes, yes, the Bioderma is my favorite; well, until that Typology entered my world. We may have a tie, but price wise, Bioderma. Even better that you can get it at TJ Maxx / Marshalls. I saw a handful on clearance at a Target the other day; I wasn't going to pay to check luggage for it to come back with me but it was a steal at that price! I went to check my store and they were not on clearance, or maybe they were and had sold out already? It's on sale online at Ulta now but I'm not sure if the price is better than you can get it for at TJMaxx/Marshalls.

Unless I find one of the other micellar waters I have tops the Bioderma, I'll work my way back to just having that as the only micellar water in my collection. It really saved my skin last spring/summer - there was a period there where my allergies really did a number on my skin and it was not tolerating much of anything other than the Bioderma. I went through an insane amount of bottles of it and cotton rounds. 🙄

Re: Beauty Challenge -- Twelve Months of Beauty Inventory

@itsfi I will need to add that black cherry balm to my list...someday haha. Sounds like a lot of great products!

Re: Beauty Challenge -- Twelve Months of Beauty Inventory

Fully support trying the Elemis black cherry cleansing balm but completely understand the someday @Samtian 😂 After that year I whittled down my once mountainous pile of sheet masks to a single digit, I zoned in on my other skincare products, and, for the most part, they're in a manageable state, at least from my perspective. I get that my definition of a manageable collection could be questionable, hahahaha! Hoping other parts of my beauty collection get there this or next year.

Re: Beauty Challenge -- Twelve Months of Beauty Inventory

I did my foundation and concealer categories last night/this morning.  While this is too many for me, I do appreciate that now I know which ones I'm going to work on in my project pan as I use a few up.  There were quite a few foundation products that were near empty so I should be able to reduce this this stash by at least 5 this year, if not 8.  I'm not letting myself buy foundation this year!  I'd love to end up with a stash that is around 10.  Concealers I'm going to try to aim for that long term as well.  Those goals won't happen this year but it'll be something to work towards.

Re: Beauty Challenge -- Twelve Months of Beauty Inventory

Awesome collection, @missjeanie !! I love also your taking stock of your ideal collection numbers and working towards them. I can get overwhelmed thinking I won't reach that goal quickly (unless I just throw everything out), so I appreciate the reminder that it's something to work toward.

Re: Beauty Challenge -- Twelve Months of Beauty Inventory

@haleyvvvv I have a hard time decluttering so working on using some up and cutting back on purchases is going to be key!

Re: Beauty Challenge -- Twelve Months of Beauty Inventory

This is an amazing collection, @missjeanie! Have fun using them!

Re: Beauty Challenge -- Twelve Months of Beauty Inventory

Thanks @curlychiquita It'll be a fun time this year honing in on what really works for me these days!

Re: Beauty Challenge -- Twelve Months of Beauty Inventory

@missjeanie

Oooh so lovely!

Re: Beauty Challenge -- Twelve Months of Beauty Inventory

@missjeanie  Holy cow! That's impressive!

Re: Beauty Challenge -- Twelve Months of Beauty Inventory

😍😍😍 @missjeanie! This is a beautifully well rounded collection of bases. I like your thinking ahead about your ideal number of foundations and concealers for your collection. I feel like I can get on with just a smidge fewer concealers but the 10 foundations, woah, that's impressive. On the one hand, I'm thinking oh, that's a nice, solid, round number and you can get some great variety of coverage and finishes with that. Then I think, wait, 10? Is / will that be enough? 🤣 Those are some really good foundations in your collection; I don't really envy you having to pare that group down to 10.

Re: Beauty Challenge -- Twelve Months of Beauty Inventory

@itsfi I really think I only need one fuller coverage and then the rest can be a combination of different medium and light coverage products.  I'm thinking if I could keep it to 10 I may be able to use them before the SPF is shot?

Concealers are one of my favourite things to test out the last few years so I'm hoping... but not super realistic.  At least my store having a limited selection means that I can't test shades and so I'm more likely to hold off on purchases? Maybe?

Re: Beauty Challenge -- Twelve Months of Beauty Inventory

Yeah, I hear ya @missjeanie. I have a couple of foundations that hold themselves out as "medium" that I woud argue are actually full coverage, not medium-to-full, but full-full. I have more full coverage concealers than I do foundations.

Re: Beauty Challenge -- Twelve Months of Beauty Inventory

Back quicker than anticipated!  I saw how quickly I could do mists and figured I'd post right away.

Not in photos but still in my life...

-Dr Jart Cicapair Mist- I really enjoy the mister on this one and keep it at my desk in office.

- Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Ultra-Fine Mist 2.53 oz/ 75 mL  This is also at my desk in office.  I really enjoy the mister and the way the fragrance gives a nice mood boost.

- Tower 28 Beauty SOS Daily Hypochlorous Acid Spray for Breakouts & Redness 4 oz/ 120 mL This one lives in my bedside table.  I only realized I was missing one after the photo was take.

- Byoma mist.  This one lives in my truck.  It's snowing out.  I was not willing to go get it. I actually like this one and while I don't use it much these days, it must be close to empty because I really enjoyed having it in there on a hot summer day.

In use

Spoiler
The Rhode and Ole Henriksen are both newer to me over the last few months.  I quite like each and mostly use these two as a serum step in my routine.  That said, on no make up, work from home days both have been used as mists.
Peach and Lily is one that I do quite like.  I've used it off an on for 3 or 4 bottles at least.
Tower 28... This is a mini I keep refilling to have available in my travel bag.

Unopened

Spoiler
-The volition I believe I bought because it's called Screen Time and I tend to use a mist most often while I'm at work looking at a screen.
-Mac should probably be used up.  These are ... not new.
-The three others (P&L, Gucci, and T28) are all re purchases of products I've bought in the past and enjoyed.

Re: Beauty Challenge -- Twelve Months of Beauty Inventory

Fabulous collection, @missjeanie !! I loved the GR mist, nice to see it be a fave in someone else's collection. I used the Volition mist (or an earlier version) and liked it fine, but I'm not sure what it does for blue light (which at the time was what it was marketed for). I need to try the Rhode most soon
